- JoeHammer, on 08/27/2008, -8/+32Because after every game, we all have that sinking feeling of "I wish that would have lasted longer."
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -2/+23That's what your girlfriend says, too.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+13Congratulations to the MLB for finally getting to the technological standards of 1980.
- DanDotOrg, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12Finally...
- bigtimslim, on 08/27/2008, -0/+8Yes! One step closer to android umpires
- cbergstrom, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6Everyone is always hating on Bonds for good reason. But in this case, that wasn't Bonds, that was Roberto Alomar. His defense was that the ump gave him a racial slur. Alomar also apparently made fun of the ump's disabled son. They obviously didn't like each other, but we'll never know the true story.
Either way, Alomar, not Bonds. :P - Iatethecrayon, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Seems a bit unfair to start it now, right as the season is ending. What if there was a case earlier this season when a team lost because of a homerun called wrong, and now after this technology is implemented, another team benefits from it and wins a game. It just seems like they should have waited or started this at the beginning of this season or something.
- tnerd, on 08/26/2008, -2/+7Sweet! Never go wrong again!
- Tito151, on 08/27/2008, -1/+5As if a baseball game didn't take long enough as it is. This is where it starts ... Get ready for Coaches' Challenges to follow soon...
- krschuerman, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4How did sports become so important that they couldn't accept human error?
- MtheoryX, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4You totally blew the most relevant situation for a "that's what she said" ever.
Very disappointing. - Tito151, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I dunno, but I thought it was funnier in Wayne's World.
- Tito151, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Yea, because a Football Ref (or the Chain Gang) would never make a bad call ...
- KennMac, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2This comment ranks pretty low on my care-o-meter.
- HailAqualung, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Umpires are a part of the game. We train equally as hard to be perfect as any player would.
Granted, I do not umpire MLB, but that doesn't mean I take it any less serious.
It is all about positioning; once you learn where to be in any given situation, you just need to learn your angles and then you have your call.
And let's see an Android Umpire sell its calls... - bearcat8543, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2because 97% of the time the umps are correct. its only during a close home run call where it can get sticky, ya know, due to the fact that its 400 ft away. youd be suprised how easy it is, and how good those guys are at calling balls and strikes.
- da_bradler, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3sorry I meant euro football, or rather soccer. in soccer there is a advantage rule, so if no advantage is gained then no call is made so it's not really possible to do it with computers.
with baseball it is either a strike or it isn't. it's either a catch or it isn't, the runner is either safe or he isn't, it's a fair ball or it isn't. there is no middle ground, no advantage, it is either something happened or something didn't happen. so why not use a method that is of a higher precision?
I can see still having a head ump to keep things under control but all the other refs are fairly expendable. - RizzoFrank, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Google android replays.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2This really isn't going to change the game much. Disputable HRs? Most teams don't have one all season. But still a nice feature. I think they could only go far as to extend this reviewing to home plate calls as well without going overboard and keeping the game "the same".
- virtualonliner, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3About time. Only for HR for now though.
- reelskamachine, on 08/27/2008, -5/+7people still watch baseball?
- nomad255, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2i hope this fails... baseball is fine the way it is
- bsmang, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Wow, no clue how I mixed that up.. I remember seeing it happen. I could have sworn it was Bonds. I guess it's been a long time and my memory ain't what it used to be. And I guess if racial slurs were involved then maybe.. Who knows.
- hellboy864, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2this is the start, from here it snowballs.
- cambob76, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Well, it might cut down on some of those coach hissy-fits. Although sometimes entertaining, they're pretty much disrespectful and a waste of time.
- cambob76, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Just need a sensor in the ball... a consistent strike zone sounds good to me.
- cdbeshore, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1why they would start this in mid-season is beyond me. The way they screw stuff up, they are just asking for trouble. Remember all the screw-ups with NFL replay? They tested and tested and used it in preseason first. So MLB apparently thinks it will go smoothly. yeah, right... just like ignoring steroids.
- greenblob, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Anyone else read that as "Action Replay"?
- H3BR3W, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Actually, instant replays for foul/fair home run calls will cut down on the length of games. The crew can just go straight to the replay instead of having those longass debates over what was seen by whom. Now whether they keep it in the outfield or not remains to be seen. Let's hope they do.
- kmb1794, on 08/27/2008, -2/+3and then baseball games are even longer
- bsmang, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2Ever since i saw Bonds spit right in an ump's face and not get ejected for life, it's been over for me. (Er. as far as MLB goes!)
- Remelox, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1I can't wait to see the coaches trying to run all the way to New York City to yell in the crew chief's face.
- BeevoNerd, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Yeah, no idea why they waited so long. I love baseball, and I'll miss the arguments, but it's about damn time.
- dxpsteve, on 08/27/2008, -2/+3Unfortunately, yes.
- bigtimslim, on 08/27/2008, -2/+2almost. Don't watch the office?
- Schmich, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1I wish I could say that for football too. I don't get why they don't have it...
- MrFurious2k, on 08/27/2008, -2/+2But... computers are so cold and impersonal and there will be no room for personal interpretation. I for one will be very upset to see that umpires will no longer be able to interject their personal opinion into a game play. What are they trying to do - make the game harder for bookies?
- memper, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0Sometimes life isn't fair. What makes baseball great is sometimes the calls aren't fair. It's real, it's human, it's about responding to the moment using player statistics to make judgments in the face of unstable human behavior on the field. If we're into baseball to merely track statistics on player performance in a perfect vacuum, we might as well virtualize the entire game.
- kkinack, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0I still think they should also make plays at the plate reviewable. Sure, a homerun can change the outcome of a game. But I've seen some really bad plate calls in 1 run game situations.
- castletech, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1I know this doesn't matter and is off topic but baseball is boring.
- Jesse, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Watch this, now he won't want baseball for some other reason. I think he wants a soapbox to stand on or something.
- bpeacock22, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Only for HRs? Are there that many disputes about whether a ball goes over the wall into the stands?
- da_bradler, on 08/27/2008, -3/+2baseball is one of the few sports where the refs could and most likely should be completely replaced with cameras and computers. baseball is not like football, it either is or it isn't there is virtually no room for personal digression and frankly no need.
- dantelephoneman, on 08/27/2008, -5/+3How do you make a long, boring game even longer? ACK! never mind that is how. I am getting Sleepy just thinking about it.
- uselessexpert, on 08/27/2008, -6/+3GREAT!!! I've been saying this since I was a teenager playing little league.
It's about time and a welcome addition to the game I love. - booksnmore4you, on 08/27/2008, -4/+1Great decision, but it is utterly pathetic it too this long.
- Crazymaniacc, on 08/27/2008, -6/+21980 called, they want their idea back.
