- Zambodian, on 04/08/2008, -1/+13You forgot my old car, a 91 park ave w/220k miles. About 5 mpg when I sold if I recall.
- litkaj, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Wow... And I thought that the 1993 Chevy Blazer I had for a while was bad when it got down to 10mpg...
- stretch611, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Wow, I thought my car was bad. I have an 1969 Cadillac Coupe Deville that gets 7-8mpg. It wants 91 octane or higher and lead. (but obviously, it can not get leaded gas.) But even in Bender's eyes, the car is a true pimpmobile, and to my benefit, it is not my everyday vehicle.
- tastypastry, on 04/08/2008, -0/+70I highly doubt the people who drive those cars are feeling the pain at the pump. If you can afford those types of cars money is clearly not a problem for you.
- midbc, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1agreed
now what about for the rest of us non grey poupon eaters and the cars we drive - sinurgy, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4The noted exception is of course the Grand Cherokee with honorable mention going to the S4 wagon.
- nodeuces, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Yea I had one of these - until gas got to 3.60...***** Jeep. Requires premium too. Why is it that they can't embrace Japanese technology and make decent engine? I loved my overland!!!!
- litkaj, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3The problem with the Jeep (and most of these other vehicles) is not the engine, but the weight of the vehicle.
- cyrix, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2And the aerodynamics. Jeep Wrangler or Rubicon? Pfft...it's like driving a block. I love them for romping in the hills but not for daily driving.
- litkaj, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3The problem with the Jeep (and most of these other vehicles) is not the engine, but the weight of the vehicle.
- smoger, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6there was actually a mistake with the Jeep.. the 6.1L V8 is the SRT trim, which is much less common than the base Cherokee, is not the model pictured, and priced around $40,000, not $29,000 at the article states
- bdbr, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Most GC's have a 4.0L or 4.7L engine, and get far better mileage - about the same as a Subaru Outback with a turbo 2.5L (then again, Subarus get amazingly poor mileage).
- nodeuces, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Yea I had one of these - until gas got to 3.60...***** Jeep. Requires premium too. Why is it that they can't embrace Japanese technology and make decent engine? I loved my overland!!!!
- BassJunkie, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I agree to, It would be better if they used the ticket price in the calculation so you get a true "pain" rating! If your dropping over $100K on a car the last thing you care about is fuel cost, a service for one of these exotic supercars probably costs more then most family cars!
- Kzoo, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Agreed. And if for some reason they are feeling this pain, it's self-inflicted. . . can't really feel sorry for them when it's painful to fill up my 2000 neon that's still getting ~32mpg.
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Because they had those super cars in there, I don't think the article has anything to do with gas prices... I think it was environmentally motivated, which is good for your wallet in this case too.
- smoger, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3..but cars like these aren't driven anywhere near as much as "normal" cars
- bdbr, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1That's what stood out in my mind - how little the extra fuel cost was compared to the extra cost of the car. Even if you compared it to a reasonably fuel-efficient car, the owner would probably be dead before the extra fuel costs equaled the price difference of the car.
- midbc, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1agreed
- doctechnical, on 04/08/2008, -1/+124One car per page. Buried for *****.

- davidnormal, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2"*****"!? What a great expression!
- smacksaw, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3Forbes.com should be banned from Digg for excessive *****.
"We're sorry, your story has already been submitted. Actually, it hasn't, but ***** you for submitting this ***** *****. -Kevin" - loquax, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Dude, I was so *****....
- tdogg241, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Now we just need to get "*****" as a reason for burying stories!
- bdbr, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1When people go to Forbes lists knowing it will be multiple pages, and then bitch at how they are multiple pages, it reminds me of the joke of the guy who shakes his arm and says "doctor, my arm hurts when I do this!"
- cubicledropout, on 04/08/2008, -0/+11I recently read in the book "Home Work" of a couple that transformed a wwII mobile command center into an RV. With the original armor and whatnot it got .75 miles to the gallon and had three 50 gallon tanks.
- Schrodinger2, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5***** bananas

- hollywoodphony, on 04/08/2008, -1/+19It's funny that the SUVS only make it to about the 5th worst position. And the Hummer is nowhere to be seen!
