- alilhappything, on 11/27/2007, -1/+26NOOOO!!
First Moss gets taken, then KG, now Johan....
digg for a mourning Minnesotan - rey1867, on 11/27/2007, -1/+11guess you can buy anything.... the future doesnt look good for the jays :(
- czarnick420, on 11/27/2007, -4/+13Stupid ***** Twins, they better not let Santana go!
- pipdip, on 11/27/2007, -2/+10If Minnesota loses another good player, I'm going to flip. Moss, KG, Ortiz (to a lesser amount), we lose Torri to LA last week, now possibly Santana to Satan... I mean the Yankees. The Twins NEED to keep Santana. They have the money now that Torri is gone.
- spin-docta, on 11/27/2007, -2/+10Hopefully he won't turn out to be another Carl Pavano if he comes to NY.
- jbrevik, on 11/27/2007, -2/+8Ummmm.....And the Red Sox dont throw money around?
- foobarf00, on 11/27/2007, -5/+11Ah, finally some good pitching for NY Yankees.
- 10scott10, on 11/27/2007, -6/+12Yuck the Fankees
- mal1964, on 11/27/2007, -0/+6The twins will get prospects that will play over the next twenty years, you have to trade him.The twins cant afford to sign him so trade him and load up. For years they have made out like a bandit with trades.
- xpose, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5The Twins would want Hughes, Melky, and maybe a 3rd prospect. Plus Santana wants at least 25 million a year for this trade to happen. Not to mention he has a no trade clause in his contract, so he has final say so this way he gets the money he wants.
- shootinputin187, on 11/27/2007, -1/+6The Yankees organization just doesn't get it. Trading away young players before last season to get rotting ***** like Randy Johnson and *****-eating-always-injured Roger Clemens--who was given arguably the most expensive quarter-of-a-year contract deal ever ($28 mill...wtf?!)--this team can spend because they can which pisses me off. Drop a salary cap on baseball and watch the Yankees slide. I mean seriously if that deal for Roger Clemens was suppose to get more people to watch Yankees baseball--as if there wasn't enough people--then that is just ridiculous.
- PunkFenixJT, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5I hope they don't give too much away to get him. I like all the Yankees young talent now; Joba, Kennedy, Hughes, Melky, and Cano. They all have great potential. Out of all of them I think the most likely to go are Kennedy and Melky, though I think that would be sad because with Melky gone we'd be back to having Damon's dreadful arm in center field.
- Jerky1312, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5It's how you spend the money and the money has to spent on pitching. The Yankees have an amazing line up, but a poor rotation. The Sox spend the 2nd most money, but they have a great pitching staff. Spending a ***** on money is going to be a good move for the Yankees, because they can afford it. Spending a ***** on Arod, was a stupid move in my opinion. For the money gave him, you could get a couple of very good arms. A coupe good arms go a long way in the playoffs.
- Misinformant, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4PAVANO, WHAT?
- Jerky1312, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4They haven't won anything in years. What are you talking about? The Marlins do a better job of trading their talent for prospects than the Twins do and they have actually won a title that way.
- Jerky1312, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4It's not a matter of stupidity, its about economics. Minnesota is a small market city and they can't afford to keep their high profile players when their contracts run up. They are essentially the Florida Marlions of the American League. The thing is, the Marlins have mastered the arm of playing with young talent and a mixture of veterans to hold the team together. That is all you need sometimes and Colorado proved that a hot team can go a long way in baseball, as did the Cardinals a couple of years ago.
- Jerky1312, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3The talk is about sending Cano, Melky and a pitcher. It seems like a lot, but if it means winning a title in the short term, I think the Yankees would do it. Also, pitching wins titles, not offense and with the offense the Yanks have, they can do without Melky and Cano.
- rey1867, on 11/27/2007, -2/+5lol... i feel bad for you.
but it's all karma..... right now boston is the sports town and tomorrow it will be minnesota (no it wont... but i hope that made you feel better) ;) - TimmyGUNZ, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3And what "very good arms" would they have been able to buy in this free agent pool? This is a very weak pick of starting pitchers. Santana is going to take money AND talent as he's not a free agent yet and the Twins are going to get as much as they can for him. The Yankees NEEDED to get A-Rod back because they would be forced to give up young talent to replace his position adequately.
- gravylookout, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Remember the AJ deal?
- masterm1nd, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Minnesota consistently has the top people in multiple sports, can't do ***** with it, and then trade them away...
