- thegamingguy, on 11/19/2008, -0/+9Carlos Quentin of the White Sox probably would have won it if he hadn't been hurt for the last part of the season. No slam dunk really, the two Twins Mauer and Morneau were probably good choices as well.
- BentCorner, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6If there was ever a year the AL could have just gone without an MVP, this was it.
- DrVic, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Just because it would be "cool" does not mean anyone on that team deserves to be MVP.
- davewashere, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4I'm a Red Sox fan, but I've got to admit that Mauer deserved the award. He also deserved it a few years ago, when he placed 6th in the voting (I think A-Rod won that year). I'm not sure why Mauer gets so little love in the MVP voting. His hitting stats are right there with everyone else, and he's a frickin' catcher! Having a guy who is one of the best defensive catchers in the game and also one of the best hitters is way more valuable to the team. The only justification that could be made for not selecting Mauer is if you argued that he doesn't call a good game. I don't know if he does or doesn't, I'm just saying that's really the only thing that isn't obvious that could possibly be a reason for not voting him MVP.
- feshmania, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3And so do the sports writers...because its their job.
- shakabrah, on 11/21/2008, -2/+4In the ESPN poll, Neyer actually voted for Joe Mauer who put up similar offensive numbers as Pedroia at a much more difficult position. Neyer is right. Mauer *was* more valuable.
- hoisonsauce, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2It's his power numbers.
- shakabrah, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3The problem with the "day in and day out" argument is that only Red Rox fans watch Pedroia every day, and similarly don't see what Mauer or Morneau do day in and day out. Very few people watch enough baseball to be able to make decisions comparing multiple players on multiple teams based only on what they see, and that is why statistics are so valuable in baseball.
- DephexTwin, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1If it is all about numbers, then why even have people vote?
- DteK, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1I think Jason Bay had as much if not more of an impact as well. He seemed to fire up the time after dealing with Manny's shennanigans

Hamilton was robbed. - feshmania, on 11/21/2008, -3/+2Pedroia was teh best choice. There's a comment on that page that says Pedroia needs to be watched day in and day out to fully appreciate. Yes, his numbers may not have been astounding, but the guy played better than anyone I watched all year. He's a GREAT fielder (as is Youk) and he hit great.
I didn't see a number referenced once in that article which makes it too easy to take with a grain of salt. - limbikity, on 11/21/2008, -2/+1funny, but def not NSFW:

http://www.townienews.com/site/archive/lil-dustys- ... - tkocf821, on 11/21/2008, -5/+4Pedroia wasn't even the best player on his own team, Kevin Youkilis was better statisically, but he's not a really short, slightly above average 2B.
- awtripp, on 11/21/2008, -4/+2What a whiny bitch this guy is. He should go back to making out with his Chase Utley posters.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -5/+3shut up boston
- jax0047, on 11/21/2008, -3/+1Kind of a weak year for the AL MVP in general. Where's the guy with 53 HRs, 125 RBI's and .318 avg? Pedroia deserved it and won it, now STFU.
- elcoqui121, on 11/21/2008, -7/+1Tehy should have given it to someone on Tampa Bay, I know how these voters vote but it would have been cool if a Tampa player got the award.
