- Blinker1315, on 07/04/2009, -3/+16Manny's a self-involved creep who only cares about his $$$ and not his team. I was surprised when he was exposed as a 'roider, but like A-Rod, he gave the flimsiest of excuses. It's mind-boggling he got so many votes for the All Star game (not that he'd go, as in past years), even after the suspension.
- ethanator1088, on 07/04/2009, -4/+12Booooo!
This gets on my nerves. I can't believe he was not booed off the field. - fun12, on 07/04/2009, -4/+11Some one else to talk abou other than the gloved one who dominated the news this weekt--he did the crime and least he's very much alive unlike MJ. But Manny is forgiven and he learned his lesson and I give him the benefit of the doubt.
- Certain, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6I'd have to disagree with the TO part. Have you heard the stories? EVERYONE. Even the ESPN guys that hate him speaks highly of his work ethic. It's almost reached Michael Irvin legendary workout status. You don't work that hard if you aren't trying to be the best. Now he more than likely won't surpass Jerry Rice...and he may not be able to keep his mouth closed. But I can't say he lacks passion or isn't concerned with being the best.
- JanSimpson, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6Manny plays to the crowds and I think he much like TO - lots of talent but no passion or concern with being the best - a waste of good talent...someone must have done something to the both of them to turn them into angry ppl - too bad - he is one of my favs though - Get with it Manny
- Worldchrisis, on 07/05/2009, -1/+575% of fans don't care about steroids.
- iMLoStx, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4It was in Socal.... there were just as many if not more dodger fans than padre fans.
Go Dodgers! =] - smokeydbear, on 07/05/2009, -1/+4you could have just said, "Manny's a baseball player in the modern era" and saved yourself a lot of typing.
- rrc589, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2If you take steroids to enhance your performance in any professional sport, you're cheating a lot of the clean players out of money and/or roster spots. It's completely unfair.
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/05/2009, -4/+6I'm not going to get mad at him for using steroids. It makes the game more exciting! Just stop griping about it and get on with the game!
- RiotHeart, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Did he do the crime? Seeing how he failed his drug test... Yes, yes he did
- siyengar, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Ramirez is a pussy. Not because he did Hcg, but because he gave a pussy excuse. His excuse is a reflection of his character. Besides money, all he cares about is his fame and popularity.
Too bad there is no other Jose Conseco to rat some of these douchebags out. - flamesrule, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3If Manny and A-Rod get a pass and people still talk about them getting into the HOF, then so does McGwire, Clemens, Bonds, Sosa and the rest. You can't take one or two and keep the rest out, either all of them get in or none of them do.
- RiotHeart, on 07/05/2009, -2/+4I'm sure boxers on PCP would make boxing a lot more interesting. Does that mean it would be right?
- mhf03, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Still a steroid user. He cheated his way into a 50 million dollar deal. Losing $7 million is nothing. If anything he can view it as a business expense that enabled him to get the contract he otherwise might have not gotten.
- Ajajadude, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2You Dodger fans are an interesting breed...and your sportswriters are either geniuses or complete morons.
I was reading an opinion piece in some random SoCal sports page about Manny and his testing positive. The article writer seems to think Manny cares that he could have potentially boned over his team by being stupid. She seemed to think he's been guilt-ridden all these weeks for screwing up the way he did. Apparently, she's new to this planet because Manny being Manny is basically What Can Manny Do for Himself. - mhf03, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Because of steroid users the entire baseball community suffers. It seems people are beginning to believe all baseball players use steroids which isn't fair for those who are actually clean and care about the integrity of the game.
- phrstbrn, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2This. Using steroids is against league rules for good reason.
They're dangerous (can cause serious cardiac problems) and have serous side effects (impotence and impaired sexual function). Most of which is permanent.
If the league allowed steroid use, athletes would need to use them to remain competitive. You'd see former star-players get benched for not taking steroids to keep up. - Ajajadude, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Well, as TO as you can get in baseball.
