Toyota unveils sexy new hybrid sports car (FT-HS)
news.com.au — The car manufacturer launched its Future Toyota Hybrid Sports (FT-HS) concept today, and said the vehicle would provide both ultra high performance and ultra low fuel use and emissions. Toyota's manager of product development Doug Soden said the new vehicle showed that hybrids could be made not only for the masses but from a sports perspective...

- Mutton, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2If by "this" you mean sexy and sporty... I'm not so sure. I think most consumers are willing to buy hybrids, it is just that the prices (and engines?) of hybrids aren't comparable to gas-only vehicles yet. But yeah, this car looks awesome.

- norman619, on 02/27/2008, -1/+5It's just a concept car. The production model will not look like this.
- Microdot, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3true... however, this is old news. this car was shown over a year ago. it was not "introduced today"... so maybe the concept is sticking.
- usbcd36, on 02/28/2008, -0/+0I agree. When I go to auto shows, I don't even look at the concept cars anymore because they never make it to market. The things that made the car cool have been removed, and the only thing left is the name. I believe Toyota will eventually make a car with an engine similar to this, but it will not be this car.

- brundlefly76, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4I hate when they conveniently leave the word 'CONCEPT' out of the headline.
I've got a 'concept' of a car that runs on human waste, has no emissions and flies.
It has the exactly same availability as this car though. - richbleak, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2I wanted to love this car so much when I read the headline. Even after I saw the seemingly ugly rear end, I still thought "maybe if you see the rest of the car that makes sense." After seeing the rest of the car, I realize that the rear end isn't so bad; only because the front is so obscenely ugly that the rear looks decent by comparison. Apparently, the future will look like absolute *****. Yes, I realize it is a concept, but usually production models are derived from concepts; just not this one.
Let's hope that the concept of hybrids that can perform and look good doing it is not one that suffers as a result of this failure. No reason to think it will, but I will not let that get in the way of being melodramatic and pretentious. - canovac, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1I bought a hybrid car bc I commute long distances, not bc i want to look cool. although my Prius DOES look cool, this is just a toy. I think hybrid vehicles will either be supplanted by another technology or it will continue to increase in efficiency and more and more manufacturers will include a new hybrid class of cars.
I believe everyone should buy one if they can afford it - but if you don't want one that's cool too.

- aussieNickuss, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1Toyota need a hybrid version of all their models.....Camry, Corolla, Hilux etc. Get green cars into the mainstream. What's annoying me is all the grean, lean "concept" cars are always 4 or 5 years away! Are we ever gonna get to 4 or 5 years away?! The technology is there...the demand is there...just get them to market already!

- GeorgeClayton, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I have to admit . . .the style . . . it's really is quite . . . boring! On the bright side, at least it's not ugly like most cars from ford/gm.

- santiago1, on 02/27/2008, -18/+7 The only thing I see that car doing is rolling slowly down the street with about 20-25 hz of ear-splitting thump emanating from it's interior, driven by a young kid scrunched down with his cap on sideways rocking his head forward and back in time with the thump.
Sorry, SO not sexy. You want sexy and car? How about this:
http://www.leftlanenews.com/lamborghini-reventon.h ...- JetKrosswind, on 02/27/2008, -3/+2agreed. That car is so ridiculously amazing.
- Lemming882, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3I wouldn't argue about the Lamborghini not being sexy. But at least the Toyota isn't going to cost 1.6 million...Cars can be sexy with a smaller price tag.

- Jennica, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5And let me guess, it'll be too expensive.
- goomba323, on 02/27/2008, -4/+1Not really...probably around 50,000....not OVERLY expensive, but a good price for a sports car/hybrid.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/08/automobiles/auto ... - BadseedJR, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2**Flashback to 1999 auto company discussions**
"How can we make people pay more for cars AND still keep the oil industry going?"
"Umm, we could make cars that are "electric" but still need gas to run"
"Hmm, yes, instead of finding alternative fuels, we could just use marginally less fuel, but make more money on the cars!"
"Brilliant"- MadOtaku, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2Automakers don't care about the oil industry at all. They just want people to buy lots of cars and replace them often.
- goomba323, on 02/27/2008, -4/+1Not really...probably around 50,000....not OVERLY expensive, but a good price for a sports car/hybrid.
- amacisbetter, on 02/27/2008, -5/+9Doesn't look that cool at all...
- bjs3171, on 02/27/2008, -5/+2yes it does...
- amacisbetter, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1If I'm looking for an awesome Super Car design I sure as hell don't look to Toyota for a "cool" design. Just look at the front grill of the new Camrys. They look like the back on a humpback whale! A nice try, but not cool.
- OniLynx, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Looks like a craptastic concept to me as well. Also, I'd like to see that thing manage a speed bump. *CRUNCH* Whoops, there goes the front bumper...
I'll stick with my '07 Mustang, thanks.
- bjs3171, on 02/27/2008, -5/+2yes it does...
- Lephtovermeet, on 02/27/2008, -4/+11MPG? Burried.
Putting a big ass battery in a 2ton SUV that still only gets 22 MPG isn't going to do anything. Similar theory applies to overpowered sports cars. I'm going to the McDonald's drive through in my Hummer, brb.- fantasticjon, on 02/27/2008, -3/+2I don't know. I think its a pretty good niche. It can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds. It probably gets at lease 25-30 MPG. Would you rather someone drive this and get 25-30 mpg or drive a gasoline only comparably performing car and get 10-20 mpg. (yes, I know the corvette gets 30mpg...sometimes... if you drive it very gingerly at 55mph. Still a very nice car too.)
- DeviantDragon, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Finally, the automobile of the future as Walt Disney imagined it is here...albeit without the power of flight.
- guiltyblade, on 02/27/2008, -5/+5horrid
- dhVyse, on 02/27/2008, -3/+11Nice ass, now where are the pictures of the FRONT OF THE CAR. Seriously whats the point of showing us just the ass if the front is extremely ugly.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/arti ...- Zain123, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Despite the article's date, it talks about the "2007 Detroit Auto Show" which was in January of 2007, not 2006.
- usbcd36, on 02/28/2008, -1/+0This car was unveiled in 2006…
- vacax, on 02/27/2008, -2/+18This is still just a concept car, and it has been floating around for ages. Call me when and if they put it in production.
- thetanman, on 02/27/2008, -0/+10Should have included the words CONCEPT in the title. I thought this was heading to dealerships soon.
- piratearggghhh, on 02/27/2008, -2/+3I already know what's going to happen: Develop an awesome concept car that everyone wants...make it ugly and conservative....then sell it. Why can't carmakers just sell something more like the concept?
- mt4055, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure how this car could possibly be made MORE ugly!
- jkirk7msa, on 02/27/2008, -3/+4Buried. Too much razzle, not enough dazzle.

