- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+18Now please get us some guys that won't choke in the playoffs next season.
- Blinker1315, on 10/20/2008, -0/+7Manny and Lou Piniella? Yikes. Take it from a Bosox fan, you don't want that.
- TheMarenum, on 10/20/2008, -2/+9If anyone can do it, it's Hendry.
- Fleagleman, on 10/20/2008, -1/+5That's good that he's not going anywhere anytime soon. That's one trait that he shares with the Cubs organization.
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 10/20/2008, -1/+5As well he should keep his job. He constructed a balanced team before the season started, moved pieces into position with key trades that let them maintain the best record in the NL going into the post-season, and has maintained a young core of strong players who will be productive and competitive for many season. Though he did this at great cost of payroll, the Hendry deserves his job for even getting the North side into the playoffs.
Also, I share your pain from being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. - inactive, on 10/20/2008, -2/+5Like Manny? We could only wish...no way in hell it happens
- Quick2822, on 10/20/2008, -3/+6As someone who lives in Chicago, and is a Cubs fan, it's funny to see the numerous Cubs stories make the front page of Digg.
In a way, we are sharing a bit of our pain with everyone. Sucks, doesn't it? - b4uplayball, on 10/20/2008, -1/+4It seems that the Cubs best news is always in the off season!!
- diggtochina, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Da Bears!
- ronaldinho, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1Uh......really? Derrek Lee actually was the only batter who actually hit against the Dodgers. More than anything else, this team should stay together (Soriano aside) because getting into the playoffs ain't easy either. Cubbies got a good team; they just need another star to get them to the top. Fukudome should get better in his second season (like Dice-K did). The infield is still excellent. Soto is a franchise catcher. I wouldn't rip apart this team to start over. And the pitching wasn't a complete disaster. It was just so burdened by the lack of offense.
And besides.....I know I wouldn't trade Manny for Soriano. Soriano is not worth his contract. - ronaldinho, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2Then again, why not? Manny is still Manny, and he's still much much better than Soriano. If Hendry signs Manny and finds a way to get rid of Soriano (who's only a regular-season star as far as I'm concerned), it's a viable upgrade. Now as to finding someone to take Soriano's contract and his ill-fated-for-playoff-game swing......
- Tegurit34, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1200 strikeouts aren't so bad if it's coupled with a 120 walks. Seriously, learn the value of a non-out people.
That said, the Dunn contract is going to be a foolish one, whatever team gives it to him. Not because of the strikeouts -- his combined offense is fine. It's because just like Manny, this guy needs to DH. Literally half the runs he produces with the bat are going to be given right back if you give the man a glove; he's not a Major League run preventer. Why not pay a guy $7 million who will stop the balls hit to him and give you a league average bat? The net runs scored/prevented are the same.
Furthermore, Adam Dunn is in the family of players that don't age well. This guy is going to get a 5+ year contract and the top 10 players he most resembles according to Baseball Reference (http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/sp.cgi?I=du ... reflect that. Most of these guys became below average players by age 31, if not out of baseball entirely.
$100 million contracts to DHs are a really bad idea. Resources can be much, much better spent than that. - Tegurit34, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1He's not the worst, but they could have done better. He deserved an extension, but 4 years?? That's a lot of time for ***** to go wrong and to be stuck with someone that won't do a satisfactory job.
- dballi, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2***** Soriano. Trade him for Brian Roberts. Move DeRo to right field. threaten to send Fukudome to triple-A and see if he can respond.
the lone bright spot these last few weeks for me has been Kyle Orton and his neckbeard. - Tegurit34, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1Ronald, Manny is not a better player than Soriano. He's a better hitter, but Soriano is a good defensive left fielder and Manny is an absolute hole out there, and believe it or not, that hole makes up the difference in batting runs.
No matter what the position, defense matters. You can afford a below average glove here or there if their bats are real good, but Manny is far and away beyond that. He's wretched. He's a 3 to 4 win (above average) hitter, but he's one of only five -2 win fielders.
$20 million a year isn't worth 2 wins. Any National League team that gives Manny a contract is foolish. He needs to DH.
Look at the Rays if you need evidence that defense matters. They scored as many runs as they did last year, they upgraded their pitching by a few wins with a good bullpen and Matt Garza, but that's not good for 31 wins. But in 2008, they ran away with the title of best defensive team by turning 71.0% of balls in play into outs -- in 2007 they weren't just the worst in the Majors, they were the worst in recent memory at 65.6. Now 6.6% doesn't seem like a very big number, but it translated into the Rays allowing 273 runs less than they did in 2007. Two hundred seventy three! That's like adding Albert Pujols and Hanley Ramirez to your team.
As far as Soriano, even at just 450 ABs this year he was a better player than Manny. Maybe he wasn't as flashy with a 1.000 OPS bat, but he wasn't the glove on a broom in the outfield that Manny is either. He's 5 times better at preventing runs. - kidathinnes, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2hahahahahahahaha Adam Dunn.
Good luck with that pos. - allothersnsused, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1My roommate is a Cubs fan and he wont shut up about how great they are all year, and never fails to notify us that they have the best record in baseball. Now whenever he sees us watching the playoffs, he turns right back around and heads for his room and will fully admit its too painful to watch. Its a bit satisfying after months on end of constant Cubs talk, but something inside me cant help but root for them next year.
- pyrexia, on 10/20/2008, -2/+2Ouch.
- jpounder, on 10/21/2008, -0/+0Adam Dunn?......why do I keep seeing cub fans (not intelligent ones) screaming to get this guy? Yes, he might hit 40 homers, but why on earth would we want another guy who strikes out 200 times a season? We already have one of those....Soriano! Soriano is really the only major change that needs to be made here...the nucleus of the club is good. Good players with good attitudes...no prima donnas like Manny. Deal Soriano for whatever you can get for him....I don't care if it's three popcorn vendors
- Boagrius, on 10/20/2008, -4/+3Typical Cubs fan, dosent even know the score of the game while at the game! HA
- waxcrash, on 10/20/2008, -4/+3You know what is more pathetic than the Cubs losing in the post season? A Sox fan trolling on Digg. Your troll is weak.
- haroonie, on 10/20/2008, -4/+3Soriano to LA for Manny. DP Derrick Lee to somewhere in Cali for some pitching. Acquire Adam Dunn for 1B. Brian Roberts at 2B, Fukudome in AAA and DeRosa in RF. Chicks digg the long ball.
Yup. That's why i'm not GM. - Brandoskey, on 10/20/2008, -4/+2typical whitesox fan, all pissed off that no one even knows who the whitesox are outside of chicago
- Boagrius, on 10/20/2008, -6/+4The only thing that "Sucks, dosen't it?" is the Cubs fans themselves sucking!
- Vesuvias, on 10/20/2008, -3/+0Was I the only one that read this as "Cubs GM Jim Hendrix signs 4-year contract extension"... I would be SURE the Cubbies would win with Hendrix. lol
- kidathinnes, on 10/20/2008, -5/+2Hooray 4 more years of heartbreak for Hendry!
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -9/+5He's doing a great job if you like getting close and then failing miserably. The Cubs are the dry-humping teenagers of the NL...
www.digitalfuntown.com - Boagrius, on 10/20/2008, -12/+7Who cares, the Cubs suck anyway, go ahead, try to buy yourself a World Series again, you SUCK! Go WHITESOX!
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -14/+8***** the cubs.
