Athletics to Retire Henderson's Number

upi.com — The Oakland Athletics announced Thursday the team will retire the jersey No. 24 of Rickey Henderson prior to a scheduled game Aug. 1.

    Man that MF was fast on the basepaths, and those green mizuno batting gloves were badass.

    Rumor: Rickey Henderson, who played with John Olerud with the Blue Jays and Mets, knew the first baseman wore a batting helmet in the field. When the two played together again later in Seattle, Henderson said it was funny, he knew another guy in who did the same thing. Olerud replied, "That was me. We were teammates."

    Even though it turned out to be a myth, Olerud's "it sure sounds like it could be true" comment pretty much sums up the general opinion of Rickey.

I just wished I could be there to see it get retired amongst the great fans of the A's (notice I didn't say Oakland, don't want to give credit to the Raiders).

    Ricky is the greatest base stealer of all time. He's also a really good guy. Let's honor one of the few upstanding greats of baseball rather than punish him over one sentence.

  • mordeci, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Rickey wore 35 for his first 6 years with the A's. Didn't switch to 24 until he went to the yankees. He did wear 24 in his last 3 stints (all or part of 8 seasons) with the A's. He did have 300 more A's ABs as #24 than #35.

    More useless trivia: He's a rarity in baseball history. Only about 500 of the 15,000 players in MLB history (~3%) threw left but hit right.
