- AmyVernon, on 11/12/2008, -0/+12Wow. Could you be any more laid back? But as you get further into the interview, you can see how much it means to him. At first, I thought he was in a coma, but he must just be in shock.
- thegoldenavatar, on 11/13/2008, -0/+10Anyone who says he didn't deserve this award is out of his mind. He may not have had the most wins, but he was on a terrible team, and his numbers are extremely impressive before you consider that he pitches for the Giants.
- merdiesel, on 11/14/2008, -0/+8As a life long Giants fan, Lincecum was easily the only thing that kept me watching this season. This kid is so fun to watch.
- KingBroseph, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6He gives me hope for the future of the Giants. Do not screw this one up Sabian.
- opensourcer, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5Congrats Tim. It's great to see you pitch all season. I can't wait to see you continue to develop in your splendid career. I know you and Brain Wilson set goals before the season sta. Other than winning another Cy Young, what will be your other goal? World Series win?
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5whoa this guy went to my high school
- vitaminz1990, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5Lincecum is amazing. I've played on that field they're standing on, it was amazing. Truly one of the best parks in all of baseball.
- jboitnott, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4It's the West Coast Amy - you know how we do out here. :-)
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4I can't believe I'm saying this to a Husky grad, but congratulations Mr.Lincecum. Another fine baseball product from the state of Washington.
GO COUGS! - jollybee34, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4great job timmy!
- doobiebrother, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4and the Giants paid how much for Barry Zito?
- denshvalaunt, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2I got so mad when Mike Wilbon dissed Lincecum on PTI, saying he didn't deserve it over CC, Webb, or Lidge. Well, ***** you Wilbon; Kornheiser is better than you anyways!
- samtpage, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2I never thought I'd be happy to watch NBC online video, but mlb.com really is the worst.
- Tegurit34, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Xeller, He was thought to be a #1/2 by people who gave his ERA any sort of weight. But if you looked at how he actually pitched, he was dead average: He was average at striking people out (6.7 K/G 2004-06), a tick below average at limiting free bases (3.8 BB/G), and extremely below average at keeping the ball on the ground (.38 GB%, average being .46).
[So actually, after looking it up, he was a *below* average pitcher when he hit free agency.]
What kept his ERA down in 2005-06 were things that had low year to year correlations, i.e., had very little to do with repeatable skill. In 2006 his LOB% was an unsustainable 78.5%, which not even Johan Santana can do year in and year out, and in 2005 his infield fly rate was 19.5 percent, or an incredible 1 in every 5 batters.
Worse, his repeatable skills were in decline. Every year from 04-06, he progressively missed less bats (K/Gs of 6.9, 6.9 and 6.2), walked more batters (3.4, 3.6, 4.0), and showed no signs of changing his extreme flyball ways to help negate these advantages to the batter for more double plays and less extra-base hits.
He was becoming worse and worse of a pitcher every year as a member of Oakland, and the Oakland defense and lady luck kept getting stronger. Lucky for him, the baseball gods kept his ERA stagnant and a GM who didn't know what he was doing offered him big money for past success. - yossarian24, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2His flexibility and ability to repeat such a demanding deliver is amazing. Makes it look like anyone could throw 95.
- AmyVernon, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2True, true...
- conradpaul, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2hell yes face of the g-men! congratulations timmy!
- Xeller, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2At the time though, Zito WAS the best pitcher on the free agent market. Certainly not worth 120 million+ contract, but he was thought to be a good #1/#2 on any starting rotation. I would think most people are lying if they claim that they knew Zito would be this bad when he signed his contract.
- Tegurit34, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Well, that's baseball dude.
- DirtPile, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3The elbow will be the first to go. The cuff can be maintained at stretch, but tendons will strain. His rotation in the shoulder is phenomenal, as seen from footage and photos. I'd say it approaches 210 degrees. The fore-delivery, though, given the velocity of his arm and the relatively low muscle densit of the elbow will cause elbow problems way before shoulder ones. Who know, though.
- El-Taco, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1ya WTF lince gets 405,000 a year the other cy young canadates gget an average of 9.4 million. someone's getting a pay increase......or ***** better.
- El-Taco, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2i went to the look-a-like contest, didnt win, though i should have. im a ***** carbon copy.
- allothersnsused, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Charlie Chaplin once lost a Charlie Chaplin look alike contest. Don't give up hope.
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1seriously. Memories of the Pierzynski trade still haunt me...we could sttill have Joe Nathan and Liriano...ugh
- sleeknerve, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1This is guy is the franchise for the giants, they really need to keep him
- Tegurit34, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1How many swirlies did he get?
- Tegurit34, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1$126 million.
Yeah. Worst pitching contract ever, and everyone with half a brain could see it a mile away from the first season. For a talent evaluator, Sabean is really bad at his job. - inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Tegurit34, couldn't have said it better myself. I'm guessing you're a Firejoemorgan.com reader? They closed up shop, you know. A sad day for all of us living in our mother's basements.
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1well my point was that someone like Lincecum deserves to play for a contender in games that actually matter. Thats how legacies are built. I wish that id have a chance to watch him pitch, but they don't broadcast too many giants games.
- doobiebrother, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1question is, does Lincecum deserve a contract like that
- HelplessSEAL, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Brian Sabean's not gonna be around anymore.... =( Next year is his last year on contract...
- Tegurit34, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1I've cruised FJM from time to time and honestly I should have read it more often, but I do recognize the significance it had on empowering the blogging movement in all sports. Without FJM the sites I read daily probably wouldn't exist and I'd still be oo'ing and ahh'ing at low ERAs and thinking how innovative WHIP is.
For general baseball I most frequent Fangraphs, THT and Beyond the Boxscore. - hawksfan03, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1dugg because he seems more nerdy than the average digger, but he's a badass baseball player
- nymphetamine, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Wait. You mean I don't have to pay for these games? All of them are free?!?!? Well my goodness. That's just terrific.
Please kill yourself. Take pics. Report back. (Don't ask me how that's gonna work; just do it.) - jec68, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1I hope this Cy Young was worth the coming rotator cuff surgeries for Tim! Way to run him out there for 138 pitches in a meaningless game Bruce Bochy!
- thisisapen, on 11/14/2008, -1/+0I'd hit it!
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/14/2008, -7/+2Its a crime that all that talent is wasted on such a bad team
- smoothmann, on 11/14/2008, -8/+1YAWN
- mayra1201, on 11/14/2008, -14/+2Lince cum?
