Japanese suffer at the hands of MLB's imperalism
blogs.guardian.co.uk — In an effort to reach a worldwide audience, MLB has exported America's favorite pastime overseas to Japan. Is it good for the game as a whole? Here's a great article that makes a case that "holding Major League Baseball games in Japan may rake in the cash, but it does nothing good for the sport's worldwide development."

- digg it
- alibaig413, on 03/26/2008, -36/+13y is this on the front page?
- jemka, on 03/26/2008, -3/+3Didn't you see the video of digg.com's office?
- TheLastFreeMan, on 03/26/2008, -6/+23HOW ***** HARD IS IT TO TYPE TWO EXTRA LETTERS?!??!?
IT'S "WHY", DUMBASS.- brettsmaname, on 03/26/2008, -11/+3I hardly believe this is a topic worth yelling about. I suggest you check with a specialist with possible anger management issues...
- boombye, on 03/26/2008, -2/+2I suggest you check with a specialist about the yelling you seem to be hearing or whatever voices you hear getting loud in your head, all I see is a dude typing in caps...
- fxu1989, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6SHUT THE ***** UP
THIS TOPIC IS DEFINITELY WORTH YELLING ABOUT
- brettsmaname, on 03/26/2008, -11/+3I hardly believe this is a topic worth yelling about. I suggest you check with a specialist with possible anger management issues...
- someone173406, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1Because digg works that way. Bitch about it, you get ***** over. It's quite simple.
- AreTooDeTo, on 03/26/2008, -2/+9what's the problem with this article? it was well written and it's nice to see a little diversity on the front page. i get sick of all the gizmodo/4chan *****.
- jeimus, on 03/26/2008, -22/+4Who cares about baseball? Its March madness time!
- Chebsi, on 03/26/2008, -3/+7I care. And what's "March Madness"?
- Kigmal, on 03/26/2008, -7/+3March Madness? LOL only in america
- drizzlelicious, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1It's where UNC routes every single team in its path to win the NCAA champsionship
- Chebsi, on 03/26/2008, -3/+7I care. And what's "March Madness"?
- TheLastFreeMan, on 03/26/2008, -15/+2*Sigh* Another victim of American inperialism. At least Japan knows how it feels now.
- antimatter19, on 03/26/2008, -2/+12You don't even know what you are talking about. What would you have, Japanese players banned from baseball? If that was the case then your comment would have been, *Sigh* Another victim of American racism.
You probably didn't even read it. You saw suffer and imperalism in the title and thought you could make a anti-american statement and get a couple thumbs up- TheLastFreeMan, on 03/26/2008, -3/+1Look, we all know if diggers read half the stuff they digg, 99% of front page stories wouldn't be on the front page. Case in point: MrBabyMan, msaleem, makimaki. Now, am I to blame, or is it the trend of misleading, often exaggerated headlines to get people to click on them in the first place?
- Murdats, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4you mean like newspapers and any other publication?
- TheLastFreeMan, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1What's a "newspaper"?
- antimatter19, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1your partially to blame. Most people will at least read the article before using it to bash their country.
- Murdats, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4you mean like newspapers and any other publication?

- darthbob, on 03/26/2008, -5/+24Why did you substitute 'y' for 'why'?
- Shootfast, on 03/26/2008, -3/+23y did u not click reply?
- blackdude, on 03/26/2008, -5/+933 diggs and on the frontpage; somebody hit the lotto
- thedzigner, on 03/26/2008, -2/+4Hmmm...you're not joking. How can this be?
I've got a story submitted just little over an hour ago, and over 40 diggs, and it isn't on the front page. Digg is puzzling at times.- jefbob, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2It depends on what section your story is in. Stories from the sports section always seem like they have less diggs than other sections when they get to the front page.
- thedzigner, on 03/26/2008, -2/+4Hmmm...you're not joking. How can this be?
- Conwaysb0718, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5*****' 'ell mate, just get to the bloody point.
- jjones20, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1If youre having problems getting the roids to the players, take the players to the roids.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 03/26/2008, -12/+9This article doesn't make much sense, are you upset that Japanese players are going to the MLB and leaving Japan's baseball league? Because the place to go to play sports is the US, just like the place to go if you're gay is Europe.
- boomshakalaka, on 03/26/2008, -2/+7so where in Europe are you?
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/26/2008, -5/+1He's obviously bitter bout Hitler.
He hated gay jews.
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/26/2008, -5/+1He's obviously bitter bout Hitler.
- wellyuk, on 03/26/2008, -8/+3Buried. Reported. Blocked.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7The reason all three of those actions are buttons is so you don't have to tell everyone about it.
- akamurph, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1ahh, did he hurt your feelings? You must live in Canada, cuz if you lived in the US and your feelings were hurt that easily you wouldn't visit digg that much...
- jomojo, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0Funny.
Sounds like some people got offended, I guess you're not supposed to imply a group of people visit any particular continent. But we know they're not going to Asia, the President of Iran hasn't seen 'em.

