- vagrantwade, on 04/06/2009, -0/+25No one deserves it more than Maddux. I look forward to seeing him elected to Cooperstown.
- thegamingguy, on 04/06/2009, -1/+21Sucks to see Smoltz in Boston this year though.
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+14Smoltz was on Dan Patrick's radio show two weeks ago talking about how Maddux used to go days without showering. Thought that was hilarious.
As a lifelong Braves fan, I love both of those guys. Thanks for the memories, Greg... - Mattman9876, on 04/06/2009, -0/+11As a life long Braves I"m glad that his number is getting retired and well deserved, one of the more underrated pitchers of our generation
- Barbarino, on 04/06/2009, -0/+10Dam it's been that long.. I remember playing as him in RBI Baseball...
- gothsquirrel, on 04/06/2009, -1/+9I never understood Why Maddux left the braves.
- Stap1eGun, on 04/06/2009, -0/+7Hate the idea of a whole season without Smoltz, or Maddux, and only a weathered Tom Glavine, but after Lowe's outing last night i'm a little more hopeful.
- gwaggy12, on 04/06/2009, -0/+7Man, that team was a win factory back in the day. It's a shame they could never get the fan support they deserved.

- uncertainty, on 04/06/2009, -0/+5So... you want to help thegamingguy game the system?
- pervy_the_clown, on 04/06/2009, -2/+7I'm a Mets fan, but damn I respect Maddux
- doublebummer, on 04/06/2009, -0/+4"The Braves will retire Maddux’s No. 31 and induct him into the Braves Hall of Fame on July 17 before a game against the Mets."
Nice, just bought my tickets. - JoeRockEHF, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3I love Maddux, can't wait to see him in the Hall of Fame.
- steger, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3The 90's were the Braves' decade.
- oHaiThar, on 04/06/2009, -2/+5that's good to hear, he deserves it. He's won like a ton of gold gloves right?
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -1/+4Maddux brings out the Wes Mantooth in all NL rivals...
- RealmDown, on 04/06/2009, -3/+6Cheer for your own team, fine; however, to hate another one is not good form.
- RealmDown, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3Ah. Well, that's baseball. :) I can tell of more than a few times that I've felt that way myself.
I'm hoping for the Braves to do a comeback this year. At least we stomped the Phils in their opening games. *chortle* - inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3Well done and well deserved. I still don't understand why the Cubs are co-retiring his number (and I'm a Cubs fan!).
- SreyaNotfilc, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2We were spoiled. It's sad to see playoff baseball and half of the seats at the Ted during the season as well as the playoffs in the 90s were empty. :(
- SreyaNotfilc, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2I may have to use my tax return to get a plane trip down to Atlanta so I can see this!
- SreyaNotfilc, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2Yah, I still don't understand why it's so hard for a pitcher who can't top 88 mph not to be noticed. I mean he still had more victories and is built closer to the average american than a 238lbs 6'4" rocket launcher. He also was smart and witty. He wasn't the sterotypical athlete I guess. He wasn't as sexy as the others I guess (I mean Heather Locklear still was intersted in Big Mac than seeing Maddog slug a few over centerfield), which is sad.

"he makes them look like they're swinging with foam bats"
-John Smoltz on Maddux - cyoder, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2I love a power pitcher as much as anyone, but when a guy with a finesse arsenal (and a non-overpowering fastball) can be as dominant as Maddux was, it's really something special to see.
- Xihix, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2When all the damn queers die.
- SreyaNotfilc, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2I believe what happened was that he wasn't as "amazing" during his final years with Atlanata. Although Maddog had went 16-6 and 16-11, it seemed as if the Braves wanted more. And rightfully so. We were trying to compete with the Yankees for being the greatest team of the 90s. The Yankees had 4 (I believe) World Series championships to our 1. We were also kicked out of the first round a few times later on in Maddux's career. I can't remember if he pitched poorly, but then again, I can't remember him pitching great during the later post seasons with the Braves.
I had a feeling that he was about to leave during those last few seasons with the Braves. Ted was a year or so away from selling team which probably put a lot of pressure on the players for compensation. Maddux (as well as Glavine) not producing "enough" in the playoffs pretty much sealed their fate. Sadly, as the payroll went down (and probably some friction between upper management and the players) he decided to leave. I remember being heartbroken over that. He's my favorite pitcher ever. Maddux was a beast! He made everything look easy while winning 18 or so games for the Braves year in year out. It was always textbook with him. I'm just happy that I got to grow up watching him pitch. It was great to see a pitcher that barely broke 88 (which is very fast to meer mortals like us) and still made batters look silly. I mean, man had a gut and was able to perform at the highest level in the sport (can someone say 355 wins and 17 seasons with 15 or more victories). He is an amazing ball player and I will miss him sorely. He knew the game inside and out. We, as Braves fans, were quite spoiled with probably the greatest trio of pitchers in MLB history.
BTW, has anyone seen the video with him basically stealing second walking duirng his Dodgers years? SICK!
I love you Maddux, and I'll be there for you at Cooperstown! - inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2bein a phils fan over the years has made me not like this guy, but he was great and is totally worthy of this
- generaleet, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2Looks like geme already got banned. Score one for the digg police!
- tmeaster, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1No doubt. This is just the first Hall of Fame for Maddux - he'll see Cooperstown 5 years from now. That guy was a pitchers pitcher.
- DaMaker, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Amen to that brother.
- Brizzyce, on 04/06/2009, -2/+2Fair enough; I don't hate the Braves, but I do hate that up until quite recently they've been beating the crap out of my Mets, at least where the division title is concerned.
- FXNGLAS, on 04/06/2009, -3/+2I never really liked the Braves, but it was always nice to watch Maddux pitch. Good for him.
- Brizzyce, on 04/06/2009, -8/+4I'm going to be honest, I hate the Braves and always will. Still though, Maddux was one of my favorite pitchers to watch, and you can't really deny how amazing he was with that team. Definitely a true Hall of Famer.
- kingofinternet, on 04/06/2009, -7/+2when will john rocker get his number retired? this is b.s.
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -20/+2great, thanks for sharing...
