- wzpgsr, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Who here is sick to death of "top 10" lists standing in for real content?
- aflaks, on 05/13/2008, -2/+21what, no Eleanor from Gone in 60 seconds? And for Christ sake forbes, let us scroll through the list ourselves.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5No flying cars, remember ;-)
Anyway, it only did around 170mph with it's NOS (and if you did that in real life, all the valves would come out and do a little dance for you on the bonnet).- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Bugger - I wanted to add before my edit time ran out:
And I think the Drag-u-la was there for a joke - there are plenty of standard cars in films that are faster than that (the Lambo in Transporter jumps into my head as one, for instance).
- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Bugger - I wanted to add before my edit time ran out:
- Oxidizer, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8What about the Back to the Future car? Technically it traveled faster than light.
- Goblin, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6You have some damn slow light if it's going less than 88mph
- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1*No flying cars*
- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5No flying cars, remember ;-)
- Number23, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9No GRX from Speed Racer
The car was so fast Speed had to take a special drug to drive it.
Fail - Iwantbatteries, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8was it just me or is the "high country club" add that pops up on this page the most annoying add in months?
- cme884, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Yeah, it was pretty bad. I don't know why I bothered fooling with the page... every time it moved forward for me the damned thing started again. This story has been buried for forbes' ***** website layout.

- shig, on 05/13/2008, -1/+14Where is the Delorean from "Back to the Future"? It could warp time and space.
- diablo2032, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9quantum tunneling doesnt count....thats cheating
- Jeffler, on 05/13/2008, -0/+14Top speed was 88mph.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Right, but if could travel into the future! So if you want to get somewhere you can just warp there faster than any car could, unless the distance was less than the distance it takes to get up to 88mph and warp out then back in.
Also... this list BLOWS anyway.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Right, but if could travel into the future! So if you want to get somewhere you can just warp there faster than any car could, unless the distance was less than the distance it takes to get up to 88mph and warp out then back in.
- mustang30266, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6I don't know, the fastest I saw it go was 88mph.
- mustang30266, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6Wow, I really wish I could delete that now...
- Leathersoup, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2But the Delorean isn't really a fast car at all.
- Jeffler, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1That was why it was 88 - the original DMC-1's stock top speed was 87 MPH.
- mustang30266, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6Wow, I really wish I could delete that now...
- Thaeon, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2The list specified that flying cars weren't eligible. Since it got a hovercar conversion when Doc went to the future it couldn't be on this list.
- theendcrazyeye, on 05/13/2008, -0/+13Buried as inaccurate, how is the General Lee faster then the Aston Martin?
- redfred18t, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6EXACTLY!
Also, when was the Charger in the F&F said to go 200+ mph
I call shenanigans.- theendcrazyeye, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4The F&F charger never went that fast, but Vin Diesel claimed in the movie that it was pushing 900+ HP, so obviously they didnt do any research.
- Domdogg123, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1You'd need quite a bit of horsepower to get that heavy car up to above 200mph...like some serious HP

- swordedge, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Kitt can do 300 in super pursuit mode that showed up in the last season.
He also out ran a Lear jet from California to Las Vegas. - Byramerica, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0He could go faster than that. KITT had Super Pursuit Mode which brought the speed up over 300 MPH, buried as inaccurate.
- Matri, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Agreed. How is it so few people know of Super Pursuit Mode??
- swordedge, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1no one watched the last season?
- wibble, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0According to WIkipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KITT "Super-Pursuit Mode provided a 40% boost in speed beyond the car's original top speed of 300 MPH."..
I thought I'd seen KITT over 300mph before super pursuit mode (in the Goliath episodes - could be wrong though..)

- Matri, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1He's stuck on the ground.
- mactarkus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Aren't a more than a few of those cars real? I didn't realize an Aston Martin was a fictional car.
- paintpro, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Exactly! Just because James Bond broke the DBS in a movie doesn't mean I can't go buy one!
