- Bukowsky, on 10/14/2009, -0/+17This is the dumbest way for the Astros to start the offseason... I agree that the coaching staff needs a shake-up, but to fire a long-time player, coach and local legend? If anybody needs to be replaced it's Ed Wade, because he's made some really bone-headed moves over the last few years.
- PhilPerspective, on 10/14/2009, -0/+16The Astros need to rethink this. I remember Cruz well. His funky batting style. The glory days of Astros baseball(1980-86). If only J.R. Richard never suffered that stroke.
- Barisax89, on 10/14/2009, -0/+14I completely disagree with that call. As a loyal fan I hate to see that has happened. And hopefully the 'Stros will recognize there mistake in doing this
- bossm4n, on 10/14/2009, -0/+6Man, ain't that the truth. What the hell has Ed Wade done to move the Astros in the right direction? This is Another Nolan Ryan situation. You don't disrespect hall of famers and legends like that. This would be like the Orioles releasing Cal Ripken. Just a dick move.
- philliesphan026, on 10/14/2009, -1/+6As a Phillies fan, I was extremely happy when Ed Wade was fired after 2005. I don't think it's a coincidence that we've made the post-season three out of the four years since he's left. I really don't know what the Astros were thinking when they took him on as a GM, but I can't help but feel bad for the fans of that organization...
- diggonit, on 10/14/2009, -0/+5Fire Tal Smith now!
Tal Smith is the man behind the curtains as a special advisor to the owner. Tal Smith actually runs the team. He is the person primarily responsible for running th Astros into the ground. He needs to go, not Cheo. - kolop1, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4If the Astros start winning no one will care.
- JHole04, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4His name is José Cruz.
His name is not Jose' Cruz. - Gr00ver, on 10/14/2009, -0/+3FTA: “Tal and I met with (Cruz) this morning and told him we were going to reassign him,” Wade said. “He would be sort of a hybrid between what Al Pedrique did for us last year and what Larry Dierker and Jimmy Wynn do. It's similar to what Enos performs for us.
“He would be in uniform pregame for all home games, and then at game time he'd come up here to sit with us in the GM box with Tal, me and Enos.” - TexanRudeBoy, on 10/14/2009, -0/+3Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz!!!!
- iFap, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3Corporate America strikes again! There is no loyalty in any American sports anymore. It is only about turning a profit. They know the fans are morons with the attention span of a fruit fly who will pack the stands anyway. By the end of the World Series, no one will even be talking about this.
- bossm4n, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1I know they're going to try to offer him some type of appeasement deal to pacify the fans, but the whole thing was just handled so poorly. Like I said, the guy deserves better than that.
- SEN5241, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Diacrìtic FAIL!
- 0firefly0, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1Haven't all sports always been about turning a profit?
- tman84, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2"I'm guessing a lot of season tickets holders will be calling tomorrow to cancel"
I'm glad this is a news article and not the op/ed section. Oh wait, the users of this website doesn't know the difference.
Yeah it may be unpopular, but life will go on, winning will make people forget or so will time. Baseball will be played and people will pay to see it. I don't really remember anyone saying they can't wait to go to a baseball game to see the manager sign the lineup card or the third base coach stand there. - oseary, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2As a Cards fan, I really enjoyed the good 'ol days of Bagwell & Biggio in their prime (who didn't?), it's been sad to say the least, watching the 'Stros morph into the team they've become over the last couple of years. Is that a coaching staff/upper-management issue, or player development/recruiting issue? As a general Central Division fan, here's to hoping the 'Stros kick it back in gear.
- d3dm, on 10/14/2009, -3/+2And here is one more reason why they're called "The Disastros."
