- Homerr, on 02/03/2009, -0/+49The author is seriously confused as to what a micro car is.
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -0/+20I guess what the author means by micro is "small cars available in the USA"
- hbyrne, on 02/03/2009, -4/+21Are we seriously considering the Mini Cooper a micro car? By that definition a Chrysler 300 is a compact.
- mikbunn, on 02/03/2009, -0/+12Basically every car on that list is the same size as the Mini, aside from the smart fortwo.
- mmittimm, on 02/04/2009, -0/+9Buried. None of these are Micromachines.
- junkneo, on 02/04/2009, -1/+9Dugg for Mini Cooper.
- Amazetbm, on 02/04/2009, -0/+7The only true Microcar in the list is the Smart Fortwo. The rest are standard subcompacts.
- jcharak58, on 02/04/2009, -0/+6First of all these are not micro cars. None of these (except the Smart are A-segments)
Secondly the larger engine they refer to in the Mini Clubman is the 'S' engine. it is available in both the Cooper and the Clubman. - inactive, on 02/04/2009, -0/+6Micro cars?
Note to America: Out here in the world we call these "cars". - aflaks, on 02/04/2009, -0/+5Nothing will ever beat the Peal 50
- scooterbaga, on 02/03/2009, -0/+5For some reason this post brought my Micro Machines childhood memories flooding to the surface.
BTW- We really need some Micro Machines 2.0 action. Tiny autonomous toy cars that interact with one another... Like Cube World but little moving cars... - JakePM, on 02/03/2009, -0/+5yeah, they should re-term “micro” to "compact"
but, if you were to put a mini next to a Lincoln Navigator, I guess then it could be considered "micro". - hammerton1, on 02/04/2009, -0/+4Sexy? That thing looks like aids.
- egb116, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Agreed. My Mini is small, but I can still fit a ton of stuff in it. I really expected to see more European models on this list, especially since it didn't say "Top 10 Domestic Micro Cars"
- betacmag4u, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3VW Lupo 78mpg
- Sagags, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Depending where you are the size a car needs to be to be considered micro is very different
- Virgule, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Honda Fit > all
Chevy Aveo < all - Antebios, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4I LOVE my Mini Cooper S Convertible !!!
- bjorna, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3You know, Honda Fit was supposed to be named Honda Fitta, but due to Fitta being norwegian slang for vagina, they named it fit in the rest of the world, and Honda Jazz in Norway. Kinda ironic when the slogan was "small on the outside, large on the inside" :P
- joegibes, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Exactly -- the Aveo is actually similar in length to a Corvette (shorter by a few inches).
- penguinofspades, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4i drive a ford focus hatchback that has the power to blow half those off the road and still gets 30+ mpg. what have they been doing the last 4 years, why is my car not sorely outdated?
- Parrosen82, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3I sure hope they won't go into smaller cars. Why doesn't the US focus on Diesel engines they are very fuel efficient!
- kingofinternet, on 02/04/2009, -3/+5this list is garbage. the only ones out of the 10 worth considering are the fit and the accent.
- kirbytanker, on 02/04/2009, -1/+3Mini Cooper FTW
- S2000, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Agreed, just about everything on that list is a compact or subcompact at best. The smart is the only real "micro car"
- pantbash, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Dugg for new knowledge..
Wagon = Estate
Estate = Wagon - 4321234, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Sexy. (In a butt plug kind of way)
- pdrap, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Article forgot the Kia Rio 5 which looks far better than the ugly Honda Fit. They also failed to notice that the Toyota Yaris is a deathtrap, scoring far worse than other cars in the category in crash tests.
And the Focus? It's not a micro car at all. - soapbeard, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Turn to Top Gear for an example as to what a micro car is, this and its rivals to the right:
http://www.topgear.com/uk/citroen/c1
If America can grasp the concept of not needing 4 huge empty seats around them and a mile of steel sticking out either end, when they're driving to work on their own, the article above might be about these cars. Note 70mpg for the diesel (better than a Prius). Note also the 60mpg 3 cylinder petrol engine, you dont need a V8 to drive 10 miles down the road at 50mph in traffic. - aflaks, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2those are huge compared to the peel
- Xibby, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2I drive a Ford Focus ZX3 (2 door hatchback.) I know from experience that I can fit a half-height (24U) fully enclosed 4 post server rack in the back, no disassembly required. Before I even test drove the car I climbed into the backseat to make sure a fully grown adult male could fit in the back seat with reasonable comfort.