- inactive, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Yes, the Johnson and Clemens moves were both bone headed. But Clemens cost them nothing but cash, which they have more than enough of, and the guys they traded for Johnson haven't amount to much of anything. Navaro is ***** (hitting .227 in his first full season for Tampa), Halsey is a back of rotation guy, and Vazquez (who was never cut out for New York anyway) has really only had one good season (this past one with Chicago) since the trade.
Comparing either of those moves, which where for pitchers who were over the hill and well into their 40s, to a potential trade for a left handed, two time Cy Young award winning 29 year-old pitcher, is just obscene. But if you still want to try and do it, that's your prerogative. I have just one question: where can I get some of what you're smoking? - drib, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3I might be behind the times, but wasn't Chamberlain supposed to enter the starting rotation starting next season?
- mal1964, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano, and Boof Bonser, for a better than average catcher. AJ is gone and the twins still have all three.
- Jerky1312, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Getting Santana would help the rotation, but Pavano and Moose are both shot, there better years are far behind them. Wang is the only established pitcher in the rotation right now, Kennedy has to prove himself for a full year, as does Hughes.
- sloppychris, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Eff that, I'd take ~5 years of Phil Hughes and ~4 years of Melky Cabrera for nearly no cost before keeping Santana and watching him walk in 08 any day.
- rdmorley, on 11/27/2007, -1/+3though i realize that many people will downmod you, i agree....owners should be willing to spend money on players in order to put a team on the field that will reap profit....you look at teams like kansas city (which has one of the richest owners) and they are terrible every year. I am not totally agreeing with the way the steinbrenners work, but i think an owner needs to be willing to spend money in order to put a decent team on the field and thus win games.
- flamingBurrito, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2ugh, the yankees will benefit more from keeping hughes in the long run than getting santana. Hope this falls through
- maize, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2All you crying Yankee fans are delusional. Santana is the best pitcher in baseball, and even his 'down' season' is a career year for most pitchers. A 2-time Cy-Young winning southpaw approaching his prime. Do you think that happens every day?
To get the best you must give up the best. Prepare to give up Cano, Joba, AND another top pitcher if you want to be in contention with the Red Sox within the next 5 years. - jbrevik, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2This is what the Twins do. They farm great prospects use them to try to get to the playoffs and sell them when they think they will want too much money.
- Jerky1312, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2I actually he wanted a 6 year 120 million dollar contract. I don't see 25 million a year for him. He's not a young arm like Beckett.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Exactly. Santana is hands-down the best, most consistent pitcher in baseball today. The guy never gets injured and has many years ahead of him. Comparing a trade for him to Clemens/Johnson just shows your ignorance.
- PunkFenixJT, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Maybe if the Jays put some effort into this offseason. I've heard about nothing from them trying to sign free agents or trade for big time players.
- krahzee, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Catch 22 for the Yankees. On one hand Santana is that good. On the other any package will create big hole for them. Not only do they stand to lose one position player in Cano or Melky, but it would likely take 2 pirching prospects to swing the trade. If Chamberlin is the untouchable, what do they do if Rivera gets hurt? Who closes? They have a starting Rotation of Moose, Wang, Petite (maybe) Hughes or Kennedy and Chambelin. Six guys if Petite doesn't retire. If he does thats 5 guys. Then they trade 2 starters for 1. 4-5 guys.
Sure if Rivera goes down they could always move Chamberlin back to the pen, but then Igawa is the 5 starter. Plus you can't put Joba back in the pen once he's streched out to start without risking his arm. - evodude, on 11/27/2007, -1/+3God damnit. First the outdoor stadium, now this?
- Rethcir, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2New York is not in New England. But New York sports ARE overrated.
- Glitchr, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2The Yanks just spent 400 million on the players that got Joe Torre run out of town. Wasn't that interesting? All the old players got raises. Joe Torre was "offered" a %30 pay cut. They even paid Arod more money than they offered him for the extension. The Yanks completely flip-flopped on their pledge not to negotiate after the opt out. I can't believe they aren't taking more crap because of this. Cashman and the Steinbrenners are liars. How else can you describe their cave in? They HAD Arod's ridiculous contract properly evaluated and NO TEAM was even close to Boras absurd demands. The Yanks completely screwed the leagues salary structure for decades to come. Say whatever you want about the Red Sox, but they do not overpay the players ANYTHING like the Yanks. The Red Sox set a value and then stick to it. Pedro, Lowe, Damon, Schilling & Lowell are all good examples of this. Some stay and some go. The Red Sox do not have to bribe players to play in Boston like NY does.
