Vegas man paints car like police cruiser
boston.com — Jessie Vigil's black-and-white car sports a red-and-blue emergency bar across the top and the word "police" painted on the doors. Vigil, however, isn't a cop. Law enforcement agencies say what he's done with his car isn't illegal as long as he doesn't act like a police officer.

- DCMacHead, on 03/13/2008, -4/+154Kinda cheezy, but cool he's doing it for his kid.
- darlyn, on 03/13/2008, -2/+38Actually, the only thing that makes it look a bit tacky is the lack of actual emergency lights. They don't even have to be real; a little transparency would have been appreciated. But, once again, this is totally awesome.
- arcooke, on 03/13/2008, -10/+54"When I came back from Iraq, I tried to spoil him. I wasn't the best dad before."
Spoiling a kid like this doesn't make you a good parent.- CobaltBlue, on 03/13/2008, -0/+41I'm not so sure that buying yourself a mustang and decorating it is actually spoiling the kid. More like an excuse for the dad to do what he really wanted to do anyway.
- jrobh, on 03/13/2008, -2/+1maybe he lets the kid drive it but he left that part out of the story.

- spacewhale, on 03/13/2008, -5/+7Being a good dad means teaching your kid to behave responsibly. The notion that people might ask him for help in an emergency situation makes this irresponsible -- even if it's legal.
- sanman, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2So now we can all keep our house or car from being broken into, by painting your car to look like a police car. Could be cheaper than a burglar alarm.
- Verdanic, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Well.. There's a highway patrol officer down the street from me, and he had to request an unmarked car because his normal car was being egged occasionally.
- petsheep, on 03/13/2008, -6/+271If he is a safe driver, he might help to keep traffic violations down.
- DaviDTC, on 03/13/2008, -3/+60There are plenty of times where I just wish I was a cop or a cop was near. It is actually a good idea cause it costs the law enforcement nothing, but helps slow down crazy drivers. - fokov, on 03/13/2008, -1/+20As a person that buys used Police cars (they aren't still dressed up but you can still see logos etc from the length of time they were on the paint), just driving them around would slow down traffic. It sucked when people would go slower than the limit because they thought you were on the force. However, I do the same thing when a cop is around. Go just under the limit to make sure he isn't looking to fill his quota. The end result is their purpose: to put a presence that deters certain types of people from going outside the range of safe (speed) driving.
- TimDigg, on 03/13/2008, -10/+6you're not supposed to go UNDER the limit....you're supposed to go.....THE limit
UNDER the limit can get you pulled over too- EtherGnat, on 03/13/2008, -0/+12The posted limit is the upper limit. You can get pulled over for going too slow, but the lower limit is well below what's posted.
- nitrojunky24, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2usually highways have minimum speeds on 70 highways its like 45
- TheUnlearn, on 03/13/2008, -0/+15official police vocab guidelines state that the appropriate term is "the service" as force gives a negative message.

- whitezombie420, on 03/13/2008, -41/+13around here (dfw) there is a company that mods fleet vehicles into police cars for the local departments, they drive around in cars that are already modded, the only difference is that they say "DEMO VEHICLE" on the side, they even say police all over them. i hate seeing those ***** cruising around on the freeway. i speed too much and have to be vigilant of the cops at all times, i don't need false alarms slowing me down. also they now put red and blue lights on construction vehicles, which is illegal, that ***** up traffic too, especially in fort worth where the law is that you have to slow down and move over a lane when you see a pig on the side of the road.
- bingobongony, on 03/13/2008, -17/+55You are COOL! You SPEED! And call cops PIGS!
You are gonna have SO many dates for the prom!- itsthebrod, on 03/13/2008, -5/+25Everyone speeds so get off your high-and-mighty horse.
- capiCrimm, on 03/13/2008, -8/+14I don't. I go 55 in the fast lane to piss everyone off because I'm One Badass *****.

