- nerddtvg, on 09/11/2008, -1/+51Last I recalled, baseball came from Rounders, a popular game in Ireland and then England. It would stand to reason that it is possible baseball came from across the pond.
- wonderchemist, on 09/13/2008, -0/+49So Competitive Eating is all we have left?
- mbradbury, on 09/13/2008, -1/+29That would be arse patting
- dondara, on 09/13/2008, -5/+31Just like baseball
- AirRaven, on 09/13/2008, -4/+28A popular *girls'* game, I hasten to point out.
- JacobParker, on 09/13/2008, -9/+32Go England!
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -14/+34True, they love to say they invented a lot of things like democracy (Greeks invented it several thousand years BC), while the America doesn't even practice it. (College system is NOT democracy, sorry ladies)
Many also say America invented the automobile ( Wrong, Karl Benz, German), TV (Wrong, John Logie Baird, Scotsman), The Web (Wrong, Tim Berners-Lee, British), The iPod (Wrong, http://gizmodo.com/5046463/apple-admits-british-ma ... ). They did however invent fast food. - hellahyphy, on 09/12/2008, -13/+32I wouldn't doubt it. America claims they invented stuff first all the time. Honestly Does it really matter?
- eeemart, on 09/13/2008, -4/+22oh no! next thing you're gonna tell me is that basketball was invented by a Canadian!
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -2/+20You sad deluded fool. Have you seen how obese the average merkin is?
- boneit, on 09/13/2008, -0/+18Pizza from Italy, burger from Germany, fries from Ribbitland based on the chip from England. The US probably invented the drive-through, wouldn't want to get out of the car when going to the bank, pharmacy, liquor store etc.
- royalboyle, on 09/13/2008, -2/+17Invented by a Candian in America so I guess that's a push.
- pukiman, on 09/13/2008, -2/+17Isn't that the case with American Handball (American "Football") too? Rugby was brought by the English to the Americans - Americans dressed the players in heavy armor to not get injured, re-named the sport and called it their own.
Nothing new here. - chowdhary, on 09/13/2008, -0/+13why'd it suck? who cares where it came from.
everything has an origin. learn to live with it. - Disjunto, on 09/13/2008, -0/+13and a rest every few seconds
- boneill, on 09/13/2008, -3/+16Yeah, we're sorry about cricket.
- megaton, on 09/13/2008, -6/+18@alanr19: while I get what you're saying, your comment is rife with inaccuracy.
1) America is a Democratic Republic, which we don't claim to have invented, and fits snugly with the Electoral College system we use. America did, however, popularize it.
2) American's didn't invent the automobile--they invented the assembly line, making automobiles affordable enough to own, thus popularizing the automobile.
3) John Logie Baird didn't invent the television, either. He was one of dozens of people who had a hand in inventing the TV. If anyone, Paul Gottlieb Nipkow invented the first TV in 1884. But, again, it was an American, Herbert E. Ives, who was the first to create and demonstrate the first long-distance television broadcast and reception, which ultimately led to the popularization of television.
4) Nobody claims America invented the Web, but we invented the Internet on which the Web lives. Because of this infrastructure, the Web was popularized by American invention.
5) America did, in fact, invent the iPod. Ok, ok, you meant personal, digital media player. Pedantics aside, once more, America was the first to popularize the MP3 player.
So, it seems we don't invent many things. But we do fancy taking inventions, making them affordable, and popularizing them. What good is a Galactic Hypergate Wormhole Generator if nobody can afford one?
But since we're on the topic of actual-invention, here is a list of American inventions:

and bubble gum - Peck3277, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12They probably would take quite a beating, but if NFL players took off their pads and came playing rugby "they would be literally killed" too. Don't even bother trying to compare the 2 sports, the only similarities between the two are the shape of the ball and tackling. The rules for tackling are very different aswell.
"football takes a massive amount of technique and strategy" and rugby doesn't? Have you ever played? Watched a game? In rugby they do don't have hours to plan every little play.
Please don't comment on things that you have no idea of? And seeing a video on youtube doesn't mean your an expert on the subject. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -16/+28The only part of baseball that came from England was the ass patting.
- phirestyle, on 09/13/2008, -2/+14Confucius say that baseball very funny game; man can walk on 4 balls.
