the pirates are worth a can of diet dr. pepper, a box of nails, and 3 rentals at blockbuster - drastik21, on 04/17/2008, -4/+21LoL, A-Rod makes more money than everyone in the Florida Marlins combined.
- snakeeyes27, on 04/17/2008, -2/+14Cowboys are worth 1.5 billion

- Chirp08, on 04/17/2008, -1/+9who the ***** dugg this guy down? why would you bury a fact, he didn't even put an opinion, just flat out gave a number. what the ***** is wrong with some of you.
- form3hide, on 04/17/2008, -2/+9It's a business. They're a successful business.
- mewplustwo, on 04/17/2008, -2/+9There are a few reasons why the Yankees are worth so much and why Arod makes more than the Marlins - educate yourself instead of saying stupid stuff.
1. Yankee Brand recognition is the #1 franchise in the world. China, Japan, Russia, Mexico all know what the Yankees are. The Marlins? What is that, dinner for tonight?
2. Arod makes more because the Yankees make more. If the Yankees didn't rake in the dough, neither would Arod (he would but probably on another team). Don't blame him for hoping on the money train on a team that he actually fits quite nicely on.
3. What other sports team has their own television station? YES (yankees entertainment and sports network), hosts exclusive Yankee content not found anywhere else.
4. There are Yankee fans all over the US and the World. Florida, California, New Jersey, Texas, China, Japan and (gulp) Massachusetts ALL have hardcore Yankee fans.
5. The Yankees are one of the most diverse ball-clubs spanning multi-ethnic cultures and can advertise to almost any culture.
Steinbrenner has put together a solid business structure and is the reason why the Yankees are WORTH 1.3 billion. That and besides the fact that they have more World Championships (26) than any other sports team - ever. - davdev, on 04/17/2008, -1/+8I agree with most of your points, however, I believe Manchester United is the #1 franchise in the world and the Red Sox also own their own TV station (NESN), though the Bruins are also part owners.
- TomK88, on 04/17/2008, -1/+7Right, because the Yankees building a new stadium doesn't benefit the city of New York at all or its inhabitants. Stop being so short-sighted.
- kthoma22, on 04/17/2008, -2/+8The Red Sox have NESN which in many ways is better than YES.
YES is yankees games and shows, Nets Games, and Mike and the Mad Dog radio show for 3 hours. It's really lame.
NESN has Red Sox, Bruins, and great college hockey games (Hockey East game of week, Hockey East Finals, and Beanpot go NU).
The Red Sox also have fans all over the US as well. If you ever watch any Red Sox road game there is always a good showing from Red Sox nation. Hell in Baltimore there are usually more Red Sox fans at the games than Orioles fans.
The reason the Yankees are so big is they play in the largest commercial market by far in the United States. Being in such a large market has allowed them to take advantage of it and get their name and brand out more than any other team in MLB. - drastik21, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4go back to the kitchen!
- d3dm, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4The Cowboys are also constructing a new $1B+ stadium with a double retractable roof (gotta let God watch his team play).
- Ruger11mcrdpi, on 04/17/2008, -7/+10We should probably sell them to china to help offset the National Debt.
- squeevey, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3LOL, That is a great joke!
- dan222555, on 04/17/2008, -3/+5It's the middle of April you idiot. And the teams the Marlins have played do not even come close to being as good as the teams the Yankees have played.
- cyrix, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2Master of Business Administration?
- gcsmit6, on 04/17/2008, -4/+6That is awesome. I bet it didn't take 6 years to come to that either. You just have to meet one of those *****

- chrisfu, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3$1.45 billion US according to Forbes, which is around £786 million in sterling.
- TomK88, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3Huh?
- chrisj33, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3This is the "wtf" comment of the day
- WhoDoneIt, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2You already said that up top. Thanks for reminding us.
- form3hide, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3Monopoly?
Far from it. Yankees management decides to spend. Look at TB, those owners are deciding NOT TO SPEND and are pocketing the revenue.
Are Yankees overspenders? Yeah, sure. But it's a business. Baseball is a business. Sure, winning is great. But all winning means is more money. When it comes down to it, it's all about money. - keithmcbride, on 04/17/2008, -3/+5wake up, it's 2008 now
- deldigger, on 04/17/2008, -2/+4From what i understand the Yanks are the number one franchise in sports.Wait until you see the new stadium.
