- blablaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I think for him really the Giants were the only choice. The San Fran. crowd would be the only accepting crowd left in baseball.
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17He would be much better off DH'ing for an AL team. His defense atrocious.
- kavery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14That'll buy a whole lot of juice.
- BAAAAD2749024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Who wouldnt take that much money?
- Joins700, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Is it just me or does anyone else think he should retire?
- crazaalex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Thats a lot of money...And for 1 year.
It's insane the amount athletes make. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Please shut the ***** up. Seriously. You're only amusing yourself.
- heythisismyname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6See kiddies, steroids pays off.... pathetic
- ryogahibiki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ blablaman
exactly, blablaman! Which is why the Giants could've paid alot less, there's no other teams interested in him. The Giants held all the cards, but like the idiots they've been for years, they gave Bonds what he wanted.
If the Giants were smart, they would've used the Bonds money along with the Benji Molina money (worst signing in the offseason, btw) and signed Soriano instead. I hate Brian Sabean! - dodgerfan78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was at Giants-Dodger game at Dodger Stadium a couple years ago and they threw a blow-up beach-ball-like steroid bottle on the field at Barry in left field (likely not the only time). Barry just looked at as it rolled around the outfield..."STEROIDS" in big letters on it...so funny. The crowd in the left field bleachers and the 3rd base field area were chanting ROIDS! ROIDS! ROIDS! I don't think it even bothered him.
I hate Barry, he's cheater. - Gemini25RB, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@wicked9
All the better the reason, IMO. He beats out Aaron and people are gonna have a hard time putting him in the hall of fame with the steroids issue. Sure he hit a lot, but how much was because of the juice?
Actually, If McGwire gets in this year (or anytime soon), Bonds will probably get in, too. What a shame, considering Pete Rose never got in, and he played legitimately. - MidnightSon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope Hank Aaron kicks his ass.......
- jlmillr2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sounds like a pretty JUICY deal to me! haha.. oh, I kill me.
- yonbeastie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4mo' money, mo' problems. poor barry.
- uglyowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"He cant play any defense, and he cant even run."
It is true now, but he used to be able to do everything. He used to be one of the best base runners in the game. I still don't like him, but to say he isn't a good player is absurd - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Supply and demand... if people didn't pay $too much for pro game tickets and buy the crap the beer commercials tell them to (feeding those expensive broadcasting rights), then players wouldn't be paid such high salaries.
The only alternative is owners (old white guys) taking all the money, as was the system up until the 1970s. - uglyowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was really hoping no major league team would sign him. Oh well
- cam18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then what the hell would be the point in playing the game? If you play to win, then how can you justify spending that much on players or on a stadium or anything?
- lukychmz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Im just glad he didnt come to STL.....time to retire old man
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Does that include an allowance for steroids?
- spisska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"to say he isn't a good player is absurd"
No, to say he wasn't a good player is absurd. To say is no longer a good player is entirely accurate -- low offensive production, useless on the bases, nearly useless on the field, a constant locker room distraction, refuses to play day games after travelling, etc, etc.
It is a shame because he was one of the best players ever. He was almost a guaranteed Hall of Famer before he ever started doping.
Now he is, and will always be remebered as, a cheat, a liar, and a disgrace to the game of baseball. - tinygibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He brings them into SBC park. He can also hit the ball. That's better than a lot of people in the MLB.
- doon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm guesssing here but i'd bet 16 million, even after taxes, is enough to put up with all of the crap he's going to get next year. And he will get a ton of abuse, which he deseves, while he's laughing all the way to the bank. MLB is tearing their hair out because he has a real chance to break Aaron's record, and they don't know what to do.
Of course, his lawyers are going to get a nice piece of that 16 million defending him in federal court. too bad, huh? - CALHETAS99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guy does not deserve 16 cents for the season. He cheated. He is arrogant. He's a jerk.
- atlbraves10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I definitely think he should retire! He is WAY past the point of being an asset to the game! I don't think he should be given the chance to break Hank Aaron's record! I don't think he has truly earned it. Any player who can't sustain their career without artificial means isn't a true athlete. He has given baseball and the real men that play it a bad name. I will never be a fan of the Giants because they are fueling a fire that badly needs put out. Hopefully this will all backfire and Aaron will keep his record that he so rightfully earned during a time when baseball players had natural talent.
