- C4Strife, on 06/28/2009, -1/+18Video footage of Lou Gehrig's speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4msaZTJrTA
- Blinker1315, on 06/28/2009, -0/+15I can't think of another more poignant moment in baseball history. Gehrig, of course, wasn't a saint--who is--but after all these years he remains, along with Jackie Robinson, as the paragon of courage in baseball. The video of that speech--which my uncles and mother saw live--is still chilling.
- hankthedwarf, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13There are very few, if any, class acts like him anymore. And the ones that ARE class acts are drowned out by the sports media focusing on the spoiled, selfish players.
- DrVic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+970 years later his speech makes me tear up and I am only 28 years old.
To all you people out there that cry about you cell phone plans and the fact your TV is only 720p. This is what a man is. Take notes. - martoq, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9When baseball was baseball and players played for something more than $.
- DrVic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6no
- Boilerup8986, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6It makes him tear up because he has a soul. It's hard to hear this and not be moved.
- jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5You're right. It's not inpirational. However, I think it might be considered inspirational.
- lex0429, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4he may not have been a saint, most baseball players arent, but at least he wasnt as big an ***** as Ty Cobb.
one of the most touching, sports/life related speeches of all time. that and Jim Valvano's speech at the ESPY's - NYConcepts, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4He was a Yankee!
- abeewon, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4id like to add the hank aaron run around the bases when he hit the record breaker. that is just fantastic, no steroids included
- jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Old New York is the one place I'd like to live in most. Time travel me and have me born in 1890 and live out all my days in New York. It would be stunning.
- jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5HEY BILLY MAYS HERE FOR GTFO.
- vbullinger, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4In case anyone's wondering, mcsenget is only quoting Norm McDonald during a Saturday Night Live skit. An exhaustive, 30 second search of the video on Google/YouTube led to no results, so I gave up.
- gooddarts, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4As performed by Norm Macdonald on SNL (Season 25, Episode 3, 10/23/1999 - Great Moments in Yankee History) according to snltranscripts.jt.org.
- Anubis2051, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4I miss that echo at the new park...
- Rhodamine, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3How could it not be?
- vbullinger, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3The most interesting thing about that run around the bases? You know those two young guys that ran onto the field and patted him on the back? Hank had gotten so many death threats (for being a black guy beating Babe Ruth's record) that they had snipers pointing right at those two young guys patting him on the back. They were trained right on them. If they showed any inclination toward violence, they'd've been killed on the spot.
Saw it on Sportscenter around the time when Bonds was about to break his record. - PhillyMJS, on 06/29/2009, -2/+4Fun fact: If you have two Sprint phones with direct connect, the delay between them perfectly matches the PA system echo in the video of him making the speech.
- Rhodamine, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2This could be a litmus test for Diggers. I could be construed as either Yankee fann (dug up) or foe (dug down)
- Schda, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1For a large portion of his career he played alongside Babe Ruth and other great hitters. Rather than be upset about not being the spot light, or complaining about not getting recognition he just kept playing and doing the best he can. He played through many injuries and sickness but just kept going and was just a plain unassuming guy.
Compare that to someone like Ty Cobb who seemed to delight in the pain of others. He would jump into the stands to attack spectators who hazed him, assaulted a groundskeeper at one point, then choked the groundskeepers wife when she intervened, then started fighting his own teammates when they tried to stop him.
If you have even a passing interest in baseball (I like to go to the ocasional game, but I don't really watch it on TV) and would like to know more check out the Ken Burns documentary simply entitled baseball: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/baseball/ It's up for rental on Netflix. It's a fascinating series and I'm only up to the mid 1940s or so. It's very interesting to see how the game developed and some of it's history, and to see why people like Honus Wagner are famous, not just for a baseball card, but for being an outstanding player. - mcsenget, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2http://snltranscripts.jt.org/99/99clougehrig.phtml
- jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2A sad sick man doesn't make a class act guy. I am not very familiar with Gehrig. Can you please tell me what he was all about that made him a class act? I'm not being an ass. Please don't take it like I'm challenging you. I just want to hear what a true Gehrig fan from the old days thinks.
- shooperbtard, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Poor Lou Gehrig. Died of a disease that had his name. Shoulda seen that coming.
- jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1False.
- DiggMeUpPlz, on 06/29/2009, -1/+0well go GTFO then
- mcsenget, on 06/29/2009, -7/+5Today.. I consider myself.. the luckiest man.. on the face.. of the earth. [ crowd cheers ] I was being sarcastic! I'm unlucky! I may be the unluckiest man.. on the face.. of the earth! I have a disease.. so rare.. they named it after me. Yeah, lucky me! [ crowd cheers harder ] You people are hopeless! [ storms off the field ]
- DiggMeUpPlz, on 06/29/2009, -2/+0pussy?
- YagLana, on 06/29/2009, -5/+2I heard a supposedly famous story on the radio about how someone had an encounter at a bar with him that went something like this:
"Wow, Lou Gehrig, you are my greatest hero! I even named my son after you!"
To which he responded...
"Get the ***** out of here."
Any truth behind this? - jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -4/+1HEY HOW DARE YOU. TOO SOON. I MEAN SERIOUSLY MAN.
/S - DiggMeUpPlz, on 06/29/2009, -9/+5Way better digg than some guy named billy mays or something...
- kyleharr10, on 06/29/2009, -7/+2a person's speech doesn't just become un inpirational. You could say that about every great American "200 years later and Abe lincoln's speach still inspires" wtf
- jordanlgta, on 06/29/2009, -7/+1It's a great speech for sure, and he says great things.
But I have no idea why it makes you tear up? I know I'll get dugg down for asking why. I mean it's not that terribly gut-wrenching. It's extremely tame. Problems in your own life? Just asking. Not being an ass.

What is Digg?
