http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_car ... - EnviroChem, on 10/24/2009, -5/+14Hmmm.... First ultra fuel efficient cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show and now at Tokyo's auto show. Detroit, this is why you're losing money. The competition is years ahead of you in innovation and are offering consumers cars they really want to buy.
- fasda, on 10/24/2009, -3/+11you know those are concept cars and manufacturers can basically say anything they want. It doesn't matter if any of the concepts end up in an actual production vehicle all the manufacturer has to do is make flashy shell and put it in front of reporters.
- sgvprelude, on 10/24/2009, -0/+4I'm loving that Honda EV-N
- j2los, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3an STi will get about 22-23 highway
- GoatMonkey2112, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3I like that Toyota, looks good, rear drive, 300hp turbo 4, but I'm not so sure it will be incredible as a high fuel economy car. Maybe it will get 30 or so on the highway, but really a Subaru STI is not that different. Other than having AWD and weighing a bit more, and the Subaru is not exactly known for high MPG.
- Lonandubh, on 10/24/2009, -0/+2Is it really what American consumers want? Under CARS (Cash for Clunkers) the biggest winners were trucks. Sure, the government claims it was some tiny car, but that's because the tiny car only had the one trim level...
...mind, i think american consumers are Stupid in this respect, but y'know.. - gotcheaprice, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1I hope that means they didn't axe the FT-HS concept. I really like that one too.
- wrenchone, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Just so you know, basically no non-Japanese car makes attended this years Tokyo Motorshow.
- EnviroChem, on 10/24/2009, -3/+4Fasda & anixmander, you do have valid points, but concept cars are road markers as to what is to come. Yes the looks of the cars will change, but there is significant underlying technology being brought forth to improve fuel economy of the cars. Even as things stand right now, Europe and Asian car makers are way ahead of U.S. car makers in regards to the fuel efficiency of the cars they have in production. These prototypes blow away anything U.S. manufacturers have on the drawing board. U.S. car makers talk a good talk about the future, but Europe and Asian car makers actually have a good track record of delivering.
- digitalwanderer, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Thank you!
- anixmander, on 10/24/2009, -1/+1Actually, trucks for the most part, make more sense than a tiny compact. More versatile, can handle bad road conditions better, allow carrying cargo and people with less loss of performance. And if you happen to live in mountain and/or northern regions of the USA, having something capable of driving in snow and heavy rains is a must.
It's not stupidity, its practicality. - anixmander, on 10/24/2009, -0/+0I disagree, most concepts, not all but most, never leave the concept stage, even the underlying tech never gets past "we can do this someday". And even what does make it into production, never comes down in ease of construction and price enough to make it into low-and mid-range cars.
And there are quite a few American cars that have similar or better mileage ratings as Japanese cars. European cars are a different matter, the US and Europe test cars using completely different testing standards, the fact we us a completely different gallon than Europe does being the least of the differences. A point I've made elsewhere, and using the same example I did there, is the Mini Cooper; Here in the US its rated for 32-34 mpg while overseas it has been listed in the low 50's. Really, for here in the US, European cars aren't nearly as advanced in fuel efficiency as the numbers there would suggest. - zapperdude60, on 10/24/2009, -2/+2Hmmm, if I'm not mistaken, Chevy is coming out with a car called the Volt. And what is this crap about people not wanting to buy American cars. People who say these things haven't been in an American car in 20 years. One more thing: have you been in a toyota lately, not so pretty and terrible interiors and underpowered engines. I hope the FT-86 will change all that.
- anixmander, on 10/24/2009, -3/+2And even better, quite a few concepts rely on technology that is at best barely in the prototype stage.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/24/2009, -3/+1only things in that list that rate above ultra boring are the ft-86 and hybrid tourer, but they said the production version of the hybrid tourer won't even have the gullwings, so I guess it bumps down next to whatever other slow crap is being made.
