- CB810, on 07/12/2009, -0/+29I'm proud of Wakefield. He has been making batters look silly for years now. I bet that this is not his last All-Star game...
- amnesiac87, on 07/13/2009, -0/+19Dugg for him being a one trick pony that makes that trick work its ass off for him.
P.S.: That's a compliment - cptcliche, on 07/12/2009, -0/+15Go knuckleballers!
- justinbaker, on 07/13/2009, -0/+14for the catcher there are 3 techniques to catching a knuckle ball, unfortunately none of them work
- nickrct, on 07/13/2009, -0/+10Hope to see Wake in a Sox uni for years to come. As the old saying goes, the only thing keeping knuckleballers from pitching is when they can no longer cover 1st base.
- STPZ, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10More wins in a Red Sox uniform than Cy Young or Rodger Clemens who tied at 192 and at 42 is still going strong
- RyeBrye, on 07/13/2009, -0/+8No way Boston would ever release or trade Wakefield. He's going to die (or retire) a Red Sox for sure.
- DjOverEZ, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7The knuckleball is one of those things where the more you know about it, the more you realize you know nothing about it.
- dsmith5237, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7Dugg for being a good read.
- bwonder, on 07/13/2009, -2/+8He was perfect through around seven innings earlier this season. The NESN camera that looks right over the shoulder of the pitcher shows the best angle of how it moves... WOW how it moves. Still, I'd rather face Tim than some 99MPH fireballer.
- Bender, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6I know Stan Cliburn personally and he has nothing but great things to say about Wakefield. Because of that, Wakefield has always been one of my favorite players.
- Red1000, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6It's sad that he's part of a dying breed. It's hard to believe that the Washington Senators used to have an entire rotation of knuckleballers. Now there's only 2 in the whole league and the other is hardly noteworthy. When he retires I'm going to miss seeing batters flail at his lobs.
- yeeaauuh, on 07/12/2009, -4/+9Charlie Hough could probably still pitch.
- LokiStix, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5If there was anything equivalent to tenure in professorship, Wake deserves it on the Sox. Sure he has his off years, but he's relatively consistent. This year was a pleasant surprise.
- stevedriskill, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5As a Yanks fan, I have nothing but respect for Tim Wakefield. I throw knuckleballs to my kids when they get high and mighty about how good they can hit. Seriously, as a fan of the game first, Tim Wakefiled has earned it, and I thought so years ago.
- boozinf, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6... it is, however, his first. I remember when he threw for the Pirates in the playoffs as a rookie back in 1992. Finally, something good to feel about in baseball after the Asterisk Era.
- CptBuck, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Wakey is fantastic, and the best thing about a knuckleballer is that they can basically pitch til they die.
- xalax, on 07/13/2009, -2/+5I like the story... But the Pirates never made it to the World Series in 1992... They losted in the NLCS to the Atlanta Braves
- DickyT83, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Damn you, Aaron Boone.
- travisgriggs, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Yeah man. What a fantastic story. Seems like there's a life lesson in there somewhere... Something about lemons and lemonaid?
I need those every now and then. - oseymour, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I have a lot of respect for how he plays the game and how he supports the community off it. Well deserved all star selection.
- Kriegg, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Being the only knuckleballer in the majors atm shows how hard it is to throw this pitch. I remember watching Wakefield pitch against the Braves years ago when he was with the Pirates, and I remember him giving us fits at the plate. I remembered Don Slaught's oversized pizza glove and the fact that he couldn't really catch the ball, he basically all he could do to knock it down. I wish the article mentioned him working with the Niekros and what he learned from them.
- MothBoy, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I think he is one of those players who had his name expunged from the record books for cheating. That is probably why you haven't heard of him.
He may have been decent at one time, but nobody really remembers nor cares. - TruEKuma, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I'm a yankees fan. Have been all my life, but Tim Wakefield has always been a pitcher I respected.
Why?
I don't know I couldn't really tell you, it could be because he was always a guy that stayed under the radar, it could be because of his wicked knuckleball. Whatever it is, its good to see such an old guy doing good in the MLB. - PhoenixTx, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Wakefield rocks. MLB needs more knuckleball pitchers!
Pitchers would certainly extend their career if they're learn it. - dafragsta, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Well. Obviously people like logins.
- RedSoxNation71, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1 In a time of steroids and over sized athletes it is nice to see an average guy that always puts his team first have success! Everyone in Boston is proud of you Wake!
- cptcliche, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1What is the best was to catch a knuckleball?
Wait for it to stop rolling then go over and pick it up - p0lack99, on 07/13/2009, -0/+0bugmenot.com
