I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am that is looking for a new home. It's a good condition, very rare 4 cyl, 5 speed model. Sadly I cannot justify selling the car and purchasing a new one unless forced to by an outside agent of change, which is where your unconventional skill set comes into play.
This car is great to
a) give to a girlfriend as a "gift"
b) part out to your local chop shop
c) a quick joyride, followed by field research in sheet-metal buoyancy.
In an effort to seal the deal, I'll fill it up (this alone will double the value of this vehicle), and leave my iPod in it (from all reports, I have excellent taste in music.)
Unfortunately due to insurance constraints I must leave the doors locked, but will be more than willing to leave the keys in the car.
Please call KL5-2003 to set up a good time/place to leave the car. - geff5, on 09/03/2009, -1/+13Really, a Dodge Caravan?
- clickwir, on 09/04/2009, -0/+12Nice that at least *you* made the meat and potato's available and obvious ... no thanks to Forbes.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 09/04/2009, -2/+14The moment I read "cars" and "thieves" Honda Civic was the first car that came to my mind.
I had a 95' model, and yes, some douche attempted to steal it... at 3am, he didn't know though that, that Honda belonged to a digger and an internet addict that does not sleep till 4am, you should've seen his face when I ran out completely dressed and ready. - bigteebo, on 09/04/2009, -0/+11Dead people can't steal his 3rd ride.
- FruitFocker, on 09/04/2009, -0/+10What type of kill switch? And in an unrelated manner, what's your address?
- CB810, on 09/03/2009, -1/+9I had a friend who had 3 Acura Integras stolen in 18 months...
- Abscess2, on 09/04/2009, -1/+8Burried for one page per car.
- VikingBeatbox, on 09/03/2009, -1/+8My Honda Accord was stolen a few months ago. It was infuriating.
- bigteebo, on 09/04/2009, -0/+7Why steal a Jeep Cherokee when you can buy one from Craigslist for $200 and your bottle of Mountain Dew?
- awtripp, on 09/04/2009, -0/+6Look at his name! He's KRAZY! KKKRRAAZZYY!
- evanft, on 09/04/2009, -2/+7Shouldn't the rankings be normalized against how many of each car are out there? I mean, it's kinda common sense that very common cars would be the most likely to be stolen.
- Tallon29, on 09/04/2009, -0/+5Nope, they never are. These lists come out all the time, and it's always the most common vehicles atop the list because they just count total number of thefts, not a theft rate per vehicle.
- TextingTina, on 09/03/2009, -0/+5Acura used to have a high loss rating.
- ChromaVita, on 09/04/2009, -0/+4Doubt it.
- theartfuldodgr, on 09/04/2009, -0/+4Kill switches are great. I had one on my Eclipse GSX that cut the power to the fuel pump. It was hidden underneath the passengers seat under a flap of carpet. The car got broken into once and all they managed to do was screw up my ignition lock because they couldn't get the car started. Another trick I like to use if I am parking a car for a long period of time is to pull the fuse under the hood for the fuel pump or the ignition.
- balla786, on 09/04/2009, -0/+4Damn that sucks. I just bought a 97 Accord ex-r, and this makes me worry now even more. The upside is that is has a kill switch, but I don't think that'll make much of a difference for these thieves.
- Sloi, on 09/04/2009, -0/+3Your friend is doing it wrong.
- svishi, on 09/04/2009, -0/+3these articles pop up on digg every year and they're roughly the same results
- JQP123, on 09/04/2009, -0/+3You know why this happens? Because Honda makes a lot of money on parts. The retail price of their parts are inflated.
The price of a new Honda Accord is roughly comparable to a new Toyota Camry. But if you were to buy all the parts needed to build each of these from scratch, the Honda would probably cost twice as much.
If you're going to steal a car for parts, why not steal a Honda? Broken down into parts, it's worth more than a Toyota or most other cars. - tacojohn48, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2So I guess my Escort is still safe. I thought about leaving the keys in the ignition with the doors unlocked so I could get the insurance money.
- hairysandwich, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2I read somewhere that for any given car, it would cost 7x as much to by all the parts for the car, as it would to buy the whole car itself
- JQP123, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2"... it would cost 7x as much to by all the parts for the car, as it would to buy the whole car itself"
7x is probably for the *average* car. The point I'm trying to make is that for a Honda it would be well above average (12-14x).