- boomshakalaka, on 03/26/2008, -2/+7so where in Europe are you?
- geoffg, on 03/26/2008, -7/+1Down with imperialism!!!
- NeptuneBkc, on 03/26/2008, -20/+7Baseball is a dieing sport, let it go people. It is only fun when you actually play baseball.......watching paint dry is more FUN than watching MBL games.
- logiktrip, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6What about MLB games?
- ma6ic4l, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8Dying? Check the attendance figures next week when the Red Sox play the Dodgers in the Colosseum. 120k+ people for a baseball game. An exhibition baseball game. Also, please turn on your spellcheck.
- iloveazngurlzs, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6The A's lost to the redsox last night in the first game of the season, in Japan.
- danz32, on 03/26/2008, -2/+22The game created excitement in Japan; the stadium looked sold out. Sorry you had to get up early to watch the game, but its nice to give exposure to the sport worldwide.
And, its nice to let the Japanesse see some of the players that we took from them :)- pauleric, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Yeah, this guy is complaining that they go play baseball where there are a lot of fans. That's a problem? Oh, and they wore a little patch on their uniforms that's too commercial. Instead he wants them to go places nobody cares about baseball and lose money, and that's going to expand baseball's fanbase somehow.
- boombye, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4When I notice that this article about baseball comes from UK publication, I decided it's not worth my time, let alone this person seems to be surprised that the Japanese have been loving baseball for a long time.
- bearcat8543, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Exactly. That was the whole point of this game and i think it was quite successful. Plus a 10 inning down to the wire game to start off is pretty nice as well
- Sunflare670, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1I swear to god Dan, if you end another comment with a smiley, I will end you.
- pauleric, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Yeah, this guy is complaining that they go play baseball where there are a lot of fans. That's a problem? - RedHeadedFreak, on 03/26/2008, -1/+25Suffering? It's an effing game people, not a war or siege of Tokyo. Tone down the melodrama.
- boombye, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1This dude from the UK just found out that people in Japan play baseball or enjoy watching baseball games for the first time in his life or something lols.
- antimatter19, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6This must have been dugg just because it had suffer and imperalism in the title.
- troymccluresf, on 03/26/2008, -1/+15So basically, you don't like logos on uniforms, and it's America's fault that the Japanese apparently suck at running baseball teams, compared to MLB. Gotcha.
- airwalkery2k, on 03/26/2008, -0/+11Japanese baseball? Go Hanshin Tigers!! Beat the Yomiuri Giants.
- CoolDude330, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1This algorithm is confusing at times...
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/26/2008, -5/+3"And now there's a beachball on the field..."
I never realised how boring this game is.- bxblox, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1Too many games in a season. There's not really much excitement unless you're a fan of the team or you're watching playoffs.
- bearcat8543, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1just because you don't understand the game doesnt mean its boring.
- azurite, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0What do you say we take a relaxed attitude towards work and watch the
baseball game? The Nye Mets are my favorite squadron. - DonalNY, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Japanese players have been coming to the US prior to 2000. American players and coaches would play in Japan and bring back tales of the best players. MLB actually had a kind of traveling All-Star team go there over the winter.
The increase in frequency of Japanese players coming over has more to do with the internet and easier air travel than two games being played there. - p51d007, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1MLB has sucked since Curt Flood in 1969, walked out, and since the reserve clause was struck down in
1975. Look at the salaries from the beginning of baseball, to 1975, then look at them from 1975 on.
There is NO team loyalty anymore. In fact, there is NO team. You have 9 INDIVIDUALS playing a game for the money only. I quit watching baseball, or going to the games since the late 70's.
It is a past time that has passed its time!- buddahead9, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1So if someone offered you more money at a different company to do the same job you wouldn't leave out of loyalty?
I agree it sucks that players change teams so much... but... I'd probably do the same thing. - DonalNY, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Ya, lets go back to the days when players were indentured servants, with every aspect of their lives in control of the teams. [/sarcasm]
The teams never showed loyalty to the players. Why should the players show it to the teams?
Know why the White Sox threw the WS in 1919? Because in 1918, the BoSox won, but the owners refused to pay them a bonus or give them a raise, even though the revenues increased.
The owners for decades were able to skirt government regulation pretty much ever industry has to abide by (ex: they have an anti-trust exemption), and can still exploit the market forces other industries have to handle.
You obviously didn't watch those games of the 1960s too closely. It was about individual achievement then too. - kjk437, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Too bad the reserve clause was basically slavery.
- buddahead9, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1So if someone offered you more money at a different company to do the same job you wouldn't leave out of loyalty?
- SaladCactusKing, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2This may be the most unintentionally hilarious headline I've ever seen on Digg. It evokes the imagery of poor Japanese minor-leaguers crying as they are beaten with bats and roughed up by evil American Umpires and Shortstops.
"If only there was someone who could play baseball for the people!" They cry. "A baseman with the batting power of Rodriguez and the philosophy of Marx. Free Japan from the wrath of Major League Baseball!"
(No, I'm not high) - HanSolo69, on 03/26/2008, -7/+2Seriously? People actually watch, much less enjoy, baseball?
- melonhedd, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1How is this suffering? Being deprived of MLB is a good thing.
- Soliden, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Baseball is HUGE in Japan. It's not imperialism in the least sense. Considering players like Diskae, Ichiro, and Okujima come from Japan and play on US teams, I'd hardly say that this qualifies as imperialism.
- Number23, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3Wow, brits in a brits paper hating on something American. You'd think they could content themselves writing about england.
- MrARPA, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1AFAIK David Lengel is not a Brit, he's from the US and used to commentate on US sports coverage for UK viewers.
- thecoolestguy, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2And I guess Toyota and Sony are committing industrial imperialism when they take wide swaths of the American market share.
- oldcyborg, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Oh, for Christ's Sake!!!!!! We got some warped people here, you know???
