- AmyVernon, on 10/11/2008, -2/+61OK, anyone who thought that the air-conditioned "soda cooling" compartment would stay cold when the car was turned off in 100 degree heat is a moron.
- Mastrdebater, on 10/11/2008, -0/+38If you are scared by rain-sensing wipers then maybe you should be using public transportation.
- crownedgriffin, on 10/11/2008, -0/+38Most of this stuff is meh. The thing that worries me is how it's getting harder and harder to find new cars with manual transmissions.
- whuddadumbsn, on 10/10/2008, -1/+32Does the "self-destruct" button come standard these days?
- Surferess, on 10/10/2008, -0/+16& what about the eject button for the passenger seat?
- chadillak, on 10/11/2008, -1/+16I'm still waiting for my damn flying car.
- bhartzer, on 10/10/2008, -0/+14wasn't there one recently that ford is introducing that will allow you to control the car your teen drives? I like the cool soda cool beer thingy and we definitely need the new transmission one, too.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14Volvo's "heartbeat sensor" commercial -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUsg8R2DVj4 - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -3/+14im more concerned with on-star
a system that can start or shut your car off, lock the doors, even lock you inside your car and not let you out
and that can report your position to ... whoever
also has listening equipment built into the car that can and apparently does listen to you without warning (just like your cellphones can)
THATS a scary feature, that list was stupid - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -2/+13I haven't owned a car that was made after 1996 yet. Second hand ftw!
- arjie, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9Ooh, in futuristic Lexus, car drives you.
However, if soda cans are going to scare you, then driving on streets where I live will give you multiple heart attacks, - CMiYC, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8How did this garbage get to the front page?
The author sounds like a senior citizen that is still pissed the latest automobiles come with seat belts! I'm surprised the #1 "scary" thing didn't talk about how seat belts kill more lives than they save. - FelixDeluxe, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8And anyone who thinks it's for soda...
- Drecoll, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8Thank you, I read the article and was just pissed that they let idiots write about how they left a soda can in the thermos style cupholder things. The self parking feature of the lexus? I did not see them write anything bad about it, all they did was describe it, yet it is on a list of "scary" car features. I don't see the problem I wish I had a lexus, and I would not be "scared" to use the self park. And automatic window wipers, when they described it and said it turned on out of nowhere and was "scary to say the least." I don't know exactly why that is the "least" you could say about that it is a fricking window wiper what the hell is it going to do that would be that scary, break off and stab you when you aren't ***** looking? Its a window wiper that turned on in the wrong time, OH NO CALL 911 my window wipers are going off and its not raining, I am so scared!
- BrianSaysHi, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6How are any of those scary?
- adml_shake, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5None of that freaks teenager out like the new ford smart(or My) key does.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/06/ford-mykey-lets ... - techdever, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5or turn them off.. really, does the reviewer even have a driver's license?
- mrferg, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5I swear I just read this list, but it was called "useless features," since when are soda coolers scary?!?
- Radan, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Aright, maybe Volvo should instead try spending the money invested in this technology on better car locks or alarms, then maybe there wouldn't be some creepy guy inside your car in the first place.
- Nubli, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4This. Many cars these days are being equipped with that weird half manual half automatic transmission setups, or the pedal shifters as well. I prefer doing all the shifting myself with a stick and clutch, not some button on my steering wheel.
- Radan, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4The thing is, new automated transmissions are now alot faster and often more efficient than most human beings why even many sports cars are switching to automated gears (or at least the hybrid one that Nubli mentioned).
However, I'm completely with you on this one. Call me old school, but it just doesn't feel right without a proper stick. (I can tell you that the automated transmission in the BMW X3 could make me murder someone for how rubbish it is) - voyvf, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Yeah, set it to 57 MPH, and then the little snowflakes can get creamed on the interstate.
- voyvf, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Considering how many people are on the road that can't drive worth a damn, I hope we never have flying cars. It's bad enough having to dodge the tools on the road - I do *not* want to wake up to some dimwit crashing into the roof of my house because s/he's been talking on their phone.
- rootsm3, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Those weren't scary, they were useless.
- cleves, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Many of the things criticized are not the features themselves but a perceived flaw in product design that impacts performance. And since when is detailed product information a bad thing? If the car manufacturers cut back on the information provided to the consumer, the author would have blind rage over the lack of it. My advice is that if a left hand steering column stalk frightens you that much, maybe you shouldn't be driving. Or maybe you should read the manual.
