- thecheat1, on 09/22/2008, -3/+53Feels so wrong to leave this stadium behind.
- joerod, on 09/22/2008, -3/+42and hello new yankee stadium with more expensive seats!
- deezp1, on 09/22/2008, -7/+45...And hello playoffs!!
oh wait.. - TxPalmer, on 09/22/2008, -11/+39I hope the Yankees get cursed for destroying one of the oldest and still fully functioning stadiums in baseball history!
This is baseball blasphemy! - CaptRage, on 09/22/2008, -3/+28Goodbye, you will be missed!
- machosos, on 09/22/2008, -3/+27first thumbs down!
- jknevitt, on 09/22/2008, -1/+18Incorrect.
Yankee Stadium opened April 18, 1923. Fenway Park opened April 20, 1912. Fenway is the oldest of the current MLB parks, and that includes the old Yankee Stadium. - twertyto, on 09/22/2008, -6/+22Did they really need the sound of the crowd cheering?
- jedsmith, on 09/22/2008, -1/+17This is about as sad, to me, as when Detroit closed Tiger Stadium for Comerica Park. As a resident of Detroit who had gone to Tiger Stadium as a little boy, even into my twenties, Tiger Stadium held a lot of memories for me. I'm sure for thousands, maybe millions of New Yorkers and "originally from" New Yorkers, the same holds true there. While I have never been to Yankee Stadium, it is one of the most recognized icons even for non-baseball fans, and it will be missed.
There is an outdoors, guys, even if you don't believe it! Going to the game is a little different than watching it on TV. - fribhey, on 09/22/2008, -0/+13here's the direct link to the panoramic photo used for it:
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/flash/multim ... - iEvan, on 09/22/2008, -0/+13Before demolition they should invite local little league teams to play there just for the sheer thrill of it.
- Ganpachi, on 09/22/2008, -0/+12pfffffft. The sports team from my area is superior to the sports team from your area. So suck it.
- chezidom, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10amazing
- gtluke, on 09/22/2008, -5/+13blame McCain!
- the0ther, on 09/22/2008, -1/+9this is such a stupid mistake. ny taxpayers have just shelled out a billion dollars for a new venue for douchebag yankees fans.
- cyrusuncc, on 09/22/2008, -2/+10Boo :(
Why does everything have to be destroyed in this country? Let's rebuild the white house next! - OneLess, on 09/22/2008, -0/+7Yes, out of more than 300 million people, you're the only one.
- PunkFenixJT, on 09/22/2008, -0/+7He's technically right. Everything before Yankee stadium in 1923 was a "Park" or some other title. Yankee Stadium was the first 3 tiered baseball facility in the baseball and first to be known as a "Stadium"
- LomasLou, on 09/22/2008, -0/+7Actually it was the first ballpark to be referred to as a "stadium".
- warispeace21, on 09/22/2008, -1/+8Or during. That would be a hell of a game.
- klitzbtc, on 09/22/2008, -2/+8more importantly hello yankee stadium with ***** ridiculous PSLs.
- Ryan2845, on 09/22/2008, -1/+7First baseball stadium? Um no.
I have no idea which one was first but it wasn't yankee stadium (opened 1923). Baseball was played in stadiums in the 1800s and even New Yorks Polo Grounds was built prior - snotrokit, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6not sure, i blocked his lame ass and reported it. ***** em.
- iamnobody8614, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6It's the NEW YORK Times.
Besides, even you don't like (or even hate) the Yankees, you can't deny the amount of baseball history attached to the place. - selmer, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6Dude, you've been on digg for over a year. Really?
- PunkFenixJT, on 09/22/2008, -0/+5The stadium could not be updated anymore. They had already renovated the majority of it in the 70s, but under the stands, where the clubhouses and walkways are, apparently it looked and felt old as hell. Not to mention the visitor's clubhouse was pretty F'n tiny.
Personally I approve of the new stadium. Its right across the street and brings back many memories of the Original (pre-renovation) stadium, but with all modern amenities. That being said, I'll still miss this one just for the history and nostalgia - kmlove, on 09/22/2008, -5/+10This is sad. The stadium could have easily been updated some, but no look at us, we buy championships, oh wait...
- onwardknave, on 09/22/2008, -2/+7The difference between a stadium and a park is semantic. Choice of the word "stadium" was to aggrandize it, like a modern-day Colosseum. It was a great marketing move, but any baseball fan should know to give Wrigley and Fenway their props for being older baseball venues, and instead celebrate Yankee Stadium for its other prestigious history.
- NovaPrime9, on 09/22/2008, -7/+11One of the oldest? Yankee Stadium was the first baseball stadium.
So sad to see it go. So much of my childhood revolved around that building. - ModX, on 09/22/2008, -11/+15I couldn't handle more than 5 minutes of the Yankee love fest on ESPN last night.
- Jsmuli2, on 09/22/2008, -1/+5you
- eddantes7, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Maybe someone hasn't told you yet.... but the Internet is everywhere... So they most likely don't need to go back to anywhere, because they're already there...
- Egg333, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4I thought it was kinda moving.
- bmovers, on 09/22/2008, -2/+6me
- jbmcb, on 09/22/2008, -9/+13I'm sorry but I don't care. I'm tired of all the introverted NYC crap. They're demolishing Tiger Stadium right now, which opened 11 years before Yankee Stadium. Not even a byline in the Times.
Unless you're from New York, or a baseball fanatic, why would you care? - RandomEyes, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4I was there. Watching Rivera throw the final pitch and seeing Jeter's speech in person was incredible
- Stomper622, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Demolished. Future site of a park. The new stadium is just across the street.
- masterkenobi, on 09/22/2008, -3/+7I'm helping to rebuild the white house in November. I'm voting Obama/Biden.
- Aurane, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4i think NYC made a huge mistake tearing that down. at least they should've thought about making it a historical monument before completely destroying it. so much of baseballs history happened at yankee stadium
- Cattywampus, on 09/22/2008, -4/+8To me the ultimate baseball blasphemy is any team playing on that ugly artificial turf.
- danesis, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4So what's going to happen to the stadium? will it be demolished or turned into a museum or something? Not a baseball fan, just curious.
- marnaq, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Prepare yourself for the C&D.

- fribhey, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3looked at the activity monitor of my browser
- masterkenobi, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3I care, so shut the ***** up.
- OfNumbers, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3Look up and there's a Star.
- swiftekho, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3I find it rather funny. Everyone goes for that last game kind of like people go to Church for only two reasons. Christmas and Easter. Yankee Stadium has never been that full (except for the golden age in the 50s) for the same reason. Everyone wants to make sure they can say they were there. Same with Church on Christmas and Easter. You are looked down upon if you didn't go.
- OhTheHumanity1, on 09/22/2008, -7/+10Who DOES that? First time I've ever seen that on dig
- chrislerch, on 09/22/2008, -6/+9My only regrets about this dump being demolished:
1. The Yank-meees didn't lose - it would have been poetic to see them knocked out of the playoffs in this game.
2. It was the sight of the greatest choke-job in history - 2004 ALCS.
Where was Roger? The admitted steroid users were in the lineup, but the greatest in a long line of overrated, cheating Yankees was noticeably absent. - Zipko, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3There seems to be an increase in it lately. Must be the YouTube crowd finding this site. Funny thing is that this is the first time I've seen it where the person actually was the first post. Usually they aren't and post it anyway for some stupid reason.
