- Mship, on 07/04/2009, -11/+31Right, because the only thing that Cuban baseball player is looking for when they defect to America is freedom. It not like they are trying to join the Major League baseball teams so they can eventually make millions of dollars a year. It only because Cuba is a hellhole of a country to live in.
- dsmith5237, on 07/04/2009, -0/+17What about respecting a person's right to live peacefully in whatever country in which they can contribute to society?
- suntzusputnik, on 07/04/2009, -4/+20i'm no athlete, but i am cuban. i have a hard time commenting on articles regarding cuba, too many mixed feelings i guess. this quote seems appropriate though:
'Not too long ago two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are! I had someplace to escape to." In that sentence he told us the entire story.'
- Ronald Reagan - orenthal, on 07/04/2009, -8/+22he just left a healthcare paradise, what a dumbass. i guess he didn't see that michael moore movie "sicko".
- dsmith5237, on 07/04/2009, -4/+16
Obama, please normalize relations with Cuba and end the need for stuff like this. - charlie55, on 07/04/2009, -0/+11yeah that sux for those jerks who immediately become rich and live in freedom.
- schnikies79, on 07/04/2009, -0/+10Sovereignty of the individual > sovereignty of a country.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -2/+11part of being free is to be able to profit off your talents he did not become a great baseball player sitting on his ass. As a Cuban I can tell you, yes Cuba is that bad to live in people don't leave Cuba for the same reason they don't leave north Korea. you would lose what little you have if they sent you back or caught you trying to escape.
- apzdsx, on 07/04/2009, -1/+9@Mship
I was born in Cuba, and yes the living conditions in Cuba are terrible unless you have the right connections, most people in the country live in poverty. I was lucky enough to be born to a very successful and influential father who sent me on a plane to the US the first chance he got. So stfu since you're clearly have no idea of what you're talking about. - codyman, on 07/04/2009, -1/+9I still can't believe how Castro hasn't croaked yet
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7Wait..what? You think people are trying to escape Cuba because we won't let tourists go there?
- charlie55, on 07/04/2009, -2/+9well, killing your opponents to maintain your dictatorship isnt really what i would call success for anyone except the dictator.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+8Cuba isn't properly communist, just as nowhere ever has been.
the closest example to it you'll probably find are the israeli kibbutz and even they weren't communist. - Rain12913, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7He's not in Cuba....
- dhughes, on 07/04/2009, -2/+8 Why does the USA want defective Cuban athletes? ;)
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+6the US is home base for us cubans. I really doubt he misses not having air conditioning, a car, food or freeedom. you must be a dumb ass.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -2/+8What? He left behind all that free healthcare?
- benihime, on 07/04/2009, -1/+6Hey douchebag why not try and go and live in cuba for a bit. Lets see how much you like it when you have to go and buy food with a little booklet because you are only allowed to buy a certain amount of food and your monthly salary is $25. Stfu and find something intelligent to say before you say anything at all. Cojones eres comemierda
- suntzusputnik, on 07/04/2009, -1/+5i know first hand that it isn't
- Akileese, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4In more breaking and shocking news, turns out he's probably 26 and not 21.
- evilesttoast, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4Tin foil hats at the ready!
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -3/+6Surviving 50 odd years in the shadow of a superpower who hates you and tries to make your life difficult is pretty successful.
Its not perfect but it's not Haiti or Guatamala either. - whorunbartertwn, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4sshhhhh apzdsxa, you don't want your real life experience to interrupt the silly notion of Cuban paradise that people who saw movie by fat rich guy who speaks for the poor made.
- carlosos, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Yes, asylum is legal immigration while the parents you are talking about are illegal immigrants.
I'm saying this as a German living legally in the USA since 9 years. Why should the ones that do the illegal way have it easier than the ones that do the immigration the legal way?
I personally believe that the legal immigration way should be made simpler so that educated people that bring money and jobs into the country have it easier while keeping the uneducated and poor that only take jobs and cost the country money stay out. - mkriss5681, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4If the Yankee sign this guy I swear I am not going to give MLB another dollar until there is a salary cap.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3i hope you realize how many ways your comment is absurd.
(I will tell you the worst way...a person filing for bankruptcy lives a FAR better life than an average Cuban.) - rdoger6424, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Because they're still under warranty.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Moi?
- ChiaGod, on 07/04/2009, -1/+3It's the socialized healthcare in Cuba! It's the only explanation!
(Though seriously, the do have a crapload of doctors on that little island) - ReallyFunGuy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2I personally find you to be an idiot. Communism is nothing more than slavery of the state; the state decides your life in entirety.
- paulvq, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2It's so he can have the the choice to join an MLB team and make millions, whereas if he were still in Cuba, he wouldn't have that choice.
So yes it is about freedom. - Tegurit34, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Some people are putting him on the same pedestal as Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper and Daisuke Matsuzaka when he was looking for a contract. If true, Chapman's asking price may be upwards of $30- or even 40 million with leverage to market himself to all 30 teams. You can bet he'll be receiving a phone call from superagent Scott Boras.
- rdoger6424, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2@Jalh
No, he's definitely right. Cuba has great hospitals.