- loquax, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3I was amazed by that too. I know a guy who had a big yellow Hummer (version 1). It practically had to toe an additional tank along with it. The sad thing was he was self-employed and due to tax laws, he got a big break for buying the thing, even though he was only a consultant.
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Yup, as much fun as it is to make fun of Hummer... it looks like the two AMGs and the Jeep are even bigger gas guzzlers.
- BoneStamp, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1How does somebody digg you down for stating a fact?
- nickerbocker, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2I have an SUV, though it is a Saturn Vue, and I have been getting up to 25 mpg. Of course I do a lot of highway/freeway driving.
- DueceJ, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4Drivers behind the wheels of these autos are feeling the biggest erection at the pump.
- Chrispyc1211, on 04/08/2008, -0/+34What the hell? Since when is an Aston a "Subcompact," or a Ferrari 612 a "Midsize car?" And oh lordy, how is a Bentley Azure a COMPACT? I mean, I know sports/ultra-luxury cars are guzzlers, but don't pretend to do it by class if you're going to make them up.
- Salomas, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3The Bentley is a full meter longer than any definition of a compact car, and weighs twice as much. The fact is that the fuel wasted hauling around McDonalds wrappers in the back seat eclipses the combined fuel consumption of every single car ever made on this list. Worst list I've ever seen on digg.
- jebus123, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2And the Ferrari 612 doesn't have a V8, it has a V12, a 6L V12. Poorly researched article.
- physco827, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Haha, you see all those really nice cars then you see an average Jeep Grand Cherokee, wow. All these $150,000+ cars then one that is $40-50k.
- fuhlavaflave, on 04/08/2008, -7/+4Live in a city and take the subway, for Christ's sake.
- fucknuggets, on 04/08/2008, -4/+13***** you living in a city sucks ass.
- xsquirrel378x, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4i agree. its only good for three types of people:
1) college kids
2) extroverts
3) homeless people
the rest of us enjoy driving and breathable air- Ebulating, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Its also nice to actually be able to buy a decent house.
Average rent in New York city right now is around $2600 a MONTH. That is just insane.- loquax, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Thats what you get for living in the Big Crapple.
- Ebulating, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Its also nice to actually be able to buy a decent house.
- MrSteamTank, on 04/08/2008, -2/+2The joys of urban sprawl. Live far out of town and drive a good distance to work every day! This way any sort of transit service is impossible due to the sparsely populated land. I'd really like to see some more responsible city planning. It seems too many mayor's couldn't care less about how a city is built.
Check out Brasilia in Brazil - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brasilia
Now that is a city that's well planned.
Ottawa, Canada(where I'm at) on the other hand is a terribly managed city.- smacksaw, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2hahahahaha...whenever we come to a road that ends unexpectedly, connects to nothing or just has random concrete barriers placed to prevent further advancement, my wife and I just say "Damn Canadian city planners"...
Been all over this great land. It's the same no matter where you go.
ps - Eugene, OR - the only US city that was made by city planners on loan from Canada.
- smacksaw, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2hahahahaha...whenever we come to a road that ends unexpectedly, connects to nothing or just has random concrete barriers placed to prevent further advancement, my wife and I just say "Damn Canadian city planners"...
- xsquirrel378x, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4i agree. its only good for three types of people:
- CGorman68, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1LA isn't a city? And don't you DARE bring up the Metro.
- DuffDemon, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Sorry, I don't want to be part of your rat race
- smackafiyah, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I'd love to, problem is the nearest city in my area is 2 hours away
- JimmyJoseph, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Yeah that sounds like a good idea...but have you ever rode the subway in NYC? It is atrocious - NOT a reliable form of transportation. (though I am still riding it daily). From experience, I honestly think riding a bicycle is the best way to get around.
- Drhilarius, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1I'd rather live a life of quiet desperation in the suburbs. I have a nice collection of shoes, and my wife makes me sit down when I pee. I know I'm a tough guy because I have guns and I'm scared of black people. We have all kinds of culture, like chuck e. cheese and mini golf.
