- LowHz, on 05/07/2009, -7/+71And yet Pete Rose is still banned for life.
- merdiesel, on 05/07/2009, -8/+68Oh please. Don't tell me you believe that ***** spin story. He denied his request to appeal the ruling.. what does that tell you. The guy was caught and accepted the ruling.
Manny* is a cheater. - benderillo, on 05/07/2009, -10/+67*
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -1/+55How come control pitchers and all glove no hit guys never get screwed over by bumbling doctors? It's only the sluggers and pitchers with biceps the size of small cars...
- praderwilli, on 05/07/2009, -8/+62Yep, he just ruined his whole career. Not that he isn't a great ball player, but once your branded with the steroid stigma you'll never shake it. Just ask McGwire.
- drewpost, on 05/07/2009, -6/+57"Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons."
- harryterry, on 05/07/2009, -37/+83this story is still unconfirmed, but if it is true, both the Dodgers and baseball will take a huge hit...
edit: Manny went to his doctor and received a prescription drug from his doctor which could be the reason for the positive test
he did not test positive for steroids - SpookyBoots, on 05/07/2009, -7/+44I appreciated the sarcasm.
- mattgy, on 05/07/2009, -1/+37Prepare to hear about nothing else on ESPN until someone else tests positive.
- Treshnell, on 05/07/2009, -1/+36Oh I don't know, Favre is getting close to flipping his retirement coin again. Best out of 10!
- Ajajadude, on 05/07/2009, -1/+35Don't they all say it's a result of too much of some vitamin or medication?
- feelfree86, on 05/07/2009, -15/+43kinda suspicious that manny tested positive now that he is not a red sox player. Also suspicious that no red sox player was named in the mitchel report. leads me to believe that the red sox may have someone on the inside...
There is also a certain player on that team that miraculously went from a <20 HR hitter to a 50 HR hitter over the course of 1 season. It is also very suspicious how this certain player got so huge after joining the red sox...

- djcgmcse, on 05/07/2009, -20/+44I'm a big Red Sox fan, so glad they traded him. If there was to be anyone on that World Series team who was drugging, I knew it was going to be him.
- nalguita, on 05/07/2009, -2/+23I love weed
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/07/2009, -2/+21Pete Rose is banned because of Pete Rose.
Pete Rose *himself* signed an agreement to be banned from baseball after the commissioner at the time Bart Giamatti, showed him what they had on him. They gave him a choice, either agree to be banned or we're going to come out and let the world know just what we have on you.
So he himself signed an agreement to be banned from baseball and was told they'd consider reinstating him if he didn't talk about it and just kept a low profile. Sure enough, he immediately goes on a talk show tour, telling everybody how he was railroaded and how he did nothing wrong. So, he pissed baseball off and called the commissioner a liar and a lot of people believed him. The commissioner was pissed and decided to show him who's boss.
Now I've heard recent interviews with him and I agree, at this point he should be considered for the hall. I'm not sure what Bud Selig's beef is with him. At this point it's a little ridiculous. The guy has finally admitted to what he did. It would be a damned shame for him to die before getting in.
Ultimately, however, if you're trying to throw the game (never proven he did that, but he did bet on his own team), then you no longer have a baseball game. You're watching wrestling at that point. I think that's worse than steroids, in my opinion. - robEstyles, on 05/07/2009, -1/+19Not as much as Jose Canseco
- tmeaster, on 05/07/2009, -4/+20"Manny being Manny" taken to a whole new level.
Even if it isn't Steroids that he was taking this is just inexcuseable. There is a enough money on the line for these guys to take a little bit more precaution and know every little thing that goes into their body.
This is a big hit for baseball if it is true (as if they haven't had enough big hits already). - kirk89, on 05/07/2009, -7/+22A lot of comments before the actual results come out. Reports stated that he got medication for some personal matter, maybe an STD?! But come on lay off his back till the whole story comes out. IT wasn't HGH or steriods.
- marm0lade, on 05/07/2009, -5/+20Fellfree86, you should not be getting dugg down for raising good points.
It is no coincidence that the Mitchell report has no red sox on it. He is the Director of the Boston Red Sox. It's on their ***** website, all your biased ***** who are digging feelfree down. Here is the link:
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/team/front_office.jsp ...
Yes, it is TOTALLY a coincidence that Mitchell is the Director of baseball operations for the Red Sox and NO Red Sox appeared on his report. Coincidence. Totally.
How stupid can you be? - MrBabyManSTFU, on 05/07/2009, -1/+16It enhances my consumption of $9 nachos!
- SDM187, on 05/07/2009, -2/+17Actually they're most likely saying something akin to: "HA HA HA HA HA H AHAHAHAHAHAHA HA HAHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-03289408934!!!! hahahalsdjflajsf LOLOLOL"
- tornadojoe, on 05/07/2009, -3/+18True, but I really don't think Griffey did any. He's always had a similar build throughout his career, and after he got to Cincinnati was always injured somehow and was slow to recover. Some HGH could've done his career some good.
- blackbelt88, on 05/07/2009, -2/+17I'm sure Barry Bonds is just loving this.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -2/+15Well according to him it wasn't HGH or steroids. But when does a player ever come out and say "Yeah there's this trainer around town, everyone says his stuff is good, I paid him a few grand to inject me with the latest blend of roids"... yeah right, they always blame it on taking the wrong meds, totally innocent mistake.
