- vNES, on 07/04/2008, -17/+211Now, the real trick is making a fuel-efficient car that doesn't look like an alien craft.
- elitistmusician, on 07/04/2008, -8/+160Sub-$15,000, sub-$15,000,sub-$15,000, sub-$15,000!
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -1/+147any passenger in your car couldn't help but look like your sidekick.
- johnpaul191, on 07/05/2008, -0/+77you know what..... for even 100mpg i think a lot of people would make some style compromises.
Look at the Prius. I don't think anyone ever said "what a pretty car" based on its look. The ....unique... look makes it stand out though, and that was great for marketing.
This car actually looks kind of neat. If somebody mocks it, you can point out the mileage and walk away laughing. - o2sk8, on 07/05/2008, -2/+72Uh, because an everyday commute is usually a much higher percentage of the average persons total driving and it's usually done alone. If someone used this everyday to commute they could have a really wasteful car for the weekends and balance it out.
- FHIwindows, on 07/04/2008, -5/+61I want one, 282 mpg gets a thumbs up in my book~
- Bhima, on 07/04/2008, -6/+56With dollar being what it is expect it to be over $40k
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -2/+50This is something that is sorely needed. If they can get 282 mpg, how come we cant see production vehicles getting 70?
- TJ11240, on 07/04/2008, -19/+66This car is proof that triple digit fuel mileage is reachable, so why hasn't detroit caught on that we don't want anymore F150s?
- marx2k, on 07/05/2008, -1/+43For 280+mpg, I'd drive a clown car with signs saying "fag inside" and polka dots. I don't much care what the car looks like. I'm not trying to impress people I don't know with my taste in consumer aesthetics. They're not paying my gasoline bill
- rossbrown, on 07/05/2008, -0/+34120 km/h = 74.56 mph
In addition to saving fuel costs, it also saves on speeding tickets. - psykiv, on 07/05/2008, -1/+33Top Speed 120 km/h? An 8.4hp engine? More like top speed: depends on what you had for breakfast.
- MikeHuntisDirty, on 07/04/2008, -0/+308.4 hp? my lawn mower has 7 hp.....
- JamesMorris, on 07/05/2008, -1/+30You're on digg, your coolness is already at an all time low.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -4/+33This is a covered motorcycle :D
- ferrariman60, on 07/05/2008, -0/+27Why don't any manufacturers bring diesels to the US? The BMW 320d, a 2 liter diesel, get 59 mpg. Hell, even the Honda CR-V, a car sold here, can get 44 mpg with their 1.2 liter diesel. I know it's more expensive, but I think consumers would jump at the prospect of 59 mpg from a BMW that could outrun a Prius, get better fuel economy, and, ya know, not look like a Prius. And also not have those nasty batteries on board. Audi even made a version of their A2 with a diesel that could get around (not joking, look it up) 100 mpg. Bring them here! Please!
- ajb2015, on 07/05/2008, -8/+33it is two passengers, and most of the people i know with trucks and SUVs don't need them.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/05/2008, -10/+33Because we do want F150s
We just don't want to pay for the gas. If we can bring an F150 up to 80 miles a gallon or more at an affordable price the auto industry would be booming once again. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+24TheTaoOfBill: Tell them to buy a different car. There's a reason that there is already more than one model of car - no single model is for everyone.
This is basically a motorcycle with a roof and four wheels - which would serve the purpose a motorcycle might serve in a warm climate, but can be used in a cold one (I'm in western NY and could only drive a motorcyle around 3 months a year - otherwise I'd probably get one) - TheTaoOfBill, on 07/05/2008, -12/+34280MPG is nice and all but we really need to figure out how to improve gas mileage without sacrificing car size. What is the point of having a car that can drive 280 miles on one gallon if you don't have room to pack anything for a road trip.
- Dylson, on 07/05/2008, -2/+24DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+21To all the people complaining about it's size: I'm sure they can upscale it with the same shape to be a four seater over 100mpg.
- wrenchone, on 07/05/2008, -17/+36Because 1. some people still NEED, yes need, big trucks. And 2, as anything but a novelty, this this is useless as a car. Barely enough room for the ONE passenger, no room to transport anything, and probably dangerously slow performance.
I'm all for efficient cars, but this thing is a gimmick, nothing more. - BinaryFragger, on 07/05/2008, -4/+23Yes, some people need big trucks (hauling a 5th-wheel trailer, construction work truck, etc.) but the majority of trucks are
used for simply driving to the office.
And, have you seen the newest trucks? 20+ inch chrome rims, Lexus-like leather interiors, pavement-oriented tires... hardly work-truck attributes. - SpaceDreamer, on 07/04/2008, -0/+18And that is the actual mileage that this car will get,
unlike some plug-in hybrid prototypes that claim to get higher figures by cheating (drawing energy from the grid).
And it's not a hybrid, it's a Diesel.
Looks like the old Rudolf can still kick an ass or two... - fuzzlog, on 07/05/2008, -2/+19always does
- solid12345, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17Vaclav: She'll do 300 hectares on a single tank of kerosene.
Homer: What country is this car from?