- fucknuggets, on 04/08/2008, -4/+13***** you living in a city sucks ass.
- Wacer, on 04/08/2008, -1/+8Aren't all of those, except the Jeep, from Europe?
- JGent, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Was just about to make that comment. What about the hummer h2 though I thought that had insane drinking ability ?
- Salomas, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1This is the list you get if all you do is look at the EPA number. A better list would be multiply the millage of a vehicle by the number sold.
- computershack, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Yes. Difference is though that unlike the USA entry, they're all supercars or exotic models far out of reach of the ordinary man with most having at least a 2 year wait for a new one. For example, despite driving up to 100,000 miles per year, I've seen precisely ZERO Bugatti Veyrons on the road. The USA entry is an "everyday" car...
- loki1983, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2except it's the SRT-8 version... the body style ..yes everyday, not that version
- bdbr, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Most Grand Cherokees have a 4.0L or 4.7L engine, not a 6.1L. Most writeups on the GC don't even mention such a beast.
- nitrojunky24, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3the only car on that list where the person might actually feel the pain at the pump would have to be the jeep and possibly the Audi the rest are really expensive should have done it for for cars say under $35k that would be a bit more accurate.
- larsalan, on 04/08/2008, -2/+1heja! I read the verion floored gives 2 mpg? is right, no?
- Abomonog, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1You're wrong. It gets less. :)
- bindermichi, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1The Veyron floored gives you 10 minutes before it runs out of gas
- mphree, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1If you hammer on the gas in a Veyron, you will empty a full tank in twelve minutes.
- larsalan, on 04/08/2008, -2/+1heja! I read the verion floored gives 2 mpg? is right, no?
- Doublee3, on 04/08/2008, -3/+10I have a hard time keeping my Veyron fueled on my low budget. I'm thinking about trading it for a moped.
- chilicoke, on 04/08/2008, -6/+1Where the hell is the Hummer H2?
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3It's gas mileage is better than your lack of research indicates.
- Shenaniganz08, on 04/08/2008, -2/+12***** you forbes and your one click per page crap
- mphree, on 04/08/2008, -0/+13They say the Jeep is simply a Grand Cherokee, however the engine they mention is from the SRT8 model which is the performance version of the car. Also, the EPA rating is 12 City / 15 Highway. So, buried for inaccuracy. Also, everyone understands that a Ferrari is going to suck at gas mileage, Forbes. Why don't you try to write about cars that normal people buy and cars that gas mileage is an actual factor in the buyers decision. Someone buying an Aston doesnt give a damn about fuel economy.
- mphree, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Oh, and the picture they show of the Grand Cherokee is the base model, not the SRT8. This is the SRT8...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thum ...
Now, that looks like it would get bad fuel economy. - chanop, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Eh, I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that's a 6 cylcinder, and it gets around 15 mpg
- mphree, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Then there's something wrong with it... my 2000 Grand Cherokee, with the 4.7 V8 gets 18 MPG.
- mphree, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Oh, and the picture they show of the Grand Cherokee is the base model, not the SRT8. This is the SRT8...
- gs68, on 04/08/2008, -7/+5Needs the RX-7 and RX-8.
- Zlorp, on 04/08/2008, -2/+4for real, for their weight and power, probably the worst on the road, and the honda s2000 is right there with them (*gasp* a Honda? lies!)
- antonio97b, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Got to love the Wankel.

Just the numbers so people dont have to waste time looking them up ;)- antonio97b, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Funny how the RX8 is 1 mpg better but the RX7 have 43 more hp and 58 lb ft of torque more...
Kind of a step back I think. - smacksaw, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Now, actually drive/own any of those in real life and you get something like this:
RX-7: 14 city, 20 hwy + 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles
RX-8: 12 city, 18 hwy + 1 quart of oil every fillup
S2000: 8 city, 22 hwy (because it's meant to be driven at 3000+ rpms) - Zlorp, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1you should have posted their weights too, also you should have given the stats for a corvette just so people realize how terrible these numbers are compared to their weight and power
also, where are you getting those RX-8 numbers from? THESE are the ones on msn.com
6-Speed Automatic Overdrive 16 / 22 mpg N/A
6-Speed Manual Overdrive N/A 16 / 23 mpg
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/spec_engines.asp ...
