- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -1/+29Use a damn speedometer. I don't think any dumbass ever went 95 in a 50 zone because they didn't realize it.

Instant speeding tickets
No thanks - Corbinwaltz, on 04/02/2009, -0/+20$250 plus $15 bucks a month to tell me Im going too fast?!? I'd rather save money and just gamble with the law.
- Biddypapa, on 04/03/2009, -0/+14Sweet, another device that can groom society for a Big Brother civilization.
- PotentPotables, on 04/02/2009, -0/+12When will people realize that it's the slow, over-cautious drivers that cause all the problems on the road?
- Amlethus, on 04/02/2009, -2/+12I love it when technology helps obsessive parents control their children. Thank you, technology!
- pjpete, on 04/02/2009, -2/+12But will it blend?
- BlackAsBovril, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10"Massachusetts resident Jonathan Fischer, 20, said while his invention could be used by parents to monitor their teenage children's driving habits, his main focus in creating Speed Demon was basic driver safety, The Boston Globe said Thursday."
"As a teenager, I feel that teens deserve their privacy," he said. "My device only alerts when you're driving dangerously. Drive safe, and you get to keep your privacy."
I believe his company will be selling this information to law enforcement and whoever else wants to buy it, government, insurance companies etc. It can also be used to monitor peoples movements without them knowing, not exactly desirable. Also this invention isn't anything new, there are companies in the UK and Europe who want to make these devices compulsory at car manufacture so that government can tax people for each mile they drive as well. Plus the government are interested here in the UK because they are obsessed with monitoring people and their movements - be warned! - Drag0nmyballs, on 04/02/2009, -0/+7I am glad this wasn't around when I was a kid. My parents would have killed me if I had one of those things.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6For a small monthly fee, you can have an alarm go off if your monitor registers movement of your car going straight down (the "Thelma and Louise" package) or straight up (the "Close Encounters" package).
- WarriorBlake, on 04/02/2009, -1/+7"intended to promote safe driving." = intended to give the government more money via tickets
- jdoggg1, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6Great, just what we need... another device to monitor our location and illegal shenanigans. Breaking rules is a right of passage as we grow up. Let the cops handle this sort of thing, we don't need big brother monitoring every damn turn you make.
I have noticed that kids that we're overly monitored in high school went f-ing nuts when they got to college because they had never really experienced freedom before. - marx2k, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5How about just not getting them a car
- Gareth321, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4I have a locking chastity belt I might be able to interest you in...
- zbeast, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4When I first saw the name speed demon I though it was a radar detector.
I need an aircraft detector or a patrol car detector. I don't need a speed logging device. - PotentPotables, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Yea, but what about when you're on a main road with a speed limit of 45-50, and idiots are going 40. That's more dangerous than someone speeding, but they'll never get ticketed for it. When I'm driving back from my morning classes, I routinely get stuck behind soccer moms who are coasting at a cool 5-10 under the speed limit because they're yapping on their cell phones and are too distracted to drive. It's apparently ok for them to do that, but when I pass them on the shoulder, I'm driving recklessly. I don't get it.
- berserc, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Coming soon to a Insurance Agent near you. You want the preferred rate on your insurance, you will need to install one of these. You want government healthcare, you will need to install one of these. $$$ in return for your privacy. Its already starting people.
- Y0tsuya, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3The job of parents is to control their children, not simply to pop them out and let their spawns run wild.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3I have a friend who has an opinion about child rearing when we rib him about all the crap he pulled when he was a preteen (theft, vandalism, etc.) and what his own kids will most likely do. He says if they're smart enough to not get caught by whatever tech/tricks he or the authorities use to keep them in line, he'll at least be proud of them for covering their tracks.
- Y0tsuya, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Those bankers sure learned to have integrity once we got them pesky regulators off their backs!
- chadsmith729, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3I'm just happy in PA at least they haven't started to do time tracking on toll roads. If you make it to point x in less than y amount of time you were speeding. Here's your ticket.
- yerdaddy, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3In mixed traffic that's a problem. Back in my 50 year old residential development there are a lot of dumb children playing around the street. Two months ago I came crawling down the hill at 15 miles an hour because I just Knew this one crazy kid throwing snowballs at the school bus was going to run right out in front of me. He did. By the time he saw me and yelped I was at a dead stop 30 feet away shaking my head at him. I have a bad driving record with lots of speed violations in the past, but I just don't understand the people that come plowing through the back roads at 45-50, blasting all the stop signs. A little discretion goes a long way.