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/07/2009, -7/+18And you know he took steroids...how exactly?
Look, I'm a Yankee fan, so I should be the last guy defending him. But considering he never tested positive before (assuming he wasn't part of that "anonymous" 103 names, it just seems odd that he's testing positive now. Maybe his story is true and his doctor slipped up and gave him medication that was banned. Sure, maybe he's been taking drugs all along and made a mistake on his procedures to mask this fact and got caught. Or maybe his story is legit and his doctor screwed up and gave him a banned substance. Who knows. But you're a little quick to put the "steroid" tag on him when you have no idea what he was banned for. - ccjrod, on 05/07/2009, -1/+11Best hitters who are still clean from the steroid area? My vote: Frank Thomas and Griffey Jr.
- ShingoEX, on 05/07/2009, -16/+26Just kick him out...period, like any other "regular" job would do.
These players have worked too hard and overcome too many barriers just to be slapped on the wrist like this. Fire the ***** and set the standard for zero-tolerance. Otherwise, they'll keep doing this *****. - blackinthmiddle, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11But you wouldn't have won your championships without him and Big Papi terrorizing pitchers in the middle of that lineup.
- vtbarrera, on 05/07/2009, -4/+13And Mannywood no longer exists. :(
- DLun203, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8All players are urged to check with the league before taking any prescribed medication for this reason.
If a player were given prednisone for poison ivy, it'll show up on a test as performance enhancing. These guys aren't pharmacists, they're baseball players. They shouldn't be taking anything without the league knowing, especially when this is such a high profile job and they are getting paid so much. - blackinthmiddle, on 05/07/2009, -5/+13The only fly in that ointment is that Manny doesn't have biceps the size of small cars. He's listed at 6'0" and 200 lbs. That's quite pedestrian.
Listen, if he did 'roids, he did 'roids. The only thing is, we don't know what he took exactly. Could be 'roids. We know it's probably not growth hormone because there's no test for that and they said he tested positive.
Who knows. Maybe he was always taking it and slipped up on the tricks he uses to make sure he doesn't test positive. Or maybe he's telling the truth took a banned substance that he didn't know was banned and is not necessarily a muscle builder. - FreddieD, on 05/07/2009, -1/+9I know this is naive of me but if I ever find out Pujols was on steroids I would be far more crushed than I would be hearing this about Manny, A-Rod, etc. Pujols appears to play the game the absolute way it should be.. he eats right, works out right, he's the first guy into the film room and the last guy out. Combine A+ talent with A+ preparation and you have the best hitter since Ted Williams.
- netant, on 05/07/2009, -0/+81) I doubt the majority of baseball players can identify EVERY drug on the banned list, particularly Manny.
2) If the drug is on the list, the drug is on the list. An appeal is not going to be able prevent a suspension. And 50 games is A LOT of games. The only thing an appeal would accomplish is delay the suspension. Rightly or wrongly, players consider games played late in the season more important than games played in the spring. Perhaps Ramirez is suffering from sort of malady that required a banned substance for treatment. Might as well sit it out now, physically recover while taking the banned drug, and be clean and physically recovered by the time the suspension is over. - nudedos, on 05/07/2009, -7/+15Manny Being Manny, Tuesday Nights on NBC
"Manny gets caught using steroids and burns the meatloaf." - Tubal22, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7oh rly?
Why wouldn't he appeal and get the facts out?
You expected Manny to be honorable? I'm just surprised he didn't get busted sooner.
If what he says is true, he may want to sue that doctor for about $8 million that he's going to lose for those 50 games. - evan193, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7well then you have a point. though to stay on my side of the argument, im going to say that he was just trying to get pregnant.
- phillymatt, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7He won't, and if you bothered to read the article you'd know that.
"The suspension will cost the Dodgers left fielder $7.7 million, or roughly 31% of his $25-million salary. Players in violation of baseball's drug policy are not paid during suspensions." - vatd112, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7No he won't. baseball contracts have restrictions
- evan193, on 05/07/2009, -2/+9how can you classify something as cheating when you have absolutely no idea what the drug was? neither this article nor any article ive seen yet has confirmed it as performance enhancing.
- boat, on 05/07/2009, -1/+8MLB doesnt care if you smoke weed
- awtripp, on 05/07/2009, -4/+11Gambling/point shaving/throwing games (by players/managers) hurt the game more than steroids. I'm not saying both aren't horrible things to happen to sports, just ranking one slightly below the other.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sox_scandal - jimmyb3, on 05/07/2009, -3/+10Let's find out what medication he is talking about before we rush to judgment. If, in the unlikely event it turns out to be something banned but not performance-enhancing, then that is an entirely different situation. Again, I realize this is unlikely, but let's not rush out to hang the guy just yet. I don't personally care for him or his 'tude, but fair is fair.
- conebone69, on 05/07/2009, -5/+11he denied to appeal because he and his agent thought it would be better to serve 50 games rather than go through a grueling appeal process which COULD keep him sitting out the entire year.
yes, he is guilty. but it wasn't steroids. the MLB drug testing is ridiculously tough. from my understanding, they have even banned some prescribed medications for asthma. - icebane, on 05/07/2009, -1/+7I hate when respectful, honorable, professional athlete role models make mistakes and get punished so severely for them.
