- cwgannon, on 07/07/2008, -0/+27It's good to see a small-market team like Milwaukee making a deal like this with the aim of making a run at the playoffs. Having lost their young ace Yovani Gallardo to a knee injury, this move will help remedy some of the woes of their starting rotation as well as it will keep the bullpen just a bit more fresh. Anybody who's seen the Brewers the last few years knows that their bats are plenty sound and that it is pitching more oft than not that does them in. (See last week's meltdown against the Diamondbacks.)
- rabidg00se, on 07/07/2008, -0/+16I mean, it's in the baseball section. Since you're not interested (and completely unaware of the existence of baseball as a sport, apparently), disable it.
- delmar14, on 07/07/2008, -2/+15I have never been more excited to be a brewers fan in my life. Tied for 1st in the N.L. wild card and rapidly approaching the cubs. I would love to see a Brew Crew vs. Rays World Series...
- cbergstrom, on 07/07/2008, -0/+9Baseball, actually. :P
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+9I also randomly click on articles that make no sense to me. And since they make no sense to me, I whine and bitch about it in a comment that I am sure everyone will care about.
/sarcasm - Ne007, on 07/07/2008, -0/+8Don't get too excited. I'm an Indians fan and watched him lose every post season start he made last season. The man is not an ace in my opinion.
I don't know the prospects the Indians received, but I think they made the right move. - bullox, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7I can tell that you've never been to a Brewers game.
- funnick, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7As an Indians fan I'm pissed. Not that they were going to climb out of that hole this year but I just get frustrated when good players are not pursued. It happens to us all the time in Cleveland. At least he wasn't our only good starting pitcher this time around.
- bullox, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7It's hard to say the Brewers overpaid for Sabathia when the team that LaPorta played for, the AA Huntsville Stars, still has NINE all stars without LaPorta. The Brewers minor leagues are stacked once again, and the cupboard is still far from bare after this trade.
- lordmike, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Would you rather that C.C. make half of the entire payroll, severely limiting us in getting other players? Yeah, it sucks that the Dolans are tightwads, but this was the right move, especially since C.C. is rather erratic when the pressure is on (i.e. postseason), and only plays once a week... He's not worth half the payroll... Let some other team deal with him being a headache!
- bullox, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Nah, I totally forgot the first 17 years of my life as a Brewers fan.
- FearlessFreep, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Isn't that some sorta sign of the Apocalypse?? Brews/Rays World Series
- UnglueD, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6The brewers know this, and will gladly accept the compensation picks they will recieve, as CC is a Type-A free agent.
The teams that are likely to afford his contract will be the large market teams, who usually finish in the top 15. A team who finishes with their record in the top 15 and signs a Type-A free agent loses their first round pick.
If both Sheets and Sabathia do not sign next year, the brewers will receive 6 picks in the top 60 (AT LEAST) in the 2009 draft. There is a chance that both might go to top 15 teams, and the brewers would recieve 5 of the top 35 draft picks. - NeoCortex, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5Only if it's a Brews/Rays World Series and somehow the Cubs win.
- macromorgan, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5What cap?
- awtripp, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5Yeah, they only switched over 11 years ago.
- incognit0, on 07/07/2008, -4/+9It'll be pretty hard to watch them at Wrigley when they don't even make the payoffs.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5And when the Cubs choke and bomb, they'll blame it on a goat.
***** Cubs fans. - UnglueD, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Still have Fielder for this year and 3 more. No big hurry there. On top of that, could stick Mat Gamel (AA 3rd baseman whos offensive stats are better in every category, except a few HRs, than LaPorta's) at first
- nofx1510, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3The brewers are announcing the trade today. Please stop talking.
Douche. - alpha19, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Sometimes I never make it into the ballpark because of the beer in the parking lot... ha.
- mulletmusketeer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Plus, their outfield is looking pretty clutch with Braun and Hart, so LaPorta really did not have too many places to play
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Look at the bright side, at least you're not an A's fan.
:( - UnglueD, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3No problem. LaPorta+ was a lot to give up, don't get me wrong (especially if the PTBNL is Taylor Green, whos showing a lot of promise in A ball). However, the brewers have built their team through the draft, and have a incredibly deep minor league system.
Time will tell how this turns out, as 6 years of potential all star will most likely be worth more than the 2+ months of CC. - Nlewis4, on 07/07/2008, -2/+5countdown to sabathia going to the yankees
- abediz, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4Dude, they gave up one top 10 prospect in their system for an AL Cy Young winner. CLE got robbed. Dodgers shoulda been a bigger player.
- phydeaux70, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I don't understand why any team would deal for such a player without signing an extension as part of it. Seems to be a lot to give up for a 3 month rental.
Don't get me wrong...CC is money, he's a great pitcher. But if Milwaukee was serious about winning they would have signed him for longer than his current contract is. Regardless of the Cubs ability to lose this doesn't make sense to me.