Ask anyone who knows or works on cars, Honda parts are *expensive*. And even the thieves know this. They steal Hondas because the risk is the same as with any other car but the reward is better --- thanks to the inflated retail price of Honda parts. - 1KrazyKorean, on 09/03/2009, -1/+3Ive had 2 stolen cars, it ***** pisses me off that people do this *****..If i ever find someone in the act of stealing my car again, I might have to kill them
- PirateD00D, on 09/04/2009, -1/+3Vans are actually very useful for thieves. Once they nab a van then they can go on a spree of other thefts and load up the van with goods. Once they have the loot, they return it to their place and then go dump the van somewhere.
- balla786, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2@FruitFocker - what type? There's a type? Also, if you're willing, I'm in Canada, Montreal... Hope that narrows it down, happy hunting ;)
@theartfuldodgr - good tips, I'll remember the car garage one if I ever have to leave my car somewhere for a long time. One other question, can you change the kill switch or add another one, or modify it? - ennuisquared, on 09/03/2009, -1/+3An unlocked one.
- robertisaar, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2most of these vehicles have little/no security featrues....
i wonder why they are the most stolen? - maeon3, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2How to catch a car thief, national geographic, VERY informative.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kaAYCpZ03A&fea ... - Cisran, on 09/04/2009, -0/+2Yeh my frirned's 95 Integra coupe got stollen. And this was in Canada and from his driveway! He lives in an area where you would never expect this to happen. His neighbours had these Nissan Z's and what not parked out but the theifs swpied the Integra. The cops later found it but it was all car chopped with the frame remaining.
- wassim2k, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1The slideshow setup that everyone hates most. forbes
- JQP123, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Teenagers are the only people who steal cars based on how "sexy" they look.
- randmcnally, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1dude in a van you can joy ride with like 6 of your buddies.
they are easy to steal because the flip windows on the side door are easy to pop open with a screw driver. happened to my buddy's van twice. the van just ends up on the other side of town in the AM. - wepeel, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1That's not a '95 model in the picture of the Civic...not to nitpick or anything
- hairysandwich, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1I read somewhere that you should at the very least get your VIN# etched onto your windows. The cost of replacing the windows alone could deter thieves from stealing your car.
- mebbin, on 09/10/2009, -0/+1Nice choice. Carry on guys
- Truedirt, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Bring the price of those parts down and the problem may go away.
- geff5, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1makes sense. also why trucks would be on that list.
- digitalunit, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1I have a '95 Accord LX. If they steal it I'll be sure to hear it as both my axles click like crazy.
- LoveSac, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Solution: Get a Scooter and ride public transportation! Will save the earth and reduce crime!
- RagManX, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Math is hard!
- bdbr, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Its a "friend of a friend" story, so I don't know how accurate it was, but I once heard about someone having their Jeep Cherokee stolen (in San Antonio, where cars get stolen very frequently). They were later visiting a border town in Mexico, and noticed a car just like theirs. She still had her key, so she tried it and it worked! They opened the door and noticed guns inside, so they left and contacted the local police.
The car belonged to the local police! - EdgarG8, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Nice info JQP123.
- Behnood, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1jack my car if you want, i have full coverage insurance : ]
- TheGuruStud, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1B/c the nissan immobilization system is a pain in the ass. If you don't have the key (chip) that's programmed to the ECU, it will not start. I imagine there's a way around this, but I'm sure it's time consuming and not as cheap as breaking the cylinder. Time is of the essence.
- unlimitedmp, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1One time I took my friends car, you didn't even need a key, you could just turn the ignition without it!
- TheGuruStud, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1integra FTL anyway, need more power....like a nissan!!!! :)
- Ksanexx, on 09/04/2009, -0/+0What cars is more produced - those they steal
- legoalert33, on 09/04/2009, -1/+1This is defiantly true and happened to my mom. Her van was stole in the local mall parking lot at which time the thieves decided to go on a shoplifting and stealing radios out of other cars. She discovered it was stole when she planned to drive home so she went back into the mall to use the phone (before cell phones were popular). After about an hour on the phone reporting it stole and getting another ride home they found the van parked in the drop-off zone near the mall entrance stripped of the radio, folding back seats, and everything of value.
