- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -5/+58It's about time.
- Azohko, on 09/05/2008, -4/+37And so Baseball slowly evolves into Blurnsball....Someday (sigh)
- billjimbob, on 09/05/2008, -0/+30For the people saying it slows the game down... you're wrong. It took a little over 2 minutes for the play to be upheld on replay. How it went before instant replay:
Rays' manager comes out to argue for a minute
Umps get together, then eventually:
a. Upholds the call, in which case the Rays manager comes out again and complains until he is thrown out, getting in his money's worth.
b. Reverses the call, in which case the Yankees manager comes out and complains etc. etc.
In a situation like this, it GREATLY increases the speed of the game.
PLUS, instant replay has been around for a week or two and there has only been one use of it. It isn't like it is being used every game. They got the call right, and ultimately, that's what matters. - mikesaint27, on 09/05/2008, -5/+30Anyone else notice how A-Rod starts to hit once the Yankees are out of it and there are no more clutch situations?
Ah, I love watching the Yankees fail. - BugsSport, on 09/05/2008, -7/+30i don't see anything wrong with making the right call
- GregFD3S, on 09/05/2008, -2/+2060% of the time, it works every time.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -11/+28"It's very fitting I'm involved [in the first instant replay]."
-A-Rod, major league douchebag with an ego the size of the national debt. - GrieVe, on 09/05/2008, -3/+19All of this complaining about instant replay seems pretty ridiculous to me. It's only being used on home runs being fair/foul/actual home runs, which is a pretty big deal. The other night it took under 3 minutes to resolve the issue. Considering it is unlikely to be used in a game at all, and it will be pretty rare for it to be used more than once in a game, that is perfectly acceptable. With baseball being a relatively low scoring game in the first place, especially with a dominant pitcher on the mound, one run can mean the difference in the game. Shouldn't they get that call right?
- palehorse864, on 09/05/2008, -2/+16Apart from the word Blurn, everything you said was complete gibberish.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -25/+38That's like making something slow and boring...even MORE slow and boring.
- Tom10803, on 09/05/2008, -1/+12Yes he is. the ball went around the foul pole in fair territory and then landed foul. Fair ball. Correct call.
- soccerman90, on 09/05/2008, -1/+12Futurama- watch it, learn it, love it
- mbonzo531, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11Whats more important, keeping off an extra 2 minutes of game time, or preventing human error?
- quiggibub, on 09/05/2008, -0/+10It's really hard to notice when baseball slows down.
- jstowell, on 09/05/2008, -2/+10You're an idiot
- Feep, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7I know. Using technology to ensure the proper call is being made, it's just despicable.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7Amen.
- RedS0x, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7It was the correct call, and that's coming from a Sox fan..of course I don't really know WHO I want to play when the Yankees play the Rays..
- cadmiumpaint, on 09/05/2008, -4/+10took 3 minutes out of the game. welcome to the modern era.
- RedS0x, on 09/05/2008, -3/+9Well then don't watch it..
- maddendude, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6They kinda do. The umpire goes into his replay booth where he has a 20 inch HDTV and a phone. He calls the MLB Replay center, they have all the camera angles possible at hand, they show the angles on the TV, where the umpire can have anything slowed down, paused, zoomed in, etc. Then he makes the call of HR or not.
When the umpire believes he has conclusive evidence, he makes the call. Thats what happened here I guess, where he was able to make the call relatively fast. But with the high quality TV, cameras, and zooms, I would assume pretty much all decisions will be accurate. - StratoStreak, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6Why did they start using it now?? Why not wait until the beginning of next season and have a whole regular season to work out kinks before the playoffs?
- freedomics, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5I was at the game, sitting in the left outfield seats. I didn't even realize they were reviewing the play. I just figured the Rays managers were questioning the call. Baseball has so many interruptions and pauses (switching pitchers, for example) that a few minutes for an instant replay isn't that big of a deal. It doesn't belong in fast-paced games like hockey or basketball, though.
A-Rod crushed that ball, but the highlight of the game was seeing one of the obnoxious Yankees fans a few seats down from me get tasered by the police when he physically resisted getting ejected. In his defense, there were plenty of obnoxious Rays fans pushing his buttons. - tingley, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5Buried as inaccurate. As the Montgomery Advertiser points out, instant replay was used a single, unsanctioned time in 1999, after which MLB forbid its further use. via Deadspin: http://deadspin.com/5045301/instant-replay-ii-rise ...