0-60 in under 4 seconds. Not too bad for a "green" car.- bjs3171, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2thank you. what a concept, a car article with pictures of the car. almost as revolutionary an idea as the earth circling the sun.
- diggB, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1Correction: 0-60 in the 4.0-second range (as oppose to UNDER 4.0 seconds). Sorry.
- TwoLOUD, on 02/27/2008, -4/+7You guys call that sexy? You guys need help...*pukes out slimy green stuff* Buried for saying its sexy. WRONG!
- amacisbetter, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2Agreed!
- MikeFallopian, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1You say that now, but after a few beers you'd hit that too.

- bjs3171, on 02/27/2008, -2/+4how, exactly, does one write a story about a new sexy car, and only include one photo, which is of the back?
- dboy3587, on 02/27/2008, -1/+5i saw that at the Chicago autoshow last year.....how was it unvailed today?
- BigglesPiP, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3It's not a sports car, it will weigh a ton.
400bhp means either a *****-load of cells and a 2 big motors, which weighs a lot.
Or it means one big petrol engine, and a tiny leccy motor with a small battery, which would be about the equivalent of putting an AA battery and a Scalextric motor in a normal car, which isn't a hybrid. - SpillReviews, on 02/27/2008, -2/+0the article is about a toyota, but look around. Digg filled the page with Honda hybrid ads. am i the only one who finds this funny?
- SilenceIsFoo, on 02/27/2008, -3/+2Can someone please explain to me how it is that a *car* can be described as "sexy" ??
- mcnic, on 02/27/2008, -1/+6***** yeah, tail lights! That's what I want to see when looking at a new sports car. Not a side shot or front *****.
- choopie911, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3What the *****, why would they pick a picture of just the back of the car? "Here we want to show them the new revolutionary car...but just the ass end of it."
- TechyLah, on 02/27/2008, -4/+1Green is the new sexy.
Also, electric motors have high torque from standstill.
This baby ought to burn rubber.
Oops, not green! Sorry! - iChopPryde, on 02/27/2008, -3/+1WOW I would totally buy this car for 2 reasons its sexy and I will barely have to spend much money at the gas station but the problem will be that it will cost a lot i heard starting is at 50,000 O_O daaaaam! Cmon make an fordable sexy car even better make it all electric so we dont have to support the dam oil companies!
- mt4055, on 02/27/2008, -1/+5That is about the most butt ugly ass-end of a car I've ever seen. Pics of the rest of the car are just as bad.

- drakino, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5They already showed off a hybrid sports car, and never put it into production. If they had, I would have done what I could to buy the thing. It looked amazing, and I think even better then this current one.
Toyota Volta
http://www.toyota.com/concept-vehicles/volta.html - srfrogger, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3I still like the Saturn Volt, but its cool.
- Abatrour, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I really don't get why auto makers bother with gasoline driven hybrids....
Its so much more complicated than just making an electric car with a gas generator..
- Abatrour, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I really don't get why auto makers bother with gasoline driven hybrids....
- pjr12345, on 02/27/2008, -3/+8In good conscience I can't buy a hybrid. Until they solve the environmental issues relating to the dirty manufacturing of the battery and the subsequent disposal of it after the lifespan of the vehicle, it's just not an ecologically sound decision. Not to mention being fiscally unwise.
- mt4055, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3But it is socially "cool".
- sputza, on 02/27/2008, -1/+5I still don't understand why hybrid cars need to look futuristic... whats wrong with taking a traditional sports car design and just have a hybrid under the hood?
