- joculator, on 10/18/2009, -3/+13...and order returns to the universe.
- StreakyBacon19, on 10/18/2009, -13/+22You realize that their payroll is indicative of the profit they make from putting a winning team on the field every season? Would you rather Hank Steinbrenner pocket all that money or put it into the team? Fact of the matter is, Yankee ownership is great to it's fans, and the Yankees competing for the championship is good for the whole league. What are you complaining about? So much hatred is targeted at the Yankees when, in reality, they have little to do with the failing of some teams. It is what it is.
- vsujohn2, on 10/18/2009, -10/+19Great to the fans? When they charge the highest price for a seat in sports? Yeh, I'm sure they love that, because yankee fans are insane like that. And they do have a lot to do with the failing of other teams, they lure away all the good players with the promise of outrageous contracts that no other team could possibly afford. Hell, Jeter, A-Rod and Teixeira combined make more than 12 whole MLB teams. Thats some pretty big competitive imbalance.
- KibblesnBitts, on 10/18/2009, -11/+20As a Yankee fan I must admit this game was horrible and sloppy beyond all hell. And we'll probably be seeing the NLCS being played almost just as bad tomorrow night with the crappy weather the Northeast has been having.
But that being said, hell yeah Bronx Bombers! - Misinformant, on 10/18/2009, -6/+14I feared that 5-hour nail-biter would give me a heart attack and I'm 25.
A-Rod chose a good time to make up for the past post-season slack. - joculator, on 10/18/2009, -6/+14Whaaa! Whaaaa! They've got a high payroll....whaaa.
You must be a Met fan. - vsujohn2, on 10/18/2009, -0/+4***** that, I hate the Mets. My team's payroll is about the league average, but even then, thats less than half of the yankee's payroll.
- vsujohn2, on 10/18/2009, -22/+26Seriously ***** the yankees and their 200 million+ payroll. 65 million more than the next highest team. Considering how much they're paying their players, they better be ***** winning every night.
- PunkFenixJT, on 10/18/2009, -3/+5Yes, the yankees have the highest payroll, but it's not like they're helping other teams try to make up the deficit. They pay luxary tax and contribute to revenue sharing, yet most other teams pocket it. Hell, until his death this past year, the owner of the Twins was the richest owner in major league baseball.
The Yankees make their money, and put it back right on the field for the fans. It's not their fault that other teams can't say the same. - Gazthrak, on 10/18/2009, -0/+2I don't know how you can deride Girardi. At worst his decisions were questionable, not horrible.
- made2k, on 10/18/2009, -0/+2there's the fuentes that i remember from colorado ;)
- bstepanian, on 10/18/2009, -7/+8still hoping for a freeway world series...
- jabuck, on 10/18/2009, -8/+9The Yankees won even though Girardi was trying his hardest to lose it.

- MrTarHeel, on 10/18/2009, -4/+5yeah the high payroll is terrible for Baseball, it takes a team like the Rays 10+ years of losing to get enough good draft picks to compete for one year, until the Yankees, and Red Sox buy all their players. and as an Oriole fan i knew from the start that we had no chance at Mark Teixeira.
- LomasLou, on 10/18/2009, -1/+2The New York Yankees announced Sunday that they will open the Stadium Field Level and Great Hall to the public to watch the broadcast of Game 3 of the American League Championship Series from Anaheim on Monday, October 19.
- desiprince1212, on 10/18/2009, -2/+2Sometimes I wish I was a Yankees fan to just feel that last night..
- zeebo, on 10/18/2009, -5/+5No, the Yankee's payroll is not good for the league or for fans. When the whole sport revolves around a small number of dominant teams, it lessens the interest in many of the markets that may not be as lucrative. There is little incentive for the Royals for instance to spend anything close to what the Yankees spend (even if they could) simply because being in a smaller market they have no way of getting back anything close to the amount of money the Yankees will given a similar season.
Baseball either needs to come up with a scheme to make it possible for the smaller market teams to be competitive through salary caps, revenue sharing, or some other balancing scheme. Or they need to do some contraction of the Major Leagues and create a AAAA system for the teams that simply cannot compete in terms of their budget. - Gazthrak, on 10/18/2009, -3/+3If the Yankees were pulling runs like they did in the 40s and 50s, then maybe you would have a case where money buys championships, but they are not. In fact starting in 2000, there have been a wide swath of teams that have made it to the WS. Red Sox won in 04 and 07 with the 2nd highest payroll and roided players each time. I don't see anyone complaining there. I know i didn't. It's not the Yankees fault that a team like the Marlins can win 2 championships and immediately trade all the players that got you there the following year, making sure that your stands stay empty (Yes, I understand the demographics of Florida baseball working against them but you have to admit that it seems the Marlins aren't even trying to keep a fan base).
Hell, in 92 and 93 the Blue Jays won with the top payrolls buying marquee players in each year such as Alomar, Carter and Ricky Henderson but no one accused them of buying championships. - vb7prog, on 10/18/2009, -2/+2Nice to see yankees can only beat the angels with a player who abuse(d) steroids. Baseball should ban players caught using these substances.
- Switch3130, on 10/21/2009, -0/+0Whether his off-season steroid scare or his injury earlier in the season he's really pulling through in the playoffs. I'm not a Yankee fan, but I hope the Yankees win the World Series because a few players on that team all deserve word series ring including this man.
- StreakyBacon19, on 10/18/2009, -3/+2You just can't blame the Yankees for being in a big market. Other teams sign ridiculous contracts too. It's just how the modern game is. Both Florida teams are perfect examples of how the little guys can compete with New York, Boston and Los Angeles. The Marlins draft smart and put together really good teams every couple of years. The Rays have been a joke for years, but once good management was put in place, they turned around really quick, made it to the World Series and should have competed for it again this year. There has been a great variety of teams in the WS this decade. You're complaining about something which doesn't manifest itself in the real world as much as you'd like to think.
PS I don't live in New York City anymore, but when I did, I got Yankee tickets for 30 bucks, at the new stadium. They were decent seats close to home plate... The high ticket prices is an overblown story if you ask me. - cdw1212, on 10/18/2009, -4/+2This headline should have been cut off after the verb.