Ger - AlKo, on 04/17/2008, -1/+2The Yankee brand is helped out a lot in Asia by both Matsui and Wang. Daisuke and Ichiro both help their respective teams with the overseas Japanese demographic as well, but us Taiwanese people love baseball too. And Wang is THE Taiwanese player in the bigs to root for.
Football (Soccer) is pretty popular in East Asia but I don't think it stands up to baseball. - MasterSpy, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Giant Baseball Market + Popular Team + National Draw (& International Draw) + New York prices of living being much higher then most of the countries average living rate ($$$ money wise) = $1.3 Billion
BTW:
baseball finance does not work in the same way business finance does. Baseball teams sometimes lose 10 million a year, but they are funded by multimillionaires (on the high end near a billion) and they can afford to lose that kind of money for fun and the potential of making all that money back when they sell the team anywhere from ten to fifty years in which they bought the team. - TomK88, on 04/17/2008, -1/+2Do you actually think it would matter if the Yankees had all the worst players? They would still be worth about the same. Look at the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL. They sell out every game (something like 90% from season's tickets) yet they haven't made the playoffs in a few years and haven't won a Cup in over 50.
- chanop, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1I could be wrong, but I remember hearing there are going to be less seating in the new stadium
- TomK88, on 04/17/2008, -3/+4No. The Cowboys are worth ~1.5 billion.
- sagat, on 04/17/2008, -15/+16Not a baseball fan but living in New York for 6 years has thought me one thing. Yankees fans are ***** but Mets fans are alright.
- davdev, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1You need to check your crappy pay. I work at Fenway in the Summer and many of the vendors make several hundred dollars a game in commission and tips. It isn't enough for a full time gig, but then again the only work a few hours a day 82 days a year.
I make about $100 a game, and work about 4 hours. 25 dollars/hour is not bad for a part time job.
Also, how much money do you think the City/State gets in taxes on tickets and food served/ merch sold, plus the income and cap gains taxes on the players and the team itself. - serend, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Less could mean a mere 1000 seats I heard that too but it was a small number and if they change ticket prices it's just a excuse and not the real reason.
- MasterSpy, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1I agree 100%
- drastik21, on 04/17/2008, -2/+3You MUST be a women
- reuscel, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Trust me, it would have been a lot worse at Fenway.
- fatTJ, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1I Learned the Warning Signs after the First Time.
- Coffeedemon, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1"haven't won a Cup in over 50."
Whoa. Its 41 ... thats not good but come on now. - cyrix, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE.
- argaen21, on 04/17/2008, -2/+3More than that.
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -6/+7How much is Manchester United worth?
- jackalsclaw, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1most of the public money is going towards adding parking, the new stadium is being build with Yankee money (it is on city land, that had been used as parking during yankee games, thought). public money is also being spent on train stations .
- TomK88, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1-Creates temporary jobs during construction
-Creates permanent jobs once operational
-Provides a valuable service that attracts people to New York
-Increased tax/revenue from Yankees organization
etc. etc. etc. - jackalsclaw, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1people visit the city to see Yankee games. also that public money is mostly being spent to build parking and a new train station
- PapaZit, on 04/17/2008, -1/+2How does a baseball stadium benefit the city of New York? The area that was used for the new stadium were parks. Parks for children to play, which were grossly underfunded. There are 80-90 home games per year. For 80 days out of the year, there will be a few thousand part-time jobs created with crappy pay and no benefits. How does giving 600-800 million tax free dollars for a stadium that has 80 or so games a year make any sense? That money could instead go to services and work the city needs, or even cut taxes. The Yankees worth 1.3 billion, yet they need subsidies in the hundreds of millions.
Read David Cay Johnston's Free Lunch. - SteaminTmann, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Yea, like the $125 Yankees/Red Sox ticket I bought for tonight....
- MRintheKeys, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200!
- gcsmit6, on 04/17/2008, -2/+3Overpaid Roid-head losers
- TomK88, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1I think most major sports teams have their own television stations. I know the Toronto Maple Leafs (LeafsTV) and the Toronto Raptors (RaptorsTV) do.
- whoomp123, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0salary caps only put more money in the owners pockets rather than the players (who are the ones actually providing the entertainment we pay for)
