- Myzt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Because not showing up would be business as usual, Walking out in the middle of a game after cheering like crazy for an hour makes more of a statement
- SkyJedi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Public Protest is always more of a statement then not showing up, and they then lose thousands of dollars in concessions.
Also if the game didn't sell out it wouldn't be on local TV because of black out rules - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14detroit lions fans take note
- cyclonus5150, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Angelos hijacked one of the greatest pleasures of my youth. When I first got my driver's license, Camden Yards was the very first place I went, which was a big deal to me because it's like an hour and a half north of me. I love the O's and will always be a fan but he's done everything possible to ruin the franchise. It really started going down hill the day he ran Davy Johnson out of town, just when we were really beginning to make waves...maybe a year away from being back in the Series. Then several years later he lets Mussina go. If it weren't for the legend of Cal Ripken, the team would have probably descended into the abyss even faster. Being a life-long fan of both the Orioles and the Redskins, I know too well what an owner with bad karma can do to an entire organization. Until a change is made at the top...the very tip-top, I don't hold out any hope for the future.
- HelenVr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Baltimore IS NOT the D.C. area. We dont like being lumped in with DC.
>:-( - hifidigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Angelos has destroyed the birds.
- mjpatey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ever hear of sportscaster Jon Miller? The Golden Voice of MLB, currently at ESPN, I believe... and an awesome asset to any ballclub fortunate enough to snag him. He was the O's signature voice for several years, and fans LOVED him.
Well, Angelos' son thought he didn't tow the company line enough, and recommended his dad get someone else. Next thing you know, Jon Miller is working for ESPN.
The Peter Angelos years can't be over soon enough. Go, Cal! - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Angelos sounds like a douche.
"Whoever joins that protest has no comprehension of what it costs to run a baseball team"
"[Aparicio] is a very unimportant person who has delusions of grandeur,"
He could've taken the high road but instead decided to join the fray. Sounds like a real class act. - atmclipse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hell yeah! Angelos and the rest of upper management have made too many idiotic moves and its time for a change, but it definitely won't happen anytime soon. Angelos' ego is too big to admit his mistakes and his answer to everything is not enough money so he has to raise ticket prices.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The fans aren't protesting because their team isn't winning... they're protesting because the owner of the team knows nothing about running a baseball team, and he makes rediculously stupid decisions that cause their team to lose. If the owner made good decisions and the team still lost every game, then the fans wouldn't be protesting.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Sky Jedi...
baseball black out rules are different than the football ones... football blacks out games when they don't sell out... baseball blacks out national telecasts if the local station is also carrying the same game... - zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sorry but only stupid people think that D.C. and Baltimore are the same area. While they may be close geographically, they are worlds apart in every other way. Just ask any Orioles, Ravens, Nationals, or Redskins fans, as well as anyone who actually commutes from Baltimore to DC (as I do). We may be stupid, but please don't say we live in DC.
- Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7See also: Browns, Texans, Packers, Raiders...should I go on?
- jrobelen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7no doubt about it... the orioles were the most successful franchise in baseball from 1955 to 1993, before angelos showed up. you could look it up.
- zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Plus Angelos is making more millions on his sports network MASN, which was recently picked up by Comcast, and which has displaced Game Show Network on my dial (and is costing me an extra $2/month for channel I'll never watch). Many of you outside of Baltimore may also not know that Angelos is also raking in millions from asbestos lawsuits brought against Bethlehem Steel and other plaintiffs. There's a lot of Baltimore steelworkers who benefit from that settlement, but only after Angelos' gets his substantial cut of the check. Baltimoreans don't just hate Angelos cuz he can't run a baseball team, we hate him on so many other levels as well.
- Myzt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5this comment is buried for inaccuracy. This was one of the worst comments i've ever seen. It doesnt depend on profit sharing at all, in fact it hardly has any sharing. And the part of about no financial stake in the team. These people ARE the financial stake in this team. Theyre the ones buying tickets, buying merchandise, and buying concessions. Believe it or not "bmatherlyjr", The fans ARE baseball. No fans? No League. And before you say that there were only a few thousand people, take into account this game was in the middle of a weekday when people have to work, not to mention that it was promoted by a small radio station that doesnt reach everyone so not everyone knew about it. That stadium used to be sold out every single game. Now they have to lie in the "Guess the Attendance" game.
- ssvalenteno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6First off their was a lot more then 1,000 people, I was their!
It wasn't to hurt anyone, it was to make sure everyone (including the meddlesome Peter Angelos) is aware that we as lifelong fans of our baseball team are in utter disgust of how he personally has ruined a franchise with a rich tradition of at least competing and sometimes winning.
