- mislam, on 01/08/2009, -1/+14Can't believe Atlanta is letting him go.
- Jericho6, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12I'm not sure Smoltz can really get healthy again, but it's risk worth taking for any big market team. Boston's not going to miss that $5 million if he just can't make it back.
Kind of sad for the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox reserves like Smoltz and Baldelli are better than most of their team. - grantino9, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13Smoltz to the Sox, Knowshon and Stafford going to the draft...please let this be a nightmare.
- gardenia, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12I was raised a Braves fan and he's been in Atlanta as long as I can remember. I'll be sad to see him playing for another team.
- EtherealSOC, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12NOOOO!!! The last remaining member of the 1995 Championship leaving the Braves to finish his career in Beantown? Say it aint so Smoltzie...
As a lifelong Braves fan I think it's really starting to sink in. Not only are they no longer contenders, but they are now the kind of team that free agents outright avoid as evidenced by their failure to land any significant arm for '09. It's a shame, I'm 26 and already talking about the good ole days... - mtgn37, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12As a lifetime Braves fan this breaks my heart. I don't know what is wrong with the front office that they couldn't pony up the money to keep him here. Its not like we are paying anyone else. Sure, maybe it wasn't about money, I've heard Smoltzy just wants a chance to compete somewhere and lord knows that Braves are not looking like that kinda place this season. Whatever the reason, I wish Smoltz the best, but I must admit, this really gets under my skin.
- cubs0110, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8Good luck John. Maybe this can be a capstone on a hall of fame career.
- jamalama, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7Hell yeah Red Sox. Our bench could probably beat the Royals 2 out of 3
- locondcoco, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6its like getting used to seeing Favre in a Jets uniform.
- greenanator, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6The Braves have no plan. Management decided to go after big name guys and got no one this offseason, and then gave Smoltzy a pitiful offer and let him go.
I wish him the best. He's not a sellout. He'll always be one of the greatest Braves ever. - DaMaker, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6Just stand up guy and class act. I am a long time Braves fan and it will be sad to see him go.
- JimmyTruth, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6My favorite player of all time leaving my favorite team is certainly a gut wrenching feeling;
However, I hope you pick up another ring and a couple more postseason wins Smoltz- Atlanta certainly isn't heading there this year.
Braves fans are really not happy with the front office, especially Frank Wren. 42 million to spend this offseason, and best they can do is trading away even more prospects for Javier Vazquez. The worst crime of all is allowing this organization to get to the point where absolutely no free agents will come here, even when we flash inordinate amounts of money their way. - Spartyon, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5baseball needs a salary cap.
- bigtoes, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Its hard to see Smoltzy leave the Braves . I hope he gets another crack at a championship. As long as I have been a Braves fan I don't remember an off-season as as somber as this . Its hard to see Bobby Cox ending his career like this as well .
- cadmiumpaint, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5It always sucks when a great player, especially a future HOF'er can't play his entire career for one team...Cal Ripken style. Atlanta really should give him whatever money he wants (within reason) to finish his career there.
As a sox fan i'd love to see Smoltz pitch for us. I'm sure he'll give a couple of great starts, and teach the younger guys on the staff a couple of things. - Rethcir, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6There's something evil about paying 5 million for a 41 year old coming off injuries? Not that I expect him to fail, but come on, this is stretching.
Also, no real fan should have an "alternative" team within their own goddamn division. - callanpalooza, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5I think this off season is just demonstrating how they are not exactly like the Yankees. Signing a quality pitcher coming off an injury plagued season on the cheap (Penny), signing a quality fourth outfielder and paying him what he's worth (Balldeli) and now giving an aging pitcher one more chance to win another championship while not overpaying. In an off season where the Yankees have spent over 400 million dollars on new contracts its hard to compare their tactics.
- hawksfan03, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5as a braves fan all I can say is :'(
we love you smoltzie! - holzp, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Nice, with Timlin gone the average age of the team was getting precariously low.
- allothersnsused, on 01/08/2009, -2/+6Whyyyyy smotlzy whyyy? Just go home and get some rest. Don't be another sellout.
