- davidrools, on 07/01/2008, -1/+33it looks like this *
- kpmoore, on 07/01/2008, -2/+30"[Bonds] later said he would boycott the Hall if it displayed the ball with an asterisk."
All the more reason! - Brad324, on 07/01/2008, -5/+31* Bonds is a douche
- dronf23, on 07/01/2008, -4/+23I voted for the asterisk!
- InvisibleInk, on 07/01/2008, -3/+21I want to see the asterisk. Has anyone ever seen the asterisk?
- jimbohawkins, on 07/01/2008, -0/+12FTA "The ball indeed was marked, with the asterisk dye-cut into the cowhide where "Major League Baseball" is printed."
- nsummy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+9Did the link get redirected? When I clicked the link I got the headline: "Back-and-forth talks over Bonds HR ball ends with ball in Hall of Fame"
Buried as inaccurate - cadmiumpaint, on 07/01/2008, -2/+11the ball doesn't deserve to be in the hall of fame. It would be a physical representation of the steroid era, which has severely tarnished professional baseball.
If they banned Pete Rose for gambling, they should ban people for cheating. - briankoenig03, on 07/01/2008, -0/+9Put him on *your* baseball team, he doesn't have a contract....
- Egoist, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7Do you spend every Dollar left over at the end of the month on charity or do you go out and buy yourself an iPod or Playstation? Don't expect others to do what you aren't even willing to do.
- BrownBears, on 07/01/2008, -3/+9this is a shame. whether legitimate or not, this home run ball marks a pivotal moment in baseball history. it will symbolize different things to different people - to some a new high bar for one of the biggest records in the game, to some a low point in baseball and a symbol of the steroid era - but it is doubtlessly historic. that's why i was against the asterisk. i don't need an interpretation of this story shoved down my throat by mark ***** ecko in some publicity-grabbing fratboy stunt, and it only makes me more angry that his crap has robbed baseball fans and the hall of what would have been one of their more meaningful pieces. this isn't simply a slap in bonds' face, it's a slap in the face of everyone who cares about baseball history.
for the record, i think bonds brings more shame to the sport than anyone in recent history. i'm just saying, he's still history. - inactive, on 07/01/2008, -4/+9This is just the beginning of all the controvery.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5Hey, come on man
- Aurabolt, on 07/01/2008, -4/+9"Bonds finished the season with 762 home runs. The San Francisco Giants did not offer him a contract for this year, and he hasn't gotten an offer to play for another team."
Good. - inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5They should give it to Hank Aaron , maybe he could take it out on a the field and show bonds how to hit a home run without steroids.
- stevealford, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6The HOF has nothing to do with Pete Rose: if the commissioner reinstated Rose, he'd have a ***** massive display in the Hall before the announcement was even finished. As far as this ball, I voted for the asterisk. If the Hall doesn't display the ball, it's like saying nothing ever happened. Bonds gained 30 pounds of muscle, one and a half shoe sizes, and one hat size in a single offseason in his 30's. He also went from a deadeye contact hitter pulling doubles all the time to a power hitter with contact hitter's batspeed and eye who could push those previous warning-track shots into the stands. I'm not saying he used hgh, I'm just pointing out facts. If you can't draw the logical conclusion that he DID use hgh, then you're either a moron or a member of Bonds' PR team.
- stevealford, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6That's precisely WHY the ball should be there... with an asterisk on it. Ban Bonds for eternity, but keep the marked ball as a dark reminder of his tainted stats.
- mvanhorn, on 07/01/2008, -5/+9"It is not known whether Ecko ever did mark the ball. The Associated Press sent an e-mail and phoned his representative seeking comment." damn.. Must know!
- jgubbe, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5GOOD! ha ha. Unsportsman like attitude= Unsporting fans.
- fatTJ, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Steroids is not a home run juice, it helps your ALL AROUND performance...
- sognaviva, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3The HOF is basically a museum, right? Does the Louvre make a habit of overtly sugarcoating history? Hmm... I think that just might be frowned upon. If the HOF wants to continue to be viewed as a legitimate, respectable institution, they need to exhibit pieces in a way that tells the whole story.
Transparency: The Way of the Future - thebaron2, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4He answered that question in an ESPN interview:
-----------
Chris Starr: I understand you're not a Barry Bonds fan and that's fine, but wouldn't the $752,467 have been spent as a donation to charity? Isn't that a lot of money to waste on a baseball you have no intention of keeping?
