- pookydirt, on 05/17/2009, -1/+51Cool technology, but very scary sounding in its implications...
- Gondring, on 05/17/2009, -0/+49Just wait until this "similar to Wi-Fi" technology gets hacked....people cruising along and then slammed into the windshield from a malicious signal.
- BlindingDawn, on 05/17/2009, -1/+43FTA: The device will alert drivers if, for example, a car jumps a red light, or advise them when it is unsafe to overtake. If it detects the potential for a collision, the system can give an audible warning or take over the reins if the driver’s reactions prove too slow.
Giving computers control of my car is something I'm not looking forward to. - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -2/+30I've always wondered why they don't just create a whole infrastructure of magnetic rails that are underneath the streets that would control all the cars. They could use magnetic polarity to create cars that hover over the pavement so there's no wear and tear of the cars or street. And then all this speed regulation could be enforce and practically eliminate all accidents - and eliminate the need for foreign oil.
I know what I'm thinking about is pure science fiction but it's not out of the realm of possibility. - twiztidsinz, on 05/18/2009, -1/+25No.. the sudden stop does.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -2/+26so if you have this will insurance companies reduce their premiums.. I guessing NO!
- shujin, on 05/18/2009, -1/+20You can disagree, but I don't think speeding is the main cause of accidents. I think accidents are largely caused by dumb maneuvers (not stopping for red lights or stop signs, trying to switch lanes without enough space) and simply not paying enough attention (trying to pick up fallen cell phone, putting on make up, texting) are the main causes of accidents.
Technology is cool, though. - WhiskeyWrites, on 05/18/2009, -0/+16If the speed governors become standard, I see an even bigger industry being formed to circumvent the things.
- festizian, on 05/18/2009, -0/+16But...I like speeding.
- liarandathief, on 05/18/2009, -0/+15"even lowering a “curtain or shield” over the windscreen, preventing the panicking driver from seeing what is happening and making rash decisions; instead the car’s chip would take over."
Cause nothing calms me down like suddenly not being able to see when I'm going 70. - pookydirt, on 05/18/2009, -0/+14It's not all about government... even if that is part.
It has the potential of being a pandora's box. Hackers, terrorists, stupid pranking teenagers, other stalkers in your life. Auto-pilot takeover malfunction... there are many, many reasons to think that this isn't what I want in my vehicle right now. - Janinco, on 05/17/2009, -0/+14I thought the same thing when I read it pooky. It seems cool when you first read about it, then it sounds kind of creepy.
- diskoh, on 05/18/2009, -0/+14If you can stop crashes why would you need to stop speeding?
- vtbarrera, on 05/17/2009, -0/+13It'd kind of make it just like that one ride at Disneyland. But it would take all the fun out of real driving.
- yerdaddy, on 05/18/2009, -3/+13Look, dumbasses. Trains already exist. And they crash anyway.
- pookydirt, on 05/17/2009, -1/+10I regularly use a two-lane road where the speed limit is 50mph for the majority of about a 15 mile section with only one section anymore that allows passing. It's probably only about 200yds long. Very regularly, I end up stuck behind people who travel at about 40mph average, getting even slower on the curves. Because that's a more wide-open section, all these pokeys seem to get close to 50mph just for that stretch. If I can't go above 55, I can't pass 'em in the allotted space.
- inyearstocome, on 05/18/2009, -0/+9speeding alone, no-- its the speed differential that is most dangerous. Highways with people driving 55 and 100 are awful. The minimum speed should be at least 70 in all but the right lane.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -1/+8yeah until you need to speed to the hospital so you don't die or some other life threatening situation.. What they should really do is govern the speed of all delivery trucks, lorries, minibuses.. coach etc.. anything big vehicle.
- pookydirt, on 05/17/2009, -0/+7They'd have to have a constant energy source to maintain their magnetism, wouldn't they?
That would be one heck of an infrastructure overhaul... We have a heck of alotta roads in the US. - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+6I can't drive 55
- rarson, on 05/18/2009, -0/+6Thank goodness for used cars.
- tgc1, on 05/18/2009, -1/+7***** this police state *****. I'll stick to older vehicles if this becomes the norm. They can take their technology and shove it. LEARN HOW TO ***** DRIVE and accidents will not happen. The problem is not speeders, it is lack of education. Have you ever seen how easy it is to get a license in the countries that claim speeding is the major cause of accidents? It's ***** braindead simple. Oh, you can do a 3 point turn? Oh you can back into a parking space? Oh, you know how to change lanes... here's your license.
No, don't educate people about vehicle dynamics. How to drive in various weather conditions. Threshold breaking. Avoiding panic. Etc... no school or licensing center emphasizes any of that. THAT'S the problem. Putting this ***** on cars is just going to create a new market for people who don't want to be driven and again, opt for older cars with very little technological interference.