Peter Angelos knows nothing about running a baseball team!
And Peter Angelos is a sickening lush, I know this from first hand knowledge
Every chance he gets he pushes my baseball team further down the hole in which no baseball team, player, journalist or fan has any respect for
For the last 10+ years I have devoted to not give that lawyer, Peter Angelos a dime of my money or a ounce of my time because he has ruined one of my true loves that always took my mind off the daily grind.
PERIOD. - trutwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe if Wrigley didn't sell out every game ownership would actually do something about the poor Cubbies...
- repairman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cal Ripken has kicked around the idea of buying the club if Angelos ever sold. Here is the link to an article about it:
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-te.sp.ripkenside06sep06,0,4124553.story?coll=bal-sports-baseball
"A deal Angelos struck with Major League Baseball over the Nationals' arrival in Washington guarantees the owner at least $365 million if he chooses to sell." - hurfydurfur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And he's out of his mind. Seriously, I think he should be medically examined for a mental disorder. He took out a full page ad in the Post and went on a rant about how the O's have full rights to the DC area media, etc, etc. He said once "there are no real baseball fans in DC". It's a full out war to him, maybe because he used to be a lawyer.
See, he opposed the Nationals coming in from the start. But DC was the largest market without a baseball team (if you don't count the Maryland region). So of course they were going to come here. And of course that's going to cut into his revenue. But come on, some people went to the O's game because it's just baseball (once Ripken retired). - JackyTreehorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cubs fan huh? Bet you like basketball too. Have the Bulls had any championship runs between, oh I don't know, 1964 and now? What about those White Sox? Tell me more about your city's dismal sports past.

- myxyplik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I stopped following the Orioles after the great Albert Belle experiment.:P
- dabneyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If Peter Angelos told me he would sell the O's if I stood on top of the Warehouse for 1 year, I would do it. Anything to get him out of there.
- aftk2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw that too - nice public relations.
- axxiom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Free Millen!
- schwit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Being in the AL East is murder. Baseball has lost serious credibility when the Yankees have a payroll of $194m and the next closest team is the Bosox at $120m and the Marlins are at $16m. Baseball would be better if they instituted a salary cap like football to ensure parity.
Angelos is a pain but imagine having to compete when the opposition has 2.5 times the resources you have. - theologyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And you can see him rant again right in this article. At least Mike Flanagan showed some understanding for these fans - look at the end of the article.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do you seriously think that a team with 150 million as their payroll has the same advantage as a team with 75 million? It really disgusts me when people think that.. especially being from Cleveland where we have our good players sold off every year to the Yankees or Red Soxs because we don't have the money to pay for their inflating salaries.
There should be a salary cap - JackyTreehorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm a Browns fan. I'm taking note.
I've never seen an NFL team managed so poorly, coached so poorly, destroyed so predictably ...
I think the Browns will do _worse_ than their 6-10 season last year. Last year I didn't think that was possible. Not with all the talk about how much talent we have and how good our Patriots-bred coach is. Still, 6 wins is more than they had in their first _two_ years combined. How about a "Free the Dawgs" protest? - Ubish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Disagree, the white sox last year, and the Tigers this year are an example of teams that have not been at the top in quite some time that are now at that level.
- goorioles747, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look at my name, I am a true orioles fan and although I live in the DC area, I have never been drawn to the nationals. But, loving a team owned by Angelos, who is amone the worst owners I can think of makes it very hard.
@ repairman, if Cal Ripken bought the club, not only do I have confidence that he would be a better owner, but fans would come back soley for having such an amazing man as owner, and players would love to play for him, I know it would be an honor for me.
To Peter Angelos: Stop only thinking about your own fat wallet and sell the club to a man like Cal who has the ability to lead this club back the the glory days. - catfud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Imagine being a Cubs fan
We havn't won a world series in almost 100 years
besides the fact that the cubs have the worst record in the national league and there payroll is one of the highest in MLB
the marlins play a bunch of rookies expecting to have a terrible year but they are still in the wild card hunt and have been flurting with a .500 record - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but the national media attention to it won't have an effect?
- HoldenMyOwn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hiring Leo Mazzone was a smart move, but other than that... meh.
- md4gore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fans haven't been showing up for years.
Now national attention has been drawn to this.
Which idea actually worked? - hurfydurfur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The only message this sends out to the rest of the nation is that the stupidest people in the world truly do live in the D.C. area."
