- ravamp3, on 03/27/2008, -34/+7Tata Motors of India just bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford... really wish Hyundai would've bought them instead...
- notoneofus, on 03/27/2008, -1/+19Why? India is a former British colony, and I think it's fitting that its largest automaker now has the clout to take in these two brands, which have a legacy in their country. They're releasing innovative technology and have a strong understanding of how both brands fit into their changing identity. Ford owning Jag and Land Rover always seemed off to me, and not really integrated (though they did improve reliability).
Hyundai, on the other hand, is little more than an economy car manufacturer who has honed its skills over time. Hyundais took a long time on the market to become stable, let alone reliable. Now, they produce average cars with low resale value, and only differentiate on price. Why would they be a good choice to own two iconic British brands? - prophetpimp, on 03/27/2008, -1/+6Seriously? Hyundai? Tata kicks more ass then Hyundai, They own Steel Plants that are among the best, The Taj Hotel which is a part of their group is one of the best luxury Hotels in the world. They are the first Company to be involved in Formula one (TCS makes Ferrari Software), The list goes on and on.
- tugger, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Tata also bought up just about every decent automotive design house in the USA and europe, and have very close links to lots of top manufacturers (Bentley - engine design, Mercedes - body in white, Bugatti - external hardware) and so are an excellent 'parent' to these small exclusive brands. BTW Tata are linked to a potential purchase of the magna group worldwide, a huge automotive and aero supplier who happen to make the Mercedes M-Class amongst other vehicles..

- robinohio1, on 03/27/2008, -16/+3There are too many cars. Then again, too bad the ***** ones are American cars...except Ford. Ford seems to do all right, but that junk that GM and Chrysler is horrible. I doubt either one will be with us for much longer, thankfully.
I will go anything with European or Japanese. They know how to make quality cars that last 20 years. We cars that will be in landfills in 10 years here in the US.- krets, on 03/27/2008, -2/+11I think that might be the stupidest thing I've read in quite a while. You do realize that American and 'imports" are pretty much made in the same places these days right?
- PhantomZmoove, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7The domestic guys have been bringing the quality up on their models over the last few years. Granted, they aren't in line with the imports yet but still.
It doesn't really matter where the cars are made, its who decides how they are made. The Japanese just know how to make a better car. - robinohio1, on 03/27/2008, -2/+4It does not matter where the car is made. The foreign car makers have quality controls and standards that American cars either cannot or will not live up to. People wonder why the American car makers are losing their ass and you do not see a model from 10 year ago on the road. People in Europe and Asia buy and car and keep it for 20 years or more. Americans do not do that.
- buddahead9, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1I didn't see one car older than 10 years old while in Japan. though that probably is due to strickter emission requirement than the car breaking down...
- PhantomZmoove, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7The domestic guys have been bringing the quality up on their models over the last few years. Granted, they aren't in line with the imports yet but still.
- falkonv7l, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Unless you have taken the time to really drive a good range of most those makes you really have no place judging them. I have spent 7 years in the auto industry and I feel say Audi and BMW sand out above the majority (price not factored)
- willskillz, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2yeah, they totally "sand" out! I had an old Audi 80 when i lived in Germany and that thing ran like a champ.
- falkonv7l, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2"sand"...........lol.....*shakes head*
Audi 80 was a great car! - subliminalurge, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I've been very happy with the Nissans I've owned. All were over 10 years old when I purchased them, and not a single one was retired for mechanical failures. The 200SX died due to being rear ended by a drunk driver, and both 300ZXs I simply stopped driving because the bodies were rusting away. All were still running perfectly on the days I got rid of them, though.
That said, I've been been treated well by my American made trucks, too. I have a GMC Jimmy and a Dodge Durango, both 98 models, that have proven to be very reliable with well over 200,000 miles on both of them. Then again, trucks are built to a different standard of ruggedness than cars.
- falkonv7l, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2"sand"...........lol.....*shakes head*
- willskillz, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2yeah, they totally "sand" out! I had an old Audi 80 when i lived in Germany and that thing ran like a champ.
- Whippets, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2You not good sentences do you?
- twinklyJesus, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1The Japanese have successfully marketed glitzed up economy cars to the world and convinced everyone they are worth the prices asked. When IMHO, the Accura is the car Honda should be offering as its Accord, Lexus is what Toyota should be offering as their base car, etc.
The Japanese have mastered predatory capitalism and mass marketing.
- krets, on 03/27/2008, -2/+11I think that might be the stupidest thing I've read in quite a while. You do realize that American and 'imports" are pretty much made in the same places these days right?
- davidlyness, on 03/27/2008, -0/+14At least I'm not the only one who finds this ridiculously hard to follow.
- PhantomZmoove, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4Oh its not bad, it gets easier to follow each time I see it posted. :)
- jlmillstein, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3I've been waiting for this chart for a long time.
- falkonv7l, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1That is pretty bad, I would like to take a shot at it, if I had all of the correct data. I wonder where he got it?

