- culbeda, on 03/22/2008, -1/+2From what I've been told by Russian friends, several people die every year fishing on the ice and having the ice break off while they're on it. If you were the first, I doubt anyone would think too little of you, but this happens year after year after year. People know it happens and they risk it anyway.
- iticu, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1By that logic we should stop driving..

- exaakax, on 03/22/2008, -26/+2That must be so common in ice-cold countries like Russia
- MikeonTV, on 03/22/2008, -5/+12"ice-cold countries"?
- alphaterminus, on 03/22/2008, -1/+11It's also common in Minnesota.
My memory of ice fishing in Minnesota... my dad and his friends were drinking rum the whole time and felt warm. I was 12 and drinking Coke and was freezing my balls off the whole time.- shady1630, on 03/22/2008, -1/+2Should've accepted their offer!
- tehawesome531, on 03/22/2008, -0/+3I'm in Minnesota as well and there were people driving on our lake in my backyard last week. It was probably in the 50s, Im surprised none of them ended up breaking the ice.
- MikeonTV, on 03/22/2008, -5/+12"ice-cold countries"?
- Accolade1, on 03/22/2008, -3/+99"Don't worry - I've got plenty of parking."
- culbeda, on 03/22/2008, -0/+3They used to drive a car out on to a frozen lake every year up in Wisconsin so they could take bets as to when it would fall through the ice in the spring. Imagine visiting and seeing a wide open lot with one car on it...

- iBenzin, on 03/22/2008, -22/+10the heat from the car itself probably melted the ice..
- whataboutdave, on 03/22/2008, -4/+63or the weight of almost a dozen cars might have done it....
- Agger, on 03/22/2008, -18/+1since when did weight MELT ice?
Ofc it was the heat from the cars.- Acglaphotis, on 03/22/2008, -0/+23come on... you figured out how to get to digg but you don't know that weight BREAKS ice?
- itsgotyou, on 03/22/2008, -0/+19not when you go on dates
- mithrasinvictus, on 03/22/2008, -1/+11weight MELTS ice. Water has a lower freezing point under greater pressure.
- dualityim, on 03/22/2008, -2/+2Pressure != weight.
- H1tchh1k3r, on 03/22/2008, -1/+4I bet he pressed random keys on his mommies computer
- alex7575, on 03/22/2008, -0/+4dualityim,
I'll use water pressure to explain this, the deeper in water you are, the higher the pressure, right? That is because the deeper you are, there is more water above you, the more water above you... the more weight... - oneoverzero, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1pressure = weight/area
well, force/area really... they're the same thign. - uremomsnitemare, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1@ oneoverzero
no they aren't
- itsthebrod, on 03/22/2008, -0/+5Yep. Ice is an incredible mystery to scientists because it can only break when it melts. If it's cold enough, it can support an infinite amount of weight. Amazing indeed...
- Acglaphotis, on 03/22/2008, -0/+23come on... you figured out how to get to digg but you don't know that weight BREAKS ice?
- Agger, on 03/22/2008, -18/+1since when did weight MELT ice?
- pmpsta, on 03/22/2008, -13/+2Some of the cars may have been left running on purpose so the engine wouldn't freeze over, dammed if you do dammed if you don't.
- ZombieSociety, on 03/22/2008, -2/+35You're not "damned if you do and damned if you don't." You're damned if you're stupid enough to park on ice.
- JoWiGo, on 03/22/2008, -0/+5Lake Simcoe Ontario (south of some parts of the US [and not just Alaska]) - we often park on the ice to go out ice fishing. In fact we do not have enough room for ice fishing parking without allocating space on the ice. You're damned if you're stupid enough to park on THIN ice, it is common practice to park on ice.
- elnerdo, on 03/22/2008, -2/+1Ice fishing is probably the least intelligent 'sport' in the world. You're damned if you go ice fishing to begin with.
- JoWiGo, on 03/22/2008, -0/+5Lake Simcoe Ontario (south of some parts of the US [and not just Alaska]) - we often park on the ice to go out ice fishing. - stupidStan, on 03/22/2008, -1/+13dammed if you can't spell damned
- yacks, on 03/22/2008, -0/+5well you'd be dammed if you were a body of water behind a damn dam.
- RedViper1999, on 03/22/2008, -0/+6IF it was cold enough to freeze the engine blocks then it was cold enough that the ice would have been much thicker in the first place. Temperatures in the single digits and negatives freeze water damn quick and that's also when you tend to need to warm the engine.

- almightyzam, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I wanted to put a lot of emphasis on "have", just to make the point clear that his grammar is horrendous.

- CoolWind, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1It may have been a road that flooded. And the cars weren't recently driven to where they are parked. And they didn't enter the 'lake' from the bank next to where they are parked.
- dhughes, on 03/22/2008, -0/+3 Yes around these parts we also call long lakes with flowing water a "river".

wake up, more snow is just more precipitation, which is a result of global warming, and it's currently in the process of ***** over mankind. i just hope people like you are first in line.- strictnein, on 03/22/2008, -0/+19The midwest has never flooded in the history of mankind. - strictnein, on 03/22/2008, -2/+12No see, that's also caused by "climate change". They changed the name so they can blame absolutely anything they want on it.

