- awesometastic1, on 04/30/2008, -18/+73pinero got lucky. that must have really hurt though
- DanceParty33, on 04/30/2008, -6/+1my thoughts exactly
- metallimus, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10Except that he did a very similar play tonight against the Reds. A grounder was hit back to him, he kicked out his leg, the ball deflected to Izturis at short, and he fired on to 1st for the out.
He also did one like it last year. Supposedly, he practices this maneuver. I'm just worried he will hurt himself on one of those.- TeamBaldwin, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Beat me to it...
They talked about him practicing stopping balls like that on Fox Sport Midwest during the game

- shondell, on 04/30/2008, -28/+13lucky? he obviously kicked his foot up with the intention of hitting the ball and the throw to first while running in the opposite direction was anything but luck. But i guess you are right about one thing you prick, it probably did hurt.
- bobcrotch, on 04/30/2008, -2/+8Yeah I mean you're totally pointing out why it's less amazing, since it's so easy and common.
- alexforcefive, on 04/30/2008, -1/+8And insulting the guy was a nice touch. You're super cool, shondell
- diothar, on 04/30/2008, -0/+11Was calling awesometastic1 a prick really necessary?
- db0255, on 04/30/2008, -2/+8There was some luck to it, but I think pitchers are told to try to knock down the ball if they can. So it wasn't as if he just magically had his leg out there. I wouldn't call you a prick though....
- 36CrzyFsts, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Pinero has mad skillz....
- notanidiot, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2yeah, he's lucky his leg wasn't broken...
- NuFadZoo, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8This is actually the 2nd time he's done that.
- mpineiro, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4*Sigh.* I don't mean to be a nazi here, but why can't anybody spell the last name that the baseball player and I share. It's PINEIRO. There's an I after the E. It's also technically Piñeiro, but i know that's too technical for most people.
Sorry. - StevenJV, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1hopped up on steroids no doubt (watch the madness begin)
- archmotel, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1he did it again last night, heres the stream, i dunno how to make it open directly, but here u go: mms://a1503.v108692.c10869.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1503/10869/v0001/mlb.download.akamai.com/10869/2008/open/mlbam/2008/04/29/mlbtv_cinsln_258447_400K.wmv
- mcfly99, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1kick save and a beauty!
- bonk2k, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Maybe it was lucky that his foot was in the right place at the right time, but it took skills to then catch it, recover, and throw it to first, after all of that.
- Olly29, on 05/27/2008, -0/+0 It is always easier when their is nothing left to chance which is why I get my sports picks at lakers nationsportspicks.blogspot.com they frequently win 20 or more ina row and they are absoluely free. Try them out, thats

- alexmensen, on 04/30/2008, -17/+232In the middle of Hockey play offs??? Did he say that?
- gaapgod, on 04/30/2008, -29/+1In the middle of the hockey playoffs? WTF does that have to do with anything?
- mazarino, on 04/30/2008, -2/+121it's like a goalie's kick save
- 8randon, on 04/30/2008, -3/+20It might be how Piniero has the quick reflexes of a goalie.. the announcer must have been too amazed to form anything coherent, and just said the first thing on his mind.
Or I could be completely wrong. - SeventhSon, on 04/30/2008, -0/+11He did say he controlled his rebound, I'm not sure if that's a term used in baseball, but it's pretty common for goalkeepers.
- shondell, on 04/30/2008, -10/+1maybe he meant in the middle of the soccer off-season
- flyers126, on 04/30/2008, -4/+20the NHL is into it's semifinal round of the playoffs, so yeah, the announcer is right.
- alexdemers, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Division Semifinal...
- rupprupp29, on 04/30/2008, -3/+47It's a clip from the Pittsburgh broadcast. Hockey is a pretty big deal in Pittsburgh, so I think he was just trying to relate to the audience with a 'kick save' analogy or something like that.
- kylejn, on 04/30/2008, -2/+10Go Pens!
- shawnanigans, on 04/30/2008, -22/+22Plus hockey players regularily block shots off their body. And hockey is a better sport than baseball.
- k1down, on 04/30/2008, -7/+2Stupid canuck
- Namco, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6This stupid fat american (me), agrees with shawnanigans.
- k1down, on 04/30/2008, -7/+2Stupid canuck
- daizaru, on 04/30/2008, -3/+8There are 8 teams left in the hockey playoffs right now, that move was reminiscent of a goalie who deflects the puck off his body and then catches it in his glove hand. The comment was perfectly relevant.
- loconet, on 04/30/2008, -7/+1Yes the hockey playoffs. Because the pitcher used a stick and a glove like some diggers are suggesting. ...why compare it to an event closer to what he actually did and that it's happening right now..like... you know.. the champions league semifinals.... too obvious?
- royalboyle, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5As much as I love football, I don't think most baseball fans are going to have a clue what the Champions League is, so referencing it would be idiotic.
- YagLana, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4I'm guessing most baseball fans would be American, so saying "football" would just confuse them even more.
- royalboyle, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5As much as I love football, I don't think most baseball fans are going to have a clue what the Champions League is, so referencing it would be idiotic.
- Rmo4, on 04/30/2008, -5/+5That was awesome!
- buddypriefert, on 04/30/2008, -16/+11Perfect control of one's balls.
- RealityCheque, on 04/30/2008, -5/+1I bet you were REALLY hoping you would win some "friends" with that comment, weren't you nerd?
- thanakar, on 04/30/2008, -4/+2What you bitching about, it was funny and you know it.
- buddypriefert, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Who knows, but it looks like you lost a few friends with your whining attack.
- RealityCheque, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1How is me telling you that your attempt to win friends (with a stupid comment) whining? (It's not, it's called "mocking you", something I am sure you are used to by now, nerd).