- borez, on 03/27/2008, -7/+61From first looking at that chart I would've immediately have thought GM flat out owns Fiat, whereas in reality it only has a 10% stake. It need serious revision in the big red line dept.
- denhamcoote, on 03/27/2008, -2/+25I suppose that's what the "10%" on the big red line is for, hmm?
- borez, on 03/27/2008, -3/+5"From first looking at the chart"
- twistymcgee, on 03/27/2008, -1/+9Yeah I think they need another colored line that indicates that they just own a share and not the whole thing.
- kelmaster1, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3A lot of companies own shares in different markets or competitors. It's brilliant really, if large companies own large shares of other automakers, they have diversified their market so even if their product doesn't sell they're still getting a return on investment. Its kinda like a bank funding both sides of a war, it's a win win situation (for the bank, not the people.)
- fucknuggets, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1and that's why it doesn't matter whether you buy import or domestic because some of the money will always come back. its also why the big 3 will never go out of business
- pjkli, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4On another note: GM has some stake in Isuzu as well. I'm curious why this is not on the map.
- Zindrix, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I was wondering the same.
- Zindrix, on 03/27/2008, -2/+2GM bought a share in Fiat for $6 Billion for their diesel engine. Shortly after, they were heavily criticized for the bad investment.
- denhamcoote, on 03/27/2008, -2/+25I suppose that's what the "10%" on the big red line is for, hmm?
- JosephDurnal, on 03/27/2008, -13/+5Neat. This sort of reminds me of a similar map of the aircraft industry from 1945 to 1995, it started out with tons of companies, some just dead end but most were bought up or merged with other companies down to just a few in the end.
Joseph Durnal- ilves7, on 03/27/2008, -1/+12Do you really need to sign your name at the bottom when your profile name is identically the same?
- monkeyvoodoo, on 03/28/2008, -3/+3As opposed to identically different? Also, they're not identical - his signature has a space, where his profile name doesn't...
- ecarver530, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1There are a ton of airlines out there, esp with the bigger ones losing money like there's no tomorrow.
- fucknuggets, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3i ***** hate people that sign there post its ***** stupid. ***** do you think were to ***** lazy to read your goddamn username

- justjoehere, on 03/27/2008, -1/+17Nope, BMW owns BMW.
- Ragarnok, on 03/27/2008, -2/+14Does that mean I could buy BMW and not actually own BMW?
- MattDell, on 03/27/2008, -0/+8BMW AG owns BMW. They really need text in this graphic. It's a bit misleading (in other aspects, as well).
- Bluejaye, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3To clarify, AG and GmbH are just German designations like Inc, Corp, LLC in English/USA
- DubbedOver, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1They are all recently acquired, wholly-owned subsidiaries of Hadden industries.

- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9You thing that's confusing, apparently VW owns VW which is already owned by VW.
- megarobotguy, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1Not for long recently Porsche has increased their market share of Volkswagen AG by more than 50 percent.
- MattDell, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Yeah, Porsche owns VW now by German law. I can't for the life of me figure out why they show VW owning Porsche.
Actually, I guess the line is correct, but without a directional arrow you assume VW owns Porsche. This map needs improvement.
- Locke23, on 03/27/2008, -1/+7It's a Trap!
- tugger, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1Actually BMW is 100% wholly owned by a nice old dear called Edith Quant who lives in London. She has no kids or decedants, and stubbornly refuses to sell any part of the company.
Volkswagen is owned 1/3 by the wolfsburg local council (the shares originally given to them for free from the British army who resurrected VW after WWII), 1/3 owned by the piech family (who own/manage porsche) and the remaining shares owned by the general public.

- ccheath, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1it wasn't for cheap labor they probably pay about the same, what it is for is for not having to pay healthcare costs for all the retiring plant workers

- nonymous666, on 03/27/2008, -0/+10The Honda Passport was just a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo.
Honda also almost came out with a SUV a couple years ago that was going to be made by Land Rover (Ford). The deal fell through.- g00fball, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1dude....how many years ago was that? Whatever mistake they made (and no excusing it as a major faux pas on Honda's part) with rebadging the Rodeo, they made it up by selling V6 to GM/Saturn and raised Saturn's credibility several notches.
- nevpayne, on 03/27/2008, -4/+0Appears to be the only one left... unless you count Lotus and the Proton.
- Zindrix, on 03/27/2008, -3/+4Yeah but they have failed to badge their luxury brand Acura as anything different than a more expensive Honda.

