- uzusan, on 09/02/2009, -0/+46If they could get the car in the thumbnail to go 1000mph i would be really impressed.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 09/02/2009, -1/+40I'd like to see 1000 mph trains. 1000 mph cars are useless in the real world.
- Dagreenman, on 09/02/2009, -1/+27And you though you saw serious ***** at 88mph.
- decapitor, on 09/02/2009, -1/+21I prefer flying 1 foot off the ground in my F16.
- ChromaVita, on 09/02/2009, -1/+19http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2034/2457102497_81f ...
- timthe1st, on 09/02/2009, -0/+11Unmanned rocket-sleds have reached over 6,462 mph (Mach 8.5).
- drmangrum, on 09/02/2009, -0/+10Great.
Now make a car an electric, hydrogen, solar, or unicorn fart powered car that has some pep, can travel for 300 miles or more and if it has a refueling time, make it as a quick as possible. - inactive, on 09/02/2009, -2/+11I hope they double check all their safety equipment before attempting any speed records. I'd hate to see what would happen if that vehicle crashed at even around 500MPH.
- Hubris, on 09/02/2009, -0/+9Ask Richard Hammond from Top Gear...
- HeavensNight, on 09/02/2009, -0/+9they should build a proper F Zero track for this car.
- erasedgod, on 09/02/2009, -0/+9Actually, it's a challenger.
- nem0fazer, on 09/02/2009, -0/+8Imagine how grim the world would be with only the necessary. No art. No beauty. No fun.
- inactive, on 09/02/2009, -1/+9Or, to use units that people actually use outside of physics class, 1000 miles/hour.
- zoolod, on 09/02/2009, -1/+8If I wanted my car to go 1000 MPH, I'd put wings on it and teach it to fly.
- bkraj, on 09/02/2009, -0/+7I don't think Richard Hammond will be driving this one.
- UnglueD, on 09/02/2009, -0/+7Dugg because your name is decapitator and I could easily see that happening in the scenario you just outlined.
- borez, on 09/02/2009, -0/+6That works out at 447 meters/second or 1467 feet per second.... in a car, on a hard surface.
/***** driving that *****. - ThanatosST, on 09/02/2009, -0/+6Officer: Son, you just made my quota for the next 3 months.
Driver: :( - maeon3, on 09/02/2009, -0/+6It's not a car, it's a rocket just aimed sideways. The wheels are unnecessary and could be easily replaced with lubricated skis or tiny wings to keep it off the ground.
Dugg for rockets though. - Entroper, on 09/02/2009, -0/+6Probably won't happen unless we can do vacu-trains, which requires the train to be sealed and pressurized, and the tunnel to be vacuumed out. To reach 1000 mph with atmospheric drag is one thing, but to sustain it over a long distance would be incredibly wasteful.
- Jokaroni, on 09/02/2009, -0/+6"Ludicrous Speed"
- vdog, on 09/02/2009, -0/+5The wheels are necessary. otherwise it's not a CAR, and ineligible for the LAND speed record.
That it's a requirement is what makes the record such a challenge. - inactive, on 09/02/2009, -0/+5These engineers are just not thinking 4th dimensionally.
- inactive, on 09/02/2009, -0/+5Driver: Yes, Officer?
Officer: Do you know how fast you were going?
Driver: 20 mph?
Officer: I clocked you at 1000 mph.
Diver: Oh, sorry. I'm late for work.
Officer. This is a school zone with a 25 mph limit, so it's a hundred dollar fine, plus $10 for every mph over the speed limit, so this ticket works out to...$9,850.00
Driver: Aw crap, the surcharge on my insurance is gonna be through the roof. - VaderCatLover, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4What? No dual climate control... pffftt
- xirfan, on 09/02/2009, -1/+51000MPG, now that would impress me.
- oderdigg, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4I'd LOVE to see this happen. Imagine how cool it would be! London to New York in 30-40 minutes.
- UnglueD, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4Crap
- Nikon, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4Is anyone else bothered by the layout of their website? I can't stand when articles are butted up against the side of my monitor, use some padding please.
- yikiad, on 09/02/2009, -0/+4but can you hop on it and get anywhere?
- smaster, on 09/02/2009, -3/+6Why do they bother to call it a car?!?
It's clearly a rocket with wheels.
Planes have wheels and we don't call them cars. - bradleyland, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3@yikiad
Yes, but only once. - avshanbh, on 09/02/2009, -1/+4And which idiot is going to volunteer to drive it?
- ChromaVita, on 09/02/2009, -1/+4Why do we do most of the things we do? I guess they just felt like it.
- SoCalDissident, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3I'd still pull you over, Farva.
- gearhead364, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3I think the fundamental idea behind this project, which is to get people interested in science and technology, is a great idea and something I wish the US would push for. Realistically it makes no sense, this project will not provide any major advances in current technology, but it gets people, especially young people, interested in science. This competition not only develops interest in science, but provides a source of pride for people with common nationality.
- thestereofield, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3but...his name isn't decapitator...
- 4degrees, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3imagine hitting a deer at that speed... would be a mess.
- brainboy7777, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3Do not, I repeat, do not let Richard Hammond drive this car under any circumstances.
- unlimitedmp, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3Is there any purpose for this besides being totally awesome?
- vdog, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3planes don't hit top speed on the ground.
- borez, on 09/02/2009, -0/+3I'm just just thinking of a way of truly appreciating just how fast that is ( even if it's just for myself.) Think of it as running the 100 meters, times that by five and then think of doing the whole distance over and over every second.
Therefore 1000miles/hour on land is stupid fast. - cryinlion85, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2somebody with a really, really, really, really small .....
- czernel, on 09/02/2009, -1/+3That's impressive, because 1000 MPH is very, very fast.
- Namco, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2Who uses monitors and doesn't have that chair from the Nebuchadnezzar, browsing the Internet using a datajack directly connected at the base of their skull?
- BeanieMartini, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2A step ladder would get closer to space though surely?
- MrARPA, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2>It's not a car ...
The method of propulsion used (steam, electricity, petrol, diesel, rocket, jet) is not relevant as long as it travels across the ground using wheels. - geesamba, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2Well played, sir. Well played.
- kiantech, on 09/02/2009, -4/+6I like how the thumbnail is a camaro...for a second I thought they modded one to go that fast...freaked me out.
- DeathToaster, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2You know what's more useful than cars or trains? Airplanes. They're new.
