Lowest seed ever to win a NCAA tournament title
collegebaseball.rivals.com — Fresno State arrived at the College World Series as the ultimate underdog. A No. 4 regional seed had never reached Omaha, let alone won the national title. The Bulldogs did both, and are now considered the lowest seeded team to ever win an NCAA tournament title

- virginian9000, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9My Carolina Tarheels choked in the CWS again.
- awtodd, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Its ok, the Tarheels are pretty good at that
- sleeknerve, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1the cubs are better
- PhrosTT, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1what's that, like 3 years in a row now? i didn't even watch cuz i assumed they would make the final again.
anyway we can always find solace in our whole bball team coming back. - Managua8Green, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Choked? They lost in everywhere possible to the bulldogs....
- awtodd, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Its ok, the Tarheels are pretty good at that
- sleeknerve, on 06/26/2008, -0/+18This is amazing, this is like a #14 seed in the NCAA basketball tournament to win the title. These guys are great and really deserve it
- jerrycurley, on 06/26/2008, -1/+0No it isn't. There is a much bigger gap between #4 and #1 seeds in baseball than #14 and #1 on basketball.
Villanova winning as the 8 seed in the basketball was more of an upset.- sleeknerve, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3I just tried to give an accurate comparison of how to compare the seeding. I never said that it was a bigger upset than that.
now go ***** yourself - bnrchiefs, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2In baseball, #4 is the lowest seed among 64 other teams. This makes them approximately 13-16 in basketball. Also their RPI rating was 89 where as Georgia's was 8.

- VonCali, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2I'm a student there as well - It's great to see the baseball team do something great while our football team chokes season after season

- bowlesman11, on 06/26/2008, -1/+13I give it ten years before they make a movie out of this.
- hawksfan03, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2I agree, the RF's right thumb was completely separated from the bone. He has to have Tommy John Surgery on his thumb, if you saw him swing and miss the pain he was in was immense. I guess that's probably why after his first swing and miss he went 4-4 with 2 HR, a 2B and 6 RBIs. An absolutely amazing story.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Tommy John surgery on his thumb? By definition Tommy John surgery can only be done on one's elbow.
- hawksfan03, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1That's how they describe it, basically it is Tommy John surgery for the thumb. They have to take a ligament from his arm and replace the one in his thumb.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Tommy John surgery on his thumb? By definition Tommy John surgery can only be done on one's elbow.

- Managua8Green, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3oh, you're from the no?
- SaiaRiddle, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1That I am. The air is currently in the RED zone which means you could get asthma just from walking outside. Sound familiar?
- Managua8Green, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1yeah, of course. Its all those fires man! but at least its not TOO hot yet (I can handle 98)

- Managua8Green, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9Yeah, 559! Its great to see Fresno on ESPN and hell, even Digg.com Go Bulldogs!
- danr2c2, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1HA HA, I was just waiting for the obligatory 'Fresno hitting the map' blurb.
It's true though. I am happy to see the Bulldogs and Fresno hitting the interweb for things other than highest rate of teenage pregnancy.

- chrissku, on 06/26/2008, -3/+2It's good to see the baseball team win the title that the football team will not win. Ever.
- sleeknerve, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3well, only because of the BCS system, this just proves anything can happen with a playoff
- chrissku, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1I could not agree more. I should have elaborated on what I was saying..........

