- rwert, on 10/16/2008, -6/+174Wait, there were people with jobs in Detroit? Who knew?
- JEWestbrookJR, on 10/17/2008, -2/+145I would prefer to be laid off via text message "HEY, SRRY UR ALL FIRED. NO MORE $$$. KTHX 4 HARD WORK. TTYLBFFBBQ"
- MattFromSeattle, on 10/17/2008, -1/+94On a blog? Seriously? Haven't they heard of Twitter?
- hardigree, on 10/16/2008, -7/+94This is what I call web 2.uhoh
- pintomp3, on 10/17/2008, -4/+73why do we only have money to bail about auto manufacturers who design cars based on fossil fuels?
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -3/+65wow , I guess someone at the top is going to get a bonus for saving the cost of the facetime, paper pink slips and balls
- EvilJelloMan, on 10/17/2008, -0/+62MrDoug: This is your boss. Due to repeatedly wasting company resources to post to digg.com, you're fired.
- nesagwa, on 10/17/2008, -3/+55That sucks, but maybe they wouldnt have to fire everyone if they designed a car that didnt cost more than a ***** house.
- KenSPT, on 10/17/2008, -2/+46If any company I worked for told me, "You've got to move from Detroit to San Jose, and we're not covering any costs", I'd kindly tell them to go ***** themselves.
I work to live, I don't live to work, and as such I'd never uproot my life because a company told me to.
I feel bad for those people, it's a ***** situation. - chanop, on 10/17/2008, -0/+42EvilJelloMan, This is upper management. We find it inappropriate to use our work resources using digg to fire people (We have a blog for these things). It is imperative for you to pack your things while security escorts you out. P.S. Don't even think about taking that red stapler with you
- Smurph0404, on 10/17/2008, -0/+39I guess it was more environmentally friendly that way..
- escheriv, on 10/17/2008, -1/+34Web 2.Ohsnap!
- damonic, on 10/17/2008, -1/+33I didn't realize they still made cars there!
- PopcornDave, on 10/17/2008, -0/+32Because they've got better entrenched lobbyists?
- MrDoug, on 10/17/2008, -1/+32I wonder if anyone has ever been fired via a digg comment before?
- dizavin, on 10/17/2008, -1/+29wow, and here I was thinking that Tesla was a great company.
I feel like a sucker now. - n1eb, on 10/17/2008, -5/+29People start to care a lot less about saving the world and being green when they see their 401k drop by thirty percent.
- asnider, on 10/17/2008, -0/+21That's a low move. Even if it was an innocent mis-communication (i.e.: whoever is in charge of the blog assumed HR had already talked to the Detroit employees), finding out that you've been laid off via the company blog has got to be a ***** feeling. Way to go Tesla.
- WiretapStudios, on 10/17/2008, -2/+19Markers, this is the board of directors. Due to abusive abbreviations on digg.com, your comment factory has been closed. Please close your laptop and leave it with the barista at the coffee shop.
p.s. no more free refills! - shuffle, on 10/17/2008, -0/+16Tesla is probably banking on the hope that some of them do just that and don't move ... they likely can't afford all of those that were invited.
- nesagwa, on 10/17/2008, -1/+15Sure thing buddy. Wanna come with?
- eSentrik, on 10/17/2008, -1/+13"good communication" ??
Those *****. - frequentFlyer, on 10/17/2008, -2/+14If a company that I work for told me to move from Detroit to San Jose, I'd say "hell yeah!".
- jorisb, on 10/17/2008, -1/+12Because the average person can only afford those.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -1/+12Yes. There's a dealership here in LA.
- chadsmith729, on 10/17/2008, -0/+11I am surprised that the employees read their companies blog. I know plenty of companies who have blogs and their own employees don't read it. I guess they were all about the "communication"
- Nighthawke, on 10/17/2008, -0/+10Someone pulled a Radio Shack on their minions eh? Using technical means to can their asses instead of facing them down in a meeting to tell them in person.
In case of the blank looks, 3 years ago Radio Shack dumped 300 of its staffers by email.
No one, but NO ONE, had ever heard or seen this done before until then.
What a bunch of PHB's... I hope they fry in CEO hell for it. - jgopp, on 10/17/2008, -0/+10That blows I was hoping I could maybe get a job with them in the supply division...but another innovative company leaves my area again.
- SteveSgt, on 10/17/2008, -4/+13Which is ironic because "saving the world and being green", in the long run, is the only thing that's going to save them.
- WootZoot, on 10/17/2008, -1/+10WiretapStudios, This is the U.S. federal government. we didn't give you a multi billion dollar bailout to post on dig. We're taking the money back.
- jbmcb, on 10/17/2008, -0/+9The American auto industry employs, directly and indirectly, more workers than any other industrial sector, and more than any commercial sector outside of general food service and the post office.
GM's gross profit alone is around $180 billion, about 1% of the country's GDP. If the domestic auto industry fails, it's going to take down HUGE chunks of the economy with it. - vertigo32, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8All companies are only as nice as their bottom line.
Remember that no matter how 'great' you think a given company is they would sell you off in a minute if they thought it would turn a profit. It's bad business to think otherwise in America, and owners / managers who do think otherwise are usually quickly replaced.
In the end, there is no single person who is doing anything more than 'their job'. - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8Young company, barely on market, first official release of their car was 8 months ago, and already cutting jobs? Wow I guess they are doing *****
- KenSPT, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8As a single guy myself, I can easily uproot myself if need be, but when you've got a family to worry about, it's not as appealing of a California adventure ...
- scabbers, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8They spent all their money buying diggs.
- lougoose, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8recruz, this is the American people.
***** YOU. - recruz, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8WootZoot, this is OPEC. Can you say something about a crude oil shortage so we can raise prices again?
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7Because they are the only practical solutions right now for transportation. Although it would be sad to see Tesla take a bullet for trying to be part of the solution instead of the problem.
- lsatkins, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7I would think the cost of doing business is cheaper in Detroit then San Jose so shouldn't they have moved the other direction?
- Sanooj, on 10/18/2008, -0/+7lougoose, this is god. So I'm kinda sick of you guys ***** ***** up. We're lowering our quotas up here so you guys are just gonna have to go to hell.
p.s. listen, you can still come to the company wiffleball game. It's every year on ash wednesday - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7That tears it. I was just about to put in an order for one of their $100,000 limited-range two-seater vanity cars but now, I'm totally reconsidering that.
- santiago1, on 10/16/2008, -4/+11 So much for the new factory here in Milpitas.....
- doiveo, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7just... ouch.
- Alphi1, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6Especially when you consider (as is mentioned in the article) how much higher cost of living is out there, not to mention the sh**ty housing market (everywhere but ESPECIALLY in Detroit area).
- no2gates, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7This has to be the lowest form of low. I can't imagine finding out on a blog post I was being fired. What kind of heartless, mindless ***** would do such a thing? I hope the management winds up unemployed and has to struggle to make ends meet.
- Slade605, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6Oh the cost of balls, how I loathe thee.
- urbandistrict, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6Not cool Tesla... you just died a little bit in my heart.
- brad3378, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7I wouldn't be so harsh - The batteries are the biggest cost.
Somewhere I once read that it takes 7000 laptop batteries to build a Tesla.
Now I realize that they would not cost $100 each from Best Buy, but even when purchased in large quantities, we're still talking about a lot of money. - SteveSgt, on 10/17/2008, -3/+9What part of fly-over country do you live in? I don't know of a house trailer and lot that can be had anywhere near a major city for a mere $100k.