- iamdan1, on 09/05/2008, -2/+6I love watching the Yankees fail too!
- seandfeeney, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4Man I wish I could digg and bury this at the same time (guess I will just not do anything to achieve that goal)
-1 for A-Rod and the Yanks
+1 for use of instant replay in baseball - VinnieDaMac, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Welcome to the 21st century MLB.
- rollerboy, on 09/05/2008, -2/+5When I read the title I thought it was from the onion.
- maddendude, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4Instant Replay is only used for questionable homeruns. They'll never use it anywhere in the infield. Theres way too many traditionalists out there for that to happen.
It was its first time, and it was clearly not effective. Rodriguez destroyed the ball and it went curved over the foul pole. It eventually hit foul territory, but the question was, did it pass the pole in fair territory. A side-view was needed to confirm that. We don't know for sure if they had a side view, if a different tv crew had it or whatnot.
Only the people sitting up in that corner of the stadium would have known for sure. Or should I say, person. It was a Rays game in the middle of the week, at night, when they were down late. Even the janitor left early. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Nope, I'm just a Mets fan.
- harvinator24, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2AS a yankee fan, why the ***** can't A-rod hit in the clutch.
Yanks (and boston) are losing to the devil rays. wtf is happening. - hatepaste, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Ahhh...This isn't about Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin. Awesome!
- Typhoon2009, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Yeah, for a second there I thought they meant replaying the shot from a different angle on the broadcast feed... I'm like "yeah, welcome to a while ago."
- santiago1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2 Dugg for the tasered Yankmee fan! Tase 'em all, bro!
- ry4nsm1th, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Don't call him A-Rod anymore, its "Double-play Rod."
- ohhaiitsryan, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2because theyve ***** up so many times this season already.
and a lot of people still remember that manny dinger last postseason that hit "the yellow part of the wall, thats probably a homer, but not necesarily, so its still in fair play".
yeah, it sucks that they didnt get on it at the beginning of the season, but id rather they get calls right now, rather than not at all. - mikesaint27, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2tcasey, are you serious?
Lay off the drugs, man. A-Rod never played for the Marlins....wow what are you on? Save it for the weekend. - captmorgan555, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Kinda makes me proud hearing a Sox fan almost hating the Rays as much as the Yankees. GO RAYS!
- mikesaint27, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1A-Rod fills his stat sheet year in and year out, but HE NEVER WINS.
A-Rod is a cancer, and an expensive one at that. No team will ever win with A-Rod, but he'll make sure that his stats are good each season. - barnwecp, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1you are all retarded if you think we shouldn't use technology to enforce the rules. it makes baseball (already mediocre sport) bearable because the rules actually now matter
- RedS0x, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Well I don't hate the Rays nearly as much as the Yankees...actually I don't hate the Rays at all. The question is: would I rather get the satisfaction of the Rays losing or gain a game on the Rays?
- ohhaiitsryan, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1that was the absolute beauty of it! that pitch was perfect, and all i could do was sit there and pray he made him pay for it. afterwards there was zero mention of it, because the announcers had such boners for the replay.
- mikesaint27, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Still, he didnt win there either.
No team with A-Rod will EVER win a World Series. - 4NDr01D, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2up next, instant replay in golf!
yes, Mr. Mickelson, it really did go in the water! - fattehboi, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Wow Arod didn't hit into a double play?!
- tcasey22, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Oh my goodness excuse my faux pas, I meant Mariners not marlins... whoops.
- stubear, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but A-Rod buckles under pressure. Most of those home-runs are when the team is already up or they are so far down that even a grand slam wouldn't help. A-Rod is an albatross. You'll also notice that NO team he has been on has gone to the World Series, much less the play-offs until he went to the Yankees. He got his chance in the play-offs finally and he pulled a karate kid on Bronson Arroyo. That was the most beautiful screw-up I've ever seen in baseball. Look at that big ol' hamburger helper hand (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2004/news/st ...
- HappyScrappy, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1They got the call right before they used instant replay too.
So, it did slow down the game, by 2 minutes, and it didn't improve anything. - Digglet69, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Smells like gasoline
