Your New Tires Could Be Six-Year Old Death Traps

consumerist.com — Those "new" tires of yours could be six-years old and ready to disintegrate. Tire rubber dries out after six years, but unlike in Europe and Asia, American companies are allowed to sell expired tires long after they turn into death donuts. An investigation found that the "new" tires on sale at Sears and Walmart can be up to 12-years old.

    I worked as a tire salesman for 4 years to pay my way through college. It payed decent, and was actually fun interacting with customers on something so basic, but so important when you think about it. That tire will endure severe situations over the next 4-5 years, at 65-70 mph, with your children in the back seat.

    That said, here is my input, Our store was a large chain, our tire room usually had between 1500-2000 tires on the shelf at the beginning of a sales week, by the end of the week during the busy season (entering fall, and entering spring) we would have perhaps 500 remaining. The remaining were generally odd size tires, like old metric sizes, or large SUV Tires, like for Hummers, or 1989 Corollas. We would only generally keep a few in each size on hand, but they would be sold within a tears time frame.

    We never had a tire on the shelf older than 1-2 years, and that is an extreme case. This is the general turnover of tires in the industry. You dont make money on tires you wont sell, and with limited shelf space, you dont keep tires onhand that will take up that space and never move.

    If you buy from a busy store your not going to get 7 year old tires, I assure you. That means avoid getting your tires from the full service gas station on the corner, unless they assure you they will be ordering your tires from a reputable shop.

    Last, it is important you check your tires on a regular basis, not only for tire pressures, but your tires are the first sign of a problem with your vehicle. If you notice your tires are developing thin cracks on the side wall, this is a sign of "dry rot". This is the sign of an expired tire, and should be replaced. This is not very common, as most people will wear out a tires tread long before this happens.

    Other things to look for:

    Tires worn on the inner or outer edge more than the center of the tire is a sign of an alignment issue with the vehicle. An alignment problem can be resolved by a simple realignment, but it can also be the sign of loose or worn parts in your suspension that can be dangerous. So get your car into the shop if you see these problems.

    Underinflated tires will show abnormal tread wear on both inner and outer edges of your tire(s) at the same time. Overinflation will wear out the center tread because the excess air pressure make the tire bulge at the center. Both situations will affect the handling of your vehicle in a negative way as well as decrease fuel mileage and cause you to have to prematurely replace your tires.

    The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is NOT printed on the side of the tire. This is the MAX pressure the tire can hold. You will find your proper tire pressure in several places. 1. Your owners manual. 2. On the placard inside of your door (usually the drivers door frame), inside your glove box on some imports. Fill your tires to this pressure only. It is a pressure to be determined proper for the handling of your vehicle by the engineers of the vehicle.

    I know this is basic for alot of you, but I hope this helps those that didnt know and never asked.

    Seriously though, Tirerack.com is the best place I've found- great savings, great warranties at reasonable prices, and they will recommend local installers- even when you do shipping, it's still cheaper, 99% of the time, to go through them. You can even have your local tire place install them for you!

I've worked for Sam's Club (Walmart), Firestone, and Goodyear for about four years combined and the oldest "new" tire I've installed was three years old and we informed the customer of this.

    Oh, and relating to the story, my tires I bought from tirerack were made about 3 months before I bought them.

    Before you pay for tires, look on the sidewall, there is 4 numbers, the first 2 are the week of the year they are made and the second 2 are the year they are made. go look on your tires. if it says 2406 they were made in June of 2006. NOW CAN WE MOVE ON AS A SOCIETY AND PLEASE STOP BITCHING ABOUT COMPANIES THAT DON'T CARE