Marc Ecko: Actually, as a private citizen who spends millions and millions on charity as it is and earns his money by working really hard, I think the way I spent the money is a good thing. This won't get swept under the rug. As a social issue, this is real. In terms of speaking about our values and pro sports. I think it's been good to get that debate out there. After 10 million votes, it's about seven cents a vote. I wanted to do this, I wanted to mix it up. I earned it. That's what life should be about. Good question. Fair question.

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=17 ... - stewartgorman, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Where's that confounded asterisk?
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Probably ESPN rewrote the story as events changed today.
- travis6690, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Only with one more point.
- pbpyrojust, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2It is going to the hall of fame.
- Neiby, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Major fail. Not only is the headline inaccurate, it's the exact opposite of the truth. Can't fail much worse than that.
- zyxxyz, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Would you prefer the government come and confiscate the cash every time some rich guy contemplates spending it on something you find to be frivolous? Seems to be what you're arguing here...
- cadmiumpaint, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I dunno, maybe on a special exhibit on the steroid era or something, but i dont' think it deserves to be there on permanent display.
I don't think the hall should memorialize cheating.
I haven't been there since i was a kid so i dont' really remember, but is there a huge permanent Baseball museum there that chronicles the history of the game? Do they showcase the blacksox, Pete Rose and other famous tarnishes?
I know they have special exhibits, and i guess that ball would belong in a chronological kinda of museum space. - Louis11, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2I still think sending it into orbit would have been much cooler.
- richlizard24, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Bonds will never be inducted into the HOF. Look at Mark McGuire. He was an amazing baseball player and was an easy first ballot inductee for sure. Then the steroid scandal broke and he was one of the players to be heavily scrutinized over it. He has been on the ballot twice and received less than 30% of the vote both times. People actually liked McGuire, more so than Bonds.
- tomato1324, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1the article was updated since it was posted. its just a link, so it only shows the headline that was there when it was originally posted. stuff on digg like this, its not live updating, like some kind of feed or something. so yes, im sure they DID read it before they posted it.
- m4ttGT, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Hank Aaron is the true home run king.
- Jpardue, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb ...
- brianjlowry, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1And of Pete Rose?
- richlizard24, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Like he was going to get voted into the Hall in the first place.
- sinurgy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Don't worry about it, ARod is going to pass Bonds anyway and that ball will go into the HoF as the record holder. Bonds can just fade away.
- zyxxyz, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1You're absolutely right. Bonds was a tremendously talented player when he was a skinny guy. MVP, Golden Gloves, All-Stars, awesome amounts of money... so why'd he choose to drop trou and take a big dump all over baseball history by pumping up like a pro bodybuilder to crush home run records he maybe could have beaten naturally? The latter years of his career tarnish all the greatness that came before it, and warrants a refusal to vote for him when it comes to HOF inclusion.
- johnbonham1, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2did you read the article before you posted this? the ball is in the hall with an asterisk, but your title says that its not.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1an intelligent comment.
though of course a hall of fame is not impartial. - s9er80, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1i wont digg you down, in fact i will digg you up. ive been saying this for years, bonds has many accolades and achievements other than the amount of home runs he has hit.
hes a career .300 hitter, 2000+ hits, 500 stolen bases, 10+ gold gloves. it goes on and on, the guy was a great ALL AROUND baseball player - ToRoE, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1BS! why would ekco say he was giving the ball to the HOF, then not. I smell BS and want to hear Ecko's side... Did he or didn't he give the ball to them?
- paulmer2003, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Guilty by assoication? Lame.
- sims5487, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2Well then, why don't you follow your own example and donate the money you spend on internet access in order to post on a frivolous social site like Digg instead?
- johnnyblazepw, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1why do olympic sprinters take them if they dont help with speed
- gryphon50, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0it makes it all the more pathetic then that he chose to tarnish his reputation in this way. You're saying he would have been a baseball player of note even without the steroids, and if so then he should have been content with that.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1I would keep the ball in my toilet so I can ***** on it every day.
- s9er80, on 07/02/2008, -1/+0I disagree, few power hitters can hit .300, 2500 hits, steal that many bases and field that well. Remember, a gold glove is the award given to the best fielder at that position. Steroids don't help you field, and steroids, generally don't translate into speed.
