Which Cars Are The Most Cost Effective?
nbc11.com — As the price of gas reaches record highs, more car shoppers are making fuel efficiency a top priority. A new Cars.com study looks at the most cost-effective new cars, combining both the cost of the car and the projected cost of fuel.

- r55741, on 07/03/2008, -8/+3That's such bull ***** estimation, even te prius only ends up giving 45mpg on real driving conditions as outlined by fueleconomy.gov.
also the price of gas is closer to 4.50 than 3.50. repairs over the life of the vehicle would be a larger issue than sticker price, so the the japanese models like yaris and corolla hundai would prob kick everyone's ass.- MacEnvy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4There's so much wrong with what you just typed that I don't even know where to start.
-In the article, they use 48/45 as the mpg estimate on the Prius. Clearly you didn't read the article.
-The list was compiled at the beginning of May, when gas was indeed closer to $3.50 in many places.
-The "Japanese models" you mention would include the Civic, the Prius, the Yaris, the Fit, the Versa, the Corolla, the Camry, the Altima, and the Scion ... in other words, 9/15 cars on the list. The Hyundai you mention is Korean, not Japanese.
Needless to say, you have no idea what you're talking about.

- skewl, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6If your aim is to spend as little time on buying and maintaining a car as possible, with no worry about the running costs, then a private leased car or a PCP deal are the least hassle, although you pay a hefty premium for this. You get to use the car for a contracted period and then just hand it back at the end with a leased car.
- MacEnvy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Or just buy a used Prius wih the warranty still intact (if you can find one these days ... there are indeed a few out there though you might have to drive 100 miles to get it).
- mywhitenoise, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I was lucky and got a fully loaded 2005 model for $17,500 last year.

- Slovenian6474, on 07/03/2008, -0/+11I'd have to go with the Yaris/Corolla or Fit/Civic. They have low sticker price, high mileage, low maintenance, and hold their resale value very well.
- Rewebbed, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1I have an 07 Civic Coupe. Not the Hybrid model. I get 40 MPG. Plus my car doesn't look like its from the bumper car ride at Six Flags.
- MacEnvy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Are you kidding? The design of the '07 Civics looks very much like the bumper cars at Six Flags. They had to go and ruin the classic Civic lines by making it all curvy and aerodynamic. Harrumph. Give me an '03-'05 any day.
- Rewebbed, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1What? The new Civic body style has won so many awards that they are continuing it until 2011. 5 years with the same body says something.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1The Civic hybrids look no different than the standard models, you ignorant ass.

- AmyVernon, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4i love my corolla, it's my third. last one went to nearly 200,000 before it really started needing serious repairs. mileage is pretty decent on the highway, and that's what most of my driving is...
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+8The designers of the compact class have really stepped it up in recent years.
- MacEnvy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1It's just that we're finally getting the decent subcompacts that they've been building for Europe all these years but not importing here.
- daimposter, on 07/03/2008, -6/+1wow, most of those cars scream 'i failed at my career, and this is the best i can do'.
sorry, but they just look like boring cars.- MacEnvy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4If the type of car you drive defines your life that much, it's your personality that has failed, not your career.
- Lark7, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Too bad I'd need a pair of Fortwos to transport my family of four. Smart work there, NBC11.
- teamposipeople, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2GM is releasing the Chevy Beat in the US. It's a great alternative to big SUVs and trucks which are not selling well nowadays anyway. At 4 dollars a gallon, who could afford that? This concept car supposedly gives 40mpg on a 1.2L turbocharged gas engine. It's quite small...but so is the cooper.
http://blog.posipeople.com/2008/07/03/chevrolet-be ... - Rewebbed, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Of course,.. they only show you the sexy side of the Toyota Yaris, and fail to show you the hideous back side.
Kinda like myspace...
http://ruk.ca/images/yaris.jpg- OpCzar, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1It's not that bad.
- MattFid, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Can we make a separate Digg category for NBC 11 slideshows?
- OpCzar, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2It's pretty much all the usual suspects, really. I'd only consider the ForTwo as a second car/for groceries/for a daughter (not much of a backseat ;-) )
- AlbinoRaven, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1These are all new cars. The MPG of all of them are decent. However for those that want the MPG and reliability plus a low price tag I would suggest the Toyota Echo or an older Tercel. They get in the range of 35/40. There's no worries about speeding, the engine in both is a sewing machine.
The echo I drive is now 8 years old and it's only cost me gas ($35 per tankl), oil, brakes and tires. Unfortunately the wife drives a Sienna minivan which costs a small fortune to fill. So suppose the economic benefits cost average to squat.