It's just that the locals aren't using them. Those are the "Tourist" hospitals. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2yes.because those dozens of people that board rickety rafts EVERY DAY are just trying to escape prosecution for crimes they committed.
It is honestly like you constantly try to be as stupid as possible with every post. - foofightrs777, on 07/04/2009, -2/+4I'm pretty sure it's spite that sustains him at this point.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+3and what about all the REGULAR people who risk their lives (far more than the athetes who simply step aside and ask for asylum) to get here?
They are doing it for the hell hole reason. - Zambimaru, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2As long as he does his immigration paperwork like all the other legal immigrants, I'll welcome him with open arms.
- digitalArtform, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Quick! Seal the border!
- Vorsprung, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2The Yankees? He'll have to kiss his freedom to grow facial hair goodbye.
- STBAT25, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2The reason Cuban players want to play for the Yankees isn't just for the money. The Yankees have a huge following in Cuba partially because they were a dominant and respected team when the revolution started.
- ThraxyWaxy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Scott Boras needs to be ax-murdered!
- Rain12913, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1It's sad that I'll get buried for simply stating fact. Nowhere did I interject my opinion regarding whether I think Cuba's health care system is superior to that of the United States, or even whether I think the Cuban government is doing a good job at anything. All I said was that there do exist certain Cuban hospitals that are just as good as the best American hospitals. This is the truth, do some research on it, and if you blindly bury it simply because you're against Cuba than you're a mindless drone just like Fidel's henchmen.
Jalh: Do you restrict your realm of knowledge to things that you've personally experienced or witnessed? I sure do hope not, because you'd be limiting yourself greatly if that were the case. I know that there are some world class Cuban hospitals because I've done my research on the subject. Since you have never been to the best hospital in Cuba either, then, by your own standards, you are unfit to bury me or have an opinion on the matter. - mkw408, on 07/04/2009, -1/+2you must mean the perception of Freedom. There is no Freedom in the United States unless you have a large trust fund.
- JohnEHubertz, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Economic freedom involves border tariffs, ultra-high taxation of people who think they deserve more then a few times the wages of a real worker, and the death of lying fools on pulpits and television.
Not death as in dead, but their lying voices written out of our history books and textbooks.
Does no one notice that our economy is in ruins and it is due to borders being open to PRODUCTS and the sale of key assets to stateless super-corporations? - BlueStarr, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1@pap232323 seems like you appreciate everything you fat ***** *****. Keep suckin uncle sam's dick you mindless *****! You'll die before I will you ***** lard-ass! LOL
- JohnEHubertz, on 07/06/2009, -1/+2My name is John Hubertz, I am bipolar (crazy) thus I proudly wear a tinfoil hat - but not against alien voices, but because I can't afford a 900 dollar kevlar police thug hat.
Think of this small scenario:
Place: Washington - Scene, street 4 lanes wide. One fat bald hippie holding a sign wearing a tin hat.
(fade in to earlier moment as old fat hippie prepares for protest)
(apartment interior)
(John carefully places his "tinfoil hat" (folded into a Patriot's tricorn shape - like George Washington's) on his bald head.
He lifts a 30 year year old peace sign -
(fade to street - four lanes wide - same old hippie in tin hat)
There I stand. Pennsylvania Avenue... (this is now a crime - read the law)..
....a tank approaches - it is leased from Halliburton. It is there to defend the millionaires from the starving people surrounding their own Capital Building.
The tin foil hat "maniac" is crushed for the crime of caring and paying attention.
(finis)
I may be bipolar, but I am not crazy enough to believe all I am told. People - we are the problem if we think it is OK to get fat while people starve. Greed is not illegal - it is immoral and destroys the future for our kids you blind fools. - BlueStarr, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Fighting for me? Listen little dick I didn't ask ANYONE TO ***** FIGHT FOR ME OR KILL FOR ME SO SHUT THE ***** UP. I'm sick of this country and they deserve what they get. ***** U.
- JohnEHubertz, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1His immigration paperwork is complete when he banks his signing bonus.
As our young mom's work at taco-bell and raise kids without dads because they are in jail due to no good jobs and desperation and silly drug and alcohol rules.
Ever ask yourself why poor people are now required to pretend they are at work 24 hours a day, yet rich criminals like Dick Cheney walk free?
Simple - no morality can abide in the heartless boardrooms we allow to control our government.
PEOPLE - if your congressman is richer then you by even 25%, how can he REPRESENT your interests?
PEOPLE - if your town is invaded by corporate moneymen intent on buying your only big factory, WHY DO WE LET THEM
PEOPLE - read the Bill of RIGHTS. Wouldn't you rather have some regular folks who need to come home to live each summer voting your needs, then some rich bastard who went to a nicer school because he was RICH and isolated?
Why do we allow them to be different from us - rich people are not the average american. - ernestog84, on 07/04/2009, -1/+2so yes to sealing off the island???
- JohnEHubertz, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Obama, please normalize our laws to provide unions for workers and limits on greedy athletes and legal and criminal penalties for greedy corporation executives.
THEN our kids might - have a chance. -
