- ironeus, on 08/15/2008, -5/+46Those classic designs are beautiful!
- apothekari, on 08/15/2008, -3/+40It's not just GM every car on the road looks exactly like every other car on the road.
What the hell happened to industrial design in the Auto industry. - amandaw33, on 08/15/2008, -9/+43shame now all of GMs cars are so blah
- ZeeZee2k, on 08/15/2008, -5/+37I like this one the most
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/1 ... - Foenetik, on 08/15/2008, -0/+30way classier than 99% of the crap on the roads these days.
- Mr.Gone, on 08/15/2008, -0/+17Y-Job sounds like something a prostitute offers you and you scratch your head cause you are not sure what it is then she knocks you out and you wake up in Tijuana, laying in a bathtub full of ice, down one kidney.
- deenoop, on 08/15/2008, -0/+17Sounds like GM ought to start dreaming again...
- flamov, on 08/15/2008, -4/+21Number 7 / 1954 Buick Wildcat II looks pretty cool. I wouldn't mind driving that.
- rowlodge, on 08/15/2008, -1/+15designers today only think about something to contain people inside of a box, they aren't real "designers". the trouble with these new cars is a 1% loss can equal a 100 million dollars in revenue, there too scared to make any mistakes or take any risks they did in the 50's era.
- OfNumbers, on 08/15/2008, -1/+14Google: Concept GM Models = GM never stopped "dreaming."
- madmondo, on 08/15/2008, -5/+17Very cool, I wish more concept car would go in to production.
- noots, on 08/15/2008, -0/+11they have no character, classic cars were built by a bunch of dudes by hand, on the production line and with great care and to some degree passion. Now they are just a bunch of mass robotically produced, poorly made pieces of trash.
if it wasn't for parts/fuel prices i'd take an old classic car over anything modern any day of the week. - mysn239, on 08/15/2008, -0/+10It's gas that killed the passion
- KiddKill, on 08/15/2008, -0/+10Those are some sexy ass cars.
- jbmcb, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9Intricately curved body panels = $$$ + weight
Big, eye-catching front ends = wind resistance
Real chrome = WEIGHT
Add to that, the ideal body shape for a low drag coefficient was computed a while ago (quick build to widest point, then gradual drop to the back - think Porsche 911) so if you want a fuel efficient and/or fast car, that's what your body is going to look like.
Also, cars have been getting smaller and smaller, to the point where they have to put engines in sideways to get them to fit. With so little space to work with, there isn't anything really imaginative you can do with a body.
Car design involves more compromises than a politician can make. You want fuel efficient, comfortable, safe, affordable, peppy, halfway-decent looking cars? They're all going to look about the same. - markdall, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9Also, "When cars were made of metal".
- woundedlegs, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9I'm diggin' that Futurliner from 1953.
(no pun intended) - Yetisquatch, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9well, with a name like yours we all just assume you are a troll which in turn prevents us from caring what you would or wouldnt drive. theres no consolation prize but thanks for playing and have a great weekend!
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9It was a good era when cars were 50% chrome
- sindex, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10Probably.
- piper999, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8I get the impression now that new designs are driven to a large degree by the results of computer modelling of things like wind resistance which means all designs are converging on something that is as efficient as possible but lacking in a human feel.
- gtluke, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8every car looks like a pile of crap today
- Shiftgood, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8This is what you get when you let designers and car lovers design your cars.
not bureaucrats and focus groups.
And i think there is a correlation in sales.. im surprised its so hard for billion dollar companies to see. - yaddayaddayoda, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Thus, the sleek low-drag design of the Scion xB.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -4/+10what are they talking about? gm still has dreams... of staying in business.
- enotswhat, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6the 1953 Le Mans has a mean fascia
- Ranvier, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Damn right, Asleep At The Wheel is a band.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6Do this again, so I can be proud again.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6I love the 1956 Buick Centurion, nice
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -3/+8"It's called the American Dream...because you have to be asleep..to believe it" - George Carlin
- ant9821, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5You mean The Simpsons?
- gtluke, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5IIRC 2 years ago it sold for 3 million dollars at barret jackson
- BuddyDoQ, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5I think they'd sell a lot more vipers if they didn't cost $100,000. They would have sold at least one more PT, if they had come out with the pickup version they had drawn up. I'll concede you the prowler. It was hideous.
- piper999, on 08/15/2008, -2/+6There's a difference between 'dreaming' and 'asleep at the wheel'.
- unfinite, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Blender

- MelvinSchlubman, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4> a 1% loss can equal a 100 million dollars in revenue, there too scared to make any mistakes or take any risks they did in the 50's era.
Equally, 1% gain = $100m. But, as people move up in management, they get more conservative. If they take a risk and it pays off, they get a decent-to-nice bonus. If it fails, they're fired, and may have trouble with staying in the same industry or career. So, they learn to play it safe and make mostly derivitive or copy-cat cars, movies, etc. - piper999, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Apart from that one.

- Gonasadude, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3A man has invented a car that can fly, if I recall, but the lack of technology isn't the problem. Think, for a second, what would happen if everyone, or even most people, had a flying car. Think about how bad some people are at just steering in two directions (left and right), and then think about how much worse they would be at driving a car in four directions (left, right, up and down.) While I'm sure I could fly a car, I really wouldn't feel safe around some other people.
Edit: Found a link to at least one person who has invented a flying car: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/lat ... - sadisticmind, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3yes. why wouldnt you want to drive one of those? they're Classics man
- corvine, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3I love seeing when america designs with no limitations, thanks for pointing this out, I am a fan of such elements of decoration, fins, glass, trim, chrome. So sexy.
- thavi, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4some of those are pure sex
- lennybird, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3I thought it might be, and that's good news for me as I'm a major blender user =)