I love Manny and I love the fact that he helped the BoSox win couple of WS rings, but, he's a lazy knucklehead who is more concerned with his ego than he is anything else. While his goofiness and boneheadedness can be overshadowed by what he can do with a bat, it just gets to be too much at times. His lack of trying at times can be maddening!
I've seen the idiot botch the most routine plays in the outfield and a few innings later, make the most spectacular plays you'll see in weeks. It's as if he just doesn't care at times and it makes no sense! - YodaOfDarkness, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Look it up: Manny was suspended for having a prescription. There was no evidence of the drug in his system at any time.
They found an abnormal level of testosterone, yes, but no drugs that would have caused that. They then requested his medical records, which he handed over, and they found that he had a prescription for HCG, and that was enough to warrant a suspension under MLB's policy.
Why didn't he argue it? Because that would have delayed his suspension possibly until the second half of the season, and would've taken him out of the post-season. Even though he could argue it wasn't in his system, it was the same as when the police can arrest you for possession of illegal drugs even if you're not using them. - inactive, on 07/05/2009, -3/+4Because it ruins the playing field, if one does it, they all have to, just to keep up. It's like overclocking your body.
- YodaOfDarkness, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1He didn't fail a drug test, he had a high level of testosterone. He was suspended for a prescription that he had, which they found while looking in his medical records for the cause of his high testosterone levels.
Were there any banned substances in his system? Seeing how they didn't find any... No, no they didn't. - hankthedwarf, on 07/05/2009, -1/+2I'm a die-hard Dodger fan for over 20 years and I agree 100% with Plaschke's stance. I like Bill a lot because he stands by his convictions and doesn't back down or play nice with players in order to get closer to them. Writing this about Manny in LA unfortunately won't make him more popular (we have a lot of idiot Dodger fans here), but journalism isn't about popularity. It shouldn't be anyway.
- orbish, on 07/05/2009, -2/+3me
- orbish, on 07/05/2009, -1/+2DH, the lowering of the pitcher's mound, the strike zone becoming smaller.... all eras of the game... this one will be based on taking drugs. i would be ok with it if everyone took them, and it was an even playing field, as was such with previous eras.... but some players care about the integrity of the game... and i stand with them. ***** everyone that is nonchalant about this issue
- Claudia21184, on 07/05/2009, -1/+2I'm a Dodgers fan and yes I want steroids out the game. But as a Dodgers fan I was a little peeved that Manny is the only player to be suspended due to steroids. Many players failed the drug test. When McGuire and Sosa were dueling for the HR season title, steroids were swept under the rug to help the league, ARod wasn't suspened when he failed the drug test. Yes Manny was on steroids, but to me, he is the only one that served his time 50 games, plus he lost $7 million, he's paid his dues and he's the only one who has.
- Blinker1315, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1I get your point, but that's not fair to the ballplayers who follow the rules, and, more importantly, are very generous. A lot of Dominican players, for example, donate money and time in their hometowns, often building schools and ballfields. Boston's Tim Wakefield, a good pitcher, is very involved in charity works in that city.
- elchispito, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Congress does, for some inexplicable reason.
- abeewon, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0the true test will be if he continues to play as well as he was before the suspension
- YodaOfDarkness, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1I've read Plaschke's articles for about five years now, and in the last two years, he's become a real holier-than-thou ass. He expects everyone to be outraged at absolutely everything _he_ doesn't like, and he REALLY doesn't like Manny. Never has, never will.
Oh, and I was at Petco last night and today, and the Plaschke-esque people were dead silent after Manny hit his home run. Guess you can't argue with that. - abeewon, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0he accepted it with dignity not a bunch of blame throwing which is admirable these days
- randyzaia, on 07/05/2009, -5/+5Honestly who gives a ***** if a baseball player takes steroids.
- bigmacur, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1homerun by manny today...GO DOYERS!!!
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -1/+0It only ruins the playing field if the groundskeeper goes into a roid rage,
- Sergiobaby, on 07/05/2009, -1/+0Yes, I agree!
- BigVi, on 07/05/2009, -7/+5Who cares about baseball anymore? Its obviously belongs in the same breath as boxing and the WWE