- jetblackz4, on 06/26/2008, -1/+10This is what baseball is all about. Congrats Fres deserve it !!!
- saunders45, on 06/26/2008, -1/+11I flew up there last week for a wedding and heard this funny story while catching a game, and it sounds like it may be true.
"Fresno State's logos have been confused for that of Florida State, a CWS team that also sports an FSU symbol on its caps. And the Bulldogs mascot is shared with that of Georgia, another CWS team.
Word around the stadium is that one woman bought a $75 Bulldogs jersey and had the entire Georgia team sign it, only to find out later that it was a Fresno State jersey. (The University of Georgia mascot is also the bulldog.)"
http://www.fresnobee.com/336/story/677783.html - Cyrus042, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9A lot of great players that game. Justin Wilson pitched 8 innings with only giving up one run. (Gordon Beckham) Detwiler played an amazing offensive game and it was fitting for him to make the winning out. Mendoca played a great game as well and deserved his recognition in the CWS. Most importantly though, they all played as a team and they did it with a great attitude.
Needless to say, Fresno is ecstatic about it. We're really proud of our team :) - diggerphelps, on 06/26/2008, -5/+3Lowest seed to win a baseball title or any NCAA title?
(DNRTFA)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villanova_Wildcats_me ...- scheibs14, on 06/26/2008, -2/+1Yeah the title is a bit misleading by not specifying baseball in it
- AManOfLOP33, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7Any title. Their RPI was 89th going into the CWS
- jerrycurley, on 06/26/2008, -0/+0RPI is not a seed.
- sleeknerve, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4you misunderstood, a 4 seed in baseball is like a 14 seed in basketball, not an 8.
- jerrycurley, on 06/26/2008, -1/+0It is impossible to definitively compare seed numbers between the two. And really impossible to compare a losers bracket tournament with one that has no losers bracket. After all, Fresno State lost 15-1 in their own bracket once. But because the team they lost to came out of the losers bracket, they had to beat them again. So when Fresno St. won 5-1, they won. Despite being outscored 16-6 in the two games. They then lost the first game in a best of 3, again, badly
- decker12, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3Any title for any men's sport. That includes baseball, football, air hockey, soccer, basketball. Everything. They were the lowest ranked, lowest seeded, most underdog of all underdogs in any NCAA men's sporting team, ever. And now they're national champions. This is an amazing accomplishment.
- jerrycurley, on 06/26/2008, -0/+0subjective.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3Hehe, diggerphelps. Anyway, I think this article is correct, but I find it funny that on ESPN they never actually said what their ranking is so I wonder if they had an official ranking or if they are just "unranked."
- Managua8Green, on 06/26/2008, -0/+189
- bnrchiefs, on 06/27/2008, -0/+189 isn't an official rank but I'd say it was correct. It is just what a computer ranked them among every other team based on stats.
- Managua8Green, on 06/26/2008, -0/+189
- web2pointYo, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Well done gentleman.

- TruEKuma, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Lets go dogs!
- pumkinpye, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Yea Dogs
- hawksfan03, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1The #4 regional seed is a bit misleading. The tournament starts out with 16 - 4 team brackets and they are not reseeded at all. Fresno State was not even a bubble team this year, they had no chance of making the tournament unless they won their conference tournament.
Although their actual seed is not the lowest ever (Villanova, 13, 1985 Mens BBall) 4 is the lowest seed you can get, basically a 13-16 seed in the NCAA Basketball Tournament - AManOfLOP33, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Go WAC w000!
Love,
Your Northern Nevada Rivals. - bknoll22, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3This was a great year for the CWS. A lot of great defensive and offensive plays and a Cinderella story to top it all off
- gregerly, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3Hell yeah, the atmosphere in Fresno the past few days has been electric. It's really cool to see a city so behind their team. They played great ball and really deserve the attention they are getting!
- Managua8Green, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1I went to SJM............ go fresno?
- Ender2309, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3what a great time to live in fresno! anybody else love the front of the bee today?

- majordanger, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2The Bulldog Never Says No in Fresno. Congratulations!!!
- TruthTeller50, on 06/26/2008, -2/+0This proves there's still hope for the Texas Rangers and the Washington Nationals. But not the Mariners.
They need to trade all those foreigners, starting with Richie Sexton. - thebendds, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Congratulations to a team that willed its way to a championship! My wife and I can't wait to celebrate at the championship rally tonight at Beiden Field!

- humbubinc, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Beiden Field's the place to be at 6:00. This may be the only chance in our lifetime to witness success of this scale for Fresno State Athletics (considering it's only the 2nd national title in the school's history) and I, for one, definitely want to be part of the celebration! GO DOGS!

PLEASE SEEED!!! - iwiseman, on 06/26/2008, -0/+0Man! So proud to be a bulldog!!!
I hope they make a movie on this..
Go Dog! - decker12, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Several of the local Fresno TV stations are broadcasting the festivities starting at 6 PM. You should be able to see them streamed live on KSEE's website, http://www.ksee24.com/
- Asten77, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Another awesome CWS. I grew up watching it live, and nowadays have to watch on TV, but this was one of the more exciting and entertaining series in recent history! Congrats FSU.
- Gromit, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Disappointed Georgia alum here, but congrats to the west coast Dogs. After the way game 2 went, I kind of figured game 3 would go to Fresno State. I think Fresno would have found a way to beat anyone.
- soniyashrma, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1 Well done gentleman.
