- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -2/+129It's stupid that they even NEED a freaking law... seriously... would you read a novel and drive?
- whatthefu, on 01/13/2008, -1/+93It's kind of weird that the title says "driving while texting" instead of "texting while driving." Am I the only one who thinks so?
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -4/+88i think it should be a national ban. Freaken 16 year olds can't drive as it is
- sundancekid503, on 01/13/2008, -1/+78dude i just crshed.. brb
- swordedge, on 01/13/2008, -1/+48I have seen it done.
- Albionshores, on 01/13/2008, -3/+33They don't need a law. Driving without due care and attention covers it. Just as you don't need a law to say you can't juggle/iron your clothes/barbecue whilst driving. It just needs to be made clear that texting is considered to take your attention from the road.
- chaoswings, on 01/13/2008, -0/+29Bad driving is not a trait limited to the young. I see so many old people that have such shaky hands they have trouble putting the key into the ignition. Let's not even talk about eyesight...
Then their are the good drivers of any age that can stay within the lines. Unfortunately it only takes one bad driver to cause a 10 car pile up
- JRJ0710296, on 01/13/2008, -1/+29Unfortunately, innocent people end up getting hurt/killed in this process as well.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 01/13/2008, -1/+23They need a law? Sadly its true I know a few friends who are stupid enough to do this. Considers? How about enact it now! And then make it a 300 dollar fine for doing so!
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -2/+23Good luck enforcing that law. Texting while driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving, but it's much easier to hide a phone than it is a bottle of booze. You also can't really test for it the way you can drunkenness. Just not something that can be regulated even if you wanted to.
- interspective, on 01/13/2008, -0/+19Its already illegal in Australia to txt and drive. Or use your phone in any way whilst driving for that matter. Unless its in a car kit cradle.
- PabloIV, on 01/13/2008, -0/+17adn yopu can't proove if imm drujnk
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/13/2008, -2/+19"Would you read a novel and drive?"
I got through Gravity's Rainbow on a drive cross-country once.
Now, I certainly wouldn't WRITE a novel and drive. Far more dangerous. - Takumi831, on 01/13/2008, -1/+17k
- doctechnical, on 01/13/2008, -1/+17Forget a law, there's a much simpler way of handling it. If the officer at the scene sees evidence that the driver was texting while driving, he includes that in the report. The insurance company gets the report, sees the little texting deal, and points out clause 23.5 paragraph six page 19 of your policy which states you're *****, and they don't pay the claim. That'll get people's attention pretty damned quick.
"The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away." - blahtastic, on 01/13/2008, -0/+15Yes but continuous texting is characteristic of younger individuals. Also, being stupid enough to think that "OMG really?" is necessary to say while driving is something almost specific to the younger people. As a somewhat younger individual I'm ashamed of this.
But yah, I have followed plenty of people of various ages crusing along quite under the speed limit who are still unable to stay in the lines. These people shouldn't be on the road, cause they either have no ability or aren't paying any attention whatsoever. - swordedge, on 01/13/2008, -1/+15Write it up as Reckless Driving.
- fuzzmeister, on 01/13/2008, -0/+13"Many people can handle it just fine"
No, they can't. It is entirely impossible to be texting while still being a good driver. Sending a text message requires both thinking and motor control, and often looking at the phone. - g2g079, on 01/13/2008, -0/+13you can check to see if a message has been sent in the last couple minutes.
- Ajajadude, on 01/13/2008, -1/+14Second to that is the fact that they're CONSIDERING a texting ban while driving.
- luke374, on 01/13/2008, -2/+14i can has english 101?
- mrASSMAN, on 01/13/2008, -0/+12Here in Wasdhington State, a new law came into effect on Jan. 1 that bans cell phone use while driving for everyone unless you use a hands-free device.
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/13/2008, -1/+13The one near the tree I hope you crash into.
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/13/2008, -0/+12You do it, don't you?
Jerk. - Harbinger67, on 01/13/2008, -2/+14I hope it doesn't have that exclusion. Pay the ***** attention to what you're doing when you're on the road, whether you're stopped or moving.
- kurtliveson, on 01/13/2008, -0/+11Honestly...considering? Although human are pretty stupid for even doing something like that in the first place, I mean seriously, what can't wait till you get home or work, please use what little brain you have in your head.
