- winguero, on 07/07/2009, -1/+7Though the point of this article wasn't really about the Citroen car itself, but rather the new program by Zipcar, I totally get what you're saying. I feel like car designers need to justify the fact that their electric cars are things of the future or something out of the Jetsons, rather than tried and true auto design successes. Zipcar on the other hand is completely rad, and I feel like a great step in introducing the infrastructure we badly need for alternative energy-driven cars...
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5Citroën - ë = Citron = Lemon
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Zipcar includes honda civics too... for those of you that are concerned about the ugly prius..
BTW what is the price? - chronopublish, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Cliff's notes version:
It's been questioned, studies were done, it vastly reduces pollution, cars charge off-peak which actually increases the efficiency of our existing plants, 100 million cars can be supported by current infrastructure, yadda yadda yadda. - migitalwarfare, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5You're not figuring into the equation that if you need a car 1 day a week for say, driving to a job, you're only paying for the trip to your job if you scheduled it right. The 8 hours you spend in the office, someone else could be using the car. So long as you reserve the car for your morning and evening commutes, it's a much more affordable option than to own a car outright.
Brown University in Providence has a Zipcar location on campus, and every trip out to the airport that I take, I always see at least one Zipcar dropping off or picking someone up. For college kids, this is an awesome idea. You just need to realize that not everyone needs a car 24/7, and these are quite handy for the few times a car is actually needed. - thePTS, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Google the Tesla cars.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3You can use Zip Car and still think the Prius and Citroen are ugly. The two are not mutually exclusive.
- SPECOPS, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3that's $4000 a year assuming you already have the car paid in full. What about a car payment for the first 3-5 years when you purchase a new car, or 2-5k or so if you buy one outright? Let's assume the average US car payments are $380 a month, add that to your equation and you get $8560 for the first 3-5 years, then after that your $4000 would kick in - and you'd have a 3-5 year old car.
- nickaster, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Asuming you need it all day long for that one day. There's also the convenience factor. Where I live owning a car is a constant nightmare of parking tickets, looking for parking, moving the car for street cleaning, plus what if one day you need a pickup truck for moving furniture? Assuming your calculations are accurate, when you factor in these things, the Zipcar comes out waaaay ahead. (At least in my 'hood)
- Iveestyle, on 07/07/2009, -3/+6Another ugly future car! Hey maybe build a mustang all electric, or a BMW 3 series, or a Honda Civic, and keep the same shape, then you would have people driving these things!
- energyx, on 07/08/2009, -1/+3please please please don't let 'pod' come into common usage
- marx2k, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2This would be perfect for me in the winter here in Wisconsin. On non-snow days I ride my scooter or motorcycle, but if I need to haul stuff like groceries, I'd much rather use this program. I have my own car but I'd certainly sell it and use this instead.
- funkywood, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2I've been thinking Zipcar would be the perfect place to start using EVs. Most journeys are short commutes in a city well within 30kms of a charging station.
- PhairOh, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2I live in Chicago, I do not have a car in the city, and I have a Zipcar account. That account costs me $50 a year and with that I can rent a car for a few hours at a time for about $9-$14 an hour, depending on the vehicle I choose (BMWs cost more than Hondas). Gas and insurance are included in that price.
95% of the time I do not need a car as I use public transportation to get around. That means that if I had a car, was paying insurance on it, paying parking for it, paying maintenance for it, etc., that would be 95% wasted money. With Zipcar if I should need a car (that 5% of the year), I pay ~$50 and get to drive a nice clean car for a few hours for whatever it is that I need.
Your calculation may be absolutely correct for your own personal needs but for someone like myself Zipcar is absolutely perfect. - nickaster, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2it works out to about $9 an hour where I'm from - but that includes gas, insurance, everything, so it's a good deal for short rentals. A full weekend is usually best done with regular rent-a-car. I have no idea what the scoop is on these electric ones, they're only in the UK
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Too late.
- driverdave, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2obviously you don't live in a big city. do you know how much parking is in NYC?
the price of a parking spot in NYC can be more then my mortgage. - themagellan, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2I can has Hybr0d pl0x
- ImBreno, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2That is true. But for many Zipcar users (myself included), we don't drive that often. If you live in a city, buses, subways, and your own two feet are the primary ways to get around. I only take a Zipcar for random trips outside the city.
- BoonTobiasPSN, on 07/08/2009, -3/+5Ok let's compare my car vs a zipcar
Yearly
$2000 insurance
$1000 gas
~$800 repair
$200 maintenance/oil change
= 4000
And I have the car all the time.
Vs.
Get a zipcar 1 day a week = $77 x 52 = 4000 - migitalwarfare, on 07/08/2009, -1/+2Um... they've been making hybrid Civics for a while now.
- nickaster, on 07/07/2009, -2/+3What's ugly about it? I use ZipCar all the time - and do a lot of people based on the company's profitability and ambitious expansion plans.
- stevelectric, on 07/25/2009, -0/+1winguero- there is a company that preparing another solution to the electric car driving range problem in the US:
http://www.flixya.com/post/brightlights/1634671/Fr ... - cplusplus, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Even if he owns the car in full, its depreciating each day. Eventually he'll have to buy a new one.
- ImBreno, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1where I am, it's anywhere from 6.50-13.50 an hour during regular hours. That's dependent on if you want a Hybrid or a BMW or somewhere between.
After midnight and pre-6am, it's half-off. Sometimes I rent the beamer just to go for a ride around. - BoonTobiasPSN, on 07/08/2009, -0/+0The car I own is $1700, hence the repair cost was added.
This car will last 5 years easily - BoonTobiasPSN, on 07/08/2009, -0/+0Well i'm in queens
- DaWeedWizard420, on 07/08/2009, -2/+1has anybody questioned the repercussions of an all-electric American auto fleet? Even though our cars won't be polluting, the power plants will just increase pollution hundredfold to keep up with the increased demand for juice.