- upick, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2We can pretty much blend anything these days
- chaos7, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2that is soooo gonna happen. the government will sign into law that cars must have a gps device. then they'll fine people they catch speeding with satellites.
big brother is happening so fast. - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2This isn't parenting. How will kids learn how to have integrity (to do the right thing when nobody's watching) when they're always being watched?
- replaysMike, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2I bet you can paint flames on it.
- bartofdahammer, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1WTF. And if they had that on the 407, the only toll road in Ontario, every person using it would get a speeding ticket every time they drive it. It's 100km/h (62mph) zone, but everyone does atleast 130km/h (80mph), and good thing the cops don't pull people over in Ontario, unless you drive retarded fast.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1He won't be selling anything to law enforcement, at least not in the US. Just like with red-light cameras, these "automated tattle-tale" systems are a violation of a citizen's 6th amendment right to question their accuser. Since that doesn't exist as a person (and there's no end of reasonable doubt to be cast upon these systems), criminal prosecution based upon these things as evidence is strictly verboten for every district attorney's office in the 'States.
- marx2k, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Break as many laws as you want, but keep my safety intact.
- colonelcupcake, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Rite* of passage
- reverant, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Since when does fast = unsafe or reckless?
It is the old lady in the left lane going 10 under that causes accidents! It is all about speed of traffic around you.
And basically anyone who doesn't go 10 over shouldn't be on the road. - Gareth321, on 04/03/2009, -1/+2Well, this is the thing, why aren't there government mandated speed restricters on ALL cars manufactured or imported into countries with speeding restrictions? It would be cheap, relatively simple, and virtually eliminate speeding overnight. Tickets aren't about driver safety, they're about revenue generation. If this product takes off, you can be damn sure they'll try exactly what you're talking about.
- Amlethus, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1True, and there is a huge difference between proper parenting and obsessively controlling your children.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Fortunately this is only for obsessive-compulsive parents, but I have no doubt the government will try to have one of these in every car before too long.
- Amlethus, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Haha I like you. I'm going to add you as a friend, comfort, because I like having friends that don't understand me =D
Nigh7: I completely agree with you. Integrity is important. A person should not do the right thing because he is being watched or because he fears punishment; he should do the right thing because he wants to do so. - Daverian, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Basic two-lane (one lane going each direction) highway speed limits should go back to 65 like they were 30 or so years ago. They made the excuse that we had a gas shortage, said they would lower the speed limits until the gas shortage was over, and they have been 55mph ever since. This is because they saw the increased revenue in the tickets department....ah, everything is about making money. I love capitalism. Please, take into account that cars nowadays are much more safer too...and seat belt laws are in many states. Why didn't we go back to the way things were?
Then, change interstates. I drive a 350 mile trip twice a month (350 miles there, 350 miles back) on a major interstate that has a 65mph speed limit, that is always LINED with cops (one statie every 10 minutes or so). Ridiculous. If I could go 75, I would save nearly an hour each way! 4 lane interstates (two lanes going each direction) should be 70 AT LEAST, 8 lane (4 lanes going each direction) should be 80, hoping that driving classes teach people that the fastest drivers stay in the far left lane.
Now, I see what many people say, "it's 55, so people drive 70....if you make speed limits 80, people will drive 95." No...the reason people drive 70mph in a 55 is because 55 is too damn slow. Change the limits to what I say, and if anyone drives over 5mph over the limit (85 in an 80), give them a ticket. 5mph is enough room for shifting from going straight to going downhill or for speedometers being off a tad. - s33dz, on 06/16/2009, -0/+0Drive safely!
- spyd3rweb, on 04/03/2009, -3/+3Maybe the speed limit should be higher if people are able to drive 95 on a certain road or highway. They manage to drive 150+ on highways in Germany which aren't too dissimilar from interstates in the US.
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -9/+2I bet you are hte first person to scream "Why can't PARENTS actually do the parenting" yet when something like this comes out that helps them do that, you bitch about that.
Either way. you just want to be a bitch.
IT is not obsessive to want your kids to drive safely and not put themselves in real danger. And it is OT possible to know what your kids are doing at all times. (If anyone would ever have sex with you and you had kids, they WILL do lots and lots of things that you do not approve.) - chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -8/+1I'd pay $250 plus $15 bucks a month to keep my kids from speeding.