- mrASSMAN, on 01/13/2008, -0/+11Unless you don't realize that the light has changed to green and everyone is waiting for you to go.
- g2g079, on 01/13/2008, -1/+12I saw an accident from texting just yesterday. I could tell the girl was typing on her phone because she was using both hands and looking at it. 2 seconds later... SMASH. The car in front of had slowed down a bit and she was not looking. I would say texting while driving is more than 5x as dangerous than talking on the phone while drive without a handfree device.
- cynic573, on 01/13/2008, -0/+11...but do the people that they injure in the process really deserve that punishment as well?
- absolutelytrue, on 05/26/2009, -1/+12It should be banned everywhere.
- x0nIMIn0x, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10My cousin was killed just last weekend by a 17 year old in an F-150 truck who was sending a text message while driving. He did not see her in the intersection. As she was crossing the street he ran over her, and she died at the hospital an hour later.
I wish people would give their full attention to driving, but the truth is they don't. There are so many distractions these days, and everyone thinks they are capable of handling them. They are not. I hate the idea of the government legislating behavior, but when the actions of an individual threaten the inalienable rights of the others, I believe it is appropriate to act. Most people will not voluntarily stop this dangerous behavior, so a law is justified. - widgetmaker, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10Uh bad driving is mostly limited to young people when I worked at an insurance company there was a reason young people had a prices hiked by 100-300% mostly because they crash alot more. Very old people (75+) also got premiums loaded.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9The government not only has the right, but the DUTY to protect innocent motorists from ***** like you who think that you can handle doing other things while driving when the reality is you probably can't drive at all. I coudln't are less if you kill yourself. But do it away from your vehicle. Because you killing yourself in a vehicle will lead to my insurance going up a few pennies. And while I don't value your life at all, I do value a few pennies a whole lot more.
- adooga, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9Pull over and do that *****!
You're not safe doing anything like that while driving.
This is such a no-brainer. - ELCad, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9So if someone hits me while texting, his insurance won't pay me?
- chaoswings, on 01/13/2008, -4/+13People seem to be in a habit of making laws they know no one will follow......unless of course a police car drives by. Then all of a sudden everyone becomes a model citizen.
- chaoswings, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9They all say they can handle it until they get into an accident...
- Haecceity, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9That'll be a great comfort to the families of the people killed by the driver.
- jayb1rd, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9That is truly frightening.
- elfofdoriath9, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9As an 18 year old who's been in cars with a fair few 16-18 year olds, I can properly say that you only THINK you can drive well. In actuality, your driving is piss-poor, because you don't have a lot of driving hours under your belt.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9Lets Ban people who do not have common sense.
- mindinrewind, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8I would rather be on the road with drunk drivers than with people texting while driving. Much safer.
Driving using cell-phones (aside from hands-free) should be a crime. - Haecceity, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8Have you considered that the problem is not that you might hurt yourself but that you're hurtling along in a vehicle that could kill other people? Go kill yourself. Fine. I consider that your right. But don't take other people with you.
- chaoswings, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8Same here. You can be amazed at how many things people do while driving...as long as they can hold it in their hand or on their lap they will use it. Everyone knows it's dangerous but everyone thinks they won't be the one to get into an accident (even then it's always the other guy's fault for failing to swerve out of the way and into a tree to avoid colliding with you).
- SLockhart, on 01/13/2008, -1/+9So basically what you're saying is you don't give a damn about anyone but yourself?
- masterm1nd, on 01/13/2008, -1/+9Which makes it a perfect addition to the rest of our laws.
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/13/2008, -2/+10This law can save others' lives, too.
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/13/2008, -3/+11But the problem is—who's barbecuing while driving? (No examples, please.) THOUSANDS of kids are texting while driving, and it's simply unacceptable. If they aren't smart enough to figure it out on their own or even WITH outside advice, somebody's going to have to enforce responsibility.
- skinrock, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8Hopefully you get in an accident with yourself, and don't harm anyone else.
- jayb1rd, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7When I was a teenager, if there were people outside in my neighborhood they would part the roads like the red sea any time they saw me or any other teenager driving. I found it pretty insulting since I didn't speed and especially wouldn't in my own neighborhood. This was especially insulting when 10 minutes later I would see some 30-something mom come careening down the road in an SUV and everyone would just wave.