- m1zl3d, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3Yeah I love my little Honda.
A guy at work just last week had his battery die and he needed someone to jump him off. I've always had jumper cables in my car in case of an emergency so I volunteered to help him. I drove my Honda ('98 Prelude) around to where he was parked to jump him off. When I pulled up he looked at me funny and kind of scoffed and made a little wise crack about how it would take all day for my Honda to get his almighty Bronco jumped off.
I didn't say a word to him...I hooked the cables up and 1-2 minutes later I had him jumped off. I still didn't say a word to him. I just got in my car and drove away. =p That's the last time I help him though. He can Flintstone his Ford home next time.- MScrip, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4> "he looked at me funny and kind of scoffed and made a little wise crack about how it would take all day for my Honda to get his almighty Bronco jumped off."
Doesn't that guy know that Hondas use REAL car batteries? It doesn't matter what kind of car pulls up, it will have a battery big enough to run the car and jump another. What a moron! I'm curious to know what battery his almighty Bronco uses... probably some Wal-Mart brand battery... woohoo - Whippets, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1Totally relevant.

- RFtesla, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7Could have used a better representation of who is the owners I think. There was another one of these maps on here a couple of months back that was pretty good.
- iidestined, on 03/27/2008, -4/+42Toyota owns Subaru? My world has turned upside down.
- ubpsanity, on 03/27/2008, -7/+1It gets worse, Nissan and Renault are partners.
I guess I'm OK with that as long as Nissan doesn't start using any funny French designs :-)- fuzzlog, on 03/27/2008, -1/+0Sorry to say. If you own a fairly recent Nissan, it has been probably been designed by Renault.
- CrashOne, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1they may not use French Design but they do use a French engine.
- saikyan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Wha? The Nissan-Renault partnership has been one of the few really successful partnerships in the industry! It's all about Carlos Ghosn. Eight or so years ago they were in the crapper, now they're a force to be reckoned with.

its also why the impreza got so lamed up recently. toyota influence to make ordinary boring cars for your mom.- ricksite, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4I doubt Toyota has much of an influence. Subaru makes some Toyota models in their factories.
- nonymous666, on 03/27/2008, -5/+2They own 20%, not the whole thing.
- ricksite, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7GM owned 20% of Subaru. Toyota bought shares from GM and owns 8.7%. I think the rest went on the market.
- iet2004, on 03/27/2008, -2/+4so is mine. And here I was wondering why Subarus had gotten so boring-looking. And when they do try to add some excitement (WRX), it's super ugly. Now it's like, "Duh!!! Toyota doesn't know how to design a sports car!" Have you seen the "sport" versions of their corollas and camrys. Worst. Body. Kit. Ever.
- sgxyay, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1The Scion tC is pretty rad looking in my opinion (for a budget sports car). Honda really grabbed that snub-nose look for the newer Civics.

- vtdanokim, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2GM used to own 20% of Fuji Heavy Industries. They sold 10% to Toyota, then sold the other 10% on the open market.
GM also used to own Isuzu, then sold that to Toyota.
I'm starting to see a trend here... - ricksite, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6Toyota only owns 8.7% of Subaru. Before that, GM owned 20%. Previous to that, Nissan owned the shares. Subaru's still share some parts with Nissan.

- Zindrix, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2That's not really why I said what I did. I dislike Toyota badge vehicles because they are conservative/boring, and Lexus because they are one of the only luxury brands (in their market) that does not make performance luxury vehicles. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi are all in the same price bracket as Lexus yet they also make sport/luxury cars and Lexus keeps making cars for seniors.
Additionally, some of Lexus's lower end models are just re-badged Solara's and Avalon's.

- U2groupie, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2bury me
- U2groupie, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1It's not a done deal yet, but should be fairly soon. Volkswagen and Porsche's involvement with each other goes back to the begining of both companies, so there has always been a relationship there. One thing to remember folks, is that just because one manufactuer owns another, doesn't always mean there is any synergy between the companies. Up until I got smart and got out of the car business a few weeks ago, I worked for a Volkswagen/Porsche dealership. You're mistaken if you ever think there is any communication between the two car lines. I've also worked for Isuzu (at the time 51% owned by GM) and there was a bit of sharing between those two companies (especially on consumer trucks). but that's where it ended.
- dhughes, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1 Yes I've read there is an enormous difference between Porsche and VW.
VW is a huge company, more passive and very conscious of pleasing the unions compared to Porsche which is a much smaller company and very competitive in business and in employee relations, in other words very strict.

- ostkman, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0Honda used one generation of the Passport, hence the reason why they don't manufacture it anymore. I work for Honda, and everything we make is more American made along with Toyota.
Everybody in the industry "shares" everybody else's technology, it's whoever can make high quality, inexpensive cars who will be on successful. Honda's main advertisement is word of mouth. Watch out for Chery and Tata Motors.

- tugger, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Wrong!!! it started as a toyota who ran out of cash. Bentley snapped it up and spent 3 years sorting out the chassis and braking problems, they binned off the engine and started fresh from the ground up. That engine is simply awesome, and much of it's design has now been integrated into the current VW W12 engine and into the Bugatti veyron.
The audi was an open-***** design with a completely different engine configuration to that of the Bentley. The only crossover was some service and backup advice given to Bentley from the experienced audi team.