- antonio97b, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Funny how the RX8 is 1 mpg better but the RX7 have 43 more hp and 58 lb ft of torque more...
- Zlorp, on 04/08/2008, -2/+4for real, for their weight and power, probably the worst on the road, and the honda s2000 is right there with them (*gasp* a Honda? lies!)
- pbgswd, on 04/08/2008, -5/+8gravy sucking pigs. A portion of everything we pay for goes to support crap like that. The reason things cost what they do is because the people who are at the top of the food chain believe they deserve to own these things. If they all rode the bus, we would have better returns on financial investments.........
- laserblazer, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4Part of the confidence trick that is money is the delusion of entitlement.
- JGent, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1If people on the top of the food chain didn't take bigger rewards for the work they did, why would people want to take jobs with more stress and responsibility. I'm not saying people shouldn't be environmentally aware etc, THEY DEFIANTLY SHOULD BE. but the nature of the society we live in is very reward driven. You are told at school if you don't get a nice job you wont get nice things etc. Materialism is part of our culture, and the desire to want what others can't afford
- Kallius, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3Right, and when I checked out one of the links on the page about the world's youngest billionaires, 7 out of the 10 *inherited* their money and one of the self-made ones was apparently complicit in bilking others out of their money (Enron). Amazing how the majority at the top of the food chain really didn't get there on their own merits but either won the genetic lottery to start with, or were ruthless enough to say to hell with common decency. Besides, if you're at the top, you can afford to have someone else stress *for* you, leaving you the gravy.
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Don't give those people your money if they're giving you ***** returns.
- KdogTN, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5If you drop $1.5 mil on a car and I hear you complain about the cost of fuel, I would slap the dog ***** out of you. The construction worker trying to get to work and complaining is another story...
On the other side, that Veyron is one sexy car... I gotta hit the powerball so I can get one of those...- badjoke, on 04/08/2008, -2/+4I respect the Veyron's speed, innovation and all that, but it really isn't all that attractive or sleek. It looks like some sort of odd, plastic turtle.
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4It's a ninja turtle on wheels, which is awesome.
- badjoke, on 04/08/2008, -2/+4I respect the Veyron's speed, innovation and all that, but it really isn't all that attractive or sleek. It looks like some sort of odd, plastic turtle.
- Zlorp, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2My 87 Ford Bronco with some "modifications" was getting about 220 miles to a tank. a 32 gallon tank.
- larsalan, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2gotta keep away from that catalytic. also, nice driving. :)
- brstilson, on 04/08/2008, -0/+7You really couldn't whip about a calculator? That's 6.875 miles per gallon.
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Dugg for reading my mind.
- haylel, on 04/08/2008, -3/+11If these assholes weren't stealing all our gas to drive their ***** vehicle around the block once or twice, we'd have more gas for the rest of us, demand would be lower, prices would be cheaper
next time you see a hummer H2 (5-10 minutes from now), think of this post.- xienze, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3It's funny you mention the H2, because it didn't even make it on the list. But I'm sure that was just a minor error on your part... I know someone on Digg would never just assume that the H2 is the biggest gas guzzler of all time.
- haylel, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1it may not be on the list, but i see them more than i see anything on this list, and it's just barely not on this list if you check the specs on it.
- BoneStamp, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Next time you see an H2, remember that it wasn't on this list of 12 worst gas guzzlers.
- xienze, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3It's funny you mention the H2, because it didn't even make it on the list. But I'm sure that was just a minor error on your part... I know someone on Digg would never just assume that the H2 is the biggest gas guzzler of all time.
- jameslunn, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6I have an Audi S4 - 4.2 V8 Cabriolet... which is heavier than the S4 Avant and I get an avergage of 25 MPG and on the 'Highway' can easily get 31 MPG... what a load of tosh...
- MrSane, on 04/08/2008, -2/+1I have an '07 Audi S4 V8 as well. I don't cry at the pump because I live in Vancouver and have the privilege of being able to walk most of the places I frequent.