Well, I can't go buy one, but that's because of my financial situation and not because the car is fictional.

- Wakkyweed, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0I think that Forbes needs to make a list of the Top Ten Crappy Top Ten Lists. This one would be on it.
- wzpgsr, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2My fictional car only goes to 11.
- lunari, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1I seem to remember (numerous times) seeing KITT going 300+ mph.
- shadowspawn, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1BOOO!
http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/thewraith/Turbo.html wins them hands down. - franklymister, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1It would have been a lot more interesting to see how they worked out the exact top speed of those fictional vehicles. Nonetheless, nearly every one of them would completely lose control if they reached the claimed speeds. 190mph in a Beetle? 203 in an '82 Firebird? 200, even 220 mph in a Dodge Charger?
Here's the real life story of what it took to get an actual Dodge Charger up to 200mph: http://www.allpar.com/racing/200-mph-Daytona.html - wrestlingnrj, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Innacurrate, the Charger from Fast and the Furious was over 800hp, not 425hp.
- shutaro, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1They left off the The Deliverator's car... All of those fictional vehicles are from TV and Movies only.
- bowserkid, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Why has nobody made the Drag-u-la into a real working car yet? Steampunk freaks, I'm looking at you.
- MrFurious2k, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Slow news day at Forbes?
- Byramerica, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0I like the picture of Herbie...great old movies, I used to watch them over and over as a child in the 80's
- Dush, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0OMG TF FTW
- jaxcs, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2This could have been a fun read but instead it's a snooze. over half the cars seem to top out a little over 200 mph. Worse, they're not the most interesting cars in fiction. Stranger still is that not all of the cars are fictional. I mean james bond is a fictional character, but his car is real. So you have the transformer autobot going head to head with an aston martin which isn't even modded for speed (weapons modded, sure). You have the dragula from the Munsters going against the general lee. Come on, you can do better than this! dumb dumb article.
- asskicker32, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1I refuse to read this. I wont wait through a crappy slideshow of a crappy top ten list. I think Forbes has replaced NYT as my least favorite "news" site on teh web (guardian.co.uk is currently #1 crappiest worldwide).
- ebmnoize, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4The whole text, no slideshow nonsense, text version below:
In Pictures: The Fastest Fictional Cars
In order to determine the fastest fictional cars, we required that candidate vehicles belong to a popularly known fictional work, and must be known, within their fictional universe and by their audience, for being fast. Flying cars were deemed ineligible. Vehicle details and top speeds were based on an analysis of the fictional source material; where that material was inconclusive, estimates were made based on comparable real world cars
1. Blurr
Autobot
Featured In: The Transformers (1986)
Top Speed: 800 mph
Powered by: Energon
--A robot refugee from the planet Cybertron, Blurr can transform into a car in order to perform his duties as a messenger.
--In his vehicle form, Blurr is the fastest of the land-based Autobots, and can travel faster than the speed of sound, leaving a blurred image in his trail.
2. Mach Five
Custom race car
Featured In: Speed Racer (1967 and 2008)
Top Speed: 258 mph
Options include: Auto jacks, tire shields, homing robot, twin rotary cutting blades.
--Unlike most race cars, the Mach Five boasts ample trunk space, providing a perfect hiding place for Speed Racer's little brother and pet monkey.
--In 1999, a prototype Mach 5, built for charity, was constructed on a Corvette roadster chassis, and featured a 5.7-liter, 385-hp V8.
3. The Batmobile
Wayne Industries Tumbler
Featured In: Batman Begins (2005)
Top Speed: 220 mph
Options include: Armor plating, jet engine and front-mounted dual .50-caliber machine guns.
--The latest incarnation of the Caped Crusader's ride is a repurposed Wayne Industries "Tumbler," a military vehicle.
--Can leap buildings and go from 0 to 60 in five seconds.