- whitezombie420, on 03/13/2008, -10/+9i wasn't trying to brag, have you ever been to texas?? try driving even the speed limit on a freeway and you get run off the road, everyone speeds so it definitely isn't something to brag about. furthermore, i called the cops pigs because i hate cops, it has nothing to do with trying to be cool, just trying to be a dick, hoping that maybe a cop will read it and get offended.
i don't know how you can digg me down for stating facts, there wasn't a bit of opinion in anything i said in my initial comment.- whereiseljefe, on 03/13/2008, -0/+5Everyone in Texas speeds unless you own a white impala or crown vic, then they all slow the hell down on the 2 lane country highways where you can't pass cause oncoming traffic is too busy and the road is too windy.
I hate my car sometimes. - homosaur, on 03/14/2008, -2/+0Yeah, everyone is Texas does speed, and that's why I hate to go to that ***** insane redneck cowboy *****. People drive like ***** maniacs in poor road conditions. I was driving 80 on the freeway in Dallas and people were blowing by me in huge SUV's and trucks like I was at a standstill. It's bad enough that I have to drive your labyrinthine mess of a freeway system, but I also have to worry about Jeb in his Corvette that is weaving through this speeding traffic like a coked up psycho.
***** Texas.

- JDL917, on 03/13/2008, -4/+19How dare they make it harder for you to break the law. They're even making roads safer for everyone else. What the hell is wrong with these people?
- whitezombie420, on 03/13/2008, -2/+7speeds limits are ***** laws, until recently most of the autobahn had no speed limits, they had less accidents that here in the states. people driving against the flow of traffics makes the road less safe since EVERYONE here speeds (except when we see a cop) its safer to speed and go with the flow. FACT.
- EtherGnat, on 03/13/2008, -1/+3Speed limits (on highways anyway) are more to preserve fuel than to ensure safety.
- midhqel, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3The purpose of speed limits is to generate revenue, nothing more.

- NeoMatrixJR, on 03/13/2008, -7/+5Drive slower *****. I don't like worrying about tickets either, but it's not the cop's fault if you break the law. Personally, I'd prefer it if they'd raise the limits about 10 MPH and then put cops ALL over the place to enforce the new speeds (yes...that includes the MINIMUM speed limit you old farts taking up my highway space at a crawl on Sunday mornings! ARRGH!) Oh...and cops aren't pigs. Unless you're into selling drugs or something like that. In which case I hope they catch you speeding with a few kilos in the trunk and put your ass away!

- DarkSpoon, on 03/13/2008, -0/+4yeah i was in Dallas the past couple weekends and was wondering whose bright idea it was to give the construction crew red and blue lights. traffic came to a standstill for no real reason other than people hitting the breaks because they thought the cops were on the shoulder.
- oldeenglish, on 03/13/2008, -1/+4"I speed too much and have to be vigilant of the cops at all times, i don't need false alarms slowing me down."
Are you serious? - ronintetsuro, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2I also live and work in Fort Worth. Never seen one of these demo police vehicles.
- davidrools, on 03/13/2008, -4/+4I agree. I'd be annoyed as hell with these things driving around. I get tricked enough by cars with cop-like headlights, crappy dark cars with a white door, or ski racks that look like light bars at night. Speed limits aren't for safety they're to make money, IMO.
- AlgnPelotudo, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2you can call them 'voluntary tax' if you wish.
- JulyZerg, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1LOL! If that was sarcasm, it was brilliant. If it wasn't... man, you're retarded! Blaming someone for arresting you after you KNOWINGLY break the law.