- slickrick2k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah but you're a dodger fan so you're the devil.

- nobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Lax32 your a ***** moron.
"He cant play any defense, and he cant even run. At this point in his career it is really bad, he either hits a homerun or hits a double worthy ball but gets a single out of it because he cant run. But even earlier in his career, it was much the same."
Yes he may have lost his speed and his defensive abilities but to say he was always like that is ignorant. His defense use to be top notch as i believe he has a few golden gloves under his belt. And as far as not having speed he is one of the few members of the 40 40 club (40 homeruns 40 stolen bases) and i believe he is actually the sole member in the 500 500 club. Im not telling you this as a bonds fan im telling you this as a baseball fan. get your facts straight before you go off and make such a stupid comment. - Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I dont want him to get the record, nor get into the hall of fame.
And its not really because of steroids either. I just dont think he is as good of a player as guys like either Hank Aaron or Rose (speaking HOF wise).
Rose was an amazing all around player, and the same goes with Aaron, except he was obviously a power hitter. Bonds is one dimensional. He cant play any defense, and he cant even run. At this point in his career it is really bad, he either hits a homerun or hits a double worthy ball but gets a single out of it because he cant run. But even earlier in his career, it was much the same.
Bottom line, I dont think I could justify him being HOF quality, much less with all of his baggage and asterisks he carries. - dodgerfan78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um...Barry....if the steroids things hadn't blown up so big. He would have been in greater demand and probably asked for a lot more. Just imagine if the steroids issue wasn't there...it could have been a great season. Now, I'm not giving him any credit.
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4yeah I can that side too. If McGwire is voted in it wont be for many years until this whole controversy dies down.
This may start a debate, but how much of an effect can steroids have on a someone. They can not make you hit 700 some-odd homeruns, there has to be raw talent there. It may make those 400 ft homeruns 425, but I don't really see just how much of an impact they can have. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0who cares if he did roids! no one would do roids if the winner-take-all philosophy with all the idiot sport fans chanting "we're number one" wasn't so ingrained in the culture. the society creates the situation where winning is the be - all, end - all.
it could all easily stop by simply giving equal money and bragging rights to the top several places instead of the top single place. have 2 or 3 first place winners. with timed sports like running, biking or other racing, give everyone the same time if they're within a certain distance of each other and then hand out the gold medal for the top 5 places, silver for the next 10, bronze for the next 15, and tin for the next 20. but NO, ain't gonna happen cos all you ***** are so ingrained in hero whoreship that you can't even conceive a different way. often the 1st and 2nd place guys are milliseconds apart and one guy walks away the king and the other walks away a bum. it's so ***** retarded - kgott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've been sitting in left field since Pac Bell - SBC - ATT Park opened in 2000 and watched Barry hit a couple hundred home runs. I don't pay for my tickets and beers to make a moral judgment on his character, his tax evasion, his infidelity, his sorry defense, or his steroid use. I pay to be to be an entertained sports fan, and good golly, he's entertaining. I probably would have rather seen us re-sign Schmidt, or pick up Manny, or Zito or even Pettitte, but I'll be standing up with 40,000 people every time he comes to bat this year, and spill a little bit of my $8.50 Anchor Steam, feel my pulse go up, and hope he hits it into McCovey cove, just like everyone else who loves or hates him. Is he worth 16 Million? Maybe. Is he the only guy in professional sports over the last couple of generations to use performance enhancing drugs? No. Are you going to turn on Sportscenter highlights when he gets near Hank's record, I bet you do.

- frantic24, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Just saw the story on ESPN earlier today.. Based on his stats from last year, they are calculating and predicting where and when he will break Hank Aaron's HR record. Late September in Colorado..... unbelievable!!
- seobuilder, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Both McGwire & Bonds wouldn't get to Hall until this steriods issue die down. Bonds knows it and he want to beat out the HR record anyway.
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Not when he's within reach of Aaron.
