***** you - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33He actually talked to the Nytimes about this airplane a few weeks ago. It's a Cirrus Design SR22 with built-in parachute:
“The whole plane has a parachute on it,” Lidle said. “Ninety-nine percent of pilots that go up never have engine failure, and the 1 percent that do usually land it. But if you’re up in the air and something goes wrong, you pull that parachute, and the whole plane goes down slowly.”

Most of us, despite our favorite teams, are Americans. My best to all related and affected.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32I think I have more sympathy for the people who were inside the apartment at that time rather than baseball.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Have some class. The man is dead and so are at least three others. My sympathies to the families involved, and to the Yankees.
This is no time for rude comments. - Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19CNN (television broadcast) is saying that it was probably just Corey Lidle flying alone. Some reports suggest that his flight instructor may have been on board as well.
Apparently Lidle has had his flying license for a little under a year and it was a terrible day for flying (low cloud level, etc.) - chrishahn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19ESPN.com confirms his death -

Amazing...just amazing... - briantech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Dude, this isn't just "any event". A freaking plane crashed into a building in new york city. Thats about as similar to 9/11 as you can get without building the WTC's back up and doing it over.
- LLXerxes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Poor guy.
He loved to fly. He was about to go visit his family. How unfortunate. - atomic16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Please just leave it, I apologized, I would delete the comment if I could. Are you perfect, never done something you look back on and wish you ad not done it?
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13shirini,
So not only do you make the death of Lidle a joke, you then go on and say too bad it wasn't Torre... how is it possible for you to be that huge of an ***** twice in one breath? - Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Who cares when you posted it? Last i checked there was no prize for having the most front page stories. Digg is about posting stories, articles and other interesting information. Who cares who posted it first as long as it's posted?