- bipolarruledout, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3If your cell phone is listening to you without warning than maybe you should turn off the hands free function or upgrade your tinfoil hat.
- phoi, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2I would call that a list of potentially annoying and unnecessary features. . . .
I would also call this a relatively boring article. - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2ridiculous
- skinny01, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2There's nothing wrong with the auto sliding door for the minivan. It works wonders when you have to pack in a car full of kids in the morning. You send them down first and auto open the door so that they can get in and situated while you're double-checking that they didn't leave anything and lock up. It's a definite time-saver, I've had it for 2 years and haven't seen one negative. Also, some older and disabled people have trouble with the sliding doors, the auto helps them out also.
- D0rk4L, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Not all those gimmicky slush boxes are bad. The SmartForTwo's auto-manual gearbox does not compare to the Volkswagen GTI's DSG.
I don't feel shifts unless I stomp the pedal in 4-6th gear and it downshifts to pick up some torque.
There are plenty of other manufacturers like Mitsubishi that are creating computer controlled manual gearboxes that don't suck. Smart just skimped to keep the car cheap.
A true gas-saver would be a manual transmission though, no question about it. - kefland, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2buried for sounding like my mother: "more fright than delight"
- essjay, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Is that site written by idiots? Apart from the article, in their list of top rated green cars (right hand side of the article) they've got a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Mercedes E Class and a Mercedes M Class. Apart from the fact that they clearly aren't, in any way shape or form, green, who would give a decent rating to any Mercedes given the terrible build quality issues they have? The M Class especially - I've seen the sun visor fall off a friends *going up a curb*.
- AmyVernon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3That's extra.
- inquebiss, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2yay, a top ten list!
- Virgule, on 10/11/2008, -0/+111) This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48jqnXRozeg&fmt=18
I can't wait for this technology to reach the masses... build-in designated driver, anyone? - tw3nz0r, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1EJECTO SEATO!
- techdever, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Grampa Simpson apparently does reviews for yahoo
- raintheory, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1well for as many times as I've barely escaped being strangled by automatic seatbelts, i'm surprised they didn't make an appearance on this list...
- secrity, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1It is a great feature, although the governor should be set to 57 MPH.
- renanrcarvalho, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Not scary at all!
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1That sounds completely ridiculous. Why did they think this would be a good idea?
- hughtopia, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1That is the truth about the Smart car transmission. It's like driving a car while a 15 year old runs the pedals.
- socialrebel, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1oh nooooess!! i refuse to drive anything but a manual. maybe i'll have to ride my bike in 10 years.
actually, that wouldn't be too bad at all.. - riptor666, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Idrive is not that complicated to use frustrating at first perhaps but you get the hang of it, so it's not so much scary as it is frustrating and besides people are losing BMW's and Mercedes who can afford one in a harsh time like this? Self Parking is probably the most alarming feature because if one really needs the feature should they be driving on the road in the first place? Parking in itself is very easy. As for GPS navigation if you look where your going you won't end up in a river, it is an aid but you still have to think about where your going.
- rnelsonee, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1New?
Most of these features are fine. The iDrive sucked, so BMW has revamped it and allowed drivers to use normal buttons for most things again anyway. Rain-sensing wipers are only as effective as the sensor. On my Mini they were great - they always went at the right speed (and you could turn them off on clear days). On my Mercedes they sucked - they would start late and then go too fast. So it's all in how well they are programmed. - drgirlfriend, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1You just don't see enough top ten lists on digg these days!
- dan1101, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1There's not much scary in the list. The auto wipers are useful when it's a rainy/drizzly day, it keeps you from constantly having to fiddle with the wiper speed. However, leave the wipers on Auto all the time and they sometimes activate on a sunny day for no apparent reason. Plus they drive the cost of windshield replacement up to $900, IIRC.
As far as owner's manuals, yes there are too many booklets, but the main problem I have is if you actually try to read your manual, over 1/3 of the stuff in there is safety warnings. There's so much cover-your-ass in there that it's hard to find the content. - hughtopia, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1I can only assume they used it because it's both smaller and more fuel efficient than an automatic transmission. The only problem is they're also trying to keep it cheap so the one they picked sucks butt.
- bipolarruledout, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Do Not Want.
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1fbi has already admitted to using cellphones to spy on people even while they are 'off'
