- coondoggie, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3The last Solar Challenge was indeed last year in Australia see here: http://worldsolarchallenge.blogspot.com/2007_10_01 ... there will be another there next year: http://www.wsc.org.au/welcome.html. The North American version runs every other year as stated in the article. Michigan is in first place currenty: http://www.americansolarchallenge.org/. There are currently 15 of the original 24 teams left in the competition of which Ohio State and MIT were part: http://americansolarchallenge.org/event/asc2008/te ...
- las3rjock, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1The North American Solar Challenge and the World Solar Challenge are independent events with different organizers and sponsors. The only commonality tends to be the regulations on the cars, but that's only so that teams don't have to significantly modify their existing car (or build a new car) in order to enter both events. As I mentioned in my other comment, MIT and Ohio State are among the schools that withdrew their entries from this year's NASC. I've heard anecdotally that the reason MIT withdrew is because they were unable to obtain suitable tires for their car, and generally the reason why entries are withdrawn is because the car is not ready to be raced.
- las3rjock, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2There are a number of factual errors in this article. Michigan is the defending North American Solar Challenge champion, but the last time the NASC was held was in 2005 (not last year), and it was held in North America (not Australia). The article also names a number of colleges that ended up withdrawing from the NASC, such as MIT and Ohio State.
