- Error601, on 12/12/2007, -1/+21And it will only require violating the laws of physics to be practical. No problem.
- killkev, on 12/12/2007, -1/+14Can you imagine a bicyclist totaling your car? While im all for the environment, I want to be safe while doing so.
- allaboutdatiki, on 12/12/2007, -1/+12One word my boy ... plastic.
- codyman, on 12/12/2007, -0/+11I mean, I am not against all these clean cars and whatnot, but for the love of manbearpig, please just make them look like a car and not a toy...
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+9I envision a day far into the future where people stop trotting out ecologically friendly "concept" cars and start producing actual ones.
- carrera594, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8Whats with future cars looking like *****? Ok, ok not all future concept cars do, but there are a lot that look mad *****.
- DaviDaviDaviD, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7I'm not sure I like the idea of a car that's built like a toy in a kinder egg.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -2/+7Are we making a point to develop ridiculous-looking vehicles?
- macwally, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6"Oh yeah, and solar powered cars are a physical impossibility."
I disagree. I've driven one. Not only that, I've driven one across North America from Austin, Texas to Calgary, Alberta. See http://www.americansolarchallenge.org/ . While these concept vehicles may not seem very practical, they are still solar powered cars. You should check your facts before littering the Digg message boards with your ignorance. - Jacksc, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Thats ded ded horrible. Is it made from recycled goods? Such as tins of beans and stuff?
- buddahead9, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4So what would be the top speed? 25 mph?
- schnikies79, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2I don't want to have ten different vehicles for my different commutes. I have a car and a truck, I use both and I pay insurance on both. I don't want to pay more so I can have a car with no trunk. I do much more than just commute. Each extra vehicle you have cost money.
- timjkidd, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Damn, that thing is hideous
- phixed, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2There better be neon rims standard in that model.
- dizilbdog, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Do you really think America is going to get off of Oil Ever to do this or something like this. I think not
- LoudNoise, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Why does everything that's environmentally friendly have to look like a 3 year old drew it with crayons?
Hey, guys who are trying to push this kind of stuff: Make it look like a normal car, and it might sell. - SailRacer, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Neat idea, but buried for having nothing but CG pictures.
- KenRay, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Huzzah! I can now get a car that is Web 2.0 compatible.
- Ninnux, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1foxhaze :: Take any of todays models, get rid of the engine compartment and replace with small powerful motors for each wheel. Then get rid of the trunk (don't need it for most daily commutes). Now do away with substructure and replace with more areas to peer through (assuming much stronger composite materials exist with the same tensile and compression strengths). Composite materials likewise allow you to get rid of most rigid body designs, so you can lower the car closer to the ground and make more compact. You end up with vehicles that look very much like the one in the article. Likewise, would Henry Ford think the new Mustang is ridiculous?
- amoona, on 10/19/2008, -0/+1That's suck!
http://www.smilenut.cn/waterforgas.html - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -3/+4 One day, all the cars will look like something out of The Jetsons!
- noahhoward, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Comes with your own African to weave seat covers...
Why the hell do they include images with text if they have no intention of giving us a large version of the image. - BigDunka, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of the light cycles from Tron. Watch out for beams of light!
- trollick, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Because, as most concepts for last 50 years were telling us, in future all cars will looks like eggs.
- JimXugle, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1It's carbon Neutral! Thats Great!
Too bad anyone driving this thing will be killed if they're in an accident with anything bigger than a sedan. - Basiledes, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2How the hell you gonna pick up chicks in that thing
- GeneralFault, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1"a"... "z" who taught you to speak like that? The extra Z was extra work. Why? Ahh the humanity! I just cant take it! (head explodes).
- tamckissick, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1The old Crosleys used to be pretty fast on the racetrack in the 50's and they had around 47 hp. That's around 31 kw. However, a typical car only uses about 10 hp to cruise steady after the short acceleration to get to speed. Not saying that the solar could supply all that, but it could certainly supply a bigger chunk than suggested above.