- enormousdave, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12Sorry to break it to you, but apple pie is also of European origins
http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodpies.html#applepie - Rudegar, on 09/13/2008, -2/+13rename it to FREEDOMball FTW! :)
- BlackWarp, on 09/13/2008, -0/+11That's Rugby with helmets and steroids.
- FapCommander, on 09/13/2008, -1/+12In England, we don't call anything 'soccer'
- britblogger, on 09/13/2008, -3/+14what makes me laugh even more is the *World* Series - which is played by US-only teams.
oxymorons. - bagelmaster, on 09/13/2008, -0/+10Just imagine how Americans would feel if we discovered that our cherished language came from England too! And that English also borrows a lot from French! The horror!
- adriantr, on 09/13/2008, -2/+12Which was OK when it was in England because they were all hot girls playing it!
- RawkusVoid, on 09/13/2008, -1/+11The British invented America
- covertbadger, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9Congrats wukillabee, your contribution to this thread has been an absolute tour de force of sports ignorance. You've a lot to be proud of.
- Tripper44, on 09/13/2008, -3/+11Don't u fools get it yet "Everything good comes from England" TV, Binary code, Fish & Chips! and now americas biggest sport to add to the list, we brits are just tooo dam brainy!
hehe - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+12Well thanks a lot England for giving us the world's most boring sporting event...
- grawpy, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Who cares if baseball originally came from England? Guess what, so did Americans.
- covertbadger, on 09/13/2008, -1/+9And two entirely separate teams per side, because it would be too much to ask to have one set of players attack AND defend...
- shepp, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7no one says soccer. Football - hence kicking the ball with your foot.
- Pandalemon, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7@megatonmegaton
Samuel Colt did not invent the first revolver, just the first reliable one. - giveer, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7You show up at parties drunk and piss in the crack in the couch, don't you? man, I hate that guy.
- Couchy, on 09/13/2008, -3/+10@bps04a : Thats alot of words for an argument containing nothing. Did America claim to invent the color purple? or the question mark? No. But it does claim to have invented baseball and cars etc etc etc. which is what he is arguing.
- ChayD, on 09/13/2008, -1/+8America did invent "England" which is some place across the Atlantic which resembles an enormous heavily surveiled city (no countryside, mountains, lakes or coast), and where time appears to be stuck somewhere between the 1800s and the 1950s. Business people wear bowler hats and where the population either speak like a Cockney fishwife or an effeminate toff and have "bad teeth". Naturally, of course, this bears no resemblance to the country of the same name.
- robdiggity, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6Cup adjusting? All American.
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/13/2008, -2/+8I don't know why he is getting dugg down because it's true. Another example is that the light bulb itself was not invented by Edison:
"Henry Woodward of Toronto, who along with Matthew Evans patented a light bulb in 1875. Unfortunately, the two entrepreneurs could not raise the financing to commercialize their invention. The enterprising American Thomas Edison, who had been working on the same idea, bought the rights to their patent. Capital was not a problem for Edison: he had the backing of a syndicate of industrial interests with $50,000 to invest - a sizable sum at the time. Using lower current, a small carbonized filament, and an improved vacuum inside the globe, Edison successfully demonstrated the light bulb in 1879 and, as they say, the rest is history." - Ramble, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7Of course it did, we've been playing Rounders for ages.
- Kakemonstere, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7And why do you call it football? The feets are barely used except running!
- neilhicks, on 09/13/2008, -1/+6In all honesty, does it really matter where it came from? As long as we enjoy it, let's play it. No sense in getting caught up on trivial things such as the origin of a sport. It exists. We like it. The End.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -2/+7Why the hell don't you stop eating too much?
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -2/+7@couchy
Who is America? All of it's citizens?
Or just your biased opinion that 100% of us all believe 1 thing.
and @ wukillabee
California may be great, but you forget that california has to carry ***** on its back - JoeWebber, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5I''m from England and couldn't care less. Woo we invented baseball (maybe) who gives a crap. I don't see why anyone should be disappointed. China invents things we use everyday I don't cry when I use a fork.
- Lephisto, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5Wrong way its just soccer to the US because the name football is already in use.