- blast_flame, on 03/22/2008, -1/+15I doubt this has anything to do with global warming. Just stupidity.
- Nick22, on 03/22/2008, -0/+4So what your saying is several tonnes of meal sitting ontop of a sheet of ice, which is only supported by water, is in fact NOT the cause of this incident, but rather global warming is?
get over yourself - smurfsahoy, on 03/22/2008, -0/+3Please seek education.
- Cryoniq, on 03/22/2008, -0/+2Please even go seek a cure for your retardness.
- ozydingo, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1Let's not jump to conclusions, yah? This is probably why so many people think global warming is just a hype (not addressing the veracity of that here), because it is too often seen where people take one simple observation and try to necessarily connect it to a larger thing which might have nothing to do with the observation.
- Syphon8, on 03/22/2008, -7/+17It's Easter Weekend and it's snowing outside. Where's your global warming now?

- itsthebrod, on 03/22/2008, -0/+2Cars are airtight when their windows are closed! That's why whenever I'm on a long car drive, I make sure and stop every 10 minutes to open my doors and get fresh air in...
- Strikersgun, on 03/22/2008, -3/+0no its just that alot less water will get in
- strictnein, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1Watch the Mythbusters episode when they drop the car into the pool. The windows, doors, everything are closed, and the car fills up with water very very quickly. At about the rate that it's being submerged.

- sealyons, on 03/22/2008, -6/+1Now, I would think it was quite amusing if that happened to one, MAYBE two cars, just an idiot or something, but to ALL those people's cars? That's hilarious. It's funny that like 30 people or more all parked on a frozen lake NEXT TO EACH OTHER thinking nothing would happen..you would think there wouldnt be that many people stupid enough to do it..
- Brinskee, on 03/22/2008, -7/+1Uhh... fish... in that brown water? Okay...
- whazup911, on 03/22/2008, -1/+3uhhh... fish.... in the polluted ocean? okay....
- smurfsahoy, on 03/22/2008, -0/+7Have you ever actually been fishing before?
Crystal clear lakes = pollution, and no fish. If it were a river, then there might be fish when it is clear. Not for a lake.- Brinskee, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I grew up fishing in FL. Clear lakes are clean lakes and have tons of fish. Some of the lakes are actually brown, but the water is very clean, the brown comes from cypress trees basically dying the water. I don't see any cypress trees in that water... it just looks really unhealthy.

- Invalice, on 03/22/2008, -0/+10It is normal for some parts of Russia it is normal to use frozen rivers as roads or in this case a car park.
- smurfsahoy, on 03/22/2008, -6/+2That just means that lots of people are stupid
- JoWiGo, on 03/22/2008, -0/+11Yes. It is also common in the northern US and most parts of Canada. I have done it myself. In fact many of the northern Canadian diamond mines are mainly accessible via the Dempster Highway during the winter months, a 194km highway built mostly over ice.
- Mutton, on 03/22/2008, -2/+2But is it normal?
- CheLives, on 03/22/2008, -8/+3hahaha, gotta love the "Invest in Russia" ad at the bottom... Invest in these retards? Doubtful.

- VladislavIII, on 03/22/2008, -5/+41Where y'all from anyway? California? Texas? Or do you think you know about cold weather because you live in Chicago? You people don't know ***** all about cold winters. I love all of these ignorant comments here like "who would be stupid enough to park on ice lol". This ice looks pretty rotten but anybody who's lives up north is used to driving cars across frozen lakes and rivers in winter. They have ice bridges that 18 wheelers cross all the time. The ice is typically at least 6-8 feet thick in winter and even 24 inches would be plenty to drive a car on. Running your engine wouldn't even warm the very top layer.
- Cryoniq, on 03/22/2008, -0/+15Affirmative. Being a Swede this is something natural. They just got unlucky.. a lot.. he he
- Fatcheeseguy, on 03/22/2008, -16/+3who would be stupid enough to park on ice lol

- JoWiGo, on 03/22/2008, -0/+3Thank you. My thoughts exactly. These people either suffered from an early ice breakup, parking too early, or the ice was still moving.
- Verytastycheese, on 03/22/2008, -2/+2Agreed, but that ice is see through on the first pic... they should have noticed the weather. This particular group was clearly retarted... that or there was a sewage pipe flowing under them.
- Azselendor, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1One word: Vodka
- Radan, on 03/22/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the first thing that popped into my mind when I read this article was the march across the Belts, where the entire Swedish army marched over the frozen sea to wage war against Denmark. When it's seriously freaking cold, ice can be pretty strong. However, looking at those pictures, how anyone could think that, that would hold is beyond me.

- ffejrey, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1Even 8-10 inches of ice is enough for a car.
- FatLoser, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1That's what she said!!
- GordonV, on 03/22/2008, -2/+9So which one was your car?
- DeadFox1, on 03/22/2008, -3/+1I lol'ed
- dhughes, on 03/22/2008, -0/+4 I'm from Canada and parking or driving on ice is fine when you know it's thick enough (a few days of really cold weather) but even I wouldn't drive a vehicle on a small frozen river, the current thins the ice in the middle and ice at the edges is too thin.
- hamalicious, on 03/22/2008, -7/+1LOL.... No; for real..... "laughing out loud"
- KodomoNoJikan, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1Those big sillies
- bdpf, on 03/22/2008, -0/+66 to 10 inches is enough.. The snow and current did the dirty deed. Snow insulates the the ice from the cold and the current weakens it. Love all the experts. Live on the chain and we loose a car every few years, let alone a snowmobile. Current and active springs just eat them. Folks from the cities don't understand ice conditions, on lakes and rivers. It take several weeks of near zero weather with no thaws, to make save ice.
- TheLastFreeMan, on 03/22/2008, -2/+34MrBabyMan deserves to fall into a frozen lake.