I love my car, but thankfully I only gas up once every 2 months :) - Amazetbm, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1What's your average highway speed?
- MrSane, on 04/08/2008, -2/+1I have an '07 Audi S4 V8 as well. I don't cry at the pump because I live in Vancouver and have the privilege of being able to walk most of the places I frequent.
- ergobliss, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2yeah, I'm sure the people who own these cars cry a river every time they have to refuel. I feel so bad for them.
- solidus636, on 04/08/2008, -3/+3Why? Anyone who can afford to buy a $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron can afford 5k worth of gas a year.
- jamdogg, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4Google 'sarcasm'.
- solidus636, on 04/08/2008, -3/+3Why? Anyone who can afford to buy a $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron can afford 5k worth of gas a year.
- Rozenrot, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Chances are people who are driving half the cars on that list don't really care about an extra 5k a year. : A regular joe like you or me does, but the ceo driving the 400,000$ car doesn't.
- bravado84, on 04/08/2008, -5/+0Going bald? having erectile dysfunction? Can afford to pay the ransom for your kids?
Time to drive a Veyron... I should be their advertising exec! - itsgotyou, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2pffft. what are those cars, gas sipping hybrids? my car gets 5mpg parked in my garage.
- marc54, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5Buried for linking to forbes.com
- prkchpsndwiches, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5***** Forbes. One per page, goes from #1 to #10 and "I'm really hurting at the pump this year. Yeah, my 1.5 mill Bugatti's a real gas guzzler."
- MortalynFlux, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1It's sad that some of those V12's get better highway miles than my Jeep Liberty 2003.
- paker, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Geez if you make a list of worst gas guzzlers make a list of the production models that the majority of the population actually drive everyday.
- BTallack, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2They sure seem to have a funny idea of what a compact is. The Bentley Azure is 17 feet long!
- zhlimnick, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1mclaren f1?
- Caddis, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Not in production any more. These are current models.
- xenuunex, on 04/08/2008, -5/+1What an absolute piece of tosh. First of all, all but one of the cars are European.
Everyone knows european cars are more efficient and less polluting than American cars.
Where is the Humvee ? Where are the huge SUVs all the Americans Drive?
Anti-european car crap. Yours are more polluting and more fuel consuming than ours (and looks worse too)- JimmyJoseph, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2I don't think this is anti-european...anyone who knows cars knows europeans CAN be super light/tiny and have tiny efficient engines (polo, smart, corsa, etc.). The cars on this list do not reflect a normal european car - they are all AMGs, astons, lambo/ferrari, BUGATTI (!?!?) etc. And yeah - I agree with you...with only a few exceptions, american cars are trash compared to european (its embarassing).
- bdbr, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Yeah, that would make a lot of sense. "The 12 Worst Gas-Guzzling Cars in the World, Except For Models Which Have Worse Mileage But Are Made In Europe".
- SoulDrift404, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Why does Forbes continue to refresh the whole page just to change the image?
- rspeed, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Because they still get ad impressions each time.
- tchynerd, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Heh reminds me of my car (1978 Thunderbird :D). 5 mpg and a top speed of 85 miles an hour! She looks sweet though even if it loves to binge on gas.
- smackafiyah, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Most of these cars are the type of cars you don't even take out of the garage except once or twice in a blue moon
- rsdigi, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1WHAT A RETARDED ARTICLE. The people buying such unnecessary vehicles are laughing all the way to the pump. Do you really think they care how much gas is? Hell I work with a guy that has a RumbleBee Dodge Ram 1500 and he seems to brag about filling it up with $85 of gas.
- musntSurfatWork, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Buried. No mention of my old '79 Ford LTD, where I had to drive to the nearest gas station just because I started the motor. Although back then, gas was rampant at .44 cents a liter, I am paying more at the pump now to fill a 4 cyclinder, than I had to driving my 5,000 Steel Frame. ***** cars, I'm seriously buying a Bicycle this summer, gonna get healthy again. Stressing over gas prices takes years away from a man's life.
- JimmyJoseph, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Cycling ftw!