- apeweek, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Well let's be clear about what you mean. It all depends on the size of the solar panel, doesn't it? Don't forget that the panel doesn't have to physically live ON the car. It can be on the garage where the car is charged, for instance.
I drive an EV, and I have priced out a solar panel (for a couple thousand) that can provide enough energy to drive a few miles per day. If I have a short commute, it may well be possible for my car to subsist strictly on solar energy. At the least, it sure helps with my energy bill. All it takes to get all my driving energy from solar is to add a few more panels to my garage.
Here's a practical example:
http://www.solarvan.co.uk/
This solar van gets about 10% of its operating power from its roof-mounted solar panel. - yoda17, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Solar powered cars are a physical impossibility in the practical sense. I have designed and worked on them. http://www.solarcar.arizona.edu/team_history.html They are no more than a 1-person bicycle and require hours of battery charging (that's where the solar part comes in) before they will move. It's been a decade since I worked on this, but there have been no 2-orders of magnitude improvement to overcome the practicality limitations.
- toyotaboy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Meh, I'm so sick of these artists making sketches and making outrageous claims. I would love a solar powered car too, but solar technology is decades off in efficiency.
- Wasyu, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1At earths distance from the sun solar panels can only supply a maximum of 1KW per M^2 on earth's surface in theory and 500Watts in practice even a geo metro has about 56KW of mechanical power so do that math to be faster then a golf cart it would have to violate the laws of physics.
Besides even if it did work I wouldn't drive something that ugly. - Devrdander, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1RTFA, it uses solar energy to recharge, its not its only source of power.
- Wasyu, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1The Tesla is an example of how to do a green car right this on the other hand is just pure failure.
- i208khonsu, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1But with the tinted glass how will you know when the light is green?
- pickypg, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait until this is in a car accident. This car would crinkle up and everyone inside would die, which considering how environmentalists hate humans for their own carbon footprint, might be a good thing, I guess.
You know, you guys could just stop eating too--we'd all appreciate what you did for the Earth and maybe not drive for like an hour or something in honor. - skiddles, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Lets see what happens when there is an unfortunate impact with the front end of a Mack Truck. You know the old saying. Whats the last thing that goes through a bug's mind when it hits the windshield?
- krypt1k, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Wait a sec, if you slap a recycling symbol on the poster, paint the car green and stick some tree branch shaped vinyls on it, its eco friendly? That doesn't work with horsepower and Type-R stickers, why should it work with the environment?
And why does everything that is 'eco-friendly' have to look like a turd? Can't they just take a regular car and replace all the stuff on it with eco friendly stuff to a point where I don't even know its there? - blipblopblip, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1I haven't looked at it yet but I guarantee it's ugly. All "green" cars are ugly concepts so that people don't want to buy them.
- RabidFurby, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1All these carbon-neutral hybrid cars look like complete an utter ass. Make a normal car, puffers.
- pathat, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1It looks both aesthetically and structurally like a mobile greenhouse... 'hazardous driving conditions' mean winds above 10mph.
- pajamamoose, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1So pretty much their eco-answer to car pollution is to create a big-kid version of those little fisher-price cars with the yellow roof? You know, with the Fred Flinstone method of propulsion?
- hiro, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1I can't think of many car designs that could be less "sleek" than that thing!
- mbalionel, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Nice pimpsmack. Kapow!!!
- Wasyu, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Ok not only is it butt ugly it also would not be legal to drive on US roads with the green tinted glass and lack of bumpers.
What is it with such god awful concept cars being pitched these days? - EvilGnomeAndy, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1What about the Dandy Lion SX?
- CplMax, on 12/13/2007, -0/+0That car just looks horrible, if i bought it i'd ask the african guy to weave me a giant wood dildo to stick up my ass while i drove it, so that i wouldn't want to spend anytime driving, so oh course there would be no co2 emission at all.
- camaroz06, on 12/12/2007, -0/+0That car is pretty sweet I saw it on Modern Marvels.