- Andy.D, on 03/13/2008, -2/+198Everywhere you'd drive, you'd have a ton of people afraid to pass you. Sounds fun.
- BoneheadFarker, on 03/13/2008, -1/+16It's kinda fun to watch that...
I was on a long trip with my sister travelling down a highway. We come up to this long line of cars, and we were wondering why everyone was doing the speed limit and no one was passing (this was in the middle of Quebec...*EVERYONE* speeds). She decides she's going to pass them...until she got to within 5 cars from the front and saw the cop at the front of the line. So she slowed down and got back into the right lane. For the next hour, we sat back and laughed as people came up doing 130-140 Kph, slamming on the breaks once they saw the cop, and shuffling into the line...just like we did. It was really funny when we came to a long right curve as someone came flying up...- Mike89, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8Well, what happened?
- tidu, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Well they, you know.
- bot001220, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2Just so you know, police will often act as "pace cars" on stretches of freeway/interstate if there is debris/garbage/merchandise/etc. in a trail and is being picked up a couple miles ahead of the pack. A construction truck from my dad's company once dropped tools sporadically on the I-10 over a 2 mile distance and we were escorted by a couple of cop cars to pick them up.
They don't do it just to be dicks (every time, at least).
- Mike89, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8Well, what happened?
- ahoy, on 03/13/2008, -0/+13yeah... you'd also have a ton of people driving slow as ***** in front of you.
- shotgunefx, on 03/13/2008, -1/+9I had a RGB lighting system I did for my car. Some custom lights, the rest were light bars I took from kits and just mated them to my custom controller. Due to some differences in the LEDs used inside and outside, I was driving around with what I *THOUGHT* was green, but the grill was glowing a decidedly Boston Police blue/green.
It took me about a half an hour to realize why everyone else was slowing down or pulling over when I got near them.
Anyway, I think it should be illegal for a road driven car. Sets a bad precedent. We've had a couple of people doing such things in New England with bad intentions, but they were actually pretending to be cops.- pvcrisp, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3I'm pretty sure it is illegal in most states to drive with red or blue lights in or on the car
- shotgunefx, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Yeah I believe that's the case (also strobes), like I said, *thought* they were on green.
- nizzy1115, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1These are not lights, however. Thats what makes them legal.
- NSNick, on 03/14/2008, -1/+0Uh, what? LEDs are lights, indeed.
- 2oonhed, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1The fake lightbar on the Mustang is a mock-up, probably made out of wood or plastic & is PAINTED red & blue.....nothing illegal about red & blue paint.....also nothing illegal about having a real lightbar, you just cannot ever have them illuminated while on a public road. And in most states running red illumination of any kind on the front of your vehicle, or where they are visible from the front, is illegal unless it is a public safety vehicle.. Not illegal to have them...illegal to have them illuminated.
- shotgunefx, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Yeah I believe that's the case (also strobes), like I said, *thought* they were on green.

- OrangeTide, on 03/13/2008, -1/+1Here in California I'm not afraid to pass cops. But the issue never comes up because those guys drive way faster than I would want to. If a copy was driving slow I'd pass him knowing he much not actually be a real cop.
- screensnot, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2You're not afraid to pass a cop, because if he is going slow enough to be passed, he must not actually be a cop?

- SpeedSteamBoat, on 03/14/2008, -3/+1@Vasha: A house is investment, and it doesn't have to be large to have exceptional value. It's all about location.