- tjordan90, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10For gods sake people, he didn't crash into the building on purpose. The initial commenter never said that the people in the building didn't matter -- their loss is of course sad.
The point is:
It is a tragic day for people living in the building and their families. Its a tragic day for the family of Cory Lidle. Its a tragic day for the New York Yankees. Its a tragic day for major league baseball.
The day we start using comparative language like "more tragic for ...." is a tragic day for us all. - SeaBass22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just heard on the radio that his parents are aboard a separate plane and probably aren't aware of the crash yet...so sad
- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The disdain at any gallows humour for this topic but the barrage of tasteless gags at the expense of a multitude of other similiar or larger events *not directly affecting you* has my eyes rolling like a Richard Hammond in a jet powered car.
- Zidd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7this is a little private jet not some gigantic 747
- eatasandwich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"I think I have more sympathy for the people who were inside the apartment at that time rather than baseball."
Actually, I feel more sympathy for the families of the people who died rather than the people who were living in the apartment. I think it's pretty likely this was an accident. I'd rather lose my stuff than a family member. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4@JoeNick
Some people deal with trauma by making jokes. It doesn't mean those people aren't affected by the incident or sincerely find it trivial. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Wow, you must be one heck of a depressed person... you know, mourning ever persons death every single day. I assume you do, right?
I assume you aren't an "asshat" hypocrite without a sense of humour, attacking people for making jokes just because you have sympathy for this one individual who you admire, but don't care when it happens to be someone you don't know (of the thousands who die every day)?
I thought as much.
Respect - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -2/+610/11/6 is 9/11/01 upside down!!! JUST THINK ABOUT IT
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@briantech
Both of you are right. Everyone is to quick to jump to conclusions. A small plane hitting a building doesn't in know way have the trademarks of a terrorist attack. As unfortunate as it is, it's being over played. A plane crashed in Russia a while back, and it got very little news coverage, a fully loaded plane crashed in South America, it got very little coverage. A small plane crashes into a building along the river in New York, with last i heard 2 confirmed deaths, and it's like all North America has to come to a stand still.
I feel very sorry for all the family affected, and it deserves it's coverage, but so do a lot of other events. - modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was saying this very thing myself, but I must conclude that this is a tragic, dramatically ironic accident.
- lsmiranda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3rip cory.
- jjb123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What the hell is your problem?
- garf12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He had one sweet plane. SR-22 is probably one of the nicest single engine pistons you can get. The flight deck is just about as high tech as any new boeing. Cost about 500k
- echo1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4posted this in another one :
"eerie too, Remember the flight that crashed in the fall AFTER 9-11 on long island? Enrique Wilson who was a Yankee at the time was originally supposed to be on that flight that ended up crashing, but ended up with a different flight because they lost the world series." - Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some Initial reports states that he has somekind of fuel problem, and that he was despirately trying to get back to the airport. There could be a million reasons why he didn't eject, either he couldn't because of a malfunction, or he was trying to avoid crashing it into buidlings and taking out innocent civilian lives.
I just hope it doesn't turn out that he was in a depressed state of mind and did this act purposely.
Regardless, it is a very sad day for the families and friends of the people affected by this event. - PunkFenixJT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Okay some people seriously need to grow the ***** up and have respect for the loss of a father, husband, and friend to many people around baseball. You can say what you want about the Yankees, love them, hate them, whatever. but this isnt about the yankees. This isnt really even about baseball. This is about a wife who will never see her husband again, and a 6 year old who's father is never coming home to see him grow up. I dont care if this was the most famous man in the world or Joe Nobody off the street, it'd affect me just the same.
and people can say what they want about the people in the apartment building, but, at least they're alive.
RIP Cory Lidle. my prayers are with the families of those affected. - diggermike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I do not agree with misteral comment but I will say when this first happened today I read many accounts on-line (and also during television coverage) that mentioned terrorist attacks. It's just hard to believe that nothing can happen in America any more without Terrorist being the first thing mentioned. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Lidle family and friends, the New York Yankees and fans, and the people in the building who have been affected.
- solvable, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Hm, September 11th.
Well, Today is October 11th.
Concidence? I THINK NOT. - Doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about them finding the bodies of Lidle and the flight instructor on the street.... how f'in terrible is that...
- jeff25624, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Wow, this is truly shocking. Jeez, what is it with the Yankee players and plane crashes? First Thurman, now Lidle. Thoughts go out to the family of course.
- chipper13a6h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why hasn't the building collapsed??? You are joking right?......comparing the impact of a small light plane that carries 80 gallons of fuel traveling at 100 knots or so to the impact and explosive power of a fully fueled 757 flying at 500 + knots is just ignorant.
As a pilot it saddens me that such a fine plane as the Cirrus has such a lousy safety record (check out the NTSB database) The safety record of general aviation has been steadily improving since the 1940's and a few hundred pilots are killed every year with thousands of flights taking place every day.
40,000 people die every year in automobiles! - TA_Superman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People don't make "jokes" about other people crashing into stuff when someone just died so they can feel better about the event. Of course everyone can be an ***** and pretend to be tough guy on the internet.
- bclawhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember watching a few outings of his during his time with the Oakland A's. He wasn't the best pitcher in the pen, but he put up a few gems. It's sad to see anyone go out like this, and my thoughts go out to his family and the victims families involve in this tragic event.
- pureliquidhw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+410 minutes?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Ugh, shutup.
- icebrk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Isn't it weird how every time a plane crashes into a building in NYC the passport of the pilot is found on the street below? I can't claim it's true but I remember Loose Change saying that too... We should start making the black boxes out of these!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I know EXACTLY what happened.
Snakes on a Plane. - SeaBass22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So anything that doesn't have to do with 9/11 is o.k. to joke about?? You're an idiot.
- garf12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1092676/M/
Thats the cockpit - atomic16, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Im not trying to offend anyone, or take away from the event or gain credit, I am new to dig even though I have been a member for a year I have only posted two articles and I had no idea that it was looked down upon to identify repeat posters, in other communities this is accepted and encouraged, I am sorry to any I have offended.
- JoeNick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Your lack of both taste and humor astonds me.
Does anyone else feel offended by how many people are rushing to make jokes out of this? - vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5A pitcher for the Yankees crashed an airplane into a building? Oh great, now the Bush administration is going to declare war on George Steinbrenner. Come to think of it, this could work out for the best...
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Seriously, what is it about this story that brought out all the trolls? Don't bother reading any of the -20 digg comments, anyone, theyre just a bunch of losers looking for attention.
- BillyIsCool, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7:( he was such a great pitcher. R.I.P. Cory Lidle
- TSHNG04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember when Cory Lidle played for the A's back in 2001 and 2002. He was a good pitcher but even a greater person. I remember going to an A's game in 2002 and I saw Cory outside behind the stadium signing autographs for the fans. He signed his autograph on a ball that I still have today. When I heard the news while I was getting ready to go to the ALCS last night I took out the ball that he had signed for me that day. He seemed like a very nice guy to hang out with. His greatest seasons was with the A's back in 2002 where he threw 38 shutout innings.
I went to the ALCS last night in Oakland and everyone at the game was sad to hear the news that Cory Lidle had died. There was a moment of silence at the game and all of the fans remembered when he had played for the A's.
RIP Cory Lidle