If you're talking about stupid politicians, fine. Else, you're off-base. DC is referred to as "silicon valley east" and has some very good surrounding counties in terms of crime rate, education and culture. There are some bad parts, but overall the Metro region is on the top of many "smart" charts. - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ misanthrope- atlanta hawks and the new york knickerbockers, just to show some nba love
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was so pissed when it took over the game show network... I watched it all the time.
- zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GSN is now on channel #179, but old remote control habits are hard to break! (and I guess you have to have digital cable to get that channel number -- Thanks comcast!
- imnsi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's ironic they walked out while losing to the Detroit Tigers, the team that had 119 losses a few years prior. Didn't the Tigers just clinch the playoffs?
- mustbepatient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You make a lot of sense. The Arizona Cardinals suffer from the same problem - incompetence and underperformance starts at the top and trickles down.
- Nooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know nothing NOTHING about lawyer Angelos. He's made enough money in his asbestos lawsuits - he bought the team as an ego thing and to give his unemployable sons jobs. Camden Yard is one of the best places in North America to watch a sporting event (and it's within walking distance of Edgar Allen Poe's grave). Baltimore is a great sports town and the people there deserve better - but you have to realize Chief Wiggum would be better. Angelos has turned a gem of a team into a rotten turnip and everything he does smells like a Rich Garces fart in a sauna. The sports world will be better as soon as he crawls back into his personal septic tank and lets someone smart take over a once proud franchise.
- howski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's nothing wrong w/ fans wanting their team to win, staying loyal to the team even when they don't, and expressing their discontent for the management of that team in the form of a civil, organized protest. Even though it was poorly timed and will surely yield negligible results, I wish I - a FOREVER O's fan - could have been there. I don't think that makes me shallow.
Fortunately, the protest is having the most important effect its organizers could have hoped for: it is making national news, and causing Angelos a little embarrassment. He HATES getting negative press, as evidenced by his backed-into-a-corner, name-calling reaction. I am loving every minute of it.
I'm sure there are myriad Yankees fans that will say they stuck by the team through thick and thin, win or lose, but lucky for them it's impossible to know which ones actually sat in that EMPTY Yankee stadium in the late 80's/early 90's. I despise Angelos's ownership, but I am a season ticket holder and have been for 3 seasons. It's a fun activity that I enjoy with my family. I love baseball and the O's and it would take a LOT for that to change.
@schwit: Right on. I'd digg it twice if I could. - wspence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait for Angelos to leave. Right now this is the beginning. The clock is ticking.
- Ubish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey now, the tigers have had some bad years, but have been doing pretty damn good in attendence this year.
- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No one has a reason to complain. I'm a Pirates fan and we've been losing for 14 years!
- isolino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The payroll isn't that important my Oakland A's have been winning with a payroll that is very low compared to teams like the Yankees and Red Socks. If fact their payroll this year is about 62 million while the Yankees and Red Socks are almost double. Were going to the playoffs and the Red Socks are not.
- EnterpriseD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The O's ended up winning that Detroit game. I will give just one thing to Angelos: it was not fair to the players to walk out in the middle of the game. And to hurfydurfur--you say: DC is referred to as "silicon valley east" and has some very good surrounding counties in terms of crime rate, education and culture. First of all, what does any of that have to do with baseball, and second:
Do you even live in the area? Ever heard of Prince Georges county? It has one of the highest crime rates in the country, along w/ DC itself--there were several attacks on tourists right next to our treasured national monuments this summer (2006). And don't get me started on Baltimore. My brother is a Baltimore City cop. You wouldn't want to get lost beyond the tourist area--the only two nice blocks of the city. The Salvadorean gang MS-13 has a foothold in every county surrounding DC in both MD and VA. The schools are among the worst performing in the country, even in Montgomery County, one of the richest counties in the country, where now 1 in 5 kids drop out of high school.
Dan Snyder (Redskins) and Peter Angelos (Orioles) are peas in a pod. All they care about is money. Both teams have well-attended games, so why should they change anything? And Angelos LOVES seeing the O's lose to the Yanks. You can count of them to be sell-out games. He not only fought the arrival of the Nationals, but once here, he deprived the Nationals' fans of the ability to watch their team on TV--kept saying things weren't "fair" for him. Angelos is no fan or friend of baseball. Only money.
And just fyi, Angelos is STILL a disgusting tort-parasite lawyer. I go to the law school he went to, and even the administration is embarassed to say he went there. I haven't met a single person who has anything good to say about him, and wouldn't want to meet the type of person who does. - z3cka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quoth the raven, nevermore.