I wouldn't want to ride in my back seat for an extended road trip, but for short trips around town there is enough room for four people who with good hygiene. I wouldn't call any model of the Ford Focus a micro car. Compact car yes. Micro? Definitely not. - franklymister, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Some real micro cars: http://microcarmuseum.com/
- jmmamccabe, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2I have a smart car, selected by my son and wife with serious misgivings by me about highway ability, room for groceries, only fits 2 and why something so small is $16,000. Wrong on all counts. This thing is so sweet. Wonder why you only see people smiling and waving in these things. It is cool and it makes you happy. Does great on the highway. Tons of fun to drive with it's peppy Paddle Wheel Manual Transmission. Feels roomy and pleasant due to the Moon roof and front view. Fit's 10 bags of groceries and is used for 90% of the trips our 4 person family takes. We still have the minivan for the times we all are going. Ellipsys - Go to the Smart Dealer and plunk down $75 deposit and get in line. You won't regret it.
- aflaks, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2http://www.cheaptelevision.co.uk/images/Top%20Gear ...
its this thing.
Peel* - SomethingNew71, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Also just fyi its peel.
- flamesoftheend, on 02/05/2009, -0/+2These are no Micro Mini's!
- anixmander, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2sarcasm tag needed there bud.
unless you are serious, and not thinking, cause I bet the Aveo, Versa and Yaris are smaller. - inactive, on 02/04/2009, -1/+2Well said.
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1what the hell.. clarkson didn't drive that in Africa, he drove it around London and inside the BBC offices.
I thought we were talking ugly cars..... I saw the mini estate and heaved a bit. - saikyan, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Either that, or he felt using Micro-car in the title would generate more interest than "compact car", which is what these really are.
- saikyan, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1You know, for the money you'd spend on any of these new, you could buy a MUCH cooler used car...
- saikyan, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1I sympathize, but its important to remember that historically the US has had different requirements from cars than the Europeans. That largely explains the differences in car evolution between the two continents. I'm not saying we shouldn't be driving more small cars (we absolutely should), just that consumer demand has shaped the two markets into what they are, based on needs.
- digidelia, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1and the fast talking announcer guy
- Anfidurl, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Honestly. I've seen Kei-class 4x4s around here (in the US). Not a single one on the list?
- skottles, on 02/04/2009, -1/+2What no Golf/Rabbit? Bury as inaccurate.
- sircutz, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Totally. I own a '07 Fit purchased in mid '06 and love it. Aveo is made in Korea by Daewoo, but is also thousands cheaper then the Fit. Probably sold 5 Fits by referral just after we got it. Yes it is a small car, but I don't consider it a micro car. Larger than the old Nissan Micra, Spring/Swift or 80's Civic. Get's worse mileage too, but also much safer.
I think the '09 Fit is Fugly, but has all the stuff I wish my '07 Fit had. - RabidCapitalist, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1The fact that everyone else on the road drives land-yachts does not make it right for me to do it. I'm a single guy commuting an hour to work one-way. Besides the ridiculous fuel cost, it would be irresponsible in terms of the environment, parking, etc.
You drive your fuel-pig if you like. But your three-ton monstrosity is a far greater hazard to life, limb, and the planet than my 1,600-lb compact. - saikyan, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Agree on the MX-5 (great car, btw), but because it's a sports car, it's not up for consideration. Most people like boring cars like these (except for the Mini S)
- bincoder, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Under 30 mpg in the city?
Seriously, I wonder what these cars get in the real world if driven properly instead of the 'rated' 'estimates' of the EPA.
My 20 year old toyo pickup gets 30 mpg more often than not, and that is in the city.
Its bigger than these tinker toys too. If I want to, I can haul a full sized freezer or the living room sofa just by loading it in the back. Tons of enclosed cargo space.
I used to have a 1972 Chevelle too, transplanted an ex racing engine into it with 325 horses, high compression and a aftermarket camshaft. That would do 22 mpg on the average, in a much heavier and far more powerful car than these little econoboxes that get a blistering 25-27 mpg.
I bet the newer cars already meet or exceed Obamas proposed fuel economy requirements for the future. The only problem is that the EPA is rather inaccurate with the estimates they dream up from thin air. - saikyan, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1It's called the Jazz in the UK and Japan as well.