- davewashere, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3What are you talking about? They're taking a (slight) risk on a guy who's old and has struggled with injuries. I think the Evil Empire banner still belongs on Yankee Stadium, because what they've done this offseason might be unprecedented in modern baseball history. In case you weren't paying attention, the Yankees have signed nearly every major free agent that they have a spot for on their roster. That includes the top 2 pitchers (although I would argue that A.J. Burnett is overrated and does indeed suck) AND the top hitter. The Red Sox signing Smoltz to an incentive-laden deal is the equivalent of eating the Yankees leftover scraps.
- cam18, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3.....
.....
*****! - FreddieD, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I predict the Royals will actually be relevant in major league baseball in about three years. They finally got rid of Allard Baird, their GM who missed on every first round pick not named Alex Gordon this century. He was seriously baseball's version of Matt Millen.
There's a reason he spends his days in the Boston organization fetching Theo Epstein's coffee now. - boardthis, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3great bulldog warrior. the problem is his body is breaking down. he and the sox will be lucky if he makes it out of the 1st month of the season healthy.
- jedinate, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I haven't followed him for a few years. Is there anything left in the tank?
- FMSfreebies, on 01/08/2009, -0/+32004 Playoffs where the Redsox came back from down 3 games to 0... and kicked ass the next 4 games knocking the yanks out.
- making Red Sox fans smile since '04. - x911gt2, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Frank Wren. EPIC FAIL.
- krahzee, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4Smoltz isn't betraying the Braves: He's just that into the history of the franchise that he wants to play in the city the team was founded in.
- Fallen7s, on 01/08/2009, -2/+4If he does leave, I hope he wins another championship, anything less and I'll be disappointed.
- tbechtx, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2*yawn*
- OdinThor, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2From one Boston team to another (which has its roots as a Cincinnati team).
While Smoltz is a good addition, I am not sure it is enough for the beloved Sox to beat the Evil Empire this year. - Foxcow, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2All the respect that I have for the man will disappear if he goes to the red sox.
- kekemortson, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2I blame Frank Wren and the Braves front office for their lackluster performance the last 24 months! Good luck Smoltzie!
- Cpd4224, on 01/08/2009, -2/+4Last time they signed an old pitcher (Schilling) it seemed to work out pretty well. I'd say this would be a great addition to the 09 squad.
- badenglishihave, on 01/08/2009, -2/+4Yankees fans - cocky bastards since the beginning of time.
- kekemortson, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Bad language, but good points.
- serif69, on 01/08/2009, -4/+6Awww, look who's getting all cocky now that they won the World Series a few years ago...
- twitrock, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Tigers or the Braves, don't be a bitch Smoltz
- NeoCortex, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3I feel sorry for Coco. Of all the teams to land on, he ends up with the Royals.
- greenanator, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2The Braves gave Smoltzy an offer that was kind of disrespectful when comparing to the Sox offer.
I'm a lifelong Braves fan and I don't blame him at all. If the offer was respectable he would be staying in Atlanta. - cococrispies, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2apparently you didnt get the memo that wagner is out of the year
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2apparently u didnt get the memo that the mets have to pay him $10.5 mil for 2009...n $8mil + a $1mil buyout for 2010
so they just wasted 19.5mil on someone who pitched 1 and a half good season for them (06' to half way through 07')
krod wont even need to be put in if they can't get a good middle reliever
...o yea, also.....WORLD ***** CHAMPIONS!
so delgado can go suck it - Blinker1315, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2I feel bad for Coco, too. It never really clicked for him offensively in Boston, although he's an amazing center fielder. But as a longtime Sox fan, dating back to the 60s, if Theo doesn't get another slugger this team will finish in 3rd, and that just sucks.
- methdwman3, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2I think it is yet to be seen if the Evil Empire can keep up with Boston - they have been the ones lagging behind over the last few years
- soupysoup56, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Frank Wren is secretly working for the Phillies and Mets. It's certain now. This is one bad off season for the Braves.
- whiteninja, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2money&winning>loyalty
- Rethcir, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2You're disregarding the signings of people like timlin, wells, colon...
- SnuKs, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2With Philly and the Mets on top, I'm sure they're rebuilding for the future.
- FreddieD, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2The article prompted a baseball-reference lookup. Traded as a minor leaguer from Detroit for Doyle Alexander, who only pitched a few more seasons before retiring. Ouch.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/alexado01.shtm ... - ProfessorRiffs, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3How sad.... what happened to loyalty in baseball? It used to be a part of what made it great. Schmidt, Mattingly, Ripken.... sucks to see the days of those kinds of players come to and end.