But...the rest of the AL Central has to like it a lot. - imashmuck, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Hmmm, thanks for the info. I didn't know Fielder still had 4 years left on his deal. shmuck = mistaken.
- Xyloscope, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2A rental is the only way teams outside large markets can compete in baseball as it is today. Absent a salary cap, teams like the Brewers need to make deals like this when they get the opportunity. There is no way the Brewers could sign a pitcher of CC's calibur on an open market against the likes of New York, Chicago, or LA, and pitchers know that they'll strike it rich in free agency. The Brewers cannot afford to overpay for talent. Further, considering the Brewers AA class affiliate was sending 10 representatives to their All-Star game, depth of prospects is hardly an issue. The Brewers didn't part with more solid prospects in Escobar or Gamel, so I think it was a GREAT move for the Brewers.
LaPorta should be a good big-leaguer, but considering Brewers' ability to draft well, there's also something to be said for losing Sabathia after the season. A loss of a type-A free-agent means 2 compensatory draft picks in next year's MLB draft. The Brewers are likely to lose Sheets and Sabathia, both type-A's. Coupled with their first-round pick, the Brewers would be drafting 5 of the first 35 available players. Remember, LaPorta was only picked in last year's draft. With 5 cracks at it in the first 35 picks, I think the Brewers will be just fine.
The Brewers are serious about winning right now. The fact that they've taken this risk shows that they really believe their time is now. I love this team! - chrisgeleven, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2The Brewers are a good story this year. It would be nice to see them go deep in the playoffs. Good starting pitching is the most important thing to have in the playoffs and now they have two aces (Sheets and Sabathia).
- jgs6, on 07/07/2008, -2/+4I think the Brewers really have a shot this year and if not, definitely next year...
I can say one thing for the Cubs, they've consistently sucked for the past 100 years.
...bring on the buries - bullox, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Pending paperwork and physicals, it's a done deal. Check out CC Sabathia's personal website, he's already wearing a Brewers jersey, albeit a photoshopped one.
- midejitsu, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Sheets is definitely gone after this season. Speculation is that they won’t sign C.C. and just offer arbitration. Since he’s going to be a type-a free agent that means the Brewers would get two supplementary first round draft picks. Same if Sheets leaves. Four picks for the Brewers is a big deal, because their scouting is excellent.
- Yuska, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Teams in the Top 15 lose their first round pick if they sign a Type A? Wtf? Since when?
- Yuska, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1CC and Sheets will leave this offseason, don't worry, your team will be back to mediocrity soon.
EDIT: Woops, replied to the wrong person, thats aimed @ Benny - Yuska, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1@incognito:
Yah, those payoffs sure are tough to make. - jepizacar, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1nice resource....

http://jeniya.info - Paal, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1dude, that's sort of the point, they NEED to make a run NOW... because who knows if Fielder is goign to stick around after his contract is up.
- abediz, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1The brewers are going for broke here. Now they have CC and Sheets as free agents this winter. CC makes, what? 13 starts? I don't think its enough.
- 1dog, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1They are in first place already in the wild card race.
- WaltJay, on 07/07/2008, -3/+4Well, Cleveland has officially given up on the season. I'm glad to see C.C. out of the AL.
GO SOX! - inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Then they'll just need four more starters to compliment him.
- charbo187, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1you do realize that this small market team will never be able to afford CC after the season is over and they are only renting him?
- Barackalypse, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Why does his very first sentence mention their last place standing 6 weeks ago, when right now they're second in the NL Central with a 49-39 record and a mere 3.5 games behind the Cubs? Why oh why do journalists insist on reporting things in a way so as to make them seem more relevant or important than they are? Later in his article he states their current situation and pretty much renders his opening statement irrelevant.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1too little too late? Or will this be the final piece of the puzzle? Either way - this a a great deal - now I hope they can sign him long term and add him to my favorite pitcher. Ben sheets!
- zioxide, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1How has Cleveland given up? Last I checked, they still have the favorite for the 2008 Cy Young (Cliff Lee) and 17 game winner last year Fausto Carmona.
- zioxide, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Now he can hit more 440ft home runs.
- cadmiumpaint, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1er i meant luxury tax and all that.....so used to talking about basketball...=)
- BigKopp, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1As good as this trade is for the Brewers, I'm a little surprised that the Indians didn't wait until near the deadline to see if they'd get a better offer. Don't get me wrong, they got a potential stud in LaPorta, but outside of that there are a bunch of question marks, and I would think more teams would be willing to part with more talent near the deadline.
- 1dog, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1When he signs with another team the Brewers will be awarded two number picks in next years draft. They won't be able to sign Ben Sheets either, so they'll get another two number one picks in the draft for him...
However this will be the first time the Brewers have ever drawn over 3 million fans in a year. -
