- MikeWesten, on 07/10/2009, -0/+19Ricky's retirement speech...Ricky Henderson was the best Ricky Henderson that Ricky Henderson could be.
Man that MF was fast on the basepaths, and those green mizuno batting gloves were badass. - bash1979, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7My favorite Rickey Henderson story (from http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/baseballrumors.htm ... under #6):
Rumor: Rickey Henderson, who played with John Olerud with the Blue Jays and Mets, knew the first baseman wore a batting helmet in the field. When the two played together again later in Seattle, Henderson said it was funny, he knew another guy in who did the same thing. Olerud replied, "That was me. We were teammates."
Even though it turned out to be a myth, Olerud's "it sure sounds like it could be true" comment pretty much sums up the general opinion of Rickey. - smacksaw, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6Rickey is a hoot. He was my favourite player for a long time and I got lucky enough to meet him. He's larger than life. He's really a celebrity. I love that guy. I just wished I could be there to see it get retired amongst the great fans of the A's (notice I didn't say Oakland, don't want to give credit to the Raiders).

- billygreen23, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4You're going to discredit his entire 25-year career because of one sentence? He and Brock worked on the speech together and Brock approved it.
Ricky is the greatest base stealer of all time. He's also a really good guy. Let's honor one of the few upstanding greats of baseball rather than punish him over one sentence. - MMusick, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5I loved Rickey until he made the least humble speech of all time and upstaged the legend Lou Brock while Lou was there to honor him.
- Fistocrange, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Fistocrange thinks Rickey is one of the Greatest players Fistocrange has ever seen in Fistocrange's entire life.

- AZBioDsl, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3pick up the phone Rickey Henderson it's me... you!
- jocknerd, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3My favorite player of all-time. The greatest lead-off hitter ever. At the age of 43, he had an OBA of .369, better than Jose Reye's career high.
- thrashcowboy666, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2The bonus check story is one of the best things ever.
- mordeci, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Rickey wore 35 for his first 6 years with the A's. Didn't switch to 24 until he went to the yankees. He did wear 24 in his last 3 stints (all or part of 8 seasons) with the A's. He did have 300 more A's ABs as #24 than #35.
More useless trivia: He's a rarity in baseball history. Only about 500 of the 15,000 players in MLB history (~3%) threw left but hit right. - Stomper622, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Growing up outside of Oakland, I got to watch Rickey play many a times.
Congrats Rickey on having your jersey retired by the A's. Next stop, the HOF. - analogkid01, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2"Pick up the phone, Rickey...it's me - you!"
- vbullinger, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I only came here just to see a Ricky Henderson-referring-to-himself-in-third-person joke.
- itc518, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1I have always liked Rickey, growing up he was one of my favorites. My favorite all time is still Mattingly but Rickey was such an exciting and explosive player.
- HtomSirveaux, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Man, that mother *****'s never there.
- theonlybradever, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1i love that Olerud story. Rickey's over the top self promotion was awesomely hilarious to watch, and he was just amazing at the game. first ballet hall o' fame obviously.
- nwhysee, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1Today i consider myself the greatest base stealer of all time.
- skipvt, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1Great baseball player, douchebag as a person.
- sizzzzlerz, on 07/10/2009, -1/+0Wait, Rickey retired? Last I heard he was playing A ball in Fargo, hoping to make it back to the Show.
- dinglebutt, on 07/10/2009, -3/+0Stealing must've come naturally.