- DeadeyeDick, on 04/30/2008, -17/+2This is from last week...old old news. Piniero already pitched again tonight. Old old old.
- jdmzpf, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Pitched a Hell of a Game as well, no trick plays like this one though
- thatcrazycommie, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Who the ***** cares? God forbid we not be up to date on every highlight of every game.
- jmoh, on 04/30/2008, -14/+90too bad plays like this don't happen more often, i'd actually watch a baseball game if they somehow did.
- Namaha, on 04/30/2008, -0/+21If it happened more often it wouldn't be as interesting ;)
- nighthawk8713, on 04/30/2008, -0/+13That's why I only go to blurnsball games now.
- NSNick, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2That's why you only go to dime-a-dog night. :P

- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2I care. You hurt my feelings.
- raeshao, on 04/30/2008, -13/+56I'll take this one for play of the week.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9tJzjlbw7k- ngmcs8203, on 04/30/2008, -1/+34Haha... I love the left fielders expression. He just stands there and stares.
- fancyj, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2there was another clip where they showed the pitcher, ryan dempster's, reaction. his eyes were wide open and you just see his lips spell out "oh my god" everyone in the bullpen had their jaws on the floor too. probably one of the best catches since the infamous edmonds dive when he played for the angles or griffeys jump into the wall with his leg out.
- charlie55, on 04/30/2008, -7/+5that was much better than the headline one here.
- carleethian, on 04/30/2008, -10/+5cubs suck
- jakobmakob, on 04/30/2008, -4/+5Go Cubs!
- daizaru, on 04/30/2008, -2/+14Good but common, the kick save was one in a million. I'd have to give it to the Original post.
- JSager, on 04/30/2008, -2/+18That was an amazing catch but you see a few of those every season... I've never seen a play like that pitcher made... ever.
- klipseracer, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3^^ Exactly. A diving catch. You've never heard of that before?
- cveltma, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Play of the week? Try play of the year.
To the others: Common? You all are either out of your minds or don't watch baseball. That catch is one of the most skilled plays in baseball you will see in your lifetime. The pitcher can be seen mouthing "That was the best catch Ive ever seen" in other clips and Bob, Len, Pat, Ron and every other non-cubs sportscaster I heard talk about it agreed. That was not simply a diving catch. In other clips He covered nearly half the field and laid out at full speed to catch that ball. You can't see it in that video but he almost didn't catch that. The balls trajectory was a bit off from his dive and he had to make a midair adjustment to literally pluck the ball out of the air. Here is a link with a great closeup angle of the catch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPx7S5humVo&feature ...
- ngmcs8203, on 04/30/2008, -1/+34Haha... I love the left fielders expression. He just stands there and stares.
- Alix7, on 04/30/2008, -10/+16Good save by Michael Jordan because that shot was a surefire GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLL which could have led to a touchdown
- HalsMyPal, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2i like how the commentator commentates so calmly until after he gets the guy out
- ZiggityZhang, on 04/30/2008, -7/+34From a St. Louisan, Go Cards!!!!