- PBMainiac3, on 03/13/2008, -12/+7Illegal in my state, recently a man was pulled and ticketed for having blue lights on his car. Buy, hey, it's Vegas.
- DaviDTC, on 03/13/2008, -0/+20New Mexico.
- Photokon, on 03/13/2008, -0/+9For having blue lights ILLUMINATED while driving, or for just having blue colored lenses somewhere on his car? There is quite a difference there, just like you aren't supposed to have fog lights on without fog, but it's not illegal to just have them on your car.
- PBMainiac3, on 03/13/2008, -2/+2no they were straight blue lights, not even working
- Bobo44, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1pic or not true
- burnstyle, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2from what i understand the law for 'most' states is: it's illegal to have OPERATING blue/red lights on your car.... not including neon lights where the tube is not visible
- Philbert, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I just happen to be watching Cops the other day (first time in years) and learned that in the other Las Vegas it's illegal to have any kind of blue lights even if it's the neons under the car.
- Kennerk, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1in illinois ANY neon is illegal, except inside the car, because "it detracts people's attention from the road." same with hydraulics
- hatchetbearer, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1everything is illegal in the people's republic of Illinois
- Philbert, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I just happen to be watching Cops the other day (first time in years) and learned that in the other Las Vegas it's illegal to have any kind of blue lights even if it's the neons under the car.
- photoguy416, on 03/13/2008, -1/+2It really depends on the state, Wisconsin(where I'm from) only police can have blue lights, Fire/EMS can have red. In Iowa only Police can have red lights, Fire/EMS can have blue. The North Eastern side of the country is the worst...
- gurudrew, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Years ago when I lived in New York all the emergency vehicle (police, fire, ambulance) used red lights. The only blue lights were on volunteer fire vehicles which you were not required to stop for. Imagine my surprise when I left the state and found out police everywhere else use blue.
- curtis87xc03, on 03/13/2008, -1/+1If you read the article you would know there are no blue lights on that car
- Kennerk, on 03/13/2008, -1/+1thank you captain obvious
- bullox, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1You'd also know that it is not 'Vegas'. It is Las Vegas, New Mexico.
- nickbr00tality, on 03/13/2008, -14/+3It looks like a Transformer...
Typed before I read it.
So it was meant to look like it.
Not bad.
But yeahh, cool he's doing it for his kid.

- Condemned, on 03/13/2008, -8/+2Someone call Reno 911. They'll take care of this guy.
- itsthebrod, on 03/13/2008, -6/+1One word: whackers.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 03/13/2008, -5/+5Where I live it is illegal to have red or blue lights on top of the car. Not sure about the paint job though.
- capiCrimm, on 03/13/2008, -1/+14they're not real lights. It's a blue-red colored bar.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 03/13/2008, -3/+1Hmmm, may be a nice loop-hole then. But I would venture to guess that you would be pulled over anyway and reprimanded. What the problem here is or why it is illegal, is that you could drive behind someone and make them believe you are the police. But like I said, may be a nice loop-hole since they are not really "lights".
- curtis87xc03, on 03/13/2008, -1/+0I don't think your area is unique in that it doesn't want people pretending to be police and I think the purpose of the law is pretty obvious so you don't have to sum it up for us.
- Philbert, on 03/13/2008, -0/+4yeah it actually doesn't even look like lights, it's a shame it takes away from the cool factor of the car.
- INHUMANITY, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4Here in California: 27606. (a) No person shall own or operate a motor vehicle which is equipped with a light bar, or facsimile thereof, to resemble a motor vehicle used by a peace officer or traffic officer.
(b) For purposes of this section the following definitions apply:
(1) A "light bar" means any light or device affixed to or mounted
upon the roof of a vehicle and extending the width of the roof, or a
substantial portion thereof, which emits amber, red, or blue, or any
combination of those lights.
(2) A "facsimile of a light bar" is any device designed or
contrived to resemble a light bar regardless of the degree of light
emission or lack thereof.- capiCrimm, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2webster: facsimile - an exact copy
This is not a facsimile. A facsimile would be something that looks like real lights but isn't hooked up, or has been deactivated. This is a bar painted blue and red. - d0onut, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2@capiCrimm
"any device designed or contrived to resemble a light bar regardless of the degree of light emission or lack thereof." It's pretty straight forward.- capiCrimm, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1@d0onut
no it's not. It's ambiguous as to if it means simply something that invokes the image of a light bar(which his is) or something that actually resembles a real light bar, or is intended to actually represent a light bar without actually working(which his isn't).
From the use of the word facsimile I'd argue it's the former. Without actually knowing the arguments for the legislation(which would probably be brought up) I'd argue the intent was to simply prevent someone from having a non-active light bar to skirt around the law. I highly doubt there was any worry about and obviously fake blue-red bar.
- capiCrimm, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1@d0onut
- NSNick, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0Good thing that guy doesn't live in California, then.