The Yanks are desperate and need Santana. Besides the millionaire geezers they brought back, the also lost Clemens and Petitte declined his option. How is this team better than the team who choked last year against the Indians? Who is the #1 starter? If you say Wang, then you were in a coma and missed last years playoff swoon. Wang is a #3 at best. Yep, The Yanks need a pitcher like Santana. I hope the Twins get a kings ransom. - rabidg00se, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Whoops, Hughes, not Kennedy. Although Kennedy's a decent arm too.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 11/27/2007, -0/+21. Santana >>>>> Beckett. Beckett is a good pitcher, don't get me wrong, but he's not as consistent as Santana, and he's very injury prone.
2. Beckett is about a year younger than Santana. - mal1964, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Yes they do most of the time, but they traded Johan Santana to Minnesota for Jared Camp that right who.
- Bukowsky, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2This would be great for the Yankees. The Boston Red Sox have proved to be the best MLB team when it comes to pitchers. If the Yank's want to compete, they will need some better arms in their rotation...
- Spoomeister, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2This is not Yet Another Yankee Hating Post, honest. But I gotta say I'm sick of this ***** every offseason.
If you keep up with the sports radio and sports blogs, there's this air of inevitability when it comes to the biggest names. The default is always that a) they want to play only for a big-market team, b) they want as much money as can possibly be gotten, and c) only the big-market teams can afford them. So when the top of the crop comes along each year, it's always the same damned teams popping up in the negotiations. There's this automatic assumption that Johan is only going to go to New York (either team), Boston, LA or Anaheim (no amount of rebranding contortions makes me call the Angels an LA team, sorry). Why not Seattle? Why not one of the Chicago teams? Why not San Diego? With the amount of $ floating around the game, it never has to be about $ if a team wants the guy badly enough.
To be a homer, and since it's hot stove season, let me throw out an example: Santana to Seattle. Adam Jones (to replace Hunter), Adrian Beltre (to upgrade Punto), Brandon Morrow (for bullpen / 5th starter) to the Twins. Santana would get the chance to work with pitching coach Stottlemayer. Throw $20m / 7 years at Santana, with incentives for milestones like all-star team, cy young, complete games, postseason, etc. that we all know he'll hit anyway. Johan and Felix become the 1-2 punch for Seattle for the next 5 years+. Twins get a rising star in Jones and an instant upgrade on defense at 3rd. Seattle can then go get Tejada or someone to fill in for missing Beltre's glove.
Won't happen, though, because "everyone knows the elite players only play in Boston or New York, or sometimes in California". *eyeroll* *sigh* - mattyice11, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Hughes would have to be part of the deal. There's no way around it.
- Glitchr, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2The Bruins? I suppose the Revolution lost in the finals if you want to hang your hat on that..
Red Sox are the closest thing to a dynasty in this decade. The Patriots are a runaway train this season and are by far the most successful football franchise in the last 25 years. The Celtics? hard to get to excited about 12 games but they have the best record in the league and have only lost once.
Overrated? How? Media hype? Is that what you are concerned with? I bet the media would LOVE to report about a failing New England team, but for that to happen some other team has to beat them. That just ain't happening right now. You can call that being overrated, but I think it is reality. - TimmyGUNZ, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2How can you blame Steinbrenner for playing by the rules of baseball? Seriously, is he supposed to NOT spend the money if he's got it to give other teams a fair advantage? I'm a DIE HARD Yankee fan, but I would love to see a salary cap. Unfortunately, I don't see this happening any time soon. In the meantime, if you want to blame anyone for the lack of parity in the MLB, blame the player's union, not the Yankees. Steinbrenner and co. are doing nothing wrong and anyone that uses the excuse of their spending as the root of their hatred for the Yankees is only jealous that their owner doesn't care as much about his team winning as much as he cares about lining his pockets.
- sloppychris, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2Aw, what a poor little fan of team with a 200+ million dollar payroll. You get no sympathy from me.
- AROERS, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2The Twins are a AAAA team, great farm system for the big spenders
- woj16, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1I disagree with this decision. The Yanks have a solid core of young pitching. All they need to do is wait a few years before they are World Series contenders
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Interview with Johan Santana >>> http://adultcelebz.com/interview/?p=Johan-Santana
- omgTHEPATRIOTS, on 11/27/2007, -3/+4If Cashman trades any of the following: Cabrera, Joba, Tabata, Hughes, Kennedy or Cano I'm just gonna say ***** it and become a Dodgers fan. Upper Management has pissed me off to the point I can no longer follow this team.
