- p3ngwin, on 01/10/2008, -6/+51this is excellent news.
more people need to realize that a car is not supposed to be a 2nd house with all the creature comforts and cost a fortune. it's a transport method for you and maybe some items.
india can't afford to have the west's massive and inefficient cars, so it's good that the crowded cities get the chance to have an affordable car that gets good millage and can serve it's purpose well for those who have a little money and don't want to think about spending $30,000 or ***** knows how much on a vehicle.
hopefully the country won't develop and follow the west's propensity for consumption and greed ending up with "more, more, more" fever.
stay focused on what the item was needed for and use it efficiently to reach the next goal on the path to happiness, THE ITEM IS NOT THE GOAL! - mypreciousss, on 01/10/2008, -3/+46It doesn't mention this on the Jalopnik page, but news reports say the following:
- It complies with Euro IV emission norms and runs cleaner than most motorcycles on sale in India
- It averages 50mpg (20km/liter or 4.5L/100km)
- It's made of steel, not fiberglass
- It has only one windshield wiper! - mypreciousss, on 01/10/2008, -3/+32Submitter might be from a European country (such as France) which uses the decimal point as the digit separator.
- hmugabe, on 01/10/2008, -9/+35i've seen better tatas
- kimondo, on 01/10/2008, -6/+22Really nice, now thousands of people can buy cars rather than cycle, creating more pollution and traffic problems.... so many cities would be better off without any cars at all!
- milkmage, on 01/10/2008, -2/+18and insomniac doesn't know that decimals are used instead of commas in European countries.
- ColorBlind, on 01/10/2008, -2/+17I see all of you complaining but look at the price.I wouldn't even have to take a loan out on that thing!!! I currently own a motorcycle for around town commuting to save on gas. I'll be honest, I'd drive the hell out of that thing if I could. I would feel a bit more safe and could also drive it on rainy days as well. If something similar to that ever comes to america, I will definitely be on the waiting list to own one.
- akkibaba, on 01/10/2008, -1/+16A lot of Indian families of 3-4 people travel on a single motorcycle as their primary form of transport. A car like this, while not as safe as what a western consumer might expect, is still far safer than a motorcycle. That is the point of the car.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -0/+14highway connecting work and suburbs are American concepts. In European and Indian city where you are stuck in traffic and barely go above 30M this thing is great and due to its size you could zip in and out of traffic and get to your destination faster then in a gas guzzling suv.

another small car in the making and it sells for $3000. looks much better though! this one is done by an Indian motorbike manufacturer who are venturing into the small car business. - inactive, on 01/10/2008, -0/+13American norms suck ass. This thing meets Euro Norms and they are far superior then American Norms.
- GoingPostal, on 01/10/2008, -15/+28Does it have that new curry smell?
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+13i bet you are the kind who over compensate.
- dubbleenerd, on 01/10/2008, -1/+12the negative comments here and on the original site make me sad - cars in India are driven much less frequently and over fewer miles in their lifetime as compared to cars in the US - so the "world polluter" comments need to take a hike. This car (like most others now in India) meet or exceed Euro IV emission norms, so they are as clean as the ones hitting the roads in Europe. With this kind of mileage, this class of cars will pump hardly any CO2 into the air compared to the tubs that some people drive here in the US.
- sum33t, on 01/10/2008, -2/+12At least this car wont roll over from a slight turn
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -10/+19Small cars can be just as safer, or safer than some of the behemoths that North American's drive.
- Acewrap, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8You've obviously never met my ex-wife.
- FadeNoMore, on 01/10/2008, -4/+12cheapest production car in the world!
- Tmac90, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9But can you have sex in it?
- Topher06, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9The last time a country made "the people's car", they invaded most of Europe.
- Linkin4, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Hope you have a midget fetish
- Stuart750, on 01/10/2008, -2/+9Small is not big, small is small and big is big
- unbreakable, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Same as the number of pigs that fit in your car
- dynamited, on 01/10/2008, -1/+8Thats a smart move from TATA. They identified the market... and they produced a product which the market can afford. 10/10 in my books. This is obviously not a replacement for your 'usual car'.... but hey... it hits the budget for the budget conscious. Just imagine the crash the second/used car market is going to suffer there.