- reed311, on 03/13/2008, -0/+4I could see it causing some problems if somebody legitimately needs to flag down a police car and the first one that they see is his and then the car keeps driving by. It's very easy to mistake that car for a real police cruiser and it could result in several complaints to the police department.
- resipsa, on 03/13/2008, -13/+1Did anyone else notice that it's (according to the Globe's photo caption) Las Vegas, New Mexico? C'mon guys! You're supposed to be the good paper here in Boston.

This part of the story stuck out the most. I think that's awesome. This war is *****, true, but at least it's putting life, and what it is to love, into focus.- yacks, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2But was he a bad dad because he was away at war or a bad dad prior to war but got straightened out and set his priorities straight?
- fant0m, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1bad dad prior to war but got straightened out and set his priorities straight
- Tyrghast, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3This part stuck out to me because spoiling your children doesn't make you a good or great dad. Providing necessities and teaching them right from wrong is what makes you a good father.
- fmaxwell, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Apparently your dad could have done a better job with you since you feel that something done to make the kid happy is "spoiling him."
Providing necessities and moral lessons puts you about on par with a church-run homeless shelter. There's a hell of a lot more to being a good or great dad than that. - fant0m, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1II was just thinking it was cool that he's finding a way to bond with his son after he got back from an (obviously) life changing experience.

I have to agree, if i saw that car and i needed assistance I'd try to flag it down, not knowing. There has got to be a better way to make a kid happy. It may not be illegal, but it is asinine.- DarkSpoon, on 03/13/2008, -1/+8maybe he could toss you a hand grenade.
- disc, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6Cry me a goddamn river. Two instances here; 1) You are in a legitimate emergency, in which case I would hope even a disabled American veteran would stop and attempt to assist you, or 2) You rear-end somebody while applying your eyeliner and hang up your 911 call because you see his car in your rear-view, thus wasting the eight seconds it will take you to redial 911.
- fmaxwell, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Okay, and he might not stop. So what?
How about the number of people who would see the car and slow down to the speed limit, not run through a red light, or decide not the beat the living ***** out of you because they think he's the police?
- Hacbarton, on 03/13/2008, -0/+9I grew up in LV and am shockingly aware what a joke the LVMPD are. Although any lawyer will claim he's fine without an official dept. seal. I wish the guy luck when he crosses state borders though.
- MikiMac, on 03/13/2008, -2/+12this will do great in preventing your house from being robbed. if this is not illegal, than i predict that people will buy the same car models as their local police force, and paint them exactly the same :)
it sure is better than having a sign that says " dangerous dog" without having one. - Mark2600, on 03/13/2008, -4/+4This is what we call a whacker.
- VinnieDaMac, on 03/13/2008, -1/+31If driving a car that says "police" down the side of it isn't mimicking the police then that's crazy.
- skyshock1, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7I think they figure so long as he's not tazing people, throwing 12-year old skateboarders on the ground, harassing teenagers, speeding around with his lights on for no reason, or acting like a general ***** to everyone; then it's safe to say he's not mimicking the police.
- fmaxwell, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1It's only illegal if he's mimicking government-sanctioned law enforcement officers. There are private police firms and they can refer to themselves as "police." What's next? Arresting vocalist Sting (Gordon Sumner), guitarist Andy Summers, and drummer Stewart Copeland for advertising themselves as being "The Police"?
- Langford, on 03/13/2008, -1/+2This reminds me of a time I saw a junked Ford Interceptor at the Pick and Pull near San Antonio a few years back. I remember thinking at the time that it looked like it had once been a really nice car. Kinda wondered how hard it would be for a civilian to by one with the police package. We ended up salvaging the front seats to put in an old antique car.
- MisterChirish, on 03/13/2008, -1/+4"My Dad is the Coolest EVER!!"
Maybe he thinks he's wasn't the greatest dad before, but that's a pretty cool thing to do for your son.