4. Dom's Charger
1970 Dodge Charger
Featured In: The Fast And The Furious (2001)
Top speed: 220 mph (with nitrous-injection)
Powered By: 426 V8 Hemi 425-horsepower (modified)
--Vin Diesel's character, Dominic Toretto, races two cars in the movie. The other is a 1993 Mazda RX7.
--Many critics noted the plot similarities between The Fast and The Furious and Point Break, a 1991 Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze film.
5. K.I.T.T.
1982 Knight Industries Two Thousand
Featured In: Knight Rider (1982)
Top Speed: 203 mph
Powered By: Knight Industries Turbojet engine
Options: Turbo-boost, Sentience, Surveillance mode, Armor-coating
--K.I.T.T. had a prototype named K.A.R.R. (Knight Automated Roving Robot). K.A.R.R. was deactivated after a programming error made the machine dangerous. A re-activated K.A.R.R. evolves into K.I.T.T.'s mortal enemy.
--K.I.T.T. and his driver, Michael Knight (played by David Hasselhoff), work for an ominous-sounding crime-fighting organization called the Foundation for Law and Government.
6. Lightning McQueen
Sentient, animated race car
Featured In: Cars (2006)
Top Speed: 200 mph
Powered by: 750-horsepower V8 engine, capable of 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds
--Piston Cup Rookie of the Year
--Sponsored by Rust-eze Medicated Bumper Ointment
7. The General Lee
1969 Dodge Charger
Featured In: The Dukes of Hazzard (1979)
Top Speed: 200 mph
Powered by: 375-horsepower, 440-cubic-inch, Magnum V8 engine with racing carburetor
--Potentially politically incorrect features include painted Confederate flag on the roof, horn which plays part of the song "Dixie."
--The General Lee's doors were welded shut, like a race car, so driver and passenger had to slide in through the window.
--There were actually over 300 "General Lee's" used during the program's seven seasons, since the cars were so frequently damaged or destroyed in filming.
8. James Bond's Aston Martin
2006 Aston Martin DBS V12
Featured In: Casino Royale (2006)
Top Speed: 191 mph
Powered by: 500 horsepower 6.0 liter V12
--During the filming of Casino Royale, the DBS was not yet available. The cars seen in the movie are other Aston Martin models "dressed up" to look like a DBS.
--The most famous (and first) "Bond car" is the Aston Martin DB5, which was featured in a number of movies, including Goldfinger. Its top speed is 143 mph.
9. Herbie
1963 Volkswagen Beetle
Featured In: The Love Bug (1968)
Top Speed: 190 mph
Powered by: Porsche 356 engine (modified)
Options: Hood-mounted spotlight, Sunroof, Self-driving, Sentience
--Including 2005's Herbie: Fully Loaded, there have been five films featuring the sentient VW Bug. The original, 1969's The Love Bug, was that year's top-grossing film.
--Different accounts attribute Herbie's race track success to different motors: the Porsche 356 engine, a high-performance 1835cc Volkswagen Engine and even a Volkswagen bus engine.
10. Drag-u-la
Custom drag racer
Featured In: The Munsters (1964)
Top Speed: 160 mph
Powered by: 350HP 289CI Ford Mustang V-8 engine
--Home-made hot rod was built by Grandpa Munster so that he could win back the family car in a drag race.
--Features include custom coffin body, gold leaf paint, antique lamp headlights, organ pipe exhaust headers.
--The original Drag-u-la is currently on display at Planet Hollywood in Atlantic City, N.J. - ThePenrod, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Dugg down, for lack of Ecto-1.
- pr5owner, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0retards forgot the SPV (Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle) at 200MPH, this is a fully armored vehicle, pretty much a tank
also the FAB1 from thunderbirds (penelope's car) can do 200MPH because it has a jetengine inside - Puplu, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0These are great ways to nurture your creativity. You might find a similarity with designing Pinewood Derby Cars.