- Endoftheworld, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Believe me if you can afford some 250K car, I'm sure you can afford the gas prices that come with it, this was the worst article I have ever seen I wish I could go back in time and slap myself when I click on this link.
- thehemi, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Does a Lamborghini owner really feel *pain* at the pump?
- loki1983, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1only bangin' the ladies after he's got herps lol
- p51d007, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Dugg down as a STUPID article....like 90% of the people of the world could afford one of these cars anyway.
- misskari, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Mini Compact Aston Martin DB9 pic is photoshopped. Cloned trees in background. Yes, I'm a dork and that's all I have to contribute.
- yakk00, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Crap article. All 200 Veyron's are probably driven less in one year than 1 douchbag's Hummer.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4The title is wrong for about half of them. Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti, Aston Martin... those are some of the *BEST* gas guzzling cars in the world.
- loki1983, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1inaccurate... forbes sucks and how these vehicles are classified is trash
- techboid, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0That aston martin is damn sexy
- kurtwinter, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1First, most of the drivers for the cars listed wouldn't feel pain at the pump unless gas was $250 a gallon, and these cars simply aren't plentiful enough to be any more than a blip on a statistical analysis. But the SUV's, that's a different story - they don't feel the pain at the pump, they cause it. So many idiots buy these gas guzzling behemoths that they have altered the demand curve to the point of promoting these high oil prices. And if you don't believe me, take macroeconomics.
- SmilinGoat, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0over 1/3 of the vehicles are MB's. also how is a Bently a "subcompact" or a AM a "mini-compact" either way owners of these cars are not going to be feeling any pain anytime soon, unless of course some tree huggers catch their $100k+ rides on fire.
- nathandow, on 04/08/2008, -1/+5As many have mentioned, most the vehicles listed are luxury performance models with excessive horsepower numbers. The one *normal* looking car (the Jeep) is inaccurately listed as the normal V8, when it's actually the SRT-8 version. That being said, I still trying to figure out the hyperbole around american gas guzzling cars.
How about we compare these gas-guzzling american cars with there japanese counterparts? All number are EPA from manufacturers websites.
Z06 Corvette (V8 505hp 470lbs/t) 16/26mpg
Honda S2000 (4cyl 232hp 162lbs/t) 18/21mpg
Silverado (5.3L V8 4x4) 14/19mpg
Toyota Tundra (V8) 13/17mpg
Malibu (4cyl ecotec) 22/30mpg
Honda Accord (4cyl) 21/31mpg
Malibu (V6 auto) 17/26mpg
Honda Accord (V6 auto) 19/29mpg
Chevy Cobalt (4cyl man trans) 24/33mpg
Honda Civic (4cyl manual trans) 26/34mpg
So it turns out that american cars are right up there with slight variations when you look at the EPA numbers for comparable vehicles. One of the examples is apples and oranges (the S2000 and Z06). The Z06 is a 70K car, and the S2000 is 34K, That extra money can buy alot of light materials, but it's still impressive that an archaic pushrod V8 design can post double horsepower/torque numbers then it's high-tec DOHC 4cyl japanese rival.
Everyone want's to pick on american car companies these days, maybe they smell blood in the water, or maybe it's some kind of reverse jingoism. But simple facts are your friends. Foreign car makers dont have some magic mileage fairies in their cars. Mileage numbers are more reflective of the purpose of the vehicles, as opposed to who manufactured it. If you need a V8 truck for work (god forbid american has alot of large industrial/agricultural jobs where you need a truck), then yes.. you are going to get 13-14mpg or so city mileage whether you are driving american or japanese steel. This american car gas-guzlling mindset is borne out of ignorance, and elitism. If you wan't to sound smart, and smug when you grill other people over there vehicles choices, atleast get the facts right.- knowitman, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Well said. I just want to add this about the Z06. The car costs half as much, has the same power, yet gets double the gas mileage in the city and on the highway, as Eurpoean sports cars.
- rizzo2008, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1This is stupid because how many Lamborghinis and Ferraris are out there? Not too many eh? Now how many SUVs are there? Way to many!
- KrystaNoel, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1No offense Forbes but whoever ownes these bad ass cars probably aren't too worried about gas prices.