Vaclav: It .. no longer exists.
Vaclav: Put it in H! - dominikkom, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17Not as much as it would in this car
- slingr, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17From the article:
"Rumors put the price at anywhere between "20,000 to 30,000 Euros (about $31,750 to $47,622)". But if oil prices keep climbing, that might be a bargain in 2010." - firebaugh, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17The car gets 235 mpg not 282. Wired corrected it in their article but not in the headline. http://blog.wired.com/cars/2008/07/laugh-at-high-g ...
- chukd, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17I fail to see if this is all true why they would only produce limited numbers. If they numbers are true, I would think every person in the world would be looking for something similar and they would sell millions of cars. Color me a bit skeptical.
- grumpyrain, on 07/04/2008, -7/+23Cars that crumple like a tin can are much safer than cars that don't crumple. Energy is always conserved. It is also directly proportional to the mass of the car and the deceleration. When a car crumples, the chassis absorbs a significant amount of energy so your internal organs don't have to try.
For a powerful example, look at the ENCAP test for the Fiat 500 (on youtube). Despite popular uninformed opinion, you are safer in that than half the SUVs on the road. - SpaceDreamer, on 07/05/2008, -6/+22the 0-60 would depend on the driver's weight...
- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/05/2008, -3/+18The theory that the more the car crumbles the better only works when there is actually room for things to crumble without crushing the person inside.
If this thing crumbles you can bet there will be other things that crumble as well.
Like your legs. - jimminy, on 07/05/2008, -5/+20It's going to be disappointing since the car will have a sail, pedals and a horse pulling it.
- HappyScrappy, on 07/05/2008, -2/+17People don't want F-150s? That's funny, it was the #1 seller (and won't be anymore).
Here's the thing. Car companies make money selling vehicles people BUY. Not people say they will buy on the internet. There's a huge difference.
You way you want this vehicle? And then when you go to the dealership and see the limitations of it (2 people, no storage space, INCREDIBLY SLOW) and buy something else, the car companies get the message loud and clear.
You vote with your dollars, not with your internet positions. - mushoo, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13RTFA!
"The car reportedly has anti-lock brakes, stability control and airbags. According to Canadian Driver, Volkswagen says the One-Liter Car is as safe as a GT sports car registered for racing. With the aid of computer crash simulations, the car was designed with built-in crash tubes, pressure sensors for airbag control and front crumple zones." - redfox2600, on 07/05/2008, -4/+17I wouldn't call it an alien craft looks more like a futuristic coffin with wheels.
- Artimusbill, on 07/05/2008, -0/+12They have not (for the most part) become lighter. As we add safety, comfort, and convenience featured, the vehicles get bigger and heavier. If we just took the engine efficiency advancements, and aero advancements over the last 20 years or so, we would already have 80-100 mpg cars. But we want bigger, faster vehicles, and have had the government force safety features on us. That stuff adds weight, and effects fuel economy.
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -4/+160-60 in about 5 minutes.
- Bhima, on 07/04/2008, -0/+11VW has cars that get over 50 and they had one that hit 70 (diesel hybrid golf) and decided not to sell it because it would be to expensive.
- grumpyrain, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11Our A/C unit has 5hp.
Btw, if you are asking about 0-60 times, this is probably not the vehicle you are looking for. - SpaceDreamer, on 07/04/2008, -1/+12some specs:
max speed 120 km/h
2 cylinder, 0.3 Litre, 8.4 hp engine
empty vehicle weight: 290kg - JellyBean473, on 07/05/2008, -2/+13That is sick. A .16 Cd is ridiculous!! and btw a well-made carbon fiber monocoque is a helluva lot safer in a crash than some tin can car.... see Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber F1 crash at Montreal in 2007....
- XBunnyRacer, on 07/05/2008, -5/+16When are Americas going to stop being so ***** hung up on the looks of a car??? When was the last time you bought a 'hot' looking toaster just because it looked better than the others? A car is a machine built to perform a function. If a specific model is better than another, appearance shouldn't enter into the equation.
I just with my husband would let me get on the 13 month waiting list for a Smart Car. - calon9, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10If it were priced low enough to be a second car (for daily work commuting) then it would sell well. Priced as much as a luxury car, it might sell ok in some markets, but not north america.

Could you not make it through that short post or did your reading comprehension fail?
Senatorpjt: "I'm in western NY and could only drive a motorcyle around 3 months a year - otherwise I'd probably get one"
If you take the time to comment about a post, you should take the time to read it twice, let alone once. - granolajoe, on 07/04/2008, -1/+11Awesome news. Last time I read about the 1 Liter concept it was just that - a concept. I'd definitely give this a thought if I had the opportunity to purchase one
- DeadFox1, on 07/05/2008, -2/+12or how about an electric F-150?
- eggsovereasy, on 07/05/2008, -1/+11Have you ever driven? If you're the only person on the road that's great, but with a hundred other morons flying across lanes you never know when one of them is going to hit you.
That being said, I drive a Jetta so I guess I'm living dangerously by not surrounding myself with six thousand pounds of Yukon. -