Maybe some people hate driving. That's fine. Then don't drive. There are a lot of people, including myself, who are completely in love with driving. It is an amazing feeling when you get it right. When you know how to drive. When you can feel the car and its movements and manipulate them as your own. Most people are too caught up in the *****. The automatic gadgets. The cruise control. The ABS. The *****. Those things just make people more unaware. Make them more dependent and foolish. Draws them into a false sense of security. And then they think they can ***** around with things in the car because hey, the car will sort it all out.
This is all a money making scheme to both drive up the cost of vehicles (the safety equipment on the average car already drives up the cost by several thousand dollars). And to answer to the Insurance industry (***** scammers they are). - bakersfield90, on 05/18/2009, -1/+6WE MUST STOP THE ROBOTS NOW!
BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! - LeekMibles, on 05/18/2009, -0/+5lol
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -1/+6The Microsoft jokes practically write themselves, here.
- TakeMyCrabs, on 05/18/2009, -1/+5frequency jamming + less attentive drivers = no thanks.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/18/2009, -1/+5His annoying what?
- PakoBedejo, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4Yes, we obviously shouldn't go over 10Mph...
Just create REAL driving tests & keep the ***** off the roads. Anytime you see an SUV upside down, that was a *****. - punkcat, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4like the subway? how futuristic.
- 1longtime, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4"... and even [autonomously] lowering a “curtain or shield” over the windscreen, preventing the panicking driver from seeing what is happening and making rash decisions; instead the car’s chip would take over."
Someone finally implementing the Peril Sensitive Sunglasses idea. - tgc1, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4Wait until they pass a law mandating cars must be recycled after 5 years or some such *****. Just you wait. It's either that or they just create unreal emissions laws that immediately make it impossible to renew your registration again, but only the newest cars can pass them.
- WindReaver, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4Especially when you then slam into all of the other cars that don't have this system.
- ZippyV, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4How is open source going to prevent the broadcast of a malicious signal that I'm driving 0 MPH and results in all the cars behind me making emergency stops?
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4cool story, bro.
- NickLee808, on 05/18/2009, -1/+5Just one step closer to having robots do the driving for us.
Soon they'll be feeding us...
and clothing us...
and fighting for us...
and determining when we can leave our houses...
and harvesting us...
...I dub thee SkyNet. - ShaneMcDeath, on 05/18/2009, -2/+5I don't know. Can't help but think these posts are going to look kind of daft in 10-20 years when accidents are down about 80%
- thcobbs, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3surrrrre its not hackable... just like that cellphone in your hand has no bluetooth....
- TyrannousDotNet, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3take all the fun out of it why dont ya.
- MaynardJK, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Powered by pixie dust and unicorn farts.
- smemily, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Speeding itself doesn't cause the accidents, true, but it sure does make them more fatal.
- McDutchie, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4Actually, they hardly ever do.
- DarkLance, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3if we make it open source, holes like this could be fixed and eliminated. Always wondered why we didn't do this for voting machines...
oh yeah, lobbyists - w1cked1, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4I basically agree. I dislike even current cars with ABS, and "traction control" as the worst.
You need to have the feel of the road through your vehicle in order to have real traction control. Alienate the driver from the feel of the road with what the car is doing on it is a recipie for disaster. It'll only encourage people to go too fast for road conditions... snow, black ice... etc. And once the control systems bails out, the ignorant driver will not stand a chance in hell of recovering.
Is it little wonder this is all ***** they sell to the SUV loving soccer moms. Hell, even that "worst drivers" show teaches people to stomp on the breaks and skid as the fastest way of stopping..... - Orochiyagami, on 05/18/2009, -0/+355MPH WTF? I live in an area where the lowest posted speed for 25 miles is 70MPH the majority is 75MPH... or none posted, where the hell do you live? even most major cities freeway speeds are between 60-70MPH depending on crowding... no thank you.... none of my cars have governors and I will never buy a car with one in it, what about those random times when you want to go to the speedway? I'll pass you can have that junk in you car if you want....
- EMTtech, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2whatever it is, and wherever it is attached, I will disable it, hack it, modify it, or remove it..
focus on impared drivers < 3% of all car related deaths are due to speed. - pookydirt, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2The plan in the article was not was this comment was referencing... it's in reference to the idea of a governor as the only device.
- w1cked1, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Excellent, take away more responsibility. Now if I should run over a little kid that unwisely crossed the street against the light, they'll blame the chip and not me.
Soon, we won't have to think or be responsible for anything anymore..... yaaayy. Maybe police tazers can be as automated. - mlbdenver, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2I don't get the connection with speeding. If collisions will be reduced or eliminated, then I say INCREASE the speeds. I'm so tired of the anti-speeding rhetoric. I'm tired of cops wasting time with speeders when there are real criminals who need attention.
- gdonald, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Just like in video games.