I hope TATAs resellers dont hike the price up.. defeating the original affordable idea. - dubbleenerd, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Euro IV is an emission standard while brufleth is talking about safety requirements, which may be true. I wish I could buy this car though :)
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+8if those tyres can survive on Indian roads, they can run well off anywhere.
- luvgroovesalad, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7I have been telling my friends for years we don't need all the new electronic ***** in cars. It is just more things that can break, which is what the auto makers reall want, yet another revenue source. I now drive a 1969 VW bug, runs like a champ, and gets about 30 to 35 miles a gallon... and the ladies love it...
- darwinwin, on 06/18/2009, -1/+7If it performs on Indian roads, it can perform well on any other road.
- Konrad9, on 01/10/2008, -1/+750mpg!
***** my mazda3, I want one of these. - inactive, on 01/10/2008, -3/+9in india they have a baby born every two seconds, which means someone somewhere in india is getting it every second of the day. so i would say yes.
- SeBBBe, on 01/10/2008, -1/+7I agree. This looks like a serious design while the Smart looks like a Fischer Price toy.
- thomashauk, on 01/10/2008, -0/+6Cities much?
- Chompy, on 01/10/2008, -4/+10No, they cannot. It's simple physics. I drive a small car, I agree that everyone should, but attempting to spread disinformation strikes me as disingenious at best. If a 6000lb car and a 1500lb car hit each other, the 6000lb car is going to keep more of it's momentum. Less deceleration=less injury.
- tuxerware, on 01/10/2008, -0/+6To bad they don't make the Lupo 3L any longer. The worlds most efficient car and the cancel it because it was to expensive to make.
- saintjason, on 01/10/2008, -1/+6I buy two, and flaunt my pair of TaTas!
- brufleth, on 01/10/2008, -0/+5I had to check but yeah, I said safety requirements. As in not killing everyone in a minor crash.
- Gaya2081, on 01/10/2008, -3/+7How fast can it go? I have to drive on the highway to work.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+575Miles is the top spedd but the problem is that the ball bearing have a operation limit of 45Miles so if you drive this above 45Miles you will face a lot of wear in the wheels.
- Norina, on 01/10/2008, -1/+5I would argue with the submitter that the car doesn't look like a Smart (except that both cars are very small) and that the Smart's design is a lot more sophisticated than that of the Nano.
Also, 4.5L/100KM isn't extremely impressive. VW's Lupo is capable of 3L/100KM. So I wouldn't say that the "West" only has inefficient cars like p3ngwin is suggesting. - ChronicColonic, on 01/10/2008, -4/+8Oh good...it's a hatchback. I will buy two and wear them as skates.
- RomanThommassen, on 01/10/2008, -2/+6quote: 54 US miles per gallon
Damn, that's a lot. And the best part of the car with the gigh prices. - smurfz, on 01/10/2008, -6/+10Those tires are small and don't seem real reliable.
- veeracs, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4LOL! I can't beat this comment, ha ha!
- duggreen, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4I always thought the escalating arms race in automobile size was an IQ test. The idea that, "With this hummer, if I get in an accident, at least I win", could only be truth to someone with mush for brains, or at least someone who has done no research at all into the nature of accidents, and just swallows the car manufacturers (and steel industrys) propaganda about safety. Everone knows that the heavier the vehicle, the harder it is to control in 'fancy driving' situations. If you don't believe me, ask a stunt driver. I'm far less likely to crash a little toyota tercel than I am a tahoe, not to mention I'm a much smaller target and harder for you to crash into.
- bp201, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4The car has passed the EuroNCAP frontal impact, offset front impact as well as the side impact tests. Please know your facts before posting!
- crazybugger, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4I don't understand, why someone gets dugg down for giving information!

another article 'bout the car - Ineedanap, on 01/10/2008, -1/+5This isnt a ***** book, or an article- think of it more like people talking to each other- in turns...
+1 goingpostal- ftw - BoneStamp, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3For a person who is all about reliability, that is an interesting automobile choice.