- SteelTallon, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6Bruce Lee would be proud.... Whoo ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
- pete8475, on 04/30/2008, -3/+3That pitcher is lucky he didn't get hurt. Pitchers are told NOT to try to stop balls with their feet because of the injury risk. Losing a pitcher for the season because he broke his foot to stop a grounder isn't worth it.
- N256, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4To me it looks like he's trying to get his foot out of the way.
- soybeast, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1actually I think they're told not to stop it unless they have a good chance at it. supposedly letting your infielders handle it is better (or not depending on the defensive alignment).
- stavro, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1You can debate the game-minded vs. career-minded approach in baseball, but in reality, many things happen so fast that the instinctive reaction takes over.
- FranksValli, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Half skill, half luck. Very cool :)
- kagayaki1, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Dugg for Piñeiro, former Seattle Mariner - we're so better off without him kicking balls into the air.
- halbanero, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Haha. Glad we got rid of him. Although we could use some bullpen help about now.
- Odstwar, on 04/30/2008, -7/+1Turns out he was using FpsBrain guys! http://www.fpsbrain.com/?switchLanguage=english

- lupka, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1i remember seeing that on the highlights last week. i've never seen anything quite like that.
- Thayin, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Except last week...when you watched the highlights.
- DaviDTC, on 04/30/2008, -7/+6imo baseball always has the best top 10 plays.
- KillerStone, on 04/30/2008, -4/+1Heh, cool. I got Joel Pinero's autograph when he played for the Mariners.
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6That probably helped him make that play.
- 0zzy, on 04/30/2008, -4/+11:) Glad to see St. Louis Cardinals back on the front page.
- Malakii, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4I pitched relief when I played rec baseball and a little in high school, and have taken a shot like that to my leg before. Props to that man for takin the pain, cuz I can guarantee it hurt like hell.
- mal1964, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12Reading the title had me thinking, "The closer saving a game"
- EclipseAgent, on 04/30/2008, -5/+4What does kicking it up have ANYTHING to do with "Being in the middle of the Hockey Playoffs"..
On that note.. I sure hope Sharks in 4 in a row.- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1similar to a goalie stopping a shot.
- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2This is a web gem for sure!
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -5/+1Anyone who actually watches Sportscenter for sports is not a true sports fan at all.
The last time Sportscenter has been relevent is the day Keith Olberman left...which coincidentally is the last time Keith Olberman has been relevent.- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Actually I watch Baseball Tonight, not Sportscenter.
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Both suck. Everything on ESPN sucks if you are a true sports fan.
- GregFD3S, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1How does watching Baseball Tonight from time to time make me a non true sports fan?
Please elaborate.
- GregFD3S, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1How does watching Baseball Tonight from time to time make me a non true sports fan?

- fieldhockey44, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Anyone know if he was able to keep playing after that? Looked really painful
- kipmartin, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5if that play was an OS, it would be OS X Leopard. if it was a candidate, it would be Obama. if it was a car, it would be a Prius. and if it was a drink, it would be a Sonic cherry limeade.
- SeventhSon, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7If it were a Prius, I'd sneak up to it at night and put a bumper sticker on it that says "My other car is a high horse"
- CrunchyDeluxe, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Nah... if that play was an OS, it'd be Vista. If it was a candidate, it'd be Mike Huckabee. If it was a car, it'd be a Mercedes... CLK, probably. If it was a drink? Eh, a Captain Morgan...
- bryantee, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Huckabee and Vista? Honestly?
- diskit, on 04/30/2008, -0/+25I didn't know ninjas play baseball.
- mal1964, on 04/30/2008, -0/+14You're not supposed to know.
- ryananger, on 04/30/2008, -3/+0Or are you???
- mal1964, on 04/30/2008, -0/+14You're not supposed to know.
- ablack86, on 04/30/2008, -2/+6Piniero has done this 3 times now this year, including once tonight vs the Reds resulting in another out. (All while throwing a 1 hitter might I add.)
Go Cards! - murra, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Nice one!
- smbrower, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4absolutely heroic...and that's coming from a cubs fan!

- MyDiggIsBig, on 04/30/2008, -4/+1it honestly looked like he flicked his leg up after the ball already hit him. His little leg lift only makes it seem that he controlled it. He really didn't do much but keep his foot out, (which is partial instinct) and he got lucky it popped up. Nice job and dedication, but really, not much skill. because when a ball travels that fast, and with that much spin, the person can't control it much other than to intefere with it, which he did. still it was nice.
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Of course he didn't control it. No one is suggesting he did.
He DID, however, have the wherewithall to stick with it, immediately find it and spring off the mound to field it and make the quick toss. Most of the time when this happpens, the pitcher does not see where the ball went in time to make the play. - MyDiggIsBig, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1unfortunatley if you read some comments, many people are suggesting that he did.

I'm sorry, if you don't like baseball you're a ***** communist.- coollettuce, on 04/30/2008, -12/+4The last ball game I went to was last week because my mom got free tickets. I spent most of the time debating politics with a private contractor who works in Iraq, he was a McCain supporter.
- bfk68, on 04/30/2008, -2/+5you're an ass
- momsshizzle, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Baseball sucks so I'm a communist.

- arlok789, on 04/30/2008, -3/+0Ok, I was at the Nats vs. Cubs game where Johnson made that ridiculous catch, but this play might even be more badass.
